I’m tired of everyone expecting TX to do ‘more’ shoot FL is currently having a tough time w/Arkansas and ‘bama and VT can’t really say much more…this was a quality win if not a very UGLY one!!!!
Saying two things that got mixed together, sorry:
1. Our 05 DBs were good enough that they make 05 v. 09 a toss-up — the 09 D isn’t nearly as good against the pass and doesn’t have an on-field coach as good as Huff
2. The only difference now is that most of our players are actually playing up to potential, rather than just the DBs, and that’s on Muschamp.
Should get lambasted for letting Sam Bradford put a uniform on these last two weeks. That hit he took was pretty routine and if he reinjured it taking that hit then he CLEARLY was not fully healed. I would guess surgery may happen now.
But he made the right choice to take the surgery instead of risking further injury..
I am beginning to thing stoops talked Bradford in playing this second time around.. rumor has it that his parents were against it
But lately it hasn’t been working out too well for him. I used to wonder if Stoops was perhaps the better coach (after we went 0 for 5 forever ago), but he’s either lost his touch or has been exposed, or both. And either way, I would never trade our Nice Guy Mack for that selfish SOB.
But if Bradford hadn’t been in the game (as it was rumored his parents would have preferred), he could not have gotten injured. It’s a lot more difficult for him to get injured standing on the sideline. Stoops’ selfishness caused Bradford to be in the game which then caused the injury. Bradford should be in the NFL anyway, and if he’s out forever, it’s gonna be a lot harder to convince players of his caliber to stick around and risk injuries that hurt their NFL prospects, so it’s bad mojo all around.
And this is the celebration thread, not the troll thread.
GD did enough. We were stagnant in the first half, a different team in the second. Will we face a defense like this the rest of the season? I doubt it .. not until the Championship Game. Our D is so good, and our O good enough, that I feel confident vs. Mizzou, OSU and whoever plays from the North come December.
isn’t good enough. This version of good enough and being a second half team won’t get us far in the title game, esp. if it’s ‘Bama who’s looking FIERCE this year.
The offense is supposed to make the win happen by scoring points, and the D is supposed to enable it by preventing the other team from scoring points. Basics. Our game was upside down because the O was the enablers and not the winners.
Defense wins football games. Period. If you don’t believe that just watch Tech. If that were true about offense then Tech would have won multiple national titles. You cannot win consistently without an incredibly good defense. Thank god for Muschamp.
unless we want to see Gilbert back there full time just like OU is dealing with now that play calling and O-line protection needs to put a full game together and soon…we can’t do this against a ‘Bama or FL defense or we’ll get slaughtered…
Whether it’s UTEP, Tech, CU, or OU, has essentially boiled down to whether Muschamp’s winnination has managed to overcome Davis’ suckritude. It’s provable. With math.
According to William Little (PhD in Sunshine Fluid Dynamics, Texas, circa 1896), “the victoriousness function of Longhorn Football can be accurately modeled by a continual differential equation determined by the second-order derivative of the delta between the Muschamp Win Quotient and the Davis Fail Vector. QED.”
I don’t understand why people are still on Davis’s case when its well established that Mack is the one who is keeping the offense conservative and Davis is the one who wants try crazy shit.
Go Horns. Its pretty clear to me that we’re playing Bama if we win out. Bama has a better defense than OU does, it’ll be a hell of a matchup.
is that we are truly playing SEC type football, but are getting doubted. Every other year, the SEC is praised for playing the way we have. Granted we are Texas and are expected to put up points, but the double standard is hilarious…
but gaining 130 yards on the ground in the second half is not bad…we just cant seem to do it in the first half thats all.
and you have to commend the effort of Colt Mccoy(he was sick all week, as per interview after the game) to tackle Brian jackson after the interception…if he misses Jackson is gone to the endzone
and they seemed like decent calls with all of the upfield pressure that OU was creating. The plays weren’t executed very well whether it be on the O-line, the receivers blocking, or the person catching the pass not using their blocks properly.
And it doesn’t mean anything…it hasn’t gone to the best player in awhile because then Colt woulda gotten it last year since he was the best SINGLE player and Bradford was simply the leader on the highest scoring (I won’t say best since we beat them) offense, but not the single best player.
As they always say, defense wins games. Never more so than today. Both defenses played lights out. Our defense won the turn over game in the end. Offense struggled big time. Had no idea Colt was sick. When Colt is healthy, he plays great. When sick, plays like crap. Played like crap today. The Texas defense is the shit. They never give up. Texas fight! Now let’s get this offense back on track!
They have three losses by a total of 5 points against three good teams. Their D is damn good and Landry is serviceable. I would not bet against OU in any of their remaining games and I could see them droping one more, maybe two but that is pushing it.
I was brought to tears today.
This game is just so draining.
Hung over this morning,
Had almost no sleep because I was so nervous about this game.
Would take a nap but so many GREAT games on today.
Now we can watch the rest of the game today in such a carefree manner. That is the bright side of the 11am game if you stay home. After a win, the day is your’s.
If anyone saw the FSU Gtech game, FSU could NOT stop the option at all! THey were using onside kicks and 4th down attempts instead of giving the ball back.
If Florida trips up like they almost did last night and then beats Bama, an undefeated Iowa could sneak in or even an undefeated Cincinnati, though much less likely. And if USC wins out their early loss may allow them to jump a one loss SEC champ in the human polls, but that might not be enough to overcome the computers.
I’m in Charlottesville attending UVA and the hatred for Al Groh is more than the ire for GD at Texas. Everyone here was sorta hoping UVA would go 1-11 (with the 1 being Va Tech)
I think we have to use Colt in our running game to win the championship..
Think about, run the zone read like we did with Vince but ave Colt/Shipley to keep the defense honest with the pass. I think we can do it. I think its just a matter or when we want to to keep Colt healthy…
I don’t think anyone will disagree. The Colt designed runs today worked really well (ignoring the fumble for staying up too long). His running helps the passing game so much because the d-line has to contain and the linebackers cannot fall back into coverage as much.
I still don’t think it really was a fuble even if reply upheld it because of the conclusive rule. If it was called down by ground i think they would have upheld it also.
To keep defenses honest with the pass — too much pressure up front (assuming they didn’t get burned by Vince) and it was an easy dump-off the DT — their completion % was comparable to McCoy/Shipley, and it was almost always enough for a 1st down.
For the most part “keeping defenses honest” with a passing attack just means being able to get behind the rush.
Of course, it also helped that we could run every play out of the same formation.
But then again, as a Vanderbilt alum as well as a third-generation Longhorn, I don’t hate OU (or even A&M) as much as I hate Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee. TTU has been cracking that list lately, though.
I don’t think he’s nearly as good a pro prospect as he’s made out to be. I’m not a draft scout, obviously, but I’ve been a draftnik for about a dozen years from now, watching every available moment of college football, the combine, and draft day coverage available, and I just don’t see it. The guy looks like a big statue with a decent arm, but not an all-world guy. If Heupel or White had had Bradford’s size, I think they would’ve had just as much hype, and they weren’t pro-caliber QBs either.
OUsucks played so hard and made so much more of a game of it than it should have been, and as such, has earned the right to just be “OU” in my book for a while. Seriously, I can respect their performance today. Looking at the matchup before the game, it should’ve been a big win for UT, but the other team wanted it more and played harder. It’s by good fortune and a few breaks that UT walks away still undefeated.
All heart, like we played last year. Fortunately for us, they weren’t as successful as we were last year. They were balls out the whole game, and left it all on the field. Good for them.
There are some serious problems with this team. Half way through the season we still have not lived up to anywhere near our potential for any 4 consecutive quarters. We barely beat a 2-loss team without its starting QB. I don’t know if it is over-confidence or the stress of the pre-season hype about Heismans and MNC’s. I don’t know if it is Greg Davis or Mack Brown or that we over-estimated the talent we have. But despite being a win, this needs to set off warning bells. If we seek the MNC, we can’t afford a loss before we make some changes. Whether it is play-calling or personnel or attitude, something needs to change or we will wind up losing a great chance at the MNC.
For starters -
- Colt is not nearly the runner or the scrambler Vince was - he is OK but let’s be realistic here
- None of our backs is as fast as Charles or as reliable as Selvin
- We don’t have a TE that can play the role David Thomas did — blocking or passing, let alone both — and that seriously limits what we can do out of a given formation
- We don’t have a reliable jump-ball WR like Limas, so we have trouble stretching the field
We don’t have the TE but I think we have the rest. Also, I don’t think the 2005 team had a Shipley.
Charles = Monroe/Whittaker
Selvin = Newton
Limas = Malcolm
Now, if we can get those people to play up to their potential is another story. Especially Malcolm but he does have the talent if you’ve seen him go up and get the ball and his speed. I think this gives us the best chance to win though in a tough championship game. What we are doing now is not gonna work in my opinion.
Just pointing out the 05 O was playing to a number of very particular strengths that we don’t have right now, so it doesn’t make sense to say that we should “reinstall” it
Most of all, personnel dictates our play much more than in ‘05. We lined up in the exact same formation in all but 1 play in the Rose Bowl vs. USC. That’s simply not possible with our current personnel — we have more/better skill players like Shipley, but fewer multi-role players like Vince and David Thomas, so we need to make more decisions before the snap — and of course that means letting Greg Davis make more decisions…
Kasey Studdard and Lyle Sendlein weren’t exactly All-Americans. Our ’05 line benefited a lot from the fact that collapsing the pocket just meant that VY would scramble, which was arguably even worse than letting him pass.
Our N-S running has sucked since Ricky left, so I’d call this a toss-up. Our OLs are just generally subpar, blocking especially
Lyle Sendlein: Consensus Big-12 first team, STARTS for the Cardinals
Kasey Studdard: Consensus Big 12 first team, STARTS for Texans
Jonathan Scott, Justin Blalock, Tony Hills
They ALL start IN NFL…i doubt any of our Oline will even make it to NFL…
I said that our 05 OL got a lot of help from other parts of the offense.
And no, Sendlein and Studdard weren’t all that great in college — Studdard was drafted in round 6 and Sendlein wasn’t drafted at all.
Our offensive linemen have always performed way better in the NFL than in college — that’s exactly my point. Our blocking up front has always sucked and that’s on the coaches — it’s NOT about the players “stepping up their game” like cj43 said. We haven’t had a decent North-South running game for years, even when Cedric Benson was running behind most of the players you just named.
Kasey and Lyle were both awesome guys and great players, but neither was coached up to their potential, as should be obvious now. That line was playing lights out and we still couldn’t run downhill.
Also to Kasey and Lyle’s credit — their bios listing them at 6’3" each indicates that they’ve both grown much taller since graduating from college. cough
This offensive unit also set the school record in most yardage.
Again, I think it would be ridiculous/retarded to assume that VY did EVERYTHING by just being VY. Yes, that line was playing lights out and we still ran the ball real well. (School record of yard per rushing play: 5.9, 55 Rushing TDs)Are you sure u weren’t watching the aggies??
I am sorry but people dont grow much taller (or become giants) when they are 24,25…It is rare, and when they do its mostly likely due to underlying disease or some kind of abnormalities…
UT listed them as 6’5 (Lyle) and 6’3 (Studdard), so i dunno what the f u are talking about.
And yes, I think u should get that cough checked out, it could be h1n1, syphilis, or bronchitis..or if u are doing ur own hernia exam for saying all these ridiculous things, then bravo sir bravo
Due to perspective, the reference points for Vince (who actually measured out at 6’4", if I recall correctly) and Sendlein are useless. Sweed’s a better comparison, but didn’t he actually turn out to be 6’2" or 6’3"?
but he actually grew a bit in his first year. Regardless, 6’5" is pretty accurate.
The point is — Kasey Studdard is not 2 inches shorter than Vince Young. Not even close. Nor is Lyle Sendlein as tall as Vince.
I can’t find a clip or a picture where they’re all standing next to each other, but there are moments in the above clip where Vince is standing behind where Studdard is in the above pic, and his head is at or above the shelves in the background.
Again, this isn’t a knock on Kasey (actually, his stature makes his accomplishments all the more impressive), but the dude is not 6 foot 3.
I was just going by what the Texas and Texans websites said
I have way more important things to do than watch a UT game with imaginary ruler on my hand. How about u get a current pictures of them with their respective teammates? i think u can really prove ur point then.
But unless there is height growing anabolic steroids available, you do not grow much taller after college.
now i know u are really smoking crack. do you really expect every one of our linemen to bulldoze their assignments on every single play??
VY is/was great, but he had lotta help from his OL. How much time do you expect him to have when majority of our passing games and plays were ridiculously simple?? Also, without that great group of OL of 05-06 (same guys, majority of them anyway), there is no way Colt would have that much success in his freshmen yr.
and our OL did not “always” performed better—see Mike Williams, Leonard Davis. Get your head out of the gutter and educate yourself
In the past Mack Brown has been very good making adjustments after a loss. We can’t afford a loss, especially with a lousy SOS this year. Instead of “business as usual,” next week he should make some major adjustments before Kansas or A&M (or even Baylor) knocks us out of the running.
He has been fighting a head cold all week. He was horse during the post game interview. I don’t think we have anything to worry about with this offense. OU was the best defense they have faced and will face this year. The Longhorn Offense and McCoy will bounce back.
I still say he was down when the refs called the fumble touchback. He had control when his back hit the ground jarring the ball loose. Not to mention his rump probably touched before that. Cudos to to refs though to the muf punt that Texas recovered and marking it down where Williams picked it up for the none advancement rule. The other ref who signaled TD must have fogotten about that rule. Williams needs to have better ball security though.
I honestly thought the ball should be advanceable on a muffed punt. Not a KR, because it’s not an offensive snap, but a punt play should be treated as a regular offense/defense play.
if the Horns can gut out a win while really sinking up the joint on offense against a decent team I feel better after today. If they actually start to execute on offense the future looks sooooo bright.
I predicted a few weeks ago if Bradford was back from that injury for the game today that he wouldn’t sty in long because he would most likely receive another hit to reinjure it. I’m sure the amount of stress he put on that shoulder last week against Baylor didn’t help either.
I am REALLY pleased with GD today..anyone else with me on this?
1. He established the run game (although it took some time)
-misdirection plays/motion plays were brilliant
-timely QB draws were amazing
-although, i think we could have run some naked boot legs and reverses/WR sweeps
2. He stretched the field by dialing up some deep balls
3. He was really confident in Freshmen Goodwin to make plays in crucial times—that was clutch
4. Most Importantly: he ADJUSTED well to Venable’s scheme.
-As much as people dog on Venable, he had an excellent game plan today. Instead of sitting on zone, he attacked Colt and our shitty OL time after time. He disrupted our passing and rhythm. His blitzes were timely and well planned. I thought Greg countered with quick passes, and fade routes. Again his weird-guard/center/tackle pull seem to work
On that misdirection play with fozzy and Monroe, they handed off to Monroe once for 6 yds, but never gave it to him again. I liked how they used it as a triple option, and either colt kept it or handed it to fozzy or DJ. But, they needed to give it to DJ more, imo.
Colt was told not to throw to a doubled or triple teamed Shipley? If you want to see impressive, I’ve got this beautiful cceanfront spot in Flagstaff you’ve got to see.
When it comes to playcalling, I am critical of GD as anyone else
But u have to agree that the playcalling was much better in this game then against colorado.
And yes, I know that isnt saying much. But in terms of mixing it up plays and keeping the defense guessing, I thought GD did a pretty good job.
I thought using Shipley as a decoy in the second half was pretty brilliant. (thus opening up Goodwin).
I really think more of the blame of our inept offense in the first half goes to Colt and our laughable OL. You can be a GOD of offensive coordinator all you want, but if ur line cant block worth shit/commit retarded penalties, and your 4-yr starter/heisman-runner up/ur # 1 receiver’s roommate-fishing buddy FAIL to go through progressions, have almost no pocket presence, and turn the ball over repeatedly, I guess that could make the offensive coordinator look really bad.
I am pleased in a sense that his play calling was B or B+. We just failed to execute…alot
The blame is on GD. If we had a decent (or God) of an offensive coordinator, he would adjust his playcalling that best suits his O-Line. You have a mobile O-Line, but not great at basic zone blocking. You have a mobile QB, but coverage downfield limits your targets. You have 2 very fast RB’s who can change the game with one break.
A good OC would have changed his whole offensive philosophy mid game, and realize our best chance would be to run more options. I’m not talking about the abortion of what GD likes to call an option—The speed option from Shotgun. I’m talking about the triple option look that UF does religiously. Make the LBers and Safeties commit to the run, the do a play action pass out of that same formation. We tried doing this and it worked well, but GD decided to resort back to his old ways of short passes that were covered VERY well. The option game is GREAT for teams that have weakness in the O-Line.
I am very certain that triple option is the least viable option. And I am not sure if I agree with you on our OL being mobile. It seems like they whiff on lots of pulls and traps.
Triple option will do us less harm than good:
1. It will take a huge hit in recruiting. Top recruits are less likely to go to a triple option team that doesnt really work in NFL.
2. In this day of athletes with speed and great athleticism, it is fairly easy to defend triple option—ex. Miami vs. G Tech.
3. We dont have Tebow like UF does. Colt can’t break tackles from 4-5 players and bulldoze his way into 8-9 yd gain when he is supposed to be tackled for loss. I believe UF’s success in triple option comes from having Tebow and Hernandez (a TE, something we dont have)
Quite frankly,I think the current offensive formations suits our strength (yea this sounds weird), but we dont have a reliable TE, and we have pretty good talent at WRs. We just need better plays from Colt (we should run him more), stretching the field, and 2 RB sets for max protection/wheel routes (Colt rarely sees these tho). Less bone-headed plays and better execution should be good enough to make our offensive woes go away.
You're under the assumption that we would switch to the Triple Option
it would be used as a wrinkle, not as a set scheme. We saw some of it yesterday, but not enough for other teams to take it serious. Trust me, our O-Line is mobile. Just because you saw them whiff doesnt mean they can run. It means they are bad.
Option blocking isnt about driving people back. Its about confusion and creating lanes for 3 different back.
The abortion of a first half was primarily on Colt and the O-line. I appreciated that GD tried to swtich things up a bit – running more misdirection and at least attempting a pass out of the WildHorn. My god, the O line was awful, though.
There are 3 things that piss me off about the play calls that I can think of right now.
1. 3rd and 1, midfield, they come out spread formation, no RB, and throw incomplete.
If the strength of the OU defense is their line and linebackers, why wouldn’t Texas try and keep OU honest with the show of run if you are going to pass. If that fails, you have a dump of option if all receivers are covered or an extra blocker as last line of defense for Colt buying extra time for a pass or a Colt scramble.
2. 2nd and 8/9, you complete a 7 yard pass, run hurry up Ace formation, run get stuffed.
I can understand the advantages of going hurry up and generally like the idea. I don’t understand why you have to do a basic handoff when you have a speed guy as your RB. Run counter or toss sweep. Use the weapons to their fullest potential. Don’t run them straight into the back of David “Oh my fu%$ing gawd are you kidding me with that” Snow. What about going playaction bootleg giving Colt a Run/Pass option?
3. The Wildhorn, after you establish a bit of rhythm and the roll that POS out there.
I’m over it. They have run this, I don’t know, 20 times this year and it has worked, correct me if I wrong, once? You know what sucks most about this? They’re going to run it again and at some point some poor kid is going to miss an assignment, the Longhorns are going to score and all of you who think GD is a genius are going to say, “Why the hell didn’t we do this more?”, and that pisses me off to think about.
To all of you that blame Colt and OL and not the person that deserves the blame, Greg Davis, I have to ask you who you think the offense responsibilities belong to ultimately. If you think Davis is not responsible for the schemes of the play call, then I don’t understand what is going on with this team. If you know I’m going to come over to your house and kick your door down everyday, why in the hell would you blame the door?
i consider throwing more than 5 yds from colt a deep ball
i guess u went to the bathroom quite a bit when colt was throwing fade routes to shipley and malcolm williams
do u really think jello-armed colt can chunk 50 yds? get real, be realistic
i watched Tom Brady throw deep balls against snow/wind today
I believe you are one of those who said u dont have to have the elite arm strength to be successful in NFL. Do you seriously think he can throw accurate deep balls down the field?
He was barely able to put enough zip on some of the short passes.
Ex. Throw to Greg Smith was actually a great catch by EBS. Colt almost short-armed it
Even if it he fumbled, it was recovere din the end zone. Did anybody catch Verne Lundquist saying that if he fumbled it, “it would be an incomplete pass”? Idiot.
Or not in the SEC, or worse both, then a win by less than 30 points is a loss. I hate the SEC. I hate the constant ass kissing commentators do to them no matter what. I hate how everyone talks about Tebow like the second coming, even though he is a huge ass and TOTALLY overrated. I hate that OU couldn’t manage to pull off a win against FL last year and earn the Big 12 some fucking respect. The SEC is not that effing wonderful. They are not God’s gift to football. And FL is totally overrated…almost no penalty went against them. Like has been mentioned, the refs wanted FL to win and were going to make the penalties work in FL’s favor. Piss poor officiating.
at least our close, ugly win was not at home, and we didn’t need multiple missed field goals and blown touchdowns and generous officiating to secure it…
The officiating went more against us it seems, esp. in the first half…there was some crap that really killed the momentum we had (including Kirk’s after an awesome catch head butt personal foul that cost 15 yards…but that was completely on him)
Bogus unsportsmanlike, very questionable pass interference against Ark and no offensive PI on FL at the end.
But Arkansas missed two FG’s and missed two obvious TD’s by poor throws and their receivers running into each other. Arkansas had this…perhaps it is best to remain #2 or 3 as Bama and FL will take one another out.
If I'm a Florida fan watching the UT game today...
…I’m a little worried: “Wow – they can play defense, too.”
If I’m a UT fan watching watching the Florida game, I’m a little giddy: “Wow, these guys are fantastically overrated. Please don’t lose, so we can be the ones to pop Tebow’s cherry.”
That we’ll be playing ‘Bama in the NC because Bama is looking VERY good and will, if there’s truth to rankings, jump FL this week. Honestly, FL should be #3 after us because at least we had a tight one to a ranked team at a neutral site
Was reading over some of the comments on sooners sight. Those people scare me. I remember now why I don’t like going to the game in Dallas. I understand both teams have some fans that are jerks but seriously. These guys still believe they can salvage their season and get to a BCS game and that they only lost the game because the refs gave us all the great calls.
They feel they DESERVE the BCS game, not that they have to EARN it like the rest of us. But hey, they also felt entitled to cheat during the land grab, too, and that’s the history they aspire to with their mascot (can you call it that?) of “Sooners.”
this defense has nowhere near the talent at DB or MLB (anyone forgetting Aaron Harris?). For that matter, whoever it was that had the personal foul early on had me wondering if we’d found Robert Killebrew and brought him back.
Look, we don’t have VY or Dave Thomas or nearly the offensive line which is why if this team is going to win….it’s going to be by coaching.
As much as I loved pulling out the win, I must voice a little sadness over the fact that Colt didn’t help himself in the national eye. I don’t usually give a hoot about individual awards but I think that every top program should have people in contention for those awards. For The Colt however, I’ve always hoped he’d win that Heisman so that it would both cap off his career and also give us a non-RB winner of the award.
I also couldn’t help but think about how 7-8 years ago, we’d all have been lamenting the lack of in-game adjustments by GD and moaning over what would have been a loss. This is the progress of a program.
Now, does Jackson Jeffcoat wanna play for the winners or the losers?!?!?!
You are probably right in a sense that this defense doesnt have accomplishments like 05 team
But…in terms of DBs we have enough to talent to match that…either this season or the next season. Have you been watching Earl Thomas, Aaron Williams (minus the mistackle that gave away a TD), Curtis Brown, Chyke Brown’s play today? all of these guys are sophomores and juniors.
And it was Kheeston Randall who had the personal penalty, but that was no where near Killebrew level.
MLB is little thin due to Jared Norton Injury, but I believe he is more talented/athletic than Aaron Harris who was really good at ankle tackles…
This team will start play better when Colt does. He does not look very comfortable in the pocket and lack the pocket presence 4 yr starter should have. He had a ridiculous season last year, and we have been expecting great things from him this season. But I believe that is no longer the case. If we play great defense and colt doesn’t suck too much and dont turn over the ball that much, we will get our 5th MNC
Only has 3 teams in the top 25 going into this weekend. Big 12 has 5 (us, Nebraska, OSU, Kansas, OU) going into this weekend. WHY/HOW is the SEC better than the Big 12? The rankings certainly don’t show that…
Because they have won the last 3 National Championships....
Its basically based on past years performance in bowl games. The Big10 has Ohio State who keeps getting their butt kicked in BCS games. The Big12 has Oklahoma who can’t win a BCS bowl game or any other big game outside the conference. So, until that changes for a few years, we’ll keep hearing about how great the SEC and USC is.
was a specific option to the right where Colt was at the keep/pitch point. There was a seemingly wide lane for him to run as the pitch defender was on the running back (can’t remember who). Anyway, Colt seemed to stop, freeze, then pitch the ball for a loss. To me, that seems to sum up the kind of year Colt’s having. Last year he was unconscious but this year he seems so unsure and second guessing every move he makes. Am I over-analyzing the situation or am I dead-on?
His biggest problem to me is staring down receivers, especially Shipley. Despite destroying UTEP, that pick six worried me a bit, and he threw several balls that could have been returned for touchdowns yesterday. My guess is he’s starting to get happy feet – he doesn’t trust his protection and feels he needs to get the ball out quickly, so he’s not going through his progressions, just staring at the number one option (Shipley).
no such thing as a bad win

agreed...
I’m tired of everyone expecting TX to do ‘more’ shoot FL is currently having a tough time w/Arkansas and ‘bama and VT can’t really say much more…this was a quality win if not a very UGLY one!!!!
longhornJ - October 17, 2009
Offense made enough plays to win
Although could’ve made it much more of a blowout, defense is amazing
40AS - October 17, 2009
who would have thought that coming into this season
Earl Thomas and Jordan Shipley would be carrying us….
thebrat - October 17, 2009
I still don’t think that.
But gosh, thank heavens for Goodwin.
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
Earl Thomas and Jordan Shipley are great players. Need help from the offense.

2009's Defense vs. 2005's?
This could be the best Mack Brown era defense yet. Amazing performance.
JohnsonUT - October 17, 2009
DBs are not quite there
Huff, Griffin, Ross, Brown…
Coaching the difference.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
Coaching *is* the difference
We all sound like broken records saying this, but it’s true
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
So Akina and Chizik coached up the DBs better than Akina and Muschamp do?
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
No,
Saying two things that got mixed together, sorry:
1. Our 05 DBs were good enough that they make 05 v. 09 a toss-up — the 09 D isn’t nearly as good against the pass and doesn’t have an on-field coach as good as Huff
2. The only difference now is that most of our players are actually playing up to potential, rather than just the DBs, and that’s on Muschamp.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
DBs this year are also younger.
JohnsonUT - October 17, 2009
Bob Stoops
Should get lambasted for letting Sam Bradford put a uniform on these last two weeks. That hit he took was pretty routine and if he reinjured it taking that hit then he CLEARLY was not fully healed. I would guess surgery may happen now.
40AS - October 17, 2009
Yeah that was not a dirty hit
It is unfortunate the Bradford has been sacrificed at the alter of Bob Stoop’s selfishness
Crimson Fog - October 17, 2009
he should have gone pro a year ago
Hats off to Jermain Grisham for making the right decision
Crimson Fog - October 17, 2009
umm gresham came back as well
NeTexHorn - October 17, 2009
and lost his whole season in the process
still, both Gresham and Bradford are early first-round draft picks
Microtonal - October 17, 2009
He did
But he made the right choice to take the surgery instead of risking further injury..
I am beginning to thing stoops talked Bradford in playing this second time around.. rumor has it that his parents were against it
Crimson Fog - October 17, 2009
yep
this is the reward for loyalty, i guess.
zissou - October 17, 2009
We've always known Stoops is selfish
But lately it hasn’t been working out too well for him. I used to wonder if Stoops was perhaps the better coach (after we went 0 for 5 forever ago), but he’s either lost his touch or has been exposed, or both. And either way, I would never trade our Nice Guy Mack for that selfish SOB.
Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
LOL
The Sooners’ training staff indicated he was healed. As evidenced by the hit, he probably wasn’t.
But your suggestion that Stoops’ own selfishness caused the injury?
Laughable.
Brandon Bibb - October 17, 2009
It didn't cause the injury
But if Bradford hadn’t been in the game (as it was rumored his parents would have preferred), he could not have gotten injured. It’s a lot more difficult for him to get injured standing on the sideline. Stoops’ selfishness caused Bradford to be in the game which then caused the injury. Bradford should be in the NFL anyway, and if he’s out forever, it’s gonna be a lot harder to convince players of his caliber to stick around and risk injuries that hurt their NFL prospects, so it’s bad mojo all around.
And this is the celebration thread, not the troll thread.
Katie McBeast - October 18, 2009
I think he could get killed this week.
Especially if the shoulder was injured as bad as before.
JohnsonUT - October 17, 2009
If Bradford plays again this season you know for sure that Stoops seriously doesn’t give a shit about his players at all.

It doesn't matter who we play --
— every single game is Will Muschamp vs. Greg Davis.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
+1
Microtonal - October 17, 2009
No it's not
It’s pretty much just Will Muschamp. We know GD sucks. You’d think our O would be better practicing against our D though…
Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
Offense improved in second half .. again
NYCHorn - October 17, 2009
Sometimes "good enough"
isn’t good enough. This version of good enough and being a second half team won’t get us far in the title game, esp. if it’s ‘Bama who’s looking FIERCE this year.
Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
Yes, "good enough" will eventually get your burned
There will come a time when you won’t be able to flip that switch and turn it on. Hopefully we will get our stuff together before that happens to us..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
Funny to say that
After a game in which the offense went from terrible to good enough and it enabled the win
40AS - October 17, 2009
But it shouldn't work that way
The offense is supposed to make the win happen by scoring points, and the D is supposed to enable it by preventing the other team from scoring points. Basics. Our game was upside down because the O was the enablers and not the winners.
Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
Defense wins football games. Period. If you don’t believe that just watch Tech. If that were true about offense then Tech would have won multiple national titles. You cannot win consistently without an incredibly good defense. Thank god for Muschamp.
dimecoverage - October 17, 2009
I felt like I was watching an SEC game
gwh65 - October 17, 2009
'good enough' may get Colt killed...
unless we want to see Gilbert back there full time just like OU is dealing with now that play calling and O-line protection needs to put a full game together and soon…we can’t do this against a ‘Bama or FL defense or we’ll get slaughtered…

Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
Good enough is by definition good enough
Wells - October 18, 2009
Every game so far,
Whether it’s UTEP, Tech, CU, or OU, has essentially boiled down to whether Muschamp’s winnination has managed to overcome Davis’ suckritude. It’s provable. With math.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
To wit:
According to William Little (PhD in Sunshine Fluid Dynamics, Texas, circa 1896), “the victoriousness function of Longhorn Football can be accurately modeled by a continual differential equation determined by the second-order derivative of the delta between the Muschamp Win Quotient and the Davis Fail Vector. QED.”
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
Wait, are you saying the offense played poorly in the UTEP Game?
Wells - October 18, 2009
I don’t understand why people are still on Davis’s case when its well established that Mack is the one who is keeping the offense conservative and Davis is the one who wants try crazy shit.
Go Horns. Its pretty clear to me that we’re playing Bama if we win out. Bama has a better defense than OU does, it’ll be a hell of a matchup.
hodad - October 17, 2009
Meanwhile, in Gainesville . . .
. . . Florida is still scoreless late 1st.
Hopkins Horn - October 17, 2009
What I find so hilarious
is that we are truly playing SEC type football, but are getting doubted. Every other year, the SEC is praised for playing the way we have. Granted we are Texas and are expected to put up points, but the double standard is hilarious…

I hate the SEC and all the “well, the Big 12 really isn’t that good” BS that flies around. I never understand why.

but gaining 130 yards on the ground in the second half is not bad…we just cant seem to do it in the first half thats all.
and you have to commend the effort of Colt Mccoy(he was sick all week, as per interview after the game) to tackle Brian jackson after the interception…if he misses Jackson is gone to the endzone

aaronlybrand - October 17, 2009 via mobile
We got into red zone twice and turned it over.
Even if we just get FGs on both those drives, the O ends up looking way better .

I don't think so
They have three losses by a total of 5 points against three good teams. Their D is damn good and Landry is serviceable. I would not bet against OU in any of their remaining games and I could see them droping one more, maybe two but that is pushing it.

40AS - October 17, 2009
In the long run...
Their one loss will put them out of the mix if we go undefeated. It will be us against the SEC champ if we take care of business..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
SEC champ not guaranteed
If Florida trips up like they almost did last night and then beats Bama, an undefeated Iowa could sneak in or even an undefeated Cincinnati, though much less likely. And if USC wins out their early loss may allow them to jump a one loss SEC champ in the human polls, but that might not be enough to overcome the computers.
Wells - October 18, 2009
As ridiculous as it is, yes, I think an undefeated Iowa or Cincinnati would sneak past a still-undefeated Boise State.
Boise State seems destined to finish the season ranked #3, no matter what the other teams do.

I think we have to use Colt in our running game to win the championship..
Think about, run the zone read like we did with Vince but ave Colt/Shipley to keep the defense honest with the pass. I think we can do it. I think its just a matter or when we want to to keep Colt healthy…
cj43 - October 17, 2009
Yep
I don’t think anyone will disagree. The Colt designed runs today worked really well (ignoring the fumble for staying up too long). His running helps the passing game so much because the d-line has to contain and the linebackers cannot fall back into coverage as much.
JohnsonUT - October 17, 2009
fumble
I still don’t think it really was a fuble even if reply upheld it because of the conclusive rule. If it was called down by ground i think they would have upheld it also.
Ryan2907 - October 17, 2009
No, we had that in 05 -- two words:
David. Thomas.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
Agreed but VY was not near the thrower Colt is..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
And vice versa ofcourse..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
But it was enough
To keep defenses honest with the pass — too much pressure up front (assuming they didn’t get burned by Vince) and it was an easy dump-off the DT — their completion % was comparable to McCoy/Shipley, and it was almost always enough for a 1st down.
For the most part “keeping defenses honest” with a passing attack just means being able to get behind the rush.
Of course, it also helped that we could run every play out of the same formation.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
Yeah, this Davis Thomas talk is making me wish we had TE of his caliber...
That would greatly help out any offense..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
I miss him
He was arguably as critical to the ’05 offense as VY… Shipley is awesome but not nearly the matchup problem that Thomas was
godelmetric - October 17, 2009

longhorn_dan - October 17, 2009
But he and Colt are friends

Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
same here
he’s clearly a very good QB
But then again, as a Vanderbilt alum as well as a third-generation Longhorn, I don’t hate OU (or even A&M) as much as I hate Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee. TTU has been cracking that list lately, though.
Microtonal - October 17, 2009
He’s another system QB, like Heupel and White.
Jones will be as well, except I think he has more talent than Bradford does.
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
i think you have bradford and jones backwards
bradford is not graham harrell. he’s going to play on sundays for a while…as long as the shoulder holds up
APinAustin - October 17, 2009
I don’t think he’s nearly as good a pro prospect as he’s made out to be. I’m not a draft scout, obviously, but I’ve been a draftnik for about a dozen years from now, watching every available moment of college football, the combine, and draft day coverage available, and I just don’t see it. The guy looks like a big statue with a decent arm, but not an all-world guy. If Heupel or White had had Bradford’s size, I think they would’ve had just as much hype, and they weren’t pro-caliber QBs either.
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
As I said in the 2nd half thread:
OUsucks played so hard and made so much more of a game of it than it should have been, and as such, has earned the right to just be “OU” in my book for a while. Seriously, I can respect their performance today. Looking at the matchup before the game, it should’ve been a big win for UT, but the other team wanted it more and played harder. It’s by good fortune and a few breaks that UT walks away still undefeated.
I’ll take it, but OUsucks is OU for now.
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
They played like they had nothing to lose
All heart, like we played last year. Fortunately for us, they weren’t as successful as we were last year. They were balls out the whole game, and left it all on the field. Good for them.
Katie McBeast - October 17, 2009
Yes, we beat OU but...
OBdoc - October 17, 2009
agreed
7Swords of Salat - October 17, 2009
Time to revamp the offense..
I think bring back the 2005 offense with Vince and run it with Colt..
cj43 - October 17, 2009
That makes no sense
For starters
-he is OK but let’s be realistic here- Colt is not nearly the runner or the scrambler Vince was -
- None of our backs is as fast as Charles or as reliable as Selvin
- We don’t have a TE that can play the role David Thomas did — blocking or passing, let alone both — and that seriously limits what we can do out of a given formation
- We don’t have a reliable jump-ball WR like Limas, so we have trouble stretching the field
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
I disagree....
We don’t have the TE but I think we have the rest. Also, I don’t think the 2005 team had a Shipley.
Charles = Monroe/Whittaker
Selvin = Newton
Limas = Malcolm
Now, if we can get those people to play up to their potential is another story. Especially Malcolm but he does have the talent if you’ve seen him go up and get the ball and his speed. I think this gives us the best chance to win though in a tough championship game. What we are doing now is not gonna work in my opinion.
cj43 - October 17, 2009
Not disagreeing that we have talent
Just pointing out the 05 O was playing to a number of very particular strengths that we don’t have right now, so it doesn’t make sense to say that we should “reinstall” it
Most of all, personnel dictates our play much more than in ‘05. We lined up in the exact same formation in all but 1 play in the Rose Bowl vs. USC. That’s simply not possible with our current personnel — we have more/better skill players like Shipley, but fewer multi-role players like Vince and David Thomas, so we need to make more decisions before the snap — and of course that means letting Greg Davis make more decisions…
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
I think our main problem is the oline..
Without them stepping up their game. scheme doesn’t really matter.
cj43 - October 17, 2009
Our Oline has some problems right now, but
Kasey Studdard and Lyle Sendlein weren’t exactly All-Americans. Our ’05 line benefited a lot from the fact that collapsing the pocket just meant that VY would scramble, which was arguably even worse than letting him pass.
Our N-S running has sucked since Ricky left, so I’d call this a toss-up. Our OLs are just generally subpar, blocking especially
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
are u on crack??
Lyle Sendlein: Consensus Big-12 first team, STARTS for the Cardinals
Kasey Studdard: Consensus Big 12 first team, STARTS for Texans
Jonathan Scott, Justin Blalock, Tony Hills
They ALL start IN NFL…i doubt any of our Oline will even make it to NFL…
hookemkp - October 17, 2009
I didn't say they were better,
I said that our 05 OL got a lot of help from other parts of the offense.
We haven’t had a decent North-South running game for years, even when Cedric Benson was running behind most of the players you just named.
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
Just to be clear,
Kasey and Lyle were both awesome guys and great players, but neither was coached up to their potential, as should be obvious now. That line was playing lights out and we still couldn’t run downhill.
Also to Kasey and Lyle’s credit — their bios listing them at 6’3" each indicates that they’ve both grown much taller since graduating from college. cough
godelmetric - October 17, 2009
If I remember correctly, that unit LED the nation in scoring offense
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Texas_Longhorns_football_team#List_of_accomplishments
And yes, I think u should get that cough checked out, it could be h1n1, syphilis, or bronchitis..or if u are doing ur own hernia exam for saying all these ridiculous things, then bravo sir bravo
hookemkp - October 18, 2009
Dude,
If Kasey Studdard is 6’3" then I’m Andre the fucking Giant
Here, let me draw you a picture since you apparently haven’t ever watched any of these guys actually play:
godelmetric - October 18, 2009
Due to perspective, the reference points for Vince (who actually measured out at 6’4", if I recall correctly) and Sendlein are useless. Sweed’s a better comparison, but didn’t he actually turn out to be 6’2" or 6’3"?
burntorangehorn - October 18, 2009
Vince came in listed at 6'4"
but he actually grew a bit in his first year.
Again, this isn’t a knock on Kasey (actually, his stature makes his accomplishments all the more impressive), but the dude is not 6 foot 3.
godelmetric - October 18, 2009
I was just going by what the Texas and Texans websites said
I have way more important things to do than watch a UT game with imaginary ruler on my hand. How about u get a current pictures of them with their respective teammates? i think u can really prove ur point then.
But unless there is height growing anabolic steroids available, you do not grow much taller after college.
hookemkp - October 19, 2009
our blocking up front has always sucked??
now i know u are really smoking crack. do you really expect every one of our linemen to bulldoze their assignments on every single play??
VY is/was great, but he had lotta help from his OL. How much time do you expect him to have when majority of our passing games and plays were ridiculously simple?? Also, without that great group of OL of 05-06 (same guys, majority of them anyway), there is no way Colt would have that much success in his freshmen yr.
and our OL did not “always” performed better—see Mike Williams, Leonard Davis. Get your head out of the gutter and educate yourself

We need to act like we lost this game
In the past Mack Brown has been very good making adjustments after a loss. We can’t afford a loss, especially with a lousy SOS this year. Instead of “business as usual,” next week he should make some major adjustments before Kansas or A&M (or even Baylor) knocks us out of the running.

He has been fighting a head cold all week. He was horse during the post game interview. I don’t think we have anything to worry about with this offense. OU was the best defense they have faced and will face this year. The Longhorn Offense and McCoy will bounce back.

longhorn_dan - October 17, 2009
Colts fumble
I still say he was down when the refs called the fumble touchback. He had control when his back hit the ground jarring the ball loose. Not to mention his rump probably touched before that. Cudos to to refs though to the muf punt that Texas recovered and marking it down where Williams picked it up for the none advancement rule. The other ref who signaled TD must have fogotten about that rule. Williams needs to have better ball security though.
Ryan2907 - October 17, 2009
I honestly thought the ball should be advanceable on a muffed punt. Not a KR, because it’s not an offensive snap, but a punt play should be treated as a regular offense/defense play.
burntorangehorn - October 17, 2009
OU rushes for negative yards
and Florida looks weak against the Hog’s defense
if the Horns can gut out a win while really sinking up the joint on offense against a decent team I feel better after today. If they actually start to execute on offense the future looks sooooo bright.

I predicted a few weeks ago if Bradford was back from that injury for the game today that he wouldn’t sty in long because he would most likely receive another hit to reinjure it. I’m sure the amount of stress he put on that shoulder last week against Baylor didn’t help either.

jcbates - October 17, 2009
Again his weird-guard/center/tackle pull seem to work
hookemkp - October 17, 2009
one thing i thought was weird
On that misdirection play with fozzy and Monroe, they handed off to Monroe once for 6 yds, but never gave it to him again. I liked how they used it as a triple option, and either colt kept it or handed it to fozzy or DJ. But, they needed to give it to DJ more, imo.
junglerules - October 17, 2009
I loved that wrinkle but I agree Monroe should have gotten it more
I wonder if it was truly an option for Colt to hand it to either or keep it.
CMDR - October 17, 2009
GD as in Greg Davis?
5 for 18 in 3rd down
2.6 yards per play at half
3.4 yards per play total
3.2 yards per pass play
8 punts
Seriously? REALLY pleased with Greg Davis?
run Bevo run - October 17, 2009
I wasn't pleased with his first half...
but I think that they did make some impressive second half adjustments.
The Immortal Iron Fist AKA AFB - October 17, 2009
What was impressive?
Colt was told not to throw to a doubled or triple teamed Shipley? If you want to see impressive, I’ve got this beautiful cceanfront spot in Flagstaff you’ve got to see.
run Bevo run - October 18, 2009
We just failed to execute…alot
hookemkp - October 18, 2009
I disagree
The option game is GREAT for teams that have weakness in the O-Line.
kriess - October 18, 2009
ok I think u make a pretty good point but
I am very certain that triple option is the least viable option.
Less bone-headed plays and better execution should be good enough to make our offensive woes go away.
hookemkp - October 18, 2009
You're under the assumption that we would switch to the Triple Option
it would be used as a wrinkle, not as a set scheme. We saw some of it yesterday, but not enough for other teams to take it serious. Trust me, our O-Line is mobile. Just because you saw them whiff doesnt mean they can run. It means they are bad.
Option blocking isnt about driving people back. Its about confusion and creating lanes for 3 different back.
kriess - October 18, 2009
I agree, somewhat
The abortion of a first half was primarily on Colt and the O-line. I appreciated that GD tried to swtich things up a bit – running more misdirection and at least attempting a pass out of the WildHorn. My god, the O line was awful, though.
jglowack - October 18, 2009
Your right
we should have just drawn up a play we never run at half time and then just run it over and over again. Works on the PS3, why would it not work here.
Wells - October 18, 2009
Why would I have to agree?

If I'm a Florida fan watching the UT game today...
…I’m a little worried: “Wow – they can play defense, too.”
If I’m a UT fan watching watching the Florida game, I’m a little giddy: “Wow, these guys are fantastically overrated. Please don’t lose, so we can be the ones to pop Tebow’s cherry.”

Yeah
Percy Harvin being in the NFL was a big hit to their offense.

Consider
That we’ll be playing ‘Bama in the NC because Bama is looking VERY good and will, if there’s truth to rankings, jump FL this week. Honestly, FL should be #3 after us because at least we had a tight one to a ranked team at a neutral site
Katie McBeast - October 18, 2009
Um ...
If I’m a Florida fan, I’m also thinking, “We’re gonna kill Colt if their O-line is actually that bad.”
jglowack - October 18, 2009
WOW Shocking
Was reading over some of the comments on sooners sight. Those people scare me. I remember now why I don’t like going to the game in Dallas. I understand both teams have some fans that are jerks but seriously. These guys still believe they can salvage their season and get to a BCS game and that they only lost the game because the refs gave us all the great calls.
jcbates - October 17, 2009
They are VERY entitled
They feel they DESERVE the BCS game, not that they have to EARN it like the rest of us. But hey, they also felt entitled to cheat during the land grab, too, and that’s the history they aspire to with their mascot (can you call it that?) of “Sooners.”

Virginia Tech has now lost....
We no longer need to mention them anymore..

Do the aggies suck that bad or is KSU that good.
jcbates - October 17, 2009
TT hung 60+ on KS last week right?
laxtonto - October 17, 2009
Jesus Christ, Aggies....
…WTF? Time for another coaching change?
adt2 - October 17, 2009 via mobile
Anybody have a Texas A&M stream?
I wouldn’t mind watching them get their butts kicked..

2005 was great but...
this defense has nowhere near the talent at DB or MLB (anyone forgetting Aaron Harris?).
DreadedOne - October 18, 2009

The SEC...
Only has 3 teams in the top 25 going into this weekend. Big 12 has 5 (us, Nebraska, OSU, Kansas, OU) going into this weekend. WHY/HOW is the SEC better than the Big 12? The rankings certainly don’t show that…
Katie McBeast - October 18, 2009
Kansas and OU probably should drop out of the top 25. Nebraska could barely be in it as well.
JohnsonUT - October 18, 2009
Because they have won the last 3 National Championships....
Its basically based on past years performance in bowl games. The Big10 has Ohio State who keeps getting their butt kicked in BCS games. The Big12 has Oklahoma who can’t win a BCS bowl game or any other big game outside the conference. So, until that changes for a few years, we’ll keep hearing about how great the SEC and USC is.
cj43 - October 18, 2009
Yes ...
Respect is earned. Get Texas into the MNC and beat Florida/Alabama, and things will change.
jglowack - October 18, 2009
Uhm, four of those five lost.
Wells - October 18, 2009
One play that stands out in my mind
was a specific option to the right where Colt was at the keep/pitch point. Am I over-analyzing the situation or am I dead-on?
spinmonkey - October 18, 2009
Hard to tell ...
