2010 Texas commits

Connor Wood, Second Baptist quarterback: After finally moving above .500 last week, the Eagles looked to consolidate their momentum with a victory over Northland Christian. However, Wood's team trailed 18-7 with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. Here's how the senior quarterback responded ($):

The Eagles started their ensuing drive on their own 30-yard line and on the first play of the drive Wood made what might go down as one of his top throws of the season. Wood dropped back and feeling backside pressure he rolled to his right, was able to brush off a changing Northland defender and drop the ball deep down the field on a dime to senior receiver Jordan Bilbo, who got behind the defense and raced to the end zone for a 70-yard touchdown.

Wood followed with a two-point conversion to draw within a field goal. After forcing a turnover on defense, Second Baptist got the ball back with a chance to win the game. The possession had a rocky beginning, however:

Thanks to a holding penalty the Eagles lost nearly 15 yards in field position and after a third down screen pass to Bilbo that netted a loss, Second Baptist faced a fourth and five at the 40-yard line.

On the fourth down play the Eagles called a designed quarterback sweep to the left side of the field and as he raced to the marker, Wood was able to hit the corner and get past an oncoming safety which put him in the clear and off the races for the game-winning score.

It was a 60-yard touchdown run for Wood and a game-winner. On the day, he was an efficient 18 of 25 for 253 yards and the touchdown to Bilbo and added two touchdowns and 50 yards rushing for the game. The high completion percentage is heartening for fans wondering why Wood has struggled so much in that department this season, while the poise and leadership to account for the two monumental touchdowns at the end of the game says a lot about Wood's makeup as a quarterback.

Case McCoy, Graham quarterback: After an exciting, close game against Bridgeport last week, the Steers asserted their dominance in their 45-14 victory over Sweetwater by scoring five touchdowns in the second and third quarters, led by Case McCoy's excellent performance: 17 of 26 passing for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

John Harris, Naaman Forest quarterback: Harris had 102 rushing yards on 16 carries on a day when the Rangers amassed only 165 yards of total offense in a 27-7 defeat at the hands of North Garland. The newly-converted quarterback also fumbled the ball near the goalline in the first half, costing Naaman Forest a chance at a touchdown. Harris also completed only one of five passes for nine yards on the day.

Traylon Shead, Cayuga running back: Cayuga rolled to a 66-0 victory over Cushing, as the defense held their overmatched opponent to -15 yards of offense, while Shead moved into second place on the Texas all-time rushing list with 269 yards and six touchdowns on 20 carries. Shead now trails only Kenneth Hall.

Chris Jones, Daingerfield wide receiver: Daingerfield topped Linden-Kildare 35-8, as Jones had three catches for 37 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown catch to open the scoring and carried the ball twice for 14 yards.

Darius Terrell, DeSoto wide receiver/tight end: Terrell was mostly held in check against Tyler Lee, catching five passes for only 28 yards, but DeSoto did pick up the 28-21 win.

Adrian White, DeSoto cornerback: White had four tackles in the victory.

Bryant Jackson, Sulphur Springs cornerback/wide receiver: Sulphur Springs had a bye week.

Adrian Phillips, Garland jack-of-all-trades: Garland beat Rowlett 14-5, aided by eight catches for 80 yards by Phillips, as well as eight tackles on defense and a blocked and recovered kick by the future Longhorn. He also had four carries for four yards.

Reggie Wilson, Haltom defensive end: Wilson made nine tackles in a 23-0 victory over Weatherford and also had two sacks, one for a safety.

2010 targets

Darius White, Fort Worth Dunbar wide receiver: White had four catches for 47 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown catch in a 49-14 victory over Fort Worth Southwest.

Bud Sasser, Denton Ryan wide receiver: Ryan squeaked by Little Elm, 17-14, aided by a six-yard touchdown catch by Sasser, who had four catches for 35 yards on the day. 

2011 targets

Marquis Jackson, Arlington Heights receiver: Arlington Heights had a bye week.

Miles Onyegbule, Arlington wide receiver: Onyegbule had two catches for 89 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown catch, as Arlington rolled Mansfield Summit 62-26.

Malcolm Brown, Cibolo Steele running back: Just like a previous win over Schertz-Clemens, Brown didn't need many touches to make a difference, carrying the ball four times for 114 yards and two touchdowns and catching one pass for 38 yards in a 42-7 victory over Boerne-Champion.

Aaron Green, San Antonio Madison running back: Green scored two touchdowns in a wild overtime victory over Churchhill, 21-14. Green had 95 yards rushing on the night, including a nine-yard touchdown run, but was also on the back end of an inpromptu 65-yard hook-and-lateral touchdown from Nate Askew just before halftime.

Jaxon Shipley, Brownwood wide receiver: Jordan's younger brother is now back in the lineup after missing the early part of the season with a broken collarbone. In a loss to Abilene Wylie a week and a half ago, Shipley caught three passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Brownwood faces Graham this week in a face off of two generations of McCoys and Shipleys.

Trey Metoyer, Whitehouse quarterback: Moved to quarterback this week, Metoyer gained 128 yards on the ground, including a 55-yard touchdown run, but was held to five yards in the second half of the 24-21 loss to Lindale and only completed one of five passes.

2012 prospects

Cayleb Jones, Austin wide receiver: Jones had six catches for 56 yards in a 23-17 loss to Pflugerville.
