It is official. The Horns are in.

As expected, it will be Texas vs. Alabama playing for the national championship, Jan. 7 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

It’s the second trip for Texas to a BCS title game, and the Longhorns’ fourth BCS bowl game in the last six years. It’s also going to be the third time in the last six years that Texas will end its season at the Rose Bowl.

Mack Brown never wants to see Ndamukong Suh again.

"We just couldn't handle him," Brown said. "I tried to find him to wish him good luck in the NFL, because I don't want to see him again."

Barking Carnival has the good, the bad and the ugly- Texas & Nebraska.

We avoided BCS chaos.

All is said and done now, and an often-exasperating season gave us one last exhilarating Saturday to remember. But with Texas' win, what seemed like the best ever hope for an outcome that forced substantive changes was lost. And it would be hard to not take that as a loss tonight, unless you're wearing burnt orange.

SB Nation's Team Speed Kills wants TCU and Alabama in the title game. It seems Texas is not a talented enough opponent.

If I were to right this post from an SEC fan's perspective alone, it would be a full-fledged campaign pitch for Texas to play in Pasadena next month. I said it to someone and so I'll make it public: If that Texas team defeats Alabama, I will sing "Texas Fight" on the season-ending edition of Team Speed Kills Now. The easiest way to bring another crystal football to the SEC is to allow Texas into the national championship game. They haven't played the second-best football in the country and don't deserve to play in Pasadena. TCU does.

I am writing this under no delusions. I know that it's unlikely that anyone with any power will read this or change their vote because of it. But I have to do it anyway in the hopes that maybe, somehow it will reach the ears of someone in power. Because to be an intellectually honest opponent of a playoff, I have to push for as fair a settlement of the season as I can. And it will be a travesty if Texas plays ahead of TCU because they've been ranked higher than TCU.

Anger management issues must be in the Pelini DNA. One more Pelini brother was upset Saturday night.

Another Pelini brother, Vince, got in on the act — "They're sick," he said, shaking his head and adding, "Zero-zero on the clock" — before the Cornhuskers coach resurfaced.

"Get Dan Beebe!" he shrieked, asking for the Big 12 commissioner.

The controversy continues.

Nothing seems right to Dennis Dodd.

It just doesn't feel right, not when the two happiest men in college football Sunday were Dan Beebe and Walt Anderson.

It doesn't feel right because the Big 12 commissioner (Beebe) and his supervisor of officials (Anderson) were just as much a part of Saturday's furious finish to the season as was the football.

It doesn't feel right because half of the BCS title-game matchup was decided from the video replay booth. The commish and his supervisor had to put the final stamp of approval on Texas' 13-12 non-loss over Nebraska. Yeah, they got it right even after Texas almost got it unforgivably wrong.

Many of you saw it and you still can't believe it.

The Game

People in Baton Rouge are still a little bitter about the loss of Nick Saban.

Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy out-Tebowed Tim Tebow.

Superman wore a different-colored cape Saturday. Greg McElroy "out-Tebowed" Tim Tebow.

Need a midseason promise? McElroy delivered on his. Need a remarkably efficient passing game? McElroy did it. Need some nifty runs? McElroy produced them. Need some emotion? McElroy posed like a pro wrestler.

Alabama was just too much for Florida.

Nick Saban kept saying Alabama’s best game was still out there. He said it over and over as the season progressed.

Finally, the Crimson Tide delivered that "best" game against Florida on Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game. The execution of a terrific game plan on offense delivered a 32-13 victory and a berth in the national championship game.

The Sooners will play Stanford in the Sun Bowl.

The Stanford football team will face Oklahoma in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 31, the school announced Sunday.

Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.

The Aggies will play Georgia in the Independence Bowl.

Texas A&M University has accepted an invitation from the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl to play the University of Georgia in the 2009 bowl matchup to be played Monday, Dec. 28 with kick scheduled for 4 p.m. (central) in Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

Oklahoma State will play Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl.

Both Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy were quarterbacks for the Cowboys and Nutt was wide receivers coach during Gundy's playing days. They're familiar with each other and ready to get reacquainted in the new year.

"My first memory of Mike Gundy was right in the very first two-a-days we noticed a guy who was pretty confident stepping into that huddle," Nutt said. "Once he got a chance as a true freshman – he took over about midway through – we knew we wanted one person in that huddle and it was Mike Gundy."

Texas Tech will play Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

Missouri will play Navy in the Texas Bowl.

Sporting News has Turner Gill as the leading candidate to replace Mark Mangino at Kansas.

Openrange_medium

Just one second ruined the hopes of the Bearcats and the Horned Frogs.

It's amazing how so many feelings for so many fans in Texas can change with one second.

When Colt McCoy's pass crossed the Nebraska sidelines, landing on the railing by one of the ground-level suites, it appeared Texas' dreams of a national title were over. At the same time, it looked like TCU's Horned Frogs had turned into championship princes, complete with a purple tint.

Bill Hancock loves his job as the BCS director.

Cant stand the TCU lovefest

Congrats TCU, you beat BYU (overrated), Utah (overrated) and a mediocre Clemson team. Because your wins are SOO much better than ours, you deserve to go to the National Title Game

Team Speed Kills guy
If I were to right this post from an SEC fan’s perspective alone

I like the way he undermines the credibility of whatever he wrote after this with the egregious “right/write” error.

Maybe he actually meant right.
My reaction to TSK guy...

making a promise to do something should Texas win is about the same as my reaction to Meredith Baxter Birney (mom from Family Ties) coming out of the closet…please call me when you matter because nobody gives a sh*t who or what you’re trying to #*$&.

2005 vs. 2009

It’s funny how we’ve been comparing this season to VY’s championship season all year long, and it actually turns out to be almost EXACTLY like it. (Other than the fact that there are three other undefeated teams).
You have to love the role of an underdog — even though 2009 version would be more scrutinized. The team will be motivated to “prove” that they belong in the championship game. (Most likely, and unfortunately, Colt will need to prove again that he, not the RB from other team, deserved the Heisman… just like VY) While Colt is not VY, they are both winners. I hope that we prove that 2009 is truly like 2005 come January 7.
Hook’em Horns.

Colt proved on Saturday

that he doesn’t deserve the Heisman.

You just proved...

That you are an aggie…. Champions and Heisman winners find a way to win even on bad days. Enjoy the v100 bowl.

Dude Beergut....

I’m sure you’ve been told this before, but worry about your own team. For the life of me I can’t understand why the majority of Texas A&m fans just won’t grasp this concept. You guys involve yourself WAY too much with what goes on here in Austin.

You've got it all wrong. Even as a Texas fan, I think that the offensive line letting Suh in 4.5 times for sacks and 7 times for tackles for loss put a huge hit on Colt's Heisman campaign. After the performance that Suh put on, It's hard not to agree.
I don't care about the Heisman

First off.. Good Stuff Dime as always.. We do not say this often enough, but your daily roundup is always a great start to my day…

Back to the Heisman discussion…
I hope that Colt does not win it. In the last 12 years the only player who has won a Heisman and won the National Championship has been Matt Linard for USC winning the 2004 National Championship. A heisman is a distraction and creates issues not only for the player in question but also for the rest of the team. Games are won by Teams and not by a single player, as we saw on saturday night..

what about last thursday...?

Or hell, look at his entire career.

the award isn’t about recency, you have to be able to expand your mind beyond one slice of the pie…

Beergut - Who "deserves" the Heisman this year?

Is it just an amazing coincidence that the player most “deserving” of the Heisman, out of all the players and teams in college football, was a USC player three out of four years in recent history?

Get over yourself and get over the award.

I know Mark Ingram will win it and thats fine

Look Mark Ingram played great for Alabama, and his whole team played to put him on the highlight reel. And I am fine with that. A heisman is a distraction and is never an indicator of how good the player is going to be at the next level. All I want is for Colt to spend the next month practicing not going to banquets and media blitzs

Oh beergut...

The Heisman will in all likelihood go to mark ingram because Heisman voters are morons with no long term memory. Much like Reggie Bush looking fierce against Fresno State and Vince looking human against your aggros, the award is decided on how you played the last game.

You may not know this, what with the nursing your wounds and all from Colts 475 yard day against your beloved farmhands, but Mark Ingram crapped the bed against Auburn to the tune of <50 yards and a noticeable absence on the game winning drive. Heisman voters won’t remember that, and I’m assuming you didn’t either. Maybe you should be one of those Heisman voters too, no?

The problem with what you are saying is...

Beergut doesn’t think Ingram should get the Heisman either, he is making the case for Suh.

in that case...

he’s doing his usual piss-poor job of making a valid argument…

If he thinks Suh should win – which for the record, I do too – saying Colt “proved” he didn’t deserve it based on one game… well, that’s not really compelling. Basically all the candidates had at least one of those games which “proved” they didn’t deserve it.

I would be happy if Suh won it, I’d be fine with either Gerhard or Spiller. But Ingram or Tebow don’t deserve it even as much as Colt.

you might be interested in

this.

yeah..

…but that would mean we would have to CARE about what an aggie says so much so that we would visit that barren site just to hear his aggie logic. Thanks but no thanks rBr.

I have a general rule

If I care enough to criticize it, I need to care enough to be told I am wrong

Gerhard gets my vote

followed by Suh, then Spiller

really?

What did Alabama’s RB do against Auburn that was worthy of a heisman?

EXACTLY like 2005?

….so where is the 70-3?

You know his post actually read "almost EXACTLY like it"
The score wasn't too far off from being 7-3

Which is almost like 70-3

I've been trying to find words to describe Texas' performance Saturday...

but I think I’m just gonna defer to coach Mora’s analysis. Everything except the part about them scoring on us is so true.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tie0tz7jGDI

Nice. Fits well with “All I want for Christmas” playing in the other window, per a 5-yr-old request.

Heisman

I dont want Colt to win it..whoever wins the Heisman doesn’t win the NC..

Except Matt Leinart

Who won the Heisman and then proceeded to smoke OU for 332 yards to win the NC in 2004

Is it so wrong to call it a "second" chance?
You know, its funny

Last year, a rule kept us out of the national championship. This year, a rule let us kick the winning field goal to get to the MNC. Get over what happened, we had too last year.

Well, we got our one second and one foot back. So there is some justice. nt
Forde leaves Tebow and Colt off his Heisman Ballot

Votes Suh #1

I think it would be a nice change of pace for a defender to get the heisman.
I would like for Colt to win....

…. but can’t complain if Suh does.

Not bad

Ingram, McCoy, and Tebow each took turns sabatoging their own campaigns over the past week or two. I think Gerhart and Suh would be two of my top three right now. McCoy would probably be the other.

Here's My Take

The game plan against NU cost Colt the Heisman. Oddly enough I think the idea was to put the game on Colts shoulders and let him carry us. The problem with this is that by the end of the 1st quarter the adjustment should have been made to power run the ball. I thought surely we would adjust for the 2nd half. Either GD or Mack had a differnet view.

The NU strategy of putting 7 D-backs in the game was working. We had several runs of 4+ yards and I felt we could have done it all night until NU had to break down with linebackers at which point the play action pass could be instituted. Ironic as it sounds, I think putting this game on Colts shoulders knocked the Heisman off of them.

Team Speed Kills guys are idiots...

Someone should post this over there.

First of all… he has our score against Missouri incorrect. It was 41-7 not 31-7

Secondly… he does this analysis on Sagarin’s poll and says that TCU is ahead of Texas.

He conveniently left Bama out of that discussion. if you include Bama…. Their score comes to 12846. LESS THAN BOTH TCU & Texas. So by his very own metric, the game should be TX versus TCU and not Bama.

Bama’s total offense was 413 and total defense was 241. The differential is 172 * the sagarin score gives you 12846 which IS LESS than 13296 for TX and 15833 for TCU.

This metric is also flawed because Sagarin has had a crappy system this year. He STILL has 1AA Villanova ahead of Nebraska for pete’s sake.

Finally, and this should put all this nonsense to rest. Texas has played the aggregate 52nd best schedule according to all the comps. TCU has played the 80th. Bama has played the 30th. So Texas is much closer to Bama’s SOS than TCU is to playing Texas’s. Of course margin of victory is TCU #1. (barely) then Texas and then Bama. Maybe that’s due to the SOS???

There's really nothing like the SEC echo chamber, is there?
Hello....hello....ello...
Not to mention that "mathematical" formula, is completely random

Which “clearly” as he puts it, shows absolutely nothing.

Hey look, I took two stats and multiplied them together because the results agree with my argument!

You mean that a team with a harder schedule has a lower differential between their offensive and defensive production? Genius!! Let’s take random numbers that represent those two catagories and multiply them together…. OMG TCU’s average strength of net yards per game are higher! It’s the kewlest stat in foosball!

Wow, just wow.

Pellini’s gripes take away from an absolutely dominating game by Suh. Everyone gripes at the refs, but if you take replay away, Nebraska has 3 less points and the endgame is anticlimactic. (4th down review anyone?) You can’t cherry pick the reviews. And how in the world does there super-duper kicker kick it out of bounds on the 2nd most important kick of his life??? Sour grapes indeed.

And on of my favorite parts of the post…. “The Sooners will play Stanford in the Sun Bowl.” Have fun in El Paso boys!!!

the kick blown dead was garbage

The kick that the ref blew dead on the one was a bad call that really hurt Texas’ chance of putting a drive together.

But didn't we march 60+ yards regardless?
We did

Give Goodwin the benefit of the doubt that he returns the kick to the 20. That puts us in FG range on that 60 yard drive.

Officials were bad on both sides. That was the worst of all the calls.

I think it was dumb when...

He lost possession of the ball so it was free, then he gets down, then goes to pick up the ball, but it’d already been blown dead. That was one that annoyed me.

It is interesting

that nobody is talking about the bogus calls earlier in the game that went against Texas…

- The re-spotting of the ball on NU 4th down conversion… it may have ultimately been the correct spot, but I sure didn’t see any indisputable video evidence to suggest that it was.

- The phantom chop block call against Texas where there didn’t appear to be any contact made

- The Goodwin KO return muff that was called down at the 1 when he never caught the ball. And because they blew the play dead it wouldn’t have accomplished anything to challenge the call.

- not to mention a few timeclock issues

FWIW a solid majority of the NU fans’ comments I’ve seen have been in agreement that the 1-second call at the end was correct, and they expressed disappointment at the behavior of the NU coaches. They really are a classy group of fans.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

When the game started, there was a touchback. No time runs off the clock. The first play from scrimmage is a quick hit to Kirkendall on the right side that he drops. 6 seconds run off the clock, 3 after the ball hits the turf. But wait, there was a flag for a false start. 1st and 15. Shouldn’t the game clock be reset back to 15 minutes? I think it should have been, but it wasn’t. Texas could have used that six seconds right before halftime to kick a fieldgoal. There were many clock issues throughout the night. By rule, shouldn’t the clock be stopped when the ball hits the turf immediately?

That's one of my biggest pet peeves with football

You’d think they’d be able to find a moron who could start and stop the clock with relative accuracy. It’s like one has to be a chimpanzee to run the scoreboard.

TCU

If TCU played in the Big 12, they would’ve lost 2-3 games this year. Texas, and ou would beat them (even on a down ou year). a&m, OSU, and Nebraska could all beat them as well (close games).

Even if Texas did lose, TCU still would’ve got jumped by UC. Its funny how TCU is never in the discussion when they schedule Texas and ou.

nah, see 2005, tcu beats ou at home
Too bad the remainder of their schedule was cupcake.

TCU needs to make a move out of that conference to have any legitimacy IMO.

GD blocking scheme vs Nebraska = FAIL

I don't think I have ever seen a worse performance by a Texas O line
I put 3-4 of those sacks on Colt for holding the ball too long.
45+ years of Texas football here

and I have never seen anything so horrific. GD’s game plan did not stand a chance.

Colt

you don’t think any of the sacks were Colt’s fault? or good coverage?

Final Coaches Poll Ballot..

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-final-coaches-ballots.htm

Now you can see how each coach voted.

Am I seeing things?

Pelini voted us #1?

I wonder...

…if he was ashamed to do it?

That's actually kind of classy

I appreciate the compliment to our game last night.

F*** him

after calling us cheaters, I don’t want his vote. He can leave us out of the top 25 for all I care.

He didn’t call you cheaters. He’s an emotional guy who was wrapped up in the emotion of the game and was bitching about the officiating. There were piss poor calls on both sides. The PI call that was obviously uncatchable, the downed kickoff that wasn’t downed, the lack of holding calls on both teams.

Congrats Longhorns on a Big XII championship, beat the Tide and see you next year, in Lincoln…

PS: I wrote a rather disparaging comment immediately after the game on Saturday that I’d like to apologize for, I’m sorry.

It happens. I’m sure a few of us took Suh’s name in vain several times Saturday night. And Pelini’s, both Pelinis, after the game.

Suh deserves every award. He is…mere words cannot describe the guy. I’ll be the first to start a send-off fund to the NFL for the guy. Colt McCoy may be contributor number two.

Thank you guys for being so cool in our pre-game chatter. Best of luck in the Holiday Bowl against Arizona.

Beat the hell out of Stoops Lite.

So who was he calling cheaters

when he was heard screaming “cheaters” after the game? Did he see the TV show come on and was really excited about it?

I think he must have calmed down

and actually seen the play. He needs anger management, definitely, but maybe he can actually be reasonable and rational once he cools off.

Probably talked to Osborne about it

As Osborne said, he has had it go both ways in his time.

Patterson is a shameless homer

Voting TCU #2 and Cincy #6 in a shameless attempt to push his team in over Cincy.

can you really blame him though?

if there had been any chance Mack could’ve pushed us into it last year, as close as things were, we’d be thrilled to have had the chance.

All balances out

Brian Kelly voted Cincy #1 and TCU #4. Not quite as bad, but has the same stink to it.

While I disagree with it

Its not that unreasonable. 6 other coaches voted Cinci the same or worse, and he also wasnt alone with TCU at #2.

If you want shameless homers, look at Harbaugh or Stockstill.

Or Bob Stoops

One of only two coaches to rank the Sooners!

And he ranked Tech Too

A lot of coaches were conference heavy. Pinkel, Richt and Miles I noticed.

Stockstill is my favorite out of whack vote though.

Alot of coaches also put their team as #25

No shame in that imo either.

I don't blame him

It’s just so obvious and made me lol

Speaks volumes that a vast majority of coaches put Texas #2..

as well as being a rock solid #2 in the Harris Poll

The “Texas may not belong” in the MNC angle from the media needs to go.

They always look for something to stir shit up. That’s why I never really read anything the media has to say (unless directed from here).

Unfortunately for you, the BDR motto is We don’t filter the crap that is out there, we just link to it… so you may have to read a lot of the same drivel now until January 7. Sorry. :-)

Some advice: if you see anything written by Pete Flutak, just skip it.

Fortunately for me

You’re great at what you do. So if you link it and give enough in your block quotes, I don’t necessarily have to click on the link. And it can’t be said enough, you do an awesome job! Keep it up.

I'm glad they're slamming us

We play better with a chip on our shoulder.

And that's exactly it: it's almost entirely media-driven

And written by a bunch of pencil-draggers who just want to get web traffic.

I guess they figure we got plenty of time for X's and O's type of articles
This "Texas is undeserving" story line will play itself out

Pretty soon a sportwriter will realize he/she will get more attention taking a different tack, and we’ll start reading “Now wait a minute!” Texas reassessments.

You are giving sports writers way too much credit for intelligence and creativity. It just isn’t there.

That's why I was so amused by Chris Fowler's comments

When he said after our game that it was not automatic that we’d go just for beating Nebraska, all I could do was laugh. It is ONLY the media who feel like Texas doesn’t belong. The voters who matter saw things much differently.

And in the Heisman race ...

The “Heisman pundit” insists it is still Colt, in a narrow race …
http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/06/one-experts-take-on-heisman/

Saw the same thing on the ESPN ticker earlier
As much crap as we gave him in '05

He seems to be pretty good at the Heisman predictions. Get him to talking about college football, though…..

look at Tressel's ranking of the Big 10 Wisconsin team. homer
BCS worked this year

As much as I hate to admit it the BCS worked well in filtering out the three pretenders from the NC game. These guys (UC, TCU, BSU) will get the message eventually. Play one or two top tier programs during the year and you will get more consideration.

And no TCU, 9-3 Utah and 10-2 BYU, the only ranked teams you played, do not count. Play MIchigan or USC or Ohio State or somebody besides Virginia, Texas State, Clemson and SMU for your non-conference schedule. Texas State scored 21 on your vaunted defense.

I also like the fact that the Fiesta took two of these and placed them in the same game. Thank you, Fiesta, that’s one less bowl game I’ll have to watch. And I never thought I’d say it but I hope Tebow and UF thrash Cincinnati. Can’t believe Kelly voted his own team #1.

while i am happy...

that boise state is going to play tcu (and hope that tcu loses), i wish they would force them to play someone in a bcs bowl. nothing would make me happier than to see all these mid major teams get humbled. in the end, if texas beats bama, that is all that matters.

Not to reopen the debate . . .
Play one or two top tier programs during the year and you will get more consideration.

There is only one team in the BCS which scheduled and won a non-conference game against a BCS-conference champion.

You're talking Boise State and Oregon

and that’s a kudo for Boise State. But that’s the only ranked team they played and USC or Cal were generally expected to win that conference. Outside of that it was Miami-Ohio, Bowling Green, UC-Davis and Tulsa. And Tulsa almost beat them. I would be reluctant to stake a serious claim to the national title with a schedule like that.

I worked in Boise for a year and love the place and the school, but …

Boise is not ready for Alabama or even LSU ...

Saw their titanic struggle against La. Tech, too. Then they had to fight off powerful Nevada (in Boise). Nevada was beaten soundly at home by Mizzou. Really, Boise and TCU have got to play 3 BCS schools (real ones) each year in non-conference to offset their conference skeds.

Yeah, seriously, if they want to be in the mix

They might as well try and schedule their entire OOC schedule as BCS schools. Then they’d be as close to playing a “BCS” schedule as they could and if one of those wins is a BCS conference champ or top 10 contender, they would get more consideration.

Four BCS schools in a ROW?!?!? Why would they schedule that? It’s suicide!!! Um, yeah, it’s called the “lite” version of every other BCS school’s schedule.

The more I watch college football, the more I understand it’s a game of attrition as well as skill in a single game. Beating one good team is great, but beating four decent teams in a row is really hard too, and both feats show different things about a team.

Georgia?

Or did you mean among schools that are playing in BCS bowls, not just BCS conference teams?

Heisman Finalists

Colt, Ingram, Gerhart, Teblows, and SUH

Did anyone notice

ULM’s recently fired coach voted Texas #4? Wasn’t enough of a beating, Charlie? Or just sour grapes?
