Rumors abound, including a published report on Orangebloods, that Mack Brown's successor will be named today. And that it's Will Muschamp.
If true: Oh. My. God.
UPDATE: BOOM! Confirmed at MB-TF!!! Will Muschamp is your next head coach. There is a God, and he wears burnt orange. Halle-freaking-lujah!
A note: "Timing" is the word of the day, as in: (1) Why make this announcement/move now? And (2) Why did it have to come 1.5 hours before my moot court oral arguments? Here I am, rehearsing the post I'm going to write this evening, instead of rehearsing my arguments for moot court. So it goes.... Regardless, I'll have a full post tonight on why I think this is the right decision, and why the timing--a legitimate question--doesn't change that.

$900,000
Starting Jan 1.
This is great news but kind of a wierd time to announce it
blazzinken - November 18, 2008
rumors were that the other UT
was high on Muschamp. Announcing now ensures he doesn’t leave for Knoxville.

makes sense

No distractions
Get it done with now. Love it.
LOVE IT

No kidding.
Helluva move. Cant wait for the rest of the season and 2009.
BoddickerIsClutch - November 18, 2008
Congratulations Coach Muschamp!
This made my day (and week and month and year).
bravobevo - November 18, 2008
you said it
not only is it exciting to know that Muschamp will succeed Mack, we also get to finally have some continuity on defense. I’m downright giddy about the possibilities that are in store for the Browns, Aaron Williams, Kindle, Muck, Gideon, Scott, Thomas and the whole cast of characters.
2008 is not over by any means, and we already know we’ve got a hell of a team to look forward to in 2009. There really is no better place to be than behind behind a program that has its focus squarely on the national championship.
Congrats to Deloss & Mack for getting this one right.
BMG - November 18, 2008
We gain...
….solid continuity, recruiting to a strong defensive leader and an insurance policy for the backend of Mack’s tenure at Texas – no dropoff.

MN_longhorny - November 18, 2008
What about Major?
Is he the next Greg Davis?
blazzinken - November 18, 2008
Major
I hope he is the next OC, but not the next Greg Davis. We want him to be better than Davis!
jordansb - November 18, 2008
Thats what i was shooting for
The OC for a long time.
blazzinken - November 18, 2008
Major will be a head coach one day, but for now
I see GD riding off into the sunset with Mack, hopefully leaving Major to run the offense with Coach Muschamp.

Hells yeah.
Seriously though, what about Major?
That sucks for him.
joenewby4040 - November 18, 2008
Nah
I don’t think he could possibly have a problem with being the future OC and/or QB coach.
goingforthecorner - November 18, 2008
Goodbye, Major
This looks like a minority view, but I will express it anyway. Mack could coach another 5 years or so. Muschamp is young enough, he could then coach another 20 years after that. Do you really think Major will be content to stay an OC for 20 plus years? Second, Muschamp has been here less than a year while debate has recently raged on this site about whether the defense is significantly improved (or just seems like it because of the Muschamp mythology). Now he has been make head coach-elect. I am sure this was necessary to avoid losing him to another program, but the decision, and definitely all the hype and celebration, seem premature.
OBdoc - November 19, 2008
So, after this announcement, you are ready for Muschamp to be the head coach at Texas for 20 years??
First off, if he was the head coach for 20 years, we should be jumping up and down for joy. The only man who has coached at Texas near that long is one Darrell K Royal, and if you look around, people pretty much still like him.
Is there any coach in the modern era who has been at one program for 20 years that isnt considered great?
Second his contract is going to be for 5 years, and you’d be a fool to not think there is going to be some buyout option.
Third, you are not sold on Muschamp, but are sold on Major? Muschamp’s resume is a helluva lot more impressive than Major’s is. Im glad to have Major back as much as the next guy, but theres no way that you can be that Major would be a better head coach than Will.
Fourth, not that it significantly matters to the discussion, but his defense is better. Anyone watching the games can tell you that. And if you need stats to prove it, check scoring defense, and pass efficiency D.
Look I dont know what kind of head coach he will make, Mack seems to think he will be a good one, and Mack should know. But more importantly, Im excited that this means he is here as our D coordinator for the near future, and that is something we should be very excited about. Everyone wasnt looking for Will because he was a bad coach…
BoddickerIsClutch - November 19, 2008
What does he want?
It could be the Applewhite does not look forward to doing all the things that are expected of a head coach — the administration, the alumni relations, the hiring and firing, etc. Maybe he just wants to coach football and do it at UT. I have no doubt that he has been well considered in this move and that if he had a problem with it, that would have been addressed as well.
Caradoc - November 19, 2008
Jan 1 2010
Mack gets a 2 mil bonus or something….could that be the day?
blazzinken - November 18, 2008
No way... like he said, he's got 8 years on the contract...
I would guess that they’re preemptively rewarding him for making it to the MNC!!!
TXinDC - November 18, 2008
Deloss also said
Theres a part of Macks contract that says if he decides to stop coaching he has a $500k/yr position waiting for him in the athletic department. Dunno if its for the duration of his 8yr remaining contract or not though..
BoddickerIsClutch - November 18, 2008

I know he’s still young, but I was looking forward to Major being the Head Coach in 5-10 years.
HornsFaninCalifornia - November 18, 2008
Best part is that he is going to be groomed into this…rather than jumping…coz he has a lot to live upto
MN_longhorny - November 18, 2008
Major
I hope Major stays as I think he will be a great coach. Will he be a better OC than Davis? I imagine so. However, putting him in to be the head coach when Mack steps down is asking a lot when he doesn’t have a few years of coordinator experience. That’s a big jump, even if he grew up in the program. I think the risk would be big to promise that to him. His prior experience as an OC was dampered by the coaches he worked for (Rice the HC ran the office and at Alabama I’m sure Saban kept things tight and would have trouble putting his faith in a youngh coach he hasn’t woked with.) Still, I hope he stays for a while and at some point gets a shot at a big job he deserves, whether it be Texas or a school we don’t play. Hopefully Mack doesn’t bring in Simms to be an OC over him…
twn202hornsup - November 18, 2008
We all love Major
But he is greener than Sunday’s bananas at the store. This is the right move at the right time. Awesome! 2008 has been such a great ride as a Longhorn football fan, and we ain’t done yet!!
Horndogger - November 18, 2008
Not in 5 years
THis all depends on how much longer Mack is planning on being here. If he is leaving within the next 2 years, yes, Major will still be somewhat inexperienced. But Major will not still be “green” if Mack staya another 5 years or so. As young as both Mac and Muschamp are, the head coach position could be set for another 25 years, and I don’t think Major will want to stay around that long.
OBdoc - November 19, 2008
Last fall...
When we were talking about a new coach at A&M Muschamps name was mentioned a lot.
There were two big detractors:
1) He doesnt recruit much, he has a different personality off the field more stiff…
2) Poor organizational/mgmt skills
This isnt a sour grapes deal, a large number of us were against a Muschamp hire.
But, then again, maybe it was all just rumor… and he has changed.
K2HMFIC - November 18, 2008
But...
All the rumors are that his players absolutely love playing for him – that has to count in recruiting. I agree with your point though in that the concern may be if he is enough of a politician to handle the off the field stuff.
twn202hornsup - November 18, 2008
Exactly - who gives a darn if he bakes your mom a cake and does the Mack Clap - recruits will know he's fun to work with
TXinDC - November 18, 2008
And who better to mentor him for a year or two than
the master politician Mack Brown.
the1austin - November 18, 2008
Man, a lot of Aggies were against him?
Damn, that changes everything. Maybe we should hire Bill Byrne and replace DeLoss immediately.
the1austin - November 18, 2008
Im not flaming...
If you guys are excited, great! He does a great job coaching defense and could be the next Bob Stoops.
But, we got the same story from LSU/AU folks.
Maybe it was wrong…
K2HMFIC - November 18, 2008
You do bring up some good points
But, if I’ve learned anything from our athletic department its that I trust Mack and DeLoss to do the right thing. Texas can have just about any coach they want right now. If they know Muschamp’s the man, I trust that a lot more than fans on message boards.
the1austin - November 18, 2008
Your AD is pretty competent...
Honestly, I think the rationale went like this:
- Mack doesnt want to be Paterono/Bowden and coach forever(maybe he wants to be Barry Alvarez) so his time is coming soon
- This way the Horns can market the replacement and dont have to worry about a loss in recruiting
- If it becomes apparent this guy cant be a HC worth a shit or his defenses start to suck then you “only” spent 900K and go out and grab Butch Davis or Lane Kiffin.
K2HMFIC - November 18, 2008
Im not a byrne fan BUT
He had the sherm hire forced on him & made a questionable hire with Turgeon…
K2HMFIC - November 18, 2008
The biggest decision and AD can possible make..
Especially in Texas, is who to hire as the head coach of the football team. If BB had his head coach “forced on him” then something tells me he isn’t the strongest AD. And, for you to say DeLoss Dodds is “pretty competent” is stunning. Anyway, I get what you were saying…
the1austin - November 18, 2008
my saying pretty competent is a compliment if you knew me...
A&M is 75 mil in the red with capital projects. BMA"s told him hire sherman or we withold funding…
K2HMFIC - November 18, 2008
IF
“it was all just a rumor” then why would it matter that he “changed”? It should be: Maybe it was all just rumors, therefore it is all untrue. It can’t be rumor, true, and thus needs be corrected, right?
Skin Patrol - November 18, 2008
The whole deal is
Texas has made some great coaching moves over the last ten years…
A&M has made some good moves (Gellespie) and some bad moves won’t mention any names.
I trust Mack and Deloss to make the right choices
blazzinken - November 18, 2008
Strange
Everyone I know in SEC country maintains that he is a quality recruiter, and was impressive at Auburn.
learned hand - November 18, 2008
Recruiting and management......
He may not be a great recruiter or manager/organizer at this point, but he just signed up to attend the Mack Brown school of recruiting for the next few years. I’ve been critical of Mack at times, but you never here anyone criticize his ability to recruit and manage the team. He’s one of the best in that department.
In a few years, Mack wil rub off on him and Muschamp will be a little different. It won’t be “BOOM motherf$cker!” anymore. It will be “BOOM! …..I love you Texas high school coaches……motherf$cker!”

patienthornsfan - November 18, 2008

Now that Muschamp is locked up, this increases the likelihood that Brent Venables gets hired away from the Land Thieves, and thus increases the likelihood that McFarland comes here. (assuming McFarland likes stability at DC)

This is the right situation for Major. He needs to become OC before he should even consider a head coaching gig. Texas is undoubtedly Major’s home, and I would expect that when Muschamp decides to chase superbowls one day Major will have all the keys to the kingdom.
Yet again Mack shows us why he’s best in the business.

But I don’t see Mack stringing out Muschamp the way Bowden is with Jimbo Fisher. Colt is a senior next year, we are going to be in a great position to make a title run… just saying… the pieces are in place for a great run next year. Mack could pull a Costanza and leave on a high note.

The first half of the Deloss era SUCKED
I remember some of the crap going on in The Department through about 1996. However, since the hiring of Mack, Deloss has righted the Ship and The Program is as strong as ever. Good thing I don’t pull the triggers, cause it would have happend in ’96 after Gus was canned, then route 66, the Penders crap, the Baseball team going to crap, etc… Then between ’98 and 2001, things got moving and look where we are now. Mack just needs to keep the $$$$ coming in and run a clean Department.
Bevoboy94 - November 18, 2008
I think Mack is next in line
and the right person for the AD job.
abtxutfan - November 18, 2008
I cannot see MB messing it up...
He has got to name his replacement (Uncle DR couldn’t do that). I think DD has The Program in a strong position. I think Mack continues that model. It’s working not in the Big $$$ College Sports World.
Bevoboy94 - November 18, 2008

I think UT will spend some real time choosing the AD. I suspect Mack would fill it for a while until a final selection is made.

whills - November 18, 2008
Geez!!! Given the comments
already made, I’m scared you guys will be coming for my head. But, here goes. If you’re gonna have a debate, somebody has to take the unpopular side:
I think this is a highly questionable decision. I love what Muschamp ha done and the attitude he has brought. But he has never been a head coach and this is being done based on less than one season’s observations. Why rush it? Give the man a huge raise and put thie promise of being the HC-in-waiting out there for him to shoot for next year or the year after.
edsp - November 18, 2008
Because by that time,
he’d be gone already. Might as well do it now, especially when McFarland’s still out there.
ChiFan13 - November 18, 2008
5 year contract
Dodds said his head coaching contract will be 5 years. So I think the idea is you take the risk of having 5 bad years, or 5 years of declining success, for the possible reward of continuing the success you’re having right now.
hornbone - November 18, 2008
Several reasons edsp:
-Mack Deloss and co. are doing what they think is the right move – keeping a valuable coach as part of the team. (Look at previous Texas coordinators)
-The players love him.
-Who would not want to play for Muschamp???
-Eradicate any possibilities of Greg Davis becoming the head coach
-Muschamp is ready to strap on the helmet and kill some mo@)&#&#s.
Ultra Horn - November 18, 2008

BoddickerIsClutch - November 18, 2008
So did I! rec'd.
the1austin - November 18, 2008
You sort of miss my point, Ultra Horn
Which is my fault, because I didn’t state it well enough.
It’s not that they didn’t hire the right man — it’s why hire ANYBODY? Especially, why do it with somebody who has been on the job 10 months? I love Coach Boom. If Deloss HAD TO MAKE A HIRE, he made the right one. I don’t think he had to make one.
And, while I felt DeLoss made some terrible hires early on, I credit him for Mack and Rick Barnes and Augie and many, many other coaching hires over the last 10-15 years. UT’s spot atop intercollegiate athletics is due in large part of Dodds. I hope his hot hand continues.
edsp - November 18, 2008
Stability at the top of the chain.
Mack said he “knew (Will) was the real deal as soon as he got here.” It sounds like Mack had a lot to do with the hiring. Why not keep Clemson, Tennessee, Washington, and potentially Auburn away from the guy if they know he’s the right guy?
the1austin - November 18, 2008
edsp
I see your question better now. I was also really excited earlier. I still am.
I think one part might be keeping Muschamp here for one more year. The year of the 2nd National Championship for Mack. Let others and me come back to this question, but I don’t think that’s a small reason :].
Ultra Horn - November 18, 2008

I suspect that there is a palatable buyout provision
That exists before he takes the HC job – at which point he may be difficult to dislodge – but until then I suspect that his contractual “rights” to the head coaching jobs are subject to an out clause for UT such that we wouldn’t be “stuck” with him should the tide turn.

Also, PB was particularly interested in the timing of the announcement. Mack answered that question:
the1austin - November 18, 2008
Lack of experience with Muschamp no problem
Lets not act like Muschamp will be our head coach next year. It won’t be for a loooong time. In the mean time, Mack will provide him with plenty of experience (even hands on) at coaching and recruiting. For the next few years while Mack is coaching, Will will be groomed into the position. He’ll learn all the intricate details he needs to know.
Fantastic move, and fantastic timing.

Will the timing and publicity of this help Texas in the polls in a subconcious “more news gets more exposure” kind of way? I think it might.
inVINCEable - November 18, 2008
I was thinking the same thing. Agree that it could be helpful in votes late in the year--any perception of growing strength in our program has to be a plus.
BurntOrangeSunset - November 18, 2008
we just got the next bob stoops
except, we got the better one! BOOMMOTHERF**KER!
Hook'em13 - November 18, 2008
We can't ask anything more...
I luv MB… no one can argue what he has done for Texas especially, I admire his nurturing skills on his players. But I welcome this fresh change for this program. It’s time for us to have an aggressive HC. Forget Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Bob Stoops. Muschamp is the most aggressive creature on the sideline I have ever seen. All he just says one word “BOOM”, Meyers/Miles/Stoops will fall down on the floor. No contest.
Defense win games. Look what New York Giant did last year. We have the defensive beast = Muschamp + the offensive genius = Applewhite. What can we ask for more?
I can’t imagine what will be our recruiting rating looks like when the next season comes. But I know our program will have long prosper years to come!
To celebrate this great news, I would appreciate it if someone can complie all of the high jumps that Muschamp has made on the sideline and post it on youtube. Many Thanks.

Get the Boom MFer T-shirts printed-up!!
This news just freaking rocks.
burntup - November 18, 2008
also
i think it is safe to say that our chances with mcfarland just hit sky high.
Hook'em13 - November 18, 2008
WWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Mack and am in no hurry to seem him leave, but this is exciting, exciting news. I assume that near, or before that time, years from now, Greg Davis will be succeeded by Major Applewhite. Congrats to Coach Muschamp! BOOM!
KevinJ - November 18, 2008
PB quits Law School???
C’mon PB, make this the best day ever and give up that silly lawyerin deal and take Bill Little’s spot!
Horange - November 18, 2008
our friends over at barking carnival
Do not share the same enthusiasm as us. Their attitude would indicate we just hired coach Fran on
Egonz - November 18, 2008
whoa
I just read that. Are they serious, or are the post/comments sarcastic?
Cyrus - November 18, 2008
there must be confusion/sarcasm...
hookemkp - November 18, 2008
Lots of sarcasm, a few aggies/red raiders/sooners, some cynics
learned hand - November 18, 2008
im a bit stunned by some of sooners and red raiders
thinking that this is actually a good news to them…
are they not seeing what muschamp has been able to do with our young inexperienced defense this yr?
I think I read a tech guy saying how tech was able to tear apart muschamps defense…I wonder if he went blind on second half..(minus the unspeakable turn of events in last 10 sec)
hookemkp - November 18, 2008
Wow... just Wow!
This is the best news I could’ve heard today about Texas football. Oh and timing… yeah it’s all about timing. People will talk about this all week as the OU vs. Tech thing warms up. We will be in the news this week a good bit and in people’s heads too (Harris and USA Today voters).
This could be the start of a seriously dominant run for us for quite sometime… I hope the Major is viewing this as good, because I think it is for him too. I have seen him and Muschamp high-fiving on the sidelines, and I suspect this will be good for them BOTH.
HornsFan87 - November 18, 2008
This team concept may run deeper than we think. nt
whills - November 18, 2008
I wonder what happens with Akina
Knowing he’ll never be head coach, does he jump to another program to be a D.C. and then H.C.? He’s a great position coach, and I just wonder what this does to him..
KevinJ - November 18, 2008
He has to realize that being a well paid position coach at a top program...
…beats getting fired after being a mediocre head coach for a mediocre program.
Brian.HalcYoN - November 18, 2008
Too many team saw him fail as our DC last year....
I don’t see him getting tons of offers as a DC or HC… especially not at an elite program.
the1austin - November 18, 2008
I think we want him here. We've got a good crop...and he knows it.
At the least, he can prove that he is one of the very best at his specialty and repair any damage done to his general reputation.
whills - November 18, 2008
not every coach wants promotion...some are just happy with what they have and how much they can handle
hookemkp - November 18, 2008
Case in point...Greg Davis
Johngo - November 18, 2008
I think that message
was sent last December and received positively by Akina — he opted to stay and be part of the team in whatever role Mack offered. Good for him. His best shot at being a HC is being part of a consistent Top 10 powerhouse.
edsp - November 18, 2008
I'm so booming happy!
just saw the crawl on espn. rewound it and watched it several times before dancing around the room yelling “boom”!
zissou - November 18, 2008
ahhhh.....
The more this sets in, the better it feels. This whole season I’ve thought about Muschamp much like I did with K. Durant: “He’s amazing, but don’t get too attached. Just savor the 1-2 years he’s a Horn.”
Now, the aggressive swagger and high flying attitude that he brought to the defense this year is the new identity of Texas Football…..for years to come! I’m just randomly punching and headbutting different objects around my apartment. Christmas came early this year.
BOOM!!!!! indeed.
TommyGunn - November 18, 2008
Holy Crap!!!
Xmas came early this year.
98horn - November 18, 2008
Short-term benefits, low long-term risks
As fascinated as I am at the prospect of Muschamp as our HC in the future, the big benefit for now is that he’s staying as our DC. In other words, those people worried that he’d leave after this year no longer have to, and we get to see Muschamp further develop this very talented and young defense.
Mack is not going anywhere anytime soon, and nobody wants him to retire too early. Thus, Muschamp gets the great opportunity to observe one of the best coaches in the country do his job to complement his already impressive X’s and O’s skills. If for whatever reason Muschamp turns out not to be the right guy (I have a feeling that he is, but just if), then we can cut ties without too many losses.
TheElusiveShadow - November 18, 2008
can we dedicate today as the "BOOM" nation day
hookemkp - November 18, 2008
BOOM DAY!!!
YES! And on a completely selfish note, i don’t have to change my handle! :)
Heart of a Muschampion - November 18, 2008
so...
the timing is great, IMHO. If anybody was concerned that we might get a little overlooked in this weekend’s shuffle since we don’t play until Thursday night, I think DD just made damn sure everybody in the media will be talkin’ about Texas all the way until next Sunday’s BCS announcement.
txex92 - November 18, 2008
This may have quelled some indecision about Muschamp's duration for some recruits.
Definitely a trump card in the recruiting wars. If Tech should make it all the way, this is about fighting for share in the Texas crop.
Give Tech faster receivers, a bigger, faster back and a comparable QB, make the D faster and more athletic and they’re, you know, a handful. Not immediately, but soon.
These are stakes in this particular configuration which seems to be occurring now…or in the immediate future. This implies Texas can lay another card on the table next Thursday and seal the deal. And if OU loses, particularly if they lose by a lot, they could be the one to lose a share.
whills - November 18, 2008
Just think
How you felt the second the a&m game ended last year. Now think how much things have changed…
Props to Deloss. Big props to Mack when many said that he couldn’t/wouldn’t change.
SaintBevo - November 18, 2008
I really hope this helps our recruiting this year, or I wonder if that’s why they might have made this move when they did. Hopefully we can lure in Mcfarland and possibly even Loston?
kcmorse - November 18, 2008
Loston
No chance.
McFarland? 50/50 — His decision is down to us and the Land Thieves. This recent news should help.
jordansb - November 18, 2008
Love that we will see great defenses at Texas for years
Everybody else want to focus on offense…
krelldoggy - November 18, 2008
Dominating defense...
…used to be a hallmark of Texas football. Thank God we’ve wrapped up a guy who will re-instill defensive intensity for years to come. I couldn’t be happier with the direction of this program, now!
BurntOrangeBoom - November 18, 2008
BOOM MOTHERF***ERRRRRRRRRR
But wait, doesn’t this mean we’re guaranteed to lose Applewhite in the near future?
boommotherfcker - November 18, 2008
Not if Applewhite is smart
GD will be put out to pasture when Mack turns the reigns over to Boom. Major needs OC experience with a quality program. What better program than Texas? He’ll be able to write his own ticket after a few seasons of success with the top program in the nation.
BurntOrangeBoom - November 18, 2008
Whoopie!!!
Seriously. This feels like a warm blanket as I complacently contemplate 30 years of dominance with 3 or 4 MNC in the package.
duras - November 18, 2008
In the next 30 years...
I don’t want to get ahead of myself but im thinking 10 or 11 Championship…

Mack to be the new Deloss?
So, when Mack steps down as head coach can anyone else see him as the new Deloss Dodds??
Bombilla - November 19, 2008
or be like coach darryll...just chill...go to practices and games...deloss dodds is doing pretty good job
hookemkp - November 19, 2008
I don't see it
I can’t see Mack as AD. I see him as an ambassador who draws his $500K and shows up for speeches and photo-ops. Not to mention the fact that running a $120 million athletic program requires skills for which he has no training. Times have changed.
BurntOrangeBoom - November 19, 2008
BOOM MOTHERFU*KER!!!!!!!!!

Another masterstroke by DeLoss Dodds. That man has made us what we are today.

Just remembered some interesting commentary during the Mizzou game
During the Mizzou game at some point, the camera focused on Muschamp on the sideline, and the banter between Musburger and Herbstreit went something like this:
Herbstreit: He’s certainly going to be considered for some jobs during the off-seaon.
Musburger: You know, I might wait a couple of years if I were him. (brief awkward silence) Anyway, back to the game…
When I heard that, Musberger’s tone of voice kind of made it sound like he had inadvertently started talking about something told to him off-the-record (such as a head coach perhaps telling him that he’s thinking about hanging it up in a year or two), realized what he was stating to saying and changed the subject quickly.
Did anyone else pick that up at the time? I forgot to bring it up after the game, but it just came back to me in the context of yesterday’s announcement. Of course this is pure speculation, but if I heard what I thought Musburger was beginning to say, that provides a lot greater context to what may or may not have been said behind closed doors as to just how soon Muschamp would be able to take the reins.
