Follow after the jump for some analysis of the changes this week...

In perhaps the biggest shake-up to the depth chart this season, it's clear that the coaching staff is intent on making major personnel changes on the offensive side of the football, most notably in the receiving corps. Listed at split end all season, Jordan Shipley has now returned to his more natural flanker position at struggling against Oklahoma to get open at the X position, pushing James Kirkendoll into a back-up position after two terrible performances in a row. After leading the team in receptions and receiving yards on Saturday, as well as scoring the only Longhorn touchdown of the day, Marquise Goodwin is now listed as the co-starter with John Chiles at the sub-B position, but is listed first, portending a sharp increase in snaps for the all-world athlete. And, making the week for many Texas fans, it finally appears that Malcolm Williams will get a chance at Shipley's vacated X position.
On the offensive line, Tray Allen moves into a co-starter relationship with Michael Huey, though Huey is still listed first, while David Snow is now solely the back up at the center position. Early in the season, Snow was listed as backing up each of three interior positions. The Longhorns need to find an effective interior combination and need to do it soon -- only Charlie Tanner appears entrenched at his left guard position.
At running back, Fozzy Whittaker and Cody Johnson remain the co-starters, with Vondrell McGee and Tre' Newton backing them up, along with DJ Monroe listed as the specialty back. Mack Brown says there is no way that he can get reps for all five, so expect McGee and Newton to see only limited action this week. Does Tre' Newton see some time as the third-down back or is he effectively buried now after injuring his neck?
On the defensive side of the ball, the status quo reigns, fitting after the dominant performance put on by Will Muschamp's charges. About the only thing worth noting is that Nolan Brewster is backing up both safety positions, ahead of Ben Wells.

damn that sucks for newton
because he’s solid
newton and fozzy could make a nice 1-2 punch
i like cody lots so maybe have a fozzy 1 and cody 2a and newton 2b
and what the heck do you do with monroe
that’s a lot of skills players
sorry to hear about chiles, he needs to work on a quicker first step
or just move to linebacker, i think he could do fairly well there
besides wouldn’t you much rather be coached by boom than dud
abcdmetrius - October 19, 2009
Newton’s an OR, just like the others. The ORs kind of make it lateral depth, I would think, although it’s true that Fozzy probably has the highest chance of being the main guy this Saturday.
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
I like all of these moves.
Sunkist - October 19, 2009
yes, yes, yes!
silky51 - October 19, 2009
Couldn't agree more.
Every move was necessary, and the correct call based on performance. Very encouraging development.

It's like Greg Davis finally figured out the internet. .nt whills
Horn Brain - October 19, 2009
Yes
He’s been dredging through thread after thread for answers to the offense’s questions.

It's an improvement, the usual method involves ritual animal sacrifice and dungeons and dragons cards

Silly LH
Dungeon and Dragons has books. Magic the Gathering has cards.
Oops, I may have said too much…

wait, we're getting buckner less snaps?!? urrrrrgh
abcdmetrius - October 19, 2009
No.
He’s still the Flex TE. Nothing’s changed for Buckner.
billyzane - October 19, 2009
According to the Statesman
EBS is “expected to see more playing time.” Our fine offensive coordinator wants to be “two dimensional” now. Link.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - October 19, 2009
Cut GD some slack, guys, please
If we’re gonna throw 65 times a game, EBS sits. If we’re gonna seek some semblance of balance, he’s gotta play. Any other “blocking” tight ends you wanna stick out there? Howard? A true (and smallish) freshman?
We don’t want Buckner trying to block DEs or 230-pound bull-rush blitzing LBers; first off, he’d get killed; second, so would the play.
edsp - October 19, 2009
Yeah but the EBS wasn't blocking as much as he was running out for passes.
Sunkist - October 19, 2009
EBS caught 2 balls
Not that he will stretch the field, but he was an option on the opposite side of the field from Ship
burnt in ny - October 19, 2009 via mobile
And take special note
DBS caught both passes thrown his way (one was a pretty tough catch), and there were no sighting of volleyball sets.

aaronlybrand - October 20, 2009
These receiver changes are full of win.
Buckner is in the same spot as the previous weeks so I think he’ll still get the same number of snaps. Goodwin and Williams seem to be getting more snaps at the expense of Kirkendoll and Chiles who have been playing terrible.
GGoffense - October 19, 2009
Fantastic development
We’ll see how things go at Mizzou, but I suspect this will have a major positive impact as it relates to the big plays this offense has had such a tough time creating.
JYarbs - October 19, 2009
I have been noticing that Barrett Mathews as the 3rd string...but he hasnt got into the game yet right?
hookemkp - October 19, 2009
Played a little in blowouts.
Also on special teams.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - October 19, 2009
Hales on the depth chart
I wonder if Hales is likely to actually see any time. I really want to see what the guy can do, because he’s really supposed to be dynamite, but you’d think they’d want to make Monroe both the specialty back and an extra receiver.
Huey’s back in three ahead of Snow. Wonder if Snow will earn a permanent job sometime this season.
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
After Snow's performance against OU...
I feel pretty confident he will be the backup center for the foreseeable future. Did you not watch the game?
cj43 - October 19, 2009
I watched the interior line flop around all day, yes. Do you really think Snow was worse than Tanner?
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
Snow just panicked with all that moving around OU did.
He’ll be fine. Non-starting status gives him a chance to rebuild some confidence. And I’m glad to see Allen get on the field. Five-stars are supposed to get on the field, right?
edsp - October 19, 2009
Tanner actually played well
He had no penalties and gave up no sacks. He has improved the most since thebeginning of the season.
The flopping is designed cut blocks aimed at the thigh of the defender. It’s a widely used technique in zone-blocking.
burnt in ny - October 19, 2009 via mobile
I’ve watched with much anger as the Shanahan-era Denver Broncos cut-blocked the Chiefs and other teams on many occasions, and it looked much different. It usually requires smaller, more agile linemen.
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
I agree that the Horns aren't doing it well
particularly Chris Hall
burnt in ny - October 20, 2009
snow was worse in this game
hookemkp - October 19, 2009
Snow was pretty bad
run Bevo run - October 19, 2009
Hales is still a little raw
After watching him at open practice in the fall, he’s quick and he’s a good route runner, but needs to be more aware of his surroundings and develop better hands before he starts getting game-time with the offense. He’s had a reception or two this year (UTEP?), if memory serves me correct, but he’s being overshadowed by a reasonably deep (and reorganized, thank Bevo) receiver corps at present. This year spent as a backup will probably do him some good.
The Mack Attack - October 19, 2009
Caught a pass late against CU.
Went for two yards from GG.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - October 19, 2009
Also has dropped a couple of passes from GG
FWIW

2Cor12:9 - October 19, 2009
At least we know the coaches realize that something has to be done.
And at least we didn’t have to lose to make it happen.
Hopefully, this isn’t just reshuffling the deckchairs on the Titanic, as it was with the running back flavor of the week. While I think all of these offensive lineup changes are good ones, I also think that the problem goes deeper systemically than just who’s lining up where and getting the majority of the snaps. Hopefully, these changes are not an end in themselves, but rather portend a dedication to making substantive systemic changes on the offensive side of the ball. If not, then this is likely no different than the random rotation of RBs we had listed #1 throughout the year.
billyzane - October 19, 2009
+1 BZ
I really have been looking forward to this lineup all year, outside of Goodwin who sprinted on the scene. Welcomed addition no less, but to have Buckner, Shipley, and Williams on the field at the same time will prove deadly. They need to stay with it and form a unit. I can’t say it enough. This group needs to gel and gel quickly going into Stillwater and onward. Let’s start in Mizzou. Big game for Williams last year, so I hope this isn’t just another situational adjsutment by GD but proves to be the winning ticket.
orangetower - October 19, 2009
I like this combo the best
With Shipley on the opposite side of Williams, Williams will have a lot of single coverage or will pull a safety to that side. He has chemistry with Colt, as witnessed by his catches (one out of bounds) of passes to his back sboulder. Ship and Goodwin are a powerful pair who have both qkckness and speed. They have numerous routes they can run off each other and either can deliver on the bubble screen

This also fits well
When (if?) Collins comes back next year.
Horncasting - October 19, 2009
like the moves...
So is the Tray Allen because Huey dinged up or did he play really well against OU?
pfc - October 19, 2009
Mason Walters...
Is he still hurt or is he getting red shirted now?
pfc - October 19, 2009
Walters
I believe is still suffering from a stress fracture in his foot. I think the coaches want to get him some work later in the year but he’s probably looking more and more like a redshirt as each week goes by and he can’t play. That’s assuming that he can’t play this week and I don’t think there has been an announcement about that unless Mack said something at his presser. 40AS will have an update this evening about the injuries.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - October 19, 2009
I had followed the participation reports pretty closely earlier in the season to keep track of which freshmen had eliminated the chances of a redshirt, but I haven’t lately. Did Walters play in a game yet? Obviously he could push for a med-RS anyway on the basis of his injury.
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
ULM
He played during Gilbert’s drive in the ULM game that resulted in the touchdown on the quarterback draw. In fact, I believe Walters aggravated his previous injury on that play.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - October 19, 2009
I’m a little rusty on my med-RS rules, but it appears that Walters could almost certainly get this season to count as a redshirt season if he applied. I do not believe that he’d be able to take a subsequent redshirt year—that is, have this year as a medical redshirt season, and then have a regular redshirt season to use in some future season.
burntorangehorn - October 19, 2009
Believe you are correct
Based on the small % of plays Walters played in this year.
Horncasting - October 19, 2009
thanks
appreciate the 411
pfc - October 19, 2009
Any update on Vaccaro?
He was actually listed on the depth chart at S at one point earlier this season.
Horncasting - October 19, 2009
Read short route first
Ship should get a lot more short routes now. This will really help Colt who naturally often looks for Ship first. This should help the timing of short routes a bunch and improve the horns ability to grind 1st downs.
This should also improve blocking, since Goodwin blocks better than Kirk and Malcolm blocks better than Chiles.
It will also be natural for Ship to take Goodwin under his wing.
None of these changes is surprising. It is also not surprising that Greg Smith is getting more snaps. If you want to run, a real TE helps. Did Greg have any dropped passes?
Kafka - October 19, 2009
re: ebs
he did have some missed blocks fwiw.
vy til i die - October 19, 2009
Good to see we are three deep at all kicking positions
Never know when a soccer game will break out
Caradoc - October 19, 2009
The Cody Quandry
He best fits the physical skill sets and talents of the offensive line – but the offensive scheme will not be altered to maximize the effectiveness of the offensive line. Go figure.
I would love to marry a bruising OL + RB with this defense and just chuck this horizontal concoction.
realmccoy - October 19, 2009
Yeah, put Benson behind
Scott and Blaylock with Will Matthews at FB . . . that’d probably win you a Rose Bowl.

I haven’t seen an offensive lineman singlehandedly do so much damage to his team since watching Flozell Adams every Sunday.
