Talkin' Texas Football: Podcast v 1.1

Scipio and I agreed that tonight's podcast went well by any standard, but especially for a first go-round of 80 minutes of non-stop Texas talk. We were especially pleased so many readers tuned in live, but for those who missed the broadcast, an mp3 of the show is provided after the jump. Among the many topics covered:

  • Texas' tense survival of Oklahoma State
  • An interview with Seth from the outstanding Tech blog Double T Nation
  • Why Will Muschamp is succeeding now with players still learning to be great
  • Greg Davis' strengths and weaknesses as a coordinator
  • The amazing evolution of Mack Brown... via the fortuitous loss to A&M?
  • What Fozzy Whittaker can and can't do for the 2008 Longhorns
  • Why Jim Delaney is the smartest asshole in the room

Great stuff but,

now I can’t sleep, because I’m too jacked for the game!

Fozzy

GD will unleash Fozzy this week. Assuming TT sticks to their defensive tendencies and blitzes the usual amount, it should give Fozzy the opportunity to have plenty of carries (12-15) to make a difference, while keeping OG involved on third down situations.

Question

This is a random and pointless question…but I’m curious. Does Texas really get this jacked to play the Aggies every year? I realize your primary rival is OU, but the Aggies are pretty adamant that UT is theirs. I argue that you guys don’t give them near the attention and pucker-factor as you give Tech. In decades past, maybe, but not in the last 10 years or so.

We really don’t have a natural rivalry, so we had to go into the stands and whip some aggy ass to create one years back.

I would argue.....

No. IMO our players see Aggy as a weak and inferior team and we subsequently play down to their level (i.e. the past three years really). We come in on our high horses and expect to win by showing up. We expect to win against OU by showing up and playing our best game. I think the players defenitely care more about OU than aggy, or Tech for that matter. I see OU as being the only game our players circle on their calender. All the others are just “Were Texas, and were your Super Bowl” as we like to say around here. Hope that hepls.

Some truth there, I'd bet.
Well, you probably could have gone into the stands and found worse.

Lately Tech has been a lot more entertaining than aggie, even with their wins.

This year will not be normal wrt aggie because we will be intent on a serious ass whipping of biblical proportions, so this will really be the top of the cycle. Right now we’re more concerned with taking care of business…and aggie are lost in their own solipsistic cartoon {Ags have the best defense in the conference, we should be in the top 25}. We’ll pay attention when we have to. No use wasting it. It not like they’re going away anytime soon.

There is a profound and continuous cycle of aggie abuse; we never really stop. Just ignoring them is abuse, because they get used to it and want more and more, so cuttin’ them off is just abuse of a different nature.

We pay attention to tech because y’all have funny hats, parrots on your shoulders and you score a lot. As much as we say half-way nice things about Lubbock – it is in Texas – we really feel sorry for those souls there. At most, you’re making the best of a bad situation with good lookin’ women. We respect that.

Lubbock is an acquired taste, no doubt. Most people hate it when they first get there, but by the time they leave, the charm of the city has kind of overtaken the obvious negatives.

My Opinion (which probably sucks)

OU goes without saying, as my grandfather says “He would rather lose to Al Qaeda” (yes I know he is nuts).

A&M on the other hand, is like the annoying shit talking little brother who always wants to compete against you in everything. You have proven time and time again you are far more superior (except on a few lucky occasions) in everything possible, but he runs his mouth so much that the competition never gets old neither does winning. Going in to an A&M game, you always know there is a possibility of losing, but you don’t know how in the world it could happen, unless we just give it to them by playing flat and executing horrendously.

The reason it may seem we get more “jacked” to play you is because unlike A&M recently you have had a lot of success, and there is a fear factor that is tangible heading in to the game, your offense. We all know going in to the game how we could end up losing, you simply outscore us. It is very easy to pay attention because you have the ability play with us. You may not be able to stop us, but you can certainly hang around. Simply stating it is much easier to be “jacked” for a game when their is real competition.

Great discussion PB & Scip

This type of forum stands out by several leagues from the trash that is gargled on tv and other sports journalists’ hideouts.

Besides good looking women, during windy days tumbleweed search & destroy missions are pretty entertaining on road missions to and beyond Lubbock.

Other than OU

I think it depends on the quality of the opponent who UT’s top rival is. In the 1960s, Arkansas was THE game. Arguably bigger than OU in many seasons. The Aggies were co-biggest rival (with OU) from the mid ‘80s until Mack Brown came along, with Texas usually in the underdog role. Now it’s OU, then Tech, then Aggies. Texas has not played the Ags well the last four seasons (2-2, but not exactly dominant in the wins). Texas is No. 1 or 2 on the most wanted list of every team in the Big 12 South (except OSU).

As of now

some may say Tech is the new Aggie

I always preferred Sand Aggies
Good pilot

Scipio did awright there. He had some insightful commentary and you two have got some good chemistry going. Double TT input was appreciated and board was lively.

Regarding board, is it possible to start a live blog feature for game thread (Cover It Live, perhaps)? The popularity of BON blogger participation during games is creating a geriatric network condition and takes away a lot of the spontenaighty in virtual fandom. This has become a popular blogging tool as evidenced by Dr. Saturday’s blog and even Bevo Beat on the Statesman site. Heck, I would pay to play if necessary. Thoughts? Buehler? Buehler?

Thanks, and a question

First, thanks. Glad you enjoyed the podcast.

As for the live blog thing: I’m not clear on a couple things:

1) What, precisely do you mean by: “The popularity of BON blogger participation during games is creating a geriatric network condition and takes away a lot of the spontenaighty in virtual fandom.” I’m just not sure what you’re saying here? Some clarification would help me address you better.

2) Cover It Live: Yes, it’s popular, but I can assure you that bloggers hate it. The thing is an enormous pain in the ass to run and isn’t as open/egalitarian/community-oriented as the open thread formats we use. With that said, we’re ALWAYS looking for ways to improve open chat threads. Are you suggesting an ability for the site blogger to be providing Live Blog commentary? What other features would make open game threads more enjoyable?

Sorry for answering your requests with a string of questions; I assure you it’s because I’d like to be as responsive as possible. Thanks for the feedback…

PB - was a blast

The show was great and the discussion good but the discussion by text with the other parties was a blast. Everyone, I encourage you to join in next time.

Gracias

We had a lot of fun podcasting, and you’re right: the chat board takes things up a level. Very glad you were actively making that what it was.

And yes: Hopefully even more will join in the chat next time. It’s a riot.

You did a great job and I think this sort of thing, whether with UT or Tech or whomever, is the next wave of media barnstorming. It’s a completely natural off-shoot of blogging and sports radio. Very well done, sir.

Got to listem to most all of it. Very engaging, great info.

Y’all finally got into some real meat, too.

You need some work on equalizing the various sound fields. Do you have a cyber editing board or a sound engineer to help in that respect? Last week the echo was very distracting, better this week.
