This looks like a minority view, but I will express it anyway. Mack could coach another 5 years or so. Muschamp is young enough, he could then coach another 20 years after that. Do you really think Major will be content to stay an OC for 20 plus years? Second, Muschamp has been here less than a year while debate has recently raged on this site about whether the defense is significantly improved (or just seems like it because of the Muschamp mythology). Now he has been make head coach-elect. I am sure this was necessary to avoid losing him to another program, but the decision, and definitely all the hype and celebration, seem premature.

First off, if he was the head coach for 20 years, we should be jumping up and down for joy. The only man who has coached at Texas near that long is one Darrell K Royal, and if you look around, people pretty much still like him.

Is there any coach in the modern era who has been at one program for 20 years that isnt considered great?

Second his contract is going to be for 5 years, and you’d be a fool to not think there is going to be some buyout option.

Third, you are not sold on Muschamp, but are sold on Major? Muschamp’s resume is a helluva lot more impressive than Major’s is. Im glad to have Major back as much as the next guy, but theres no way that you can be that Major would be a better head coach than Will.

Fourth, not that it significantly matters to the discussion, but his defense is better. Anyone watching the games can tell you that. And if you need stats to prove it, check scoring defense, and pass efficiency D.

Look I dont know what kind of head coach he will make, Mack seems to think he will be a good one, and Mack should know. But more importantly, Im excited that this means he is here as our D coordinator for the near future, and that is something we should be very excited about. Everyone wasnt looking for Will because he was a bad coach…

What does he want?

It could be the Applewhite does not look forward to doing all the things that are expected of a head coach — the administration, the alumni relations, the hiring and firing, etc. Maybe he just wants to coach football and do it at UT. I have no doubt that he has been well considered in this move and that if he had a problem with it, that would have been addressed as well.

Theres a part of Macks contract that says if he decides to stop coaching he has a $500k/yr position waiting for him in the athletic department. Dunno if its for the duration of his 8yr remaining contract or not though..

I hope Major stays as I think he will be a great coach. Will he be a better OC than Davis? I imagine so. However, putting him in to be the head coach when Mack steps down is asking a lot when he doesn’t have a few years of coordinator experience. That’s a big jump, even if he grew up in the program. I think the risk would be big to promise that to him. His prior experience as an OC was dampered by the coaches he worked for (Rice the HC ran the office and at Alabama I’m sure Saban kept things tight and would have trouble putting his faith in a youngh coach he hasn’t woked with.) Still, I hope he stays for a while and at some point gets a shot at a big job he deserves, whether it be Texas or a school we don’t play. Hopefully Mack doesn’t bring in Simms to be an OC over him…

Not in 5 years

THis all depends on how much longer Mack is planning on being here. If he is leaving within the next 2 years, yes, Major will still be somewhat inexperienced. But Major will not still be “green” if Mack staya another 5 years or so. As young as both Mac and Muschamp are, the head coach position could be set for another 25 years, and I don’t think Major will want to stay around that long.

Last fall...

When we were talking about a new coach at A&M Muschamps name was mentioned a lot.

There were two big detractors:

1) He doesnt recruit much, he has a different personality off the field more stiff…
2) Poor organizational/mgmt skills

This isnt a sour grapes deal, a large number of us were against a Muschamp hire.

But, then again, maybe it was all just rumor… and he has changed.

But...

All the rumors are that his players absolutely love playing for him – that has to count in recruiting. I agree with your point though in that the concern may be if he is enough of a politician to handle the off the field stuff.

But, if I’ve learned anything from our athletic department its that I trust Mack and DeLoss to do the right thing. Texas can have just about any coach they want right now. If they know Muschamp’s the man, I trust that a lot more than fans on message boards.

Honestly, I think the rationale went like this:

- Mack doesnt want to be Paterono/Bowden and coach forever(maybe he wants to be Barry Alvarez) so his time is coming soon
- This way the Horns can market the replacement and dont have to worry about a loss in recruiting
- If it becomes apparent this guy cant be a HC worth a shit or his defenses start to suck then you “only” spent 900K and go out and grab Butch Davis or Lane Kiffin.

The biggest decision and AD can possible make..

Especially in Texas, is who to hire as the head coach of the football team. If BB had his head coach “forced on him” then something tells me he isn’t the strongest AD. And, for you to say DeLoss Dodds is “pretty competent” is stunning. Anyway, I get what you were saying…

A&M has made some good moves (Gellespie) and some bad moves won’t mention any names.

He may not be a great recruiter or manager/organizer at this point, but he just signed up to attend the Mack Brown school of recruiting for the next few years. I’ve been critical of Mack at times, but you never here anyone criticize his ability to recruit and manage the team. He’s one of the best in that department.

In a few years, Mack wil rub off on him and Muschamp will be a little different. It won’t be “BOOM motherf$cker!” anymore. It will be “BOOM! …..I love you Texas high school coaches……motherf$cker!”

But I don’t see Mack stringing out Muschamp the way Bowden is with Jimbo Fisher. Colt is a senior next year, we are going to be in a great position to make a title run… just saying… the pieces are in place for a great run next year. Mack could pull a Costanza and leave on a high note.

The first half of the Deloss era SUCKED

I remember some of the crap going on in The Department through about 1996. However, since the hiring of Mack, Deloss has righted the Ship and The Program is as strong as ever. Good thing I don’t pull the triggers, cause it would have happend in ’96 after Gus was canned, then route 66, the Penders crap, the Baseball team going to crap, etc… Then between ’98 and 2001, things got moving and look where we are now. Mack just needs to keep the $$$$ coming in and run a clean Department.

I think this is a highly questionable decision. I love what Muschamp ha done and the attitude he has brought. But he has never been a head coach and this is being done based on less than one season’s observations. Why rush it? Give the man a huge raise and put thie promise of being the HC-in-waiting out there for him to shoot for next year or the year after.

Dodds said his head coaching contract will be 5 years. So I think the idea is you take the risk of having 5 bad years, or 5 years of declining success, for the possible reward of continuing the success you’re having right now.

-Mack Deloss and co. are doing what they think is the right move – keeping a valuable coach as part of the team. (Look at previous Texas coordinators)

-The players love him.

-Who would not want to play for Muschamp???

Which is my fault, because I didn’t state it well enough.

It’s not that they didn’t hire the right man — it’s why hire ANYBODY? Especially, why do it with somebody who has been on the job 10 months? I love Coach Boom. If Deloss HAD TO MAKE A HIRE, he made the right one. I don’t think he had to make one.

And, while I felt DeLoss made some terrible hires early on, I credit him for Mack and Rick Barnes and Augie and many, many other coaching hires over the last 10-15 years. UT’s spot atop intercollegiate athletics is due in large part of Dodds. I hope his hot hand continues.

Mack said he “knew (Will) was the real deal as soon as he got here.” It sounds like Mack had a lot to do with the hiring. Why not keep Clemson, Tennessee, Washington, and potentially Auburn away from the guy if they know he’s the right guy?

I see your question better now. I was also really excited earlier. I still am.

I think one part might be keeping Muschamp here for one more year. The year of the 2nd National Championship for Mack. Let others and me come back to this question, but I don’t think that’s a small reason :].

More than anything, I think this was a way to keep him as defensive coordinator for the next couple of years.

And in that regard, mission accomplished.

That exists before he takes the HC job – at which point he may be difficult to dislodge – but until then I suspect that his contractual “rights” to the head coaching jobs are subject to an out clause for UT such that we wouldn’t be “stuck” with him should the tide turn.

What about Major?

This would be perfect for Major to take over after Greg Davis retires as well!!!

I don’t think anybody saw this coming. I personally think it is a little premature even though Muschamp is a great defensive coach, it seems way too premature in my opinion. I don’t disagree with the decision, though, but we and the rest of the Big 12 are in serious trouble. You guys could potentially set up a dynasty that sport has not seen in a long time.

Lack of experience with Muschamp no problem

Lets not act like Muschamp will be our head coach next year. It won’t be for a loooong time. In the mean time, Mack will provide him with plenty of experience (even hands on) at coaching and recruiting. For the next few years while Mack is coaching, Will will be groomed into the position. He’ll learn all the intricate details he needs to know.

Fantastic move, and fantastic timing.

over being a Longhorn fan has been steadily swelling ever since Mack took over. The whole athletic dept. has blossomed to such incredible heights during this time. Today, I am simply in awe over the prospects for the future. This house is in ORDER. This could be the beginning of a run the likes of which have never been seen. I’m absolutely giddy.

We can't ask anything more...

I luv MB… no one can argue what he has done for Texas especially, I admire his nurturing skills on his players. But I welcome this fresh change for this program. It’s time for us to have an aggressive HC. Forget Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Bob Stoops. Muschamp is the most aggressive creature on the sideline I have ever seen. All he just says one word “BOOM”, Meyers/Miles/Stoops will fall down on the floor. No contest.

Defense win games. Look what New York Giant did last year. We have the defensive beast = Muschamp + the offensive genius = Applewhite. What can we ask for more?

I can’t imagine what will be our recruiting rating looks like when the next season comes. But I know our program will have long prosper years to come!

To celebrate this great news, I would appreciate it if someone can complie all of the high jumps that Muschamp has made on the sideline and post it on youtube. Many Thanks.

This is the best news I could’ve heard today about Texas football. Oh and timing… yeah it’s all about timing. People will talk about this all week as the OU vs. Tech thing warms up. We will be in the news this week a good bit and in people’s heads too (Harris and USA Today voters).

This could be the start of a seriously dominant run for us for quite sometime… I hope the Major is viewing this as good, because I think it is for him too. I have seen him and Muschamp high-fiving on the sidelines, and I suspect this will be good for them BOTH.

Knowing he’ll never be head coach, does he jump to another program to be a D.C. and then H.C.? He’s a great position coach, and I just wonder what this does to him..

Too many team saw him fail as our DC last year....

I don’t see him getting tons of offers as a DC or HC… especially not at an elite program.

I think we want him here. We've got a good crop...and he knows it.

At the least, he can prove that he is one of the very best at his specialty and repair any damage done to his general reputation.

not every coach wants promotion...some are just happy with what they have and how much they can handle

was sent last December and received positively by Akina — he opted to stay and be part of the team in whatever role Mack offered. Good for him. His best shot at being a HC is being part of a consistent Top 10 powerhouse.

ahhhh.....

The more this sets in, the better it feels. This whole season I’ve thought about Muschamp much like I did with K. Durant: “He’s amazing, but don’t get too attached. Just savor the 1-2 years he’s a Horn.”

Now, the aggressive swagger and high flying attitude that he brought to the defense this year is the new identity of Texas Football…..for years to come! I’m just randomly punching and headbutting different objects around my apartment. Christmas came early this year.

Short-term benefits, low long-term risks

As fascinated as I am at the prospect of Muschamp as our HC in the future, the big benefit for now is that he’s staying as our DC. In other words, those people worried that he’d leave after this year no longer have to, and we get to see Muschamp further develop this very talented and young defense.

Mack is not going anywhere anytime soon, and nobody wants him to retire too early. Thus, Muschamp gets the great opportunity to observe one of the best coaches in the country do his job to complement his already impressive X’s and O’s skills. If for whatever reason Muschamp turns out not to be the right guy (I have a feeling that he is, but just if), then we can cut ties without too many losses.

the timing is great, IMHO. If anybody was concerned that we might get a little overlooked in this weekend’s shuffle since we don’t play until Thursday night, I think DD just made damn sure everybody in the media will be talkin’ about Texas all the way until next Sunday’s BCS announcement.

This may have quelled some indecision about Muschamp's duration for some recruits.

Definitely a trump card in the recruiting wars. If Tech should make it all the way, this is about fighting for share in the Texas crop.

Give Tech faster receivers, a bigger, faster back and a comparable QB, make the D faster and more athletic and they’re, you know, a handful. Not immediately, but soon.

These are stakes in this particular configuration which seems to be occurring now…or in the immediate future. This implies Texas can lay another card on the table next Thursday and seal the deal. And if OU loses, particularly if they lose by a lot, they could be the one to lose a share.

…used to be a hallmark of Texas football. Thank God we’ve wrapped up a guy who will re-instill defensive intensity for years to come. I couldn’t be happier with the direction of this program, now!

GD will be put out to pasture when Mack turns the reigns over to Boom. Major needs OC experience with a quality program. What better program than Texas? He’ll be able to write his own ticket after a few seasons of success with the top program in the nation.
