We're 74 picks into the MLB draft, and no Longhorns or (to our knowledge) Longhorn prospects have been picked. We'll try to update this thread once the first day is complete if any Horns have been picked, but considering the fact that we're expecting big things from next year's squad, a few good breaks for us fans on draft day wouldn't be a bad thing.
[Note by 40AS, 06/05/08 10:56 PM CDT ] Kyle Russell was drafted #93 by the Dodgers. We can't think of any way that Russell returns to campus, and his statement to the press pretty much confirms it. Russell said "I'm very thankful for the coaches, teammates and fans for the support they've given me. Without them, I wouldn't be where I'm at today. Coming to UT was one of the greatest experiences and it's something I'll always come back to. Hopefully I touched the hearts of a lot of people and I thank them for everything. I'm looking forward to what the future holds." No other Longhorn (to our knowledge) was drafted on day one, expect several to be drafted on day two.

Kyle Russell went 93rd to the Dodgers
Halfway through the third round; about 50 picks higher than where he went last year

Considering...
He had two years of eligibility left, hard to say he made a bad choice by coming back to school.

I'm guessing he's gone this year?
I didn’t even know he had another year of eligibility left.

Yes, he has one more year left
But I’d say there’s about a 99% chance that he’s gone. Even if he doesn’t sign a contract by August 15, I don’t think he’s coming back to Texas. Playing a third year helped, but it won’t do him any good to beat up on college pitching anymore. Scouts know he can swing a metal bat. If he played indie ball for a year and did well, he could better his chances next year. And again, that’s assuming he doesn’t go ahead and sign with the Dodgers now.

Robbie Grossman 174th to the Pirates
2nd pick of the 6th round; can’t believe he went before Danks

Good news for us
Grossman was projected as a possible late first-round pick, so the fact that he fell so far definitely increases the chances that he’ll actually show up on campus.

I would love to get Grossman on campus
He’s a a guy who might bring the “it” factor back to this team. Nice group of pitchers in this recruiting class also.

Speaking of the pitching staff...
What ever happened to the Street twins? Jordon left the team last year, and I don’t recall Juston pitching much (if at all) the past two years. I know neither of the boys had the talent that Huston has, but wasn’t Jordon at least expected to be a key relief pitcher for us this year?

Grossman officially on board
Robbie Grossman has apparently told the Texas coaches that he has decided not to negotiate a contract with the Pirates and will be a Longhorn. Great news for the Horns.

Danks went 210 to the White Sox
8th pick of the 7th round; ironically the same team that drafted him out of high school; guess the White Sox love them some Danks brothers

Big Bird
Pick #372 (Round 12) to Seattle. His is an interesting situation, seems to make sense for him to take the money and run considering his injury history.

Kyle Walker went in the 11th round
to the Rockies.
Taylor Jungmann is still on the board, so it’s looking more and more like the Horns will get all of their recruits on campus and keep a few of the juniors around as well.

Casey Whitmer went in the 30th round
to the Nationals.
This kid needs some more work, but I hear he never really meshed with the coaching staff and did not pitch at all over the last month of the season, so he may be looking for an escape.

Jungmann went in the 24th round
to the Angels.
Mentioned it in FanPosts but forget to include it here. It’s a good team to get drafted by because they can write a big check, but I don’t think they’re banking on the arm of a 24th round high school pick, so I expect to see him in Austin.
