I don't know if this is even a good situation for him
What has changed? Fisher is still the Jim Tressel of the NFL. The defense is worse, their receivers are only a little better than what Vince had before, their O-line is not as good as advertised, and the playcalling has been curious. I of course hope he succeeds, but it is very likely that he simply goes out with a sucky team and they still stay sucky, and he’s going to be booed and receive all sorts of media hate for not saving a season that is already in the tank.
He is certainly not in a position to succeed this year
It seems almost like he’s being put in a position to be thrown under the bus eventually by Jeff Fisher because the owner forced him into the move. They won last year because of their defense and run game. Now that they’ve lost the defense it’s quite clear their lack of attention to the WR corps over the last few years is just killing them.
there are about 7-8 very good/great qb’s in the league, and the rest kinda stink, that is the only reason people arent laughing him outta the nfl. yes, the man did good a couple of years ago, but ill be darned if he makes it 2 more years professionally. i love the man, but jeez, i thought he would be better in the nfl than this. at least hes better than jarmarcus… barely
1) He’s had no support on the offense
2) The offensive playcalling has been horrible
3) 1 & 2 helped create some confidence/mental issues
I’m not saying you’re wrong. I truly want him to succeed and prove his doubters wrong. But at some point, in order for him to succeed, he needs to be provided with enough weapons for success.
My friends, it’s not all on Vince. At the same time, Peyton Manning he is not. Right now, he’s not even Kyle Orton, who is winning a lot these days. Watching those clips above it’s apparent he can make throws and dodge some tackles, but defenses got wise and adjusted by year 2. He needs to show marked improvement in making his reads, putting the ball in the right place and breaking down defenses.
That said, the Tressel to Fisher comparison couldn’t be better. It seems more obvious every week that Fisher was not the one who pulled the trigger on drafting Vince. This team’s offense just isn’t one that Vince can thrive in. Is there one he can thrive in at the pro-level? I’m not sure, but I’d like to find out by seeing a team give him a chance that has a creative mind calling the shots on offense and designing plays. Also, it’d be nice for him to have one elite WR who will catch the ball that’s thrown to him. Vince’s throws aren’t that great, but if he had a good receiver that could go up and make the difficult catch, who knows? Maybe his confidence spikes, his passes get better.
With everything in me I hope he succeeds. I will never, ever stop rooting for Vince Young.
If you look at those videos you see what type of play calling makes VY successful, roll him out left or right, give him medium to short crossing routs and if it breaks down he can run. the games I saw him in in pre-season they tried to make him stay in the pocket and read three or four routes and he’s just NOT that kind of QB. you can’t make him one…a smart OC would realize that and run the kind of offense that works for him…heck if someone was willing to go with the Wild Cat for a team without a QB they could trust and put it all in the hands of their RB’s why can’t they dust off the plays that worked back then for VY and run them some more? Couldn’t hurt could it? I’m starting Scafie as my fantasy TE this weekend just to prove it IS possible!!! ;-)
And before you cite their defense, which admittedly was a big part of their wins his second year, he went 9-4 his first year after they started horrendously without him playing.
It’s really a shame to see the organization has done nothing but a horrible job to build around VY and let him to be a successful QB. Regardless, I will always support VY. He has talent and a very good football player not just on the field but off the field as well. I still hate the fact that Reggie Bush has stole that Heisman from VY.
Anyway, I’m glad that he got another chance to be a starting QB again. I have faith in VY and he will lead the Titans to beat Jaguars this Sunday.
all i have to say is take away jeff saturday and the entire colts line, then change the offense to a wildcat and let peyton try and be successful! im not saying vy is on peyton’s level, but all of the great qb’s are in an offense thats plays to their abilites, so let vy get an offense simular to what he had at UT and i promise at least one superbowl in 3years(take that to the bank and cash it!).
He has confidence issues that will prevent him from ever being a great QB in the NFL. Run the zone read in the NFL and he will be injured after 4 games. He ran a 4.5 at the combine. In college he was a better athlete than anyone he saw on defense. not so in the NFL. Watching his games makes me think his WRs hate him. They drop more catchable passes from him than from any QB I’ve seen.
..on the last sentence. It does SEEM like that, but in truth, they’re just not good, b/c they do that w/ Collins sometimes. I hope Britt continues to develop, but he might have to rely on Scaife, and C. Johnson.
You post Vince Young in the pros videos and leave out “Vince vs. Hoge”? I still get 5 comments on it a week about how Vince sucks and Hoge was right. I agree with Crimson Frog; you can’t put Vince in a win or lose situation without having him outperform everyone’s expectations. Vince just wins.
I wonder whether Adams is making Fisher start Young now so he will fail. Then when the Titans trade him away, they can say to their fans that he had his chance.
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but....
Pacman Jones looked pretty good, too.

The general consensus is that...
No, it’s not a good situation. It’s terrible in fact. But hey, freedom is just another word for nothin’ left to lose.

Yes, but the question is
How much of this is due to circumstance?
1) He’s had no support on the offense
2) The offensive playcalling has been horrible
3) 1 & 2 helped create some confidence/mental issues
I’m not saying you’re wrong. I truly want him to succeed and prove his doubters wrong. But at some point, in order for him to succeed, he needs to be provided with enough weapons for success.

It's a little of both...

Caradoc - October 30, 2009
you might be on the right track
VY has a $4.2 million bonus coming up in march.
if he tanks Adams saves the dough and sends him kicking stones,
if he plays well and the titans win about 10,000 butts in the stands for the last games will cover the bonus.
