When Will They Retire #10?

As broken (not really) by BON earlier last week, the athletic department announced plans last week to retire Vince Young's 30-2-record-as-a-starter #10 jersey. If you're like us and no longer live in Austin, attending VY's jersey retirement ceremony game should be a priority. There hasn't yet been (to our knowledge) an announcement of when #10 will be retired, but looking at the available dates allows us to speculate on the obvious answer. This is just speculation, but it's the freaking offseason so what else are we gonna do?

Looking at the schedule, the Longhorns have 7 home games to retire VY's jersey (produced below). During those dates, the Titans play on either the following or the same day as the Longhorns on all but one occasion. The only exception is the home opener against Florida Atlantic.

  • 8/30  Texas vs. Florida Atlantic -- 8/28 Titans @ Green Bay
  • 9/13  Texas vs. Arkansas -- 9/14 Titans @ Cincinatti
  • 9/20   Texas vs. Rice -- 9/21 Titans vs. Houston (in Nashville)
  • 10/18 Texas vs. Mizzou -- 10/19 Titans @ Kansas City
  • 10/25 Texas vs. Okie State -- 10/26 Titans vs. Indy
  • 11/8   Texas vs. Baylor -- 11/9 Titans @ Chicago
  • 11/27 Texas vs. Aggy -- 11/27 Titans @ Detroit
We all know that UT's athletic department doesn't always do the logical thing, but logic suggests that VY's jersey will be retired on August 30th against Florida Atlantic. Again, it's all just speculation for now, but are there any other thoughts on this?

8/30 Texas vs. Florida Atlantic—8/28 Titans @ Green Bary

That Bary guy probably has green hair, too, I’ll bet ;-)

What about during the Red River Shootout?

I know its technically a home game for the Sooners this year, but they have a bye week of the Red River Rivalry and it is a neutral site game. I highly doubt OU would approve this and there is no way that Mack and DeLoss would even fathom approaching OU, the Cotton Bowl about doing it, but man would it be awesome.

OU game

That would be awesome, but doesn’t seem likely.

ya

can you say crazy stadium

None of the above

Since many of the numbers being retired belong to players of other sports, a football game would not be an appropriate venue.

Huh...?

I believe DD has already announced that there will be number retirement celebrations throughout the SEASONS…football jerseys to be retired during football season, basketball jerseys to be retired during hoops season, etc. That being the case, the three football jerseys to be retired WILL be retired this football season, and in DKRMS. My heart says Okie State, which would be a just reward considering some of this greatest come-backs were against the Pokes. My head, though, says FAU due to the NFL schedule.

OK then

If it’s only football, then I see no problem. Which game is homecoming?

No real homecoming per se.

The Missouri game will feature the Texas Exes Distinguished Alumni Awards, The Cowboys Reunion and the Football Parents’ Weekend. That’s Oct. 18 and most likely will be nationally telecast; game time has not been set, which is usual when it’s set up for national broadcast. VY would play the next day at KC in a noon game, so that doesn’t seem workable.

The other is the Baylor game Nov. 8 which will feature Longhorn Hall of Honor, Letterwinners Rounup and Veterans Recognition Day. Chances of a local broadcast are even remote.

Actually, I think the Athletic Council is the organization retiring the jerseys, so there may be some flexibility there. But there seems to be no really good time except for the first game.

Even if there was only one retirement ceremony

Why wouldn’t a Football game be the best venue?

Where else do you assemble 80,000+ UT fans for an audience?

They’ve recognized other sports’ athletes at football games before if I remember correctly…

Whichever it is

I just hope it turns out better than the game VY came back for last year (KSU).

INDY game is actually on 10/27 (on MNF)

Just pointing it out – since it does provide an extra day and a half or so from our OK State game for VY to work out travel and schedule logistics.

Good catch

Although it still seems doubtful that an extra day would be the difference.

It would be nice to do it against the Pokes

Since VY anchored 2 ridiculous comebacks against them and had his infamous “pump juke” en route to that 80 yard TD run in the2005 game.

Let's do more

I think DD should target goal of retiring 2 numbers every football season, we have enough deserving greats. This should get us caught up after a while.

good idea

and soon, once we run low on jersey numbers, in addition to 54b, we can have a 54c and a 54d and a 54e….

hell, let’s just make the numbers like license plates, that way EVERYONE can have his number retired. F73 XSV sure would look good on a banner in DKR.

yeah..

bad idea

FAU week..

they’d have to do it durign the FAU game. I can’t imagine them retiring VY’s number without VY himself present.

He’ll probably come out and do the coin toss as well.

They need to do it at a Nationally Televised game

It doesn’t hurt recruiting to have the highlights of the retirement ceremony televised live, and highlights re-run all night on SportsCenter and Gameday.

Good point

But the problem is that network coverage almost never extends to halftime, pregame, or postgame. They’ve already got everything scheduled. You might pick up 15 seconds on the halftime show, but that’s it.

I think it would be best to hold the ceremony at the Holiday Bowl (or wherever we end up). In those games, they usually do provide good blocks of time for halftime.

but then

Wouldn’t half the crowd be cheering and the other half booing?

Only if we somehow got A&M or Tech in a bowl game

Most other fans would be decent at a bowl game. I can’t imagine them not doing it at DKR though. The only other stadium where it could logically happen is VY’s old stomping ground: The Rose Bowl.

have you ever seen someone have their number retired by a school at a neutral-site game?

I don’t see the logic in that.

Bowl tend to honor players who make that respective bowl’s Hall of Fame, not retire numbers for a school.

How about this

What if we went to the Alamo bowl or the Cottonbowl? You could probably get a lot of UT fans there.

But as I said, you won’t get much national media coverage at a regular season game. They have other things to talk about.

Aggie game seems like the best choice...

Tom Hicks can get VY on his plane from Detroit to Austin by 3:30 pm CST Thanksgiving Day… The Titans vs. Lions game starts over 7 hours before the kickoff of the Aggie game, and around 9 hours before halftime. This or OU are the only legitimate options. Remember, when VY fumbled prior to halftime in 2004, only to come out and dominate after halftime…
