When your team takes out a damn good Oklahoma squad as the Longhorns did last Saturday, it becomes time--as Mack Brown acknowledged--to refocus your goals with the Big Prize officially in play.
And when, as the nation's new #1 team, your guys then whip another solid team as badly as Texas thrashed Missouri this evening...
No.
If Texas has given its fans every reason to Believe, the inescapable reality of win #7 is that game #8 now looms larger than ever, yet another dark rain cloud hovering on the near horizon. Even in the immediate afterglow of victory, it's hard not to think about Oklahoma State, who in methodically destroying Baylor today very clearly confirmed their desire and ability to have a say in how this all turns out.
I don't bring this up because tonight's victory isn't worth celebrating; it most certainly is. It's more like tonight's victory very loudly confirmed that--holy crap--this is Real... something like, I imagine, that which a father feels when he holds his first born child for the first time.
Tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. the Texas Longhorns football team will debut #1 in the 2008 BCS Standings. And it shouldn't be particularly close.
So as you toast your last shot tonight, see if you don't smile and shudder a bit at the same time. Because now... 2008 can only bring glory you'll never forget, or pain that will stay with us for a long, long time to come. We're all fathers with this team now. We've held it and felt it and know what it could grow up to become...
Now go on, get your ass outta here and go celebrate tonight--you ain't hurt.
We'll talk tomorrow about how to knock the next motherf**ker out.

clra2 - October 18, 2008
As much as i hate to say it
I caught myself thinking of ’01 and Colorado….anyways bring on the Cowboys!!!!
blazzinken - October 18, 2008
I'm thinking of 05 and Colorado
Where we absolutely humiliated them
98horn - October 18, 2008
I fully expect
to beat OSU next week, just as I expected to beat Mizzou tonight (although I will say I didn’t expect this methodical beat-down). The game that worries me a little is going to lubbock in what will be (assuming we both win next week) the biggest game in the history of their program. That will be a hornets nest.
By the way, isn’t it amazing, after years of wondering where all those great defensive recruits were, watching them all miraculously appear over the course of a few weeks? I wonder what the difference is?
SaintBevo - October 18, 2008
Hook 'em!
I just love this year’s team. Almost (?) makes me forget 2005!?
Yes, we Will cream the cowboys next week.
I am really happy and going to get more drunker now.
YAY and WOOOOO!!!
bfaut86 - October 18, 2008
Defense was great
They showed Pinkel right before half time and you could tell he had no idea what just hit him!
How about Vondrell McGee, had a good run and then cleaned up very well! 6 for 60
Also good to see Fozzy! And the young receivers getting in on some plays. Malcom williams catch was great!
blazzinken - October 18, 2008
I just hope we
don’t spot OSU 3 or 4 touchdowns again this time.
tdwalsh - October 18, 2008
Not gonna happen. nt
bfaut86 - October 18, 2008
You said it right.
Holly Anderson - October 18, 2008
Mack
needs to bury the game ball, and everything else he can think of
jacobb23 - October 18, 2008
Bury
the game ball, then bury the (TBoone) Cowboys.
tdwalsh - October 18, 2008
FYI; Mack's about to be on SportsCenter
the1austin - October 18, 2008
Agree, PB
It’s time everyone is on board for a serious run. I’m putting everything I have into this year’s team; forget next year. This will be beautiful euphoria or disgusting heartbreak.
BigTexBD - October 18, 2008
I knew we would win but...
I had no I dea that we would dominate them to this degree. That’s scary for everyone else who has to play us. Let’s go beat Okie Lite and Tech, Baylor and Kanas. Then for the cherry on top I wanna hang 70 on A&M for the last two years.
McCoy is destiny’s child right now. I always knew the kid had it in him. I think bringing on Major and Muschamp looks liek an absolute masterstroke by Mack. An GD is getting rejuvenated by his old protoge’. Muschamp is absolutely awesome and I saw him and the Major bumping fists… hope he doesn’t hurt Major’s hand when he does that.
HornsFan87 - October 18, 2008
Does anyone know what Pickens Plan actually is?
the1austin - October 18, 2008
Someone said it best over in the 2d half board
“Two in the Pinkel, one in the Stinkel”
98horn - October 18, 2008
screw med school im going to be in austin next wknd wooohoo!!
hookemkp - October 18, 2008
WOOO!
I’m not thinking about next week, just trying to enjoy the season so far. It’s already been a better season than I expected.
hornbone - October 18, 2008
Does GameDay
come back for a third game? Next week’s game is probably bigger than this one!!!
abtxutfan - October 18, 2008
See OSU and PSU
run Bevo run - October 18, 2008
Guy who works for Gameday said OSU v PSU was a done deal
unless both teams lost this weekend – which they did not. If they had both lost – he said Gameday would come back to Austin.
blazerhorn - October 19, 2008
enjoy this year....
enjoy tonight, enjoy next weekend and realize, we should be much better next year.
DrunkArmadillo - October 18, 2008
Exactly
Offensive line is young and talented. Secondary is young and talented. We have young and talented WRs. We have young and talented RBs. We have one more year of Colt McCoy. Then it’s Garrett Gilbert.
This is way premature, but I see a little Texas Football DYNASTY at hand.
goingforthecorner - October 18, 2008
Points to ponder
1. I really believe the first half noise level made a difference. A usual accurate chase daniel was misfiring alot. In the second half, after we were up 35-3 at the half, people thought that we were gonna win for sure so it was as loud.
2. No answer for Maclin or Coffman? Maclin returned the ball nicely
3. Punts/kickoffs were kicked directly to Quan, not Shipley
4. Fozzy plays at the end of the 4th Q
5. 28 4th quarter points is unacceptable
5. We put in the backups too late, did not like seeing colt and receivers play a little in the 4th
MJY6087 - October 18, 2008
Mack's Philosophy
is to keep his starters in until the other coach decides to take out his starters. It is a good rule to live by, they want to keep playing, we’ll keep playing
bignick573 - October 19, 2008
Good one...
And a fair approach…shouldn’t expect to be able to run your 1s against our 2s and 3s. You wanna play…no problem – we’ll play, but don’t whine if we hang 70 on you.
HOOK ’EM…!
Horns757 - October 21, 2008
Wow
Awesome win tonight. Texas is firmly in the driver’s seat and the Heisman is McCoy’s to lose. Congrats, though as an SEC fan I am obliged to remind everyone that defense wins championships.
Yes I know a lot of Missouri’s points came after it was out of hand, but I think it’s in my contract or something. At some point, you might want to hold a ranked opponent to under 30 points to shut up the remaining naysayers. Just saying.
Year2 - October 18, 2008
Well...
Didn’t we give up 38 when we won the championship that one time? It’s about the scoreboard baby.
Let me quote Muschamp – “Stats are for losers”
goingforthecorner - October 18, 2008
In 2005, Texas was 10th in total defense and 8th in scoring defense. That team had a championship-caliber defense.
Year2 - October 19, 2008
dude
look at the offenses we played in 2005 and tell me that 1 of them other than USC was even close to either OU’s or MIzzou’s offense in 2008.
billyzane - October 19, 2008
I think we lack experience overall in our secondary
but I dont remember our 2005 defense holding down opponents under 20 yds in first 4 possessions against very good offense
hookemkp - October 19, 2008
Well, at least we didn't lose to a team that is qbed by a guy that couldnt make our team.
run Bevo run - October 18, 2008
Mack Brown didn't bury anything
He simply digged this up.
goingforthecorner - October 18, 2008
This team
What a great game. The first half was a total statement. Yes Missouri did get some points in the second half. However, they were playing their first string all game and we rotated a lot of our backups.
There are still some very good teams left on our schedule and some possible losses. I really believe the win streak continues but either way I am really proud of our Horns.
71grad - October 19, 2008
I had to read the Mizzou game blog
http://www.rockmnation.com/2008/10/18/634162/live-thread-mizzou-at-texa#comments
Did you know that we UT fans all like having gay sex?
goingforthecorner - October 19, 2008
Mizzou fans are funny
But a bunch of Jerks!!
We never bash the other team like that do we?
blazzinken - October 19, 2008
They spend more time...
bitchin about their history of suck or postin pictures of puppies. Oh well, gota act like you know how to win.
Bevoboy94 - October 19, 2008
Mizzwho?
At least one of their fans is not completely insane…
“Gentlemen, it’s become completely apparent to me…
…that we’re not a big boy team yet.”
That was a completely incredible game. The home crowd was definitely a factor. The noise level in the first half was monumental every time Mizzou had the ball. What a beatdown!!
Margaritaking - October 20, 2008
Wow
Those are the most blinded by bias group of fans I’ve seen outside of aTm.
My favorite parts are where they claim that Colt isn’t very good because he only throws short passes. It’s like:
A. They selectively forget a significant portion of the game
B. Ignore the fact that their offense is actually built around those types of passes
Meekrob - October 19, 2008
I dont know if anyone saw this comment but i like this guy!
Aside from the good to be a Tiger, i think he was the only Tiger that knew what they were getting into
blazzinken - October 19, 2008
It's always wise to see the long road to now.
We’re burning up the road right now and that’s great. However, the real mark of a champion is that you win when you aren’t playing your best. That’s our bump in the road some cold night.
whills - October 19, 2008
As them Mizzo boys said...
remember what K-Satae did the the great ou team in 2003. It could be the same for us if Coach BOOM is snached from us. Coach BOOB’s brother Mikey took over for our ex-head coach. (Looking back, Johnnie Mac acutally did something good for us.)
Bevoboy94 - October 19, 2008
Yeah,
I’m thinking Kansas ’05.
tdwalsh - October 19, 2008
I dont think you are...
We were up 52-0 on Kansas at halftime in 2005.
2004 on the other hand, was another story.
BoddickerIsClutch - October 19, 2008
Yeah, we'd be down to Baylor, Kansas and aTm if we survive the next two weeks.
Baylor we catch at home. Briles is probably already working on a game plan; he doesn’t need to win the game, he just needs to stay close. He doesn’t have the firepower at this point, but he does have some weapons. He’s wanting respect and recruits and he’d have plenty of playing time to promise.
We have a institutional hard-on to whip the living hell out of aTm.
Kansas on a cold night is what I’m really considering. So, the Jayhawks have the motivation, the coaching acumen and offensive skill sets to get some points and can play decent D for a while. Bad weather levels the playing field in many situations; TOs and bad breaks can exacerbate it even further. Dangerous game.
Maybe no one can stop the wave the Horns have started; if so, only the Horns can stop themselves. So far there has been great psychological care taken with this team and hopefully that will continue.
whills - October 19, 2008

DO WORK!
If are guys can stay humble and keep there heads on straight we are yet to see this team peak. I will tell you what ,those last 2 games that was focused TEXAN football, if we play focused football like that there is not one team in the country who can play with us. O yea and i like how Texas’s stars all give the honor and glory to God , GOD BLESS TEXAS HOOKEM!
