Things were nearly flawless for the first nine games of the year, but the Horns struggled in the tenth. Three David Hernandez errors (he finished with four) gave Texas State a 5-3 lead through 6 innings, but the Horns struck back to take a 6-5 lead in the 8th and held on for the 6-5 win.
Brandon Belt homered and Russell Moldenhauer and Travis Tucker came up big leading the Horns back. Austin Wood was brilliant in his longest outing of the season, but the Horns wouldn't have been in this situation without some important innings from Keith Shinaberry.
As we said, it wasn't the easiest of midweek situations, but the Horns showed a lot of heart fighting from behind for only the second time all season. Hernandez struggled for the first time all season, and the starter failed to go 6+ innings for the first time, but the Horns gutted out an impressive win (unlike Rice who fell 8-6 to Sam Houston).

Thank you so much for your regular coverage of Longhorn baseball. The local media in Colorado does not cover college baseball at all until the CWS, and even that is spartan (the major colleges in the state dropped BB because of Title 9 interpretations). I loved UT baseball at D-F and have deeply missed it for almost 20 years.
This is the most comprehensive coverage I’ve seen in all these years and it makes me feel connected to those lazy afternoons of yore. You Rock, 40AS

Tough day for Hernandez
I feel bad for the guy because it just seemed to be one of those days where he couldn’t do anything right (except at the plate, where he finished 2-for-4 with a run and 2 RBI). I’m hoping it was just a little bad luck combined with playing his first game of the year on natural grass. He had been pretty much nails up until this game. And last year started out much the same way

You’re exactly right, and stuff like that is all about confidence. I once had a bseball coach who used to always say that “errors come in pairs” because you make a second one while thinking about the first one. Hopefully he has become more mentally tough in a year.

I’m very glad it’s not serious. If he has to sit this weekend against Stanford, so be it. I’d rather have him healthy for conference play.

Wonder who would play in his place
I don’t think Preston Clark is anywhere close to 100% defensively, so I’m not sure Augie would start him against a team like Stanford unless it was an absolute necessity. An inning or two against a lesser team in a midweek game is one thing, but a weekend series on the road against a good team is a different matter. The 3rd string catcher is injured, so that could make for a sticky situation. I know Moldenhauer caught in high school, but I don’t think he’s ever caught at Texas.

…said that Moldenhauer and Freshman Jordan Etier would be the two candidates if Rupp or Clark can’t play.
