Just a quick observation here. Marquis Maze reminds me an awful lot of Quan Cosby; it's downright eerie.
The more you watch the Crimson Tide passing attack, the more you see how much it's predicated on short and intermediate timing routes that are often opened up nicely off play action and misdirection, and which rely on sure-handed receivers running crisp routes with limited big play potential but move the chains and keep the defense honest.

Maze
has probably been the most consistent WR we have as far as hands go.

Maze..
….is the reason our passing game works at all. Peek has been very consistent as well, but with Julio hitting a sophomore slump, Maze has been our best receiver bar none.

Maze
Is the perfect complement to Julio I think… all speed while Julio is more of a “power” receiver.

and both of them block exceedingly well on running plays.

Exactly. If you remember the South Carolina game, they did perhaps their best job of the season. This came on a day when McElory was terrible and I think both guys maybe had 1-2 catches between them. I know Julio had nothing that day.

PB: Great reads.
I apologize up front for getting off track
-—- but you SEC guys, Bama guys: How was the SEC this season? Rippingly strong, hit-and-miss, extremely balanced, how would you describe it? Ten bowl teams, 11 if Mississippi State beats either LSU or Houston (close defeats). From way out here, Arkansas seemed improved but overmatched . . . Auburn up and down . . . Georgia really off its usual excellence . . . Tennessee one-dimensional . . . SC the usual win one, lose one (whatever happened to Coach’s offensive strength?).
Thanks.

the usual...
strikes and gutters, ups and downs.
kleph - December 23, 2009
Even eerier...
Sophomore stats for both players:
Cosby – 45 Rec, 525 Yards, 2 TD.
Maze – 30 Rec, 519 Yards, 2 TD.
If Maze can now produce in his Junior year like Cosby did, Bama’s offense will be electric.

Not trying to put down the Big 12
But Arkansas absolutely destroyed Texas A&M. That being said, outside of the top 2, the SEC was remarkably balanced.
REG233710 - December 23, 2009
Yes they did
and we thank them for that.

No thanking Arkansas for anything, pig douches

Looking at the Alabama pass attack one thing is clear
like it was pointed out it is not a big play attack. One of the reasons they have so few TD’s is not a lot of TD passes.
PB is right on the mark, it’s ball control, move the chains and keep the defense honest.
That said, the way to nullify Alabama’s passing game is bring the secondary up close, have the corners bump the receivers hard coming off the line, play man coverage and rush 6 or 7. Don’t let McElroy time to set up or the receivers time to run their patterns.
The mistake is to rush 3-4 and sit back in zone and let them pick the secondary apart. If Alabama is running and passing underneath, do what Nebraska did to us and crowd the first12 yards and at all cost harass the passer.
