But don’t you want your only loss to look even better with a Tech win? And honestly I don’t mind seeing the Big XII season being validated by a couple of wins over the SEC.
I don't know that it makes that much difference now...
that UT already has their bowl set and everything, and people’s perceptions of how good the team is are going to be affected more by how they play than how other Big 12 teams play. And Tech is just so unlikeable for me. Harrell is such a douche and crybaby, and Leach is such a moronic tool. I just can’t like them. They bug me.
…I think the media takes into account strength of conferences in bowl games, and it has sway on where teams start in the preseason rankings. In a year where you may have multiple undefeateds that is the sort of thing that can make a difference in the CG or not. I’m fine w/ TT winning the Cotton Bowl if it makes the media think the Big 12 and influences where the Horns start in ‘09. Do you think there will be a Big 10 team in the Top 10 to start next year? Hell no. Maybe I’m reading too much into it though.
I think there is some truth to that, and it does affect voting for next year. But I also think that performance in the bowl game influences perception as well. I mean, look at all the idiots talking now about how USC is the the real best team of the year. I heard people saying the same thing about Penn St. a month ago, and about UT. If UT blows OSU out, there may be some talking heads talking about how UT should be ranked first. So I think that a team’s most recent performance affects perceptions more than other factors.
Doesn’t matter. No matter what happens, the media will still make a much bigger deal and lend much more credibility to the SEC. It’s groupthink at its worst.
FWIW, that was said by the Texas Rangers’ broadcaster, Josh Lewin, when one of the umpires was having a horrible night calling balls and strikes… haha.
Reminded me when Leach went for it on fourth down instead of kicking FG against OU when the score was 14-0. Leach makes gambles his team can’t afford to lose.
Leach doesn’t not have good judgment and overall game sense. Really stupid calls.
That was one of the dumbest playcalls I've ever seen
I wonder if a Tech fan would venture to defend that call. First of all, you need to punt that. Secondly, that’s a horrible playcall. Just pure stupidity.
Texas Tech dodged a bullet, avoiding points on that punt return. Then Leach gives the ball right back with good field position and momentum. Brilliant, isn’t he?
Being how they beat Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and two other bowl teams in Memphis and Tulsa this year, you could probably come up with a team much less deserving of a bowl than ECU. They also won C-USA, for what it’s worth….

that texas full out laid an egg until about half way through the 3rd quarter that night. Texas’ performance had much more to do with the loss in Lubbock than anything the red raiders did that night…
But Leach should have taken him out after the terrible 4th and 4 QB sneak play. I thought Harrell deserved to be in NY for the Heisman ceremony, but I think that he has absolutely destroyed any argument that he had that he was slighted. This is the worst game I have ever seen him play. If his hand is still messed up, that’s understandable, but he is just awful today.
And right as I posted that, he finally got his sh&% together and leads a touchdown drive....
Good for him, if he can rally this team, it would be a nice way to go out after a highly successful career. Before that drive, though, the guy looked like a true freshman in his first game.
Yeah, Harrell looks like a deer in the headlights today. Absolutely terrible final game for this guy. But at least he took some shots at the Heisman folks after he was “snubbed.”
yes. A loss lessens the chance they get more Crabtrees. Leach will get his share of fast, short, weaker receivers that aren’t recruited by the bigger schools (and some will continue to drive us crazy, see Welker). It’s having a couple of fast, tall, strong ones like Crabtree that make his system and similar spreads much more dangerous.
His quirky playcalling is just doing them in. Playaction deep in your own endzone when you know Ole Miss is just bringing the heat on Harrell? Dumb dumb dumb.
But in his defense, when he came up from that fake handoff, he had guys on him immediately. He didn’t have a whole lot of places to go. Calling something that takes more time to develop at that point was just not very smart from Leach.
Absolutely unbelievable. No wonder he didn’t get the UCLA, Miami, Washington, Clemson, or Auburn jobs even after showing interest in all of them.
I have to think that this guy’s blatant job hunting the last month has hurt this team quite a bit. I mean, Ole Miss is good, but they look like the New England Patriots against Tech.
And these nagging ankle injuries aren't going to help..
The guy has been limping around all season. I think he will be a great pro, but I think you’re right, he might fall to #7-10 if he can’t get healthy for the combine. He should pull a Ted Ginn and just stop playing so that he can get healthy.
Hopefully this will wake up Texas too. How many times have we seen a team that felt “snubbed” by the BCS go to a lesser bowl and get pasted by a team they were expected to beat? We did it against Washington State. Cal did it against Texas Tech. Now, Tech can feel what its like on that end of the spectrum.
and some holding calls for Tech OFL on that faithful night, we may able to pressure Harrell just like what Ole Miss did today. If Colt didn’t score the last TD too fast on that faithful night and keep Harrell off the field a bit longer, we would be in MNC for sure.
somehow worship something in that armpit they call Lubbock, I think what you were looking for was “fateful” night. I wouldn’t have noticed if it was once, but twice caught my attention.
Who would have thought that Nebraska would be the Big 12 highlight of the bowl season so far?
If they had lost, the Big 12 would be getting hammered. Though, the conference will be talked down quite a bit thanks to this nationally televised undressing.
Nobody is going to give us too much credit because, fair or not, they’re for the Big 10. That’s why many of us wanted Alabama, even though we knew that was virtually impossible.
Compliments of Mike Leach and the world’s worst attempt at career advancement. I think this game is on Leach making the last month about whether or not he can get out of Lubbock and not preparing to play a bowl game.
I don’t recall ever seeing a team unravel the way this team did this year.
is very good. The Big XII South is great. They just aren’t in 1995 Big 8 territory (4 teams in top 9) which I think we all probably knew beforehand. No shame in that.
Shrug. Like I’ve said before, I think using bowl games to determine conference superiority is silly, but people love to do it, and they’ll undoubtedly do it here. They even did it last year even though Florida embarrassingly lost to Michigan.
I’m an SEC fan and even I don’t think the conference is clearly better this year. I think the mid-tier Big XII teams (OSU, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska) are better than the SEC’s, which after Ole Miss takes a serious plunge.
Bowl games are another piece of the puzzle. I think we’ve confirmed the Big Ten blows and the Pac-10 is better that we thought (not the best, just better than we thought).
I think the Big Ten is deservedly getting criticism, but the problem I have with using bowl games as arguing this conference is better than that conference, as a direct comparison, is that it assumes that the entire conferences just played each other. Obviously, all 12 teams of the Big 12 aren’t playing all 11 teams of the Pac-10, for instance. But as you said, it is certainly a piece of the puzzle. I’m talking to those who use it as the only factor or the deciding factor by itself.
I wouldn’t have cared about him leaving. But leaving prior to our bowl game was a real bitch move to abandon the team so I just couldn’t root for Ole Miss today. I didn’t root for Tech either though.
If we didn’t come out absolutely brain dead in the first half in Lubbock, we walk away with a comfortable victory. The poor playcalling, the dropped balls, the bad blocking… ugh, it hurts. Thinking of that first half hurts more than the infamous goofs by both Gideon and Earl Thomas in the last two plays of the game.
Is there a reason Muschamp walks on water here? Did he not feel he could have blitzed and played man? Seriously, Greg Davis must have killed Bevo or something.
But there’s no question in my mind that our offense really screwed up in the first half. After all of our flub ups, we only gave up 22 points and had forced a few Tech punts and field goals. Our defense wasn’t stellar, but they kept us in the game in the first half when Tech could have blown it wide open.
That last TD by Crabtree was Tech’s only offensive touchdown in the second half. If our freshman safety would catch the ball, it never happens. All things considered, more blame goes to the offense for that game.
Tech still posted 34 points. It’s not like when Tech plays Alabama a few years ago when ’Bama won 13-10. Then you can legitimately say that the SEC defense just stifled that offense. But yes, the SEC defense won this round, since 34 is “low” for Tech.
Leech, you creep, you got what you deserved – a smack down on the national stage. All the Red Raider fans can kiss my ass!!
Leech ranked UT #5, helping to cost us a shot at the NC and putting his buddy Stoops in the MNC in our place. Red Raider fans pretended they belonged in the NC hunt, despite their pathetic schedule (TWO Div 2 teams) and significantly lower BCS rank than UT/OU that would have taken them out of the mix in every single other BCS conference tiebreaker.
I never hated TTU before this season, just saw them as an annoyance who occasionally knocked UT off in exciting games. But their uppity behavior and coach as if they even belong in the same breath as UT in the top tier of college football has made me pull for their comeuppance in the Cotton, next season and forever more. Without Crabtree/Harrell they’ll be a shell of what they saw themselves as in 2008.
When UT wins and OU loses our beloved Longhorns will finish the season with the best record in the Big XII. And the world will know that the best team was shafted beyond all measure.
Yeah your right, I just thought Boise State because people think the MWC and WAC conferences are such jokes that they shouldn’t be entitled to a BSC game
Good thing Florida whooped up on this Bama team I don’t think I would want to see them in the big game on the 8th. I’m pretty sure Choklahoma could handle them if this is how they play
Don’t know if this strengthens a playoff argument, though it should. However, maybe a conference like the MWC will start to get a little more pub for earning an auto bid. Hell, this is the second BCS game that Utah has won, and the 2nd time it’s gone undefeated since the inception of the BCS. Still no National Title to show for it….
PB, not sure I caught switzer’s last reference – sounded like a ‘waaaa’ re Texas comments by Johnson, et al. Looked like he’d already pounded a few back at the bar. It was only fitting he had to sit next to Johnson since Barry was his bitch when Johnson coached at the “U”
Today has to be better
I would say yesterday was the worst January 1 bowl schedule we’ve ever seen.

tdwalsh - January 2, 2009
why do you think that?
I would think a player matching that description would be much more concerned with where crabtree gets drafted than how TTU fares in the cotton bowl…
andmyster - January 2, 2009
Yes
Leach voted us 5, screw him.
40AS - January 2, 2009
thought it was worse?
7 or so… with tech being #2 probably even more ridiculous
andmyster - January 2, 2009
Nah
There is absolutely no logic to explain us #5 and them #2.
40AS - January 2, 2009
I want the Big 12 to win in theory, just not OU and TT. I hate them to much to wish something like that.
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
Wow, Tech D getting shredded
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
by d i hope you mean

texfan23 - January 2, 2009
on the pick'em challenge i picked tech to win, against better judgement. i picked off of who i thought generally would win.
i should have in actuality chosen the team i liked better.
texfan23 - January 2, 2009
Great hit!
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
I think Ole Miss fumbled on purpose
so they could get the safety, take the ball, and eat up another 6 minutes.
Brilliant coaching.
afrokinger - January 2, 2009
Sweet
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
It's truly called a nut job!
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
Perfect.
Maybe they’ll fumble again just for the hell of it.
afrokinger - January 2, 2009
Leach has killed Tech
His quirky playcalling is just doing them in. Playaction deep in your own endzone when you know Ole Miss is just bringing the heat on Harrell? Dumb dumb dumb.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
Safety's on
Harrell. You have to read blitz and throw it somewhere. I’d expect him to do a better job of that.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
That might be true
But in his defense, when he came up from that fake handoff, he had guys on him immediately. He didn’t have a whole lot of places to go. Calling something that takes more time to develop at that point was just not very smart from Leach.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
The blitz
was delayed. He had some time. Apparently nobody was open. Throw it away. He held it too long.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
How do you call playaction there?
Absolutely unbelievable. No wonder he didn’t get the UCLA, Miami, Washington, Clemson, or Auburn jobs even after showing interest in all of them.
I have to think that this guy’s blatant job hunting the last month has hurt this team quite a bit. I mean, Ole Miss is good, but they look like the New England Patriots against Tech.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
At this rate Harrell goes undrafted
seth78 - January 2, 2009
With Crabs going lower than expected. He really hasnt shown anything today.
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
I think Crabtree will still go high
He’s still a monster. One mediocre day with a bad ankle shouldn’t hurt him that much, unless that ankle injury lingers for months.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
The ankle has been lingering for months.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Not to mention a good showing at the combine will make NFL scouts forget anything.
Year2 - January 2, 2009
He looked bad against Baylor before the injury. Wasn't he hurt on his first catch of the game?
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
And these nagging ankle injuries aren't going to help..
The guy has been limping around all season. I think he will be a great pro, but I think you’re right, he might fall to #7-10 if he can’t get healthy for the combine. He should pull a Ted Ginn and just stop playing so that he can get healthy.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
two injuries…the first one early in the year…the one he is fighting now happened against Baylor. He’ll be top 10…the rest? Hang em.
Tech92 - January 2, 2009
More like wrecked into Ole Miss.
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
That should do it.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
Yikes.
Hopefully this will wake up Texas too. How many times have we seen a team that felt “snubbed” by the BCS go to a lesser bowl and get pasted by a team they were expected to beat? We did it against Washington State. Cal did it against Texas Tech. Now, Tech can feel what its like on that end of the spectrum.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
oh well, if we blitz every play in Lubbock
and some holding calls for Tech OFL on that faithful night, we may able to pressure Harrell just like what Ole Miss did today. If Colt didn’t score the last TD too fast on that faithful night and keep Harrell off the field a bit longer, we would be in MNC for sure.
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
the key here is the holding calls. i was astonished that the refs called one. i really believed that they had been stricken from the rule book...
texfan23 - January 2, 2009
yah, the referee only called once against Tech today..
I bet there were a lot of holding fouls from Tech OFL going on, but somehow, OIe Miss’ D able to power thru their holding and pressured Harrell
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
well it was nice to see it if only even the one time this season.
texfan23 - January 2, 2009
Nutt said, you dont give me the holding call, fine..
I’m going to keep blitzing as long as it works
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
it's about time to call them again #94 Reed.
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
Unless you
somehow worship something in that armpit they call Lubbock, I think what you were looking for was “fateful” night. I wouldn’t have noticed if it was once, but twice caught my attention.
tdwalsh - January 2, 2009
Lending credence to the old SEC talent/defense story
I doubt OU puts a lie to it in the Championship…
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
You mean...
“championship.”
Mulliganville - January 2, 2009
Who would have thought that Nebraska would be the Big 12 highlight of the bowl season so far?
If they had lost, the Big 12 would be getting hammered. Though, the conference will be talked down quite a bit thanks to this nationally televised undressing.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Danielson is jumping up and down
yelling “See? Junk Offense! Junk Offense!”
zamm - January 2, 2009
You are exactly right.
All eyes on Texas and OU to carry the Big 12’s national reputation. What else is new?
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Ha! Tech called for holding!
the1austin - January 2, 2009
The thing is, even if we obliterate Ohio State
Nobody is going to give us too much credit because, fair or not, they’re for the Big 10. That’s why many of us wanted Alabama, even though we knew that was virtually impossible.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
But some espn anaylsts or talking heads said,
MB should runs up the scores to 60 +, BCS committee would consider Longhorns as National Co-Champions
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
No way. There will not be a split title.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
i agree. why share the title?
Either we are or we are not..
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
M E L T D O W N
Compliments of Mike Leach and the world’s worst attempt at career advancement. I think this game is on Leach making the last month about whether or not he can get out of Lubbock and not preparing to play a bowl game.
I don’t recall ever seeing a team unravel the way this team did this year.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Let's give
Ole Miss some credit here. They outplayed this team for the last 52 minutes or so and have obviously put it together at the end of the year.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
Good point, it's amazing what a team can do when they have a consistent quarterback.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Ole Miss gets tons of credit. Outplayed us. Leach also gets tons of credit. Completely distracted and uninterested in this game. What a turd.
Tech92 - January 2, 2009
that hit was almost bomaresque. totally allsum!!!!!
texfan23 - January 2, 2009
I thought they didn’t run the play clock during the PAT?
UT_BKC - January 2, 2009
The Big XII
is very good. The Big XII South is great. They just aren’t in 1995 Big 8 territory (4 teams in top 9) which I think we all probably knew beforehand. No shame in that.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
LOL
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
So does Leach sign his contract now?
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
Not going anywhere for a while? Mike Leach should get a Snickers commercial.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
SEC fans will have a feast with this
Shrug. Like I’ve said before, I think using bowl games to determine conference superiority is silly, but people love to do it, and they’ll undoubtedly do it here. They even did it last year even though Florida embarrassingly lost to Michigan.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
Did the 7-1
record in the other 8 bowl games not count?
I’m an SEC fan and even I don’t think the conference is clearly better this year. I think the mid-tier Big XII teams (OSU, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska) are better than the SEC’s, which after Ole Miss takes a serious plunge.
Bowl games are another piece of the puzzle. I think we’ve confirmed the Big Ten blows and the Pac-10 is better that we thought (not the best, just better than we thought).
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
Fair enough
I think the Big Ten is deservedly getting criticism, but the problem I have with using bowl games as arguing this conference is better than that conference, as a direct comparison, is that it assumes that the entire conferences just played each other. Obviously, all 12 teams of the Big 12 aren’t playing all 11 teams of the Pac-10, for instance. But as you said, it is certainly a piece of the puzzle. I’m talking to those who use it as the only factor or the deciding factor by itself.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
All ten teams, I mean, from the Pac-10

your right, that was a terrible call.
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
Ole Miss recovers the onside kick.
Anyone doubt that Nutt will go for the “FU” TD after that fight?
the1austin - January 2, 2009
And then go for two. nt

EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009

because losing to Mississippi was such a horrible thing? Good times.
andy_wooster - January 2, 2009
I still don't think that Ole Miss is that good.
Today, Tech couldn’t have beat anybody.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Blame Leach for calling a terrible game
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
or, brilliant Nutt job...
successful passing/running game that able to kept Harrell off the field most of the day or at least longer than we did in Lubbock..
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
but, i'm very impressed with Ole Miss' RB
GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
Much better run game than Texas, and that ain't right
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
And Snead. Good for him, he is starting to look like an NFL QB.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
Agree, good for Snead
krelldoggy - January 2, 2009
It looked like he hasnt put on any muscle since high school.
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
tremendous effort
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
What would they have to do?
Ole Miss is playing like a top 15 team right now whether anyone here cares to credit them or not.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
At least, I'm happy our former backup QB
Just stuck it to Tech.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
If Snead had transfered after our bowl game
I wouldn’t have cared about him leaving. But leaving prior to our bowl game was a real bitch move to abandon the team so I just couldn’t root for Ole Miss today. I didn’t root for Tech either though.
seth78 - January 2, 2009
I still think
Us losing at the last second on the road is a more defensible loss than Florida losing at the Swamp. But whatever; it’s a dead issue.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
So... lets talk about Lache Seastrunck! HA HA HA... any new news?
EYESOFTEJAS - January 2, 2009
It makes me shake my head
If we didn’t come out absolutely brain dead in the first half in Lubbock, we walk away with a comfortable victory. The poor playcalling, the dropped balls, the bad blocking… ugh, it hurts. Thinking of that first half hurts more than the infamous goofs by both Gideon and Earl Thomas in the last two plays of the game.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
Uh, defense didn't exactly light it up
Is there a reason Muschamp walks on water here? Did he not feel he could have blitzed and played man? Seriously, Greg Davis must have killed Bevo or something.
DoubleB - January 2, 2009
I'm not saying Muschamp doesn't deserve criticism
But there’s no question in my mind that our offense really screwed up in the first half. After all of our flub ups, we only gave up 22 points and had forced a few Tech punts and field goals. Our defense wasn’t stellar, but they kept us in the game in the first half when Tech could have blown it wide open.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
Furthermore
That last TD by Crabtree was Tech’s only offensive touchdown in the second half. If our freshman safety would catch the ball, it never happens. All things considered, more blame goes to the offense for that game.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
SEC Defenses 1, Big 12 Offenses 0
And with a thud.
the1austin - January 2, 2009
To be fair
Tech still posted 34 points. It’s not like when Tech plays Alabama a few years ago when ’Bama won 13-10. Then you can legitimately say that the SEC defense just stifled that offense. But yes, the SEC defense won this round, since 34 is “low” for Tech.
TheElusiveShadow - January 2, 2009
I'm glad that Fox News' Shepard Smith

GoHorns1 - January 2, 2009
HA, HA, HA!
Ha, friggin’ Ha, Ha, Ha!
HA, HA, HA, HA – Tech Sucks!
