Morning Coffee Starts Moving On To TCU

A glance at the latest depth chart reveals that it has been updated for TCU.

Of course, by updated, I mean that the heading now says "Depth Chart for TCU" instead of Arkansas State. There's no change whatsoever.

Before we all go bonkers, though, I note two things.

First, that Brian Orakpo - out this coming Saturday to injury - is still listed as the starting Quick End.  Second, Texas didn't open last game with a fullback, despite what the depth chart suggested.

We're at a point right now where I don't think there's much, if anything, to be gained from trying to read into what information is available publicly. Toss it all out the window. Whatever changes Texas does have planned for this week are staying in Bellmont until game day. Take it to the bank.

TCU defensive end Tommy Blake is practicing with the team and expected to play Saturday. Blake's on-the-field, off-the-field saga has been a strange one, but it's not surprising to see him pulling things together in time for Texas week. I'd more or less count on him playing.

Meanwhile, the Statesman sent a reporter to Fort Worth to gather "bulletin board material" from the Horned Frogs, which they happily provided.

Says TCU safety David Roach: "We expect to win. If you go out there thinking about a loss, you’ve already lost. We go into every game expecting to win, and if we lose, then it’s a surprise. I don’t feel like we’re the underdogs. We’re both good teams. We’re both ranked teams. I would say it’s a pretty important game for both teams."

Says TCU defensive end Chase Ortiz: "We respect Texas and what they’ve accomplished. But we’re not in awe of Texas."

Says TCU coach Gary Patterson: "We understand Texas is a big game because it is the next game."

Honestly? I think Patterson and TCU are smart to be barking it up. All the crap people talk about "bulletin board material" is just that - crap.

I'll never forget a few days before the Rose Bowl when VY said something provocative and my father gasped about how Texas needed to shut the hell up and focus on the game. I disagreed with him then, as I do now with folks who may want to criticize TCU for coming in to Austin talking boldly about winning the game.

Rare is the game when a good team "creeps up" on another, supposedly better, one. This is football, people. The two teams take the field, they line up, as fired up as they possibly can be, and they try to kill one another. It's a battle for physical dominance.

And though I certainly recognize how important the mental side of football is, I understand, too, that a big part of that mental component is confidence and a sheer will to win. Gary Patterson gets a lot of mileage out of his players believing that they belong on the same field as Texas. And if we're being honest? He probably shouldn't be worried aobut whether or not his players' confidence translates into revving up the opponent.

Because if it takes opposing player quotes to get you appropriately fired up for your next game... you've got biggger problems on your hands.

I've got a busy day of class today, but will be spending a chunk of time later this afternoon and evening getting us all set for TCU game week. If you missed the summer preview, you can get your first look at TCU here.

scanning down the...

the defensive lineup, I almost got excited. For a second I thought Brandon Foster was Left OUT instead of Left CB. Wishful thinking at it's worst.

I don't know about all of you, but I can never really gauge the Texas team until the success or failure of the Week 2 game. If they control the tempo of the game, it will normally be a good season. If they get dominated in Week 2 then they usually have a hard time getting their confidence back up in time for the RRR.

I'm extremely amped about this game for that reason mainly.

By the way, I'm really upset in the fact that I wasn't able to get Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, or Vince Young in my FFL draft on Monday. Shame on me.

"This is football, people."

Why when I see this do I instantly think of this:

Its Division 1 Football!

It's the Big 12!!

Go play intramurals, brotha.

as far as bulletin board material goes

I don't think that even qualifies.

It's not like they said texas is overrated and they expect to whip some ass and show the nation they belong in a BCS bowl (before losing once again to BYU).

All that pre-game motivational crap doesn't last past kickoff, anyways. Once you get your first hit of the game, it's on.

agreed

That's pretty weak if that's what passes for trash talk these days.

I also agree

the only team trash talk that's noteworthy is like the stuff you mentioned, Beergut.

Also, I like one-on-one trash talk, e.g. Chad Johnson v DeAngelo Hall.  That one is always settled by a serious showdown (even if they are friends in the end, they know how to get the other riled up).

"It's a battle for physical dominance."

I just wanted to add that unfortunately for Texas this game is not just a battle for physical dominance - high level football can be as cerebral as grand masters moving in endgame.  If it were all physical prowess we would win 95% of our games hands down.

(PB - i know your comment was directed at the bulletin board material, but I felt like i would take the chance to swipe at ol' GD.  I feel better now)

I'm hoping

that someone on the Texas D gets the TCU game started right with a monster hit...I can't remember the last big hit from Texas.

Big Hits

Texas hasn't had any big hits since the 2005 Rose Bowl.  Maybe I should rephrase that.  Texas hasn't had any "memorable" hits since the 2005 Rose Bowl.
I say that, because I can't remember any, maybe someone can refresh my memory.

One of my favorite scenes from the Rose Bowl is Patt Leinart walking off the field shaking his head after getting popped.

That's what I want to see Saturday night!  I want all the people on ESPN and online who have been talking about how disappointing Texas' performance against Arkansas State was (myself included), to next week be saying, "Holy crap, look out for Texas!"

Last week's performance could be the best thing that could have happened to us.  Hopefully we now have something to prove, that "WE ARE TEXAS!!! And we deserve to be at the top of the pack, and we are not going to let some WAC job team come in to our house and make us look stupid."  Show those frogs why they SHOULD be in awe of Texas, and send them running back to Fort Worh with their horny tail between their legs!!!

Where's my helmet!!!

Pops in OU game last year

UT had several head-clearing hits in the OU game last year, including one on an OU receiver (I believe it was Iglesias hit by Aaron Ross, but someone else may remember better) after he had caught a pass deep in Texas' territory. That one caused a fumble, recovered by Texas, when UT was up only 21-10. Another was by Erick Jackson on Reggie Smith (video on an earlier post on BON) during a punt return.

But you are right, the hitting, especially by the secondary, seemed to taper off later in the season.

Michael Griffen

and Tarrel Brown. TB hit him in the front while MG had him held from behind. Brutal hit.

Not shameless promoting of my highlight reel...I suggest turning down the music as it sucks. All I had when I made it though

Nebraska

I seem to remember a big and important hit in that game.

Aaron Ross

Forced a fumble after the receiver got the game winning first down.

Sounds like Blake's

dodge-drug-test-itis has finally passed and he's feeling fit enough to play. Good for him.

Funny how things cleared up in time for the Texas game. Nature works in strange ways.

I really hope Texas lays out the Horned Frogs, because the cliche "Horned by Frogs" or "Frog Horn Stampede" headlines will be unbearable.

Sergio?

Anyone know if Kindle will be on the field Saturday?  Wasn't he on some every-other-game suspension?

I think...

I think it is for 3 straight games--I am not aware of alternating games suspension.  I look forward to his return--both from the defensive and offensive side of the ball/standpoint (I hope he gets some of the carries inside the 5 yd line).
