Congratulations to Kansas for an exciting come-from-behind win to take down Memphis. Three questions to conclude the night:
- Sorta funny, isn't it, that Memphis lost because of the one weakness (free throw shooting) the mainstream press was focused on but which they seemed to have overcome in their five previous tournament games?
- Has any team won a national title with a coach dressed in an uglier tie than that which Bill Self donned tonight?
- If you're Bill Self and you've delivered what you were brought to Kansas to deliver... do you take the wheelbarrow of T Boone gold and go to your alma mater?

What a crazy game...
... even though the ending was really dull for an OT NC game.
1.) Where was this free throw failure against us? Memphis made more FTs than they beat us by. All I'm saying is it could have helped.
2.) Who cares about his tie? He gets to be a genius for the whole offseason even if he wore a sweatervest on top of a sweatshirt. Hopefully the whole team goes pro and we have a shot in next year's XII title game.
3.) Dick Rod says take the money, but he also says F your alma mater. I say get the hell out of the Big XII.
All I can think about is that we beat the National Champions, but we couldn't even stay on the court with Memphis. I wanted the rubber game! Damn!

great game!
I had a blast watching it, Congats to kansas

Self's tie
It might be ugly, but I bet you it's his very favorite one now.
Bdub - April 8, 2008
Self to Okie St would be bad for us
If he goes to Stillwater, he'd compete for a lot of Texas kids that we're getting right now without a whole lot of competition. If we're not getting the best in Texas, then we're in trouble, because Barnes & Co. have shown no ability to recruit premium talent outside the state (with the notable -- and lone -- exception of #35).
Self staying at Kansas is much better for the long-term health of Longhorn hoops.
JudenSmithFan - April 8, 2008
OOS players
The majority of his players have been from Texas, but Barnes has recruited plenty of OOS players besides Durant. PJ Tucker, Royal Ivey, Brandon Mouton and Mike Williams were all OOS players. Heck a third of this years team was from OOS (Augustin, Chapman, Hill and Wangmene). As for Self, I can't imagine that he would go to Stillwater, but stranger things have happened. It would be akin to a football coach leaving Alabama for a&M.
SaintBevo - April 8, 2008
yea not sure what you're talking about
Almost all of our studs have been from out of state, as was mentioned below.
Michael Bean - April 8, 2008
If Memphis managed to hang on...
do you think Self would've stayed at KU? Hypothetically if went went to OSU regardless of the outcome, that would probably signal Chalmers, Arthur, and Rush to all go pro in addition to the seniors, Jackson, Kaun, and Robinson.
Thankfully for the KU fans, they at least have this NC to be happy about if their program takes a turn to "rebuilding mode" in the offseason. If they didn't win this game and Self still left, they'd probably hate him like Roy Williams.
I do see that they have three solid recruits coming in next year in Morris, Thomas, and Releford (but they could transfer if Self leaves).
Self is a great recruiter, so he will make OSU a power again. Good for the Big 12, bad for us.
goingforthecorner - April 8, 2008
I guess I am the minority
I liked Self's tie. At least he doesn't dress like Bruce Pearl.
And while I can't understand why anyone would leave Lawrence for Stillwater, I think it would be good all around. I've posted before that I'd like to see a reinvigorated OSU. It makes for a fun rivalry, gives us another team to challenge Kansas, another team to wipe out o.u. and the Ags, and strengthens the conference.
As for recruiting, I noticed that of the 10 starters introduced last night, none was from Kansas, none (maybe one) from Tennessee. This is a national sport. I don't see the difference whether Self is recruiting out of Lawrence or out of Stillwater.
NYCHorn - April 8, 2008
That's right
Self is already recruiting Texas - successfully.
One more question: Will Mario Chalmers ever have to purchase food in the state of Kansas again?
beast in bama - April 8, 2008
Chalmers
When I saw him taking that shot at the end of regulation, I knew he was going to make it. That guy is CLUTCH. I was horrified to learn he is only a jr.
SaintBevo - April 8, 2008
Fill up the pool
or buy a drink
Xerxes - April 8, 2008
Chalmers
...the kid could even go to Kona Grill after hours and still get service (if Lawrence had one). And that locaion would understandably deny any future altercations involving #15 ever occured.
Lincoln - April 8, 2008
Why would he stay?
Obviously the money is huge, but that's not all it is. Now that he's delivered, KU fans will just expect it again and again. I'm not saying that its wrong to expect national championships, but that is a hell of a lot of pressure for a coach that is going to have to be rebuilding for at least the next year. If it were me, OU lite here I come!
PSUhorn - April 8, 2008
if he leaves
it's just more of the arms race that is collegiate sports.
it matters. at some point, it will implode.
cornnation @ Burnt Orange Nation - April 8, 2008
I disagree...to a degree
Yes, it's a lot of money. But the fact that it's Self's (and his wife's) alma mater and near his hometown and family changes the situation a little bit. If it was Kentucky throwing those numbers at him, then I'd agree. Going home is a little different.
TB - April 8, 2008
He can be the Dean Smith of KU, the Coack K of KU
now. He can be the crazy old coach who wins so many games and brought the team a title (or two?) and gets to permanently burn his stamp on the program.
He can reach a level at KU where he is so beloved that he can hire his not quite ready or qualified son to succeed him and nobody would complain until after he was dead or senile.
Face it, Bill Self is KU basketball now, and he will embrace that. I say he stays for a long, long time...
He can finally say, Roy Who?
the1austin - April 8, 2008
Stay at KU
He'll always be remembered as the guy who brought the title back to Lawrence in fine fashion. He's a king in Kansas. Expectations will be enormous in Stillwater and if he doesn't win then he'll get blazed as a guy who bolted for money. Forget about his alma mater. It's a step down. Period.
It would be like Darrel Royal bolting Austin for his alma mater in Norman after 1969 title, and then not winning up there

re: spelling
I don't mean to pick on you, but this the second time somebody has spelled DKR wrong today...it's Darrell..i know it's nitpicking, but it's not that hard

No worries
I didn't read half the posts in here today
Maybe I'm just thinking about his other brother Darrel

It is always about the money
Caradoc - April 8, 2008
Except when it's all about sex.
Now with money, sex and basketball out of the way, can we talk some football?
If Pickens is throwing that kind of money around for basketball, when's he going to get serious about OSU football? Prognosis is not too good for 40-year-old millionaires.
whills - April 8, 2008
Stadium
Didn't he just give $100 million for the stadium? Maybe he will wait for the project to be completed before he brings in the new coach. Supposedly, he's also building a major athlete complex for housing and training his teams.
Caradoc - April 9, 2008
I heard on the radio
That T Boones big balls donation was $165 million (he has been a consummate donater even before this, to all areas of the school, not just athletics).
That sum was in the OSU coffers all of 10 hours, where it was then moved to a hedge fund managed completely by one, T Boone Pickens.
That fund is now reportedly worth over 300 million.
According to Houston Radio that is. Speaking of, almost time for Rome!

BoddickerIsClutch - April 9, 2008
Eddie Sutton....
....took OU-Lite to a couple of Final-4 appearances. There is absolutely no reason Bill Self can't duplicate the same results.
I'm no fan of T.BoonePickens, but if he hangs a $6million signing bonus in front of Bill Self, then I can surely understand why Self would show an interest. Kansas can hardly complain. Bill Self delivered the Nat'l Championship Roy Williams never could bring home.
