Longhorns Open Maui Invitational with St. Joe's

After two easy home victories to start the season, the competition stiffens as the Longhorns head to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational. A tournament title will not be easy for the No. 7 Longhorns as No. 1 North Carolina and No. 9 Notre Dame have also made their way to the islands. Texas will take on St. Joseph's in the first round on Monday (2 pm tip on ESPN2) with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Notre Dame and Indiana on Tuesday. Should Texas win their first two games, the championship game would take place on Wednesday. Yep, three games in three days for the ‘Horns on this working vacation.

Texas has played in the Maui Invitational two times before. In 1993, Texas dropped their first game but won their next two to take fifth place, and in 2004, Texas also went 2-1 to snag third place. All teams are guaranteed three games and all games will be nationally broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. So, for those of you may have missed the Longhorns first two wins over Stetson and Tulane, you'll get a chance to see Texas this week.

Details on St. Joe's and what to watch for in Maui after the jump...

Star-divide

St. Joe's

The Hawks enter the Invitational at 1-1 with a home win over Rider and an overtime road loss to Holy Cross. Last season, St. Joe's finished fourth in the Atlantic-10 conference (9-7) and was on the NCAA bubble before making a run to the conference tournament finals only to fall to Temple. Phil Martelli's club grabbed an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost to Oklahoma in the first round. A return trip to the NCAAs looks to be an uphill battle after losing double digit scorers Pat Calathes (17.5 ppg) and forward Rob Ferguson (11.9 ppg).

The star of this year's club is 6-9 senior forward Ahmad Nivens. Nivens is a load at 235 lbs, has already claimed two double-doubles this season, and was named co-conference player of the week after his 25 point and 13 rebound performance against Rider. He has also led the A-10 in field goal percentage in each of the last two seasons and is shooting an astounding 83% from the floor.

The other two Hawks averaging double figures in scoring are backcourt mates 6-3 senior Tasheed Carr (12.0 ppg) and 6-1 junior Darrin Govens (16.0 ppg).

Ken Pomeroy Statistics

It is certainly early but a look at Ken Pomeroy's statistics for St. Joe's is valuable nonetheless. Through two games, Pomeroy's tempo adjusted statistics reveal a below average team on both ends of the floor. On offense, St. Joe's is struggling to shoot the ball, especially from behind the three-point arc and also having trouble with turnovers. On the other end, St. Joe's has been even worse. Despite holding opponents to a low field goal percentage, St. Joe's is giving up offensive rebounds on 43% of missed shots. This is one of the worst rates in the county and the principle reason the Hawks are near the bottom of the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency. For those of you new to Pomeroy's statistics and language, adjusted defensive efficiency basically evens out tempo and number of possessions to determine the strength of a defense.

Things to Watch

  1. Can Texas continue to create turnovers against stronger competition? As impressive as the Texas defense was in the first two games, Rick Barnes and Texas fans will know a lot more about this Texas team after the next three games. Through two games, the Longhorns have created turnovers on 31% of their opponents' possessions. If that keeps up, Texas will have a great chance to win the Maui Invitational.
  1. Can Damion James make jump shots? We've heard that James spent a great deal of time in the gym shooting jumpers over Kevin Durant this summer. To be an elite player, a conference player of the year candidate, and a potential lottery pick, James must prove that he can make mid and long range jumpers both off the bounce and on the catch. DaMo has a tendency to unnecessarily fade away and consequently be off balance with his jumper. As long as James goes straight up and down, he will be fine.
  1. Will Texas knock down free throws in tight games? As a team, Texas is shooting just 51% from the line. That is disgraceful. Barnes could teach a 12 year old girl to shoot 60%. There is no excuse for this, and unless it improves, free throw shooting will cost the Longhorns games this season.
  1. How does Barnes manage his depth? Other than the Big XII tournament, Hawaii will be the only time all season that Texas is forced to play three games in three days. Thankfully, this team is a legit nine deep before we even get to Matt Hill or Alexis Wangmene. Dogus Balbay was suspended for the first game and Varez Ward sat out the second game with an injured ankle. It will be interesting to see how Barnes plays and rotates his guards with all four now eligible and healthy. Also, the Maui Invitational is played in a tiny non-air conditioned gym which holds about 2,400 people. Players routinely suffer from cramps from heat and lack of fluids. If managed properly, the Texas depth could big advantage in Maui.

This will be a fun three days for the players and for the fans. I can't wait to see Rick in a burnt orange, flowery Hawaiian shirt instead of his normal neck-grabbing button ups. Check out Justin Mason's postcard from Maui and some awkward interviews by Matt Hill for a better feel for Maui.

nice...

this is going to be a burnt orange Thanksgiving. I can’t wait!

I thought that James improve greatly shooting the ball last year

Early in the season, I wasn’t buying his range out to the three-point line, but he showed that he can hit that shot. The bigger questions for James might be his ability to handle the ball and take defenders off the dribble from the wing. That and being able to hit somewhere north of 60% on his free throws.

Building on that point, I think this just might be a poor free throw shooting team, like it was last year save Augustin and Abrams. I really hope they improve, but I don’t see it happening.

improved greatly that is
FT %

I’m not going to make a big deal out of it now. Still a relatively small sample size. Hell, if Varez Ward made his 6 FTs in the Stetson game, our team FT% would be over 70%.

Will there be a thread for the game today?
At work

It doesn’t look like I’ll be able to find a tv for the game. I’ll watch tonight when I get home.

Let’s make this the thread if people want to comment on the game.

360.com if you have verizon or at@t isp.

just in case you didn’t know..(i’m assuming you did)

Anyone got a ...

streaming link for this game?

If only my bosses knew how much money they’ve paid me to watch Longhorn sports… :)

here's a link

http://linksador.net/showtime/index.php?params=game/472/ESPN-2/

but terrible resolution…

not getting anything

post that link again.

try this...

click on the “Sports Channel” link, then “ESPN 2” channel… should work.

Thanks

Dark but better than nothing.

Balbay first assist!

Pass to AJ for a jumper

5 minutes gone

Horns up 15-4

why does it seem like we give up a ton of

offensive rebounds?

still having problems feeding our big men
Chappy misses monster dunk

Very funny

chapman misses the easy dunk...nice pass by abrams though
Texas hasn't scored in 4 minutes :(
defense is great, but lots of turnovers and offense seems to have problems
Balbay

Huge block!

sloppy play thus far
7:34 left

Horns up 20-10
The look like a team that just flew to Hawaii and is playing the early game. Out of synch!

AJ has not run the point

Mason and Balbay carrying the load.

where is mason

foul trouble??

rough start + Balbay is playing great defense and AJ is on fire
without abrams

our offense is horrendous. Hopefully this is due to the woes of an early start. James taking a lot of bad first touch shots, and seems like the big guys are missing a ton of shots down low.

also, did anyone else see that greg oden commercial? Incredible – “i’m a chameleon”

Oden commercial

Wonderful!
Varez Ward makes both FTs

Greg Oden...

…is not believable as a human being.

also he looks like Lebron James’ dad.

or grandpa

but he’s still funny as hell

great save of a rebound by james
Gary Johnson

He may get 57 rebounds by the time this game is over

One thing I love so far

The hustle of everyone on the floor. They all attack the boards and everyone moves well, even dexy. I suppose the downside of playing fast is they are taking so many bad quick shots – but you have to think that kind of hustle is going to pay off throughout the season

what the hell...awesome
first TO taken by either coach
Sloppy First half

James seemed to be off.

Halftime

Texas up 37-28

3 observations

1. The offense was offensive
2. There seems to be a glaring Augustine shaped hole in ths teams execution
3. Does the chick in the Sonic commercials seem to get hotter in each new commercial?

Nice pass into post, Dex passes to James for nice dunk

Nice opening of 2nd half

james must drive the ball more...

such a better result

Atchley getting chewed for taking quick 3
"How 'bout the bodies on these guys?"

calm down, announcers…

St. Jo making a little run, 48-37. nt
Atch's long deuce stopped the run. nt
Ivory Towers are in

Chap + Atch

Balbay still hasn't played this half
I'm at work, can't watch

checking the box score real fast…

Wangmene is back! Why haven’t Mason or Dogus even taken a shot yet? Our FT shooting is a little better.

James is struggling from the field, 4-13 now
Saw him try a jump-stop, first time I can remember him doing that. nt
He was taking terrible shots
I think Mason had 2 fould in the first half

So he sat the bench

Dogus has played ok, no shots taken tho

Damion has missed a few shots that should have gone down.

AJ beautiful!!!!!!
A 4 on 3 that became a one on three, although the others followed up for RB.

But good drive.

Johnson and Pittman tied for rebounding lead with 6

pretty good considering neither contributed a lot last year.

No Hawaiian shirt for Rick

Disappointing

Me, too. Wondered if he was color blind. Blah outfit. nt
Midway through 2nd half

St. Joes doesn’t even have 10 2nd half points yet

Defense is fine, but offense will take some time to find itself. nt
Balbay must be hurt

Varez Ward getting most of the PT

Rock Solid D

I am only able to watch off and on through a grainy internet feed but the stats and the score indicate the same solid D we saw in the first two games.

D is good

Fouls early, but it’s evident we are faster and stronger across the board

Johnson has scored our last 4 pts

Yahoo boxscore says 58-37

hahaha

Barnes doing a completely straight-faced interview with that lei around his neck seemed very strange.

Must have been running and hot; may have been at shooting event with kids. Did look weird. nt
Wingman makes 16 foot jumper!?
Gary Johnson isn't shy about shooting this year.

That will be a good thing in the long run.

Agree, plus he's jumping out of the gym
Great springs. Just going straight up for jumper after RB. nt
Balbay is back

says he just missed a three

Ward and Balbay running back court. nt
There's gonna be about 40 TOs in this game altogether. nt
Varez Ward getting earful
Freshmen had red ears all season. It's a Rick trademark. nt
ouch

St Joes is 2-16 from deep

Some of the weirdest angles on balls coming off the basket.

Of course, some of the Horns’ shots aren’t so pretty angles in the first place.

Rare to see a ball hit directly above rim and bounce straight down.
Hawk interview is a riot
mascot interview?
yeah, it was really funny
the commentators...

have been talking about the hawk for 2 1/ minutes.

yay james hit both of his FTs
Up 22. Got go. Y'all take care of them. nt
Johnson scores + foul

14 and 7 is not a bad day at the office.

I shouldn't say that

since Gary isn’t getting paid for this

14-19 from the foul line (73.7%)

much improved.

AJ just showed why he is not the PG
St. Josephs ends the game with 4-23 from three

I’m guessing our perimeter defense had something to do with that, but wow… that is terrible, and yet they kept shooting them.

a littel foggy...

Texas looked like an early season team that had had just flown to Hawaii. That timezone ( 5 hours) takes a toll on the sleep schedule. We need to find a PG. Damion and Abrams do not need to be dribbling the ball down the court. I would really like to see the Horns play Carolina….

The good, the bad, and the ugly

The defense was unbelievable. If this is what we have three games into the season, this could become a monster by conference. AJ had another great game of both sides of the ball. We don’t seem to be getting any shots off his possessions at point, but he is not hogging shots or turning it over. I was also again impressed by the play of Wangmene and want to see him get more minutes.

I have never seen James play so poorly. He made countless stupid mistakes. Bad shots. Bad passes. Bad positioning. Let’s just hope this was due to jet lag, because he was not player we know today.

Several players managed to play well with little to show for it — Balbay, Chapman, and Mason. They played great D and got good shots, but just did not hit. When Chapman finally ‘clicks’ he’s going to be very good. Our inside offense was disappointing.

I would put Mason in the category with James.

Very poor game

james

Barnes is asking James to do too much. They need to let him play 10 ft and in around the rim. No more 3’s until he can get his inside game going.

Congrats to Barnes, win #250 at UT

He’s a defensive minded coach, so he’s got to love what he’s seeing from the team defensively. Now if only we can cut down the turnovers and be more efficient on offense.

AJ said postgame that they were going 100 mph on offense and need to slow it down to 70-75 and read the defense. With Augustin gone, this offense with new PGs will be a project, but I expect it to be solid enough to make a healthy run in March.

I hope we beat Notre Dame, because I really want to see what this defense can do against a great team early. We can set the bar then on how good this team is. Psycho T is back, so there’s no excuses if UNC can’t win that game.

Also

big props to our big guys, namely Johnson, Pittman, and Wangmene (1st game back)

They combined for 22 points and 21 rebounds. If they can give us that kind of production consistently, we will be very hard to stop once James and all our guards get into sync.

I didn’t even mention Connor, Hill, and Chapman. 3 more bigs to go with that? We are LOADED in the front court.
