Right now it is a Monet sky and a beautiful burnt orange sunset here in Central Texas, a tremendous fall evening. The weather isn't the game we are considering, as great as it may be.
I'd bet the Horns have planned the Missouri and OSU games as a two-fer. I intuit that the plan was to run it up the first half, nail down what we could in the third quarter and get some rest for the starters on both sides of the ball. And, as a special benefit, get a complete quarter of playing time for subs to build depth for the stretch run as well as next year.
Any complaints about the second half need to be couched in terms of the plan. The plan for the second half seemed to be to smother the Tigers and reveal as little as possible to OSU. For the third week in a row, it will be a short week again for practice and with travel, so conservation of energy is the real name of the game.
Sure, running up the score could have been great for the style points and palaver for the talkin' heads. The Horns don't need frickin's style points - the SEC propaganda machine, ABC and ESPN would just chew them up anyway - so screw 'em. What the Longhorns need is a critical victory in Stillwater. This falls under the cliched 'must have' win.

Oklahoma State is playing well on all levels, from the QB, Zac Robinson, to the newly minted receivers and RBs, and their defense is showing up. There will be greater analysis later this week; the point now is that this can be a lethal team.
I suspect last year's OSU game, which turned into a dogfight in the second half, and the later showing at Tech in the first half caused a rethinking of how to approach this year's three-game road run. Dallas is not really a road-match, but going on the road the next two weeks can create a certain weariness, a loss of energy and attention, which this Texas team just cannot afford.
The Missouri game went pretty much the way you'd want to get your team some rest. Next weekend the Horns will probably need four quarters of maximum effort. And with them coming home to Central Florida, they can afford the all out effort. But they couldn't last night at Columbia.
So when you hear the press moaning and groaning about the second half showing, a miserable six points, no TDs, an INT, etc. etc. etc., it's all just grandiose bullshit. Pay no attention to those who get paid to fill space and not to win football games.
When anything is turning into a popularity contest, it is quality which gets the shaft. That's great if you like buying used movies; the crap movies are overpriced and the good stuff is generally underpriced.
The later in this season it gets, the more we will see some desperate efforts against us. But the hard truth is going to be that no one is going to want to play us at the end of the year. We're bad news and, as far as I'm concerned, we can stay bad news. The Longhorns are getting better every game. Muschamp's defense is becoming a killer.
To those other voices out there, say what you want to say now, say it loud, 'cause we gonna whip your ass when the time comes. And no amount of talk is going to make any difference.
That is all.

Goon Squad.....
Coming to get ya Zac!
Dawnpatrol - October 25, 2009
Heh, heh. Some evenings I feel particularly homerish.
This was for us. Share a little slobber with the Goon Squad.

I was out last night . . . saw the game after midnight
minus most of the gabby talkers that ABC overpays to tell us what’s happening. Anybody listen to UT network? Anything on Deon Beasley?
Seemed to me he started (I gather were were in the nickel), but that means either Curtis of Chykie DIDN’T start (though both played a lot). Just curious. Glad Deon finally got a chance.

Started over Chykie.

Deon New and Improved
Gotta give credit to Akina and Will on this guy. I thought he was softer than the Sta Puff Marshallow Man and he has really improved his physical play.

Anyone watch the remainder of the Mizzou game?
I’m curious how many snaps the backups got on defense, and how they looked.
burntorangehorn - October 25, 2009
There were 30 plays.
Texas D gave up 59 yards on 12 plays, with Mizzou getting three first downs in their first 6-play series before Chykie intercepted the ball. The second series was three and out with a punt. On the third Blake Gideon intercepted after two plays.
The offense had 18 plays for 55 yards and got a FG after a 7-play 27-yard drive on their first series to make the final 41-7.
So both back-up teams got some sustained action, about three series each (Texas punted to start the fourth and Missouri had a game-ending play of two-yards). But that certainly was enough to perk up the kids who seldom get to see the field in a Big 12 game. Practice should be fun this week. Lotta film, a lot of involvement, a lot of excitement.
GG was 0-for-3 in passing, but he didn’t attempt anything long.

After watching the Alabama and Florida game
Call me crazy but I think Texas as of today is the best team in the nation. The defence looks dominating and the offense is finally clicking. At this stage we are no longer going to just play other teams… We are going to dominate them.
And Mushcamp has shown why he is a fitting coach to be… He is fabulous. I just love our defense…
I mean this is a staggering statistic. No big 12 QB that has started a games against the Texas defense finished the game. Taylor Potts, Cody Hawkins, Sam Bradford and Blaine Gabbert.
They either got hit too hard or played so poorly that they were not in the game when it ended…
Those delayed blitzes and keeping the offences guessing is working

Not quite true
Potts finished the game. But he got hit pretty hard, too.
TheElusiveShadow - October 25, 2009
I'm pretty sure we can all agree
Although Potts played every snap in the Texas game, he was hit so hard he was numb for two weeks and did not realize he was hurt until halfway through the New Mexico game.

Life ain't been normal since then, that's for sure. nt
whills - October 26, 2009
yeah that's right
Still have the recording of the Tech game and looked up and yeah he finished the game. Let me rephrase that.. 3 of the 4 big 12 QBs that have played against Texas Defense have not finished the game :)
He did get hit pretty hard…. I just went to that spot and re-enjoyed the moment :)

Style points dead for now
Despite Musburger et al rantings, style points are insignificant at this point in the season for our purposes. Mack iterated that last week. As long as the top three all control their bowl futures you can just sit back and summarily dismiss the hype (and at the same time watch last year’s style points ‘winner’ suffer from the effects of piling on points last year at the expense of getting Landry Jones some PT).
On a side note Fright Night will be interesting from an offensive perspective. The offense executed against UM but a large part of that success was due to the DB’s playing so far off Shipley and company (one of the reasons McCoy is able to put up the types of numbers he puts up against UM). I doubt that Okie lite will play that far off the receivers after watching films from last week. It will be interesting to see how the revamped receiving corps performs when the defense attempts to limit the short routes as other opponents have done.

Psyche
The roster change up will keep opposing defenses guessing. With our running game moving into up tempo mode, defenses will be hard pressed to play too much man up coverage schemes. Our first 3 drives Saturday had a nice mix of run and pass that forced the Tigers into more zone coverage. Our season is inching ever closer to game, set, match.

Great line
So when you hear the press moaning and groaning about the second half showing, a miserable six points, no TDs, an INT, etc. etc. etc., it’s all just grandiose bullshit. Pay no attention to those who get paid to fill space and not to win football games.
Just a great line, look forward to the more “in depth” preview.

Kudos To Coaches on Mizzou
The focus that these kids had on the road after that war in the RRS was amazing. WOW.
