Baseball Takes On Oral Roberts

[Update 8:20 PM]: Austin Wood gives up 4 in the top of the 9th. Brandon Loy draws a two out walk, steals second, advances to third on a wild pitch on an intentional walk and scores on a balk. Texas wins 5-4.

Two baseball posts on the front page in one day? It must be spring. Texas takes on Oral Roberts in a midweek matchup tonight at 6 PM. It'll be Taylor Jungmann making his first midweek start. Texas scored 4 runs in an inning for the first time since Stanford, doing it twice on Friday, and continues to see stellar pitching from the bullpen. GoBR has a great big picture look below this post, so check that out. Texas needs to win this one before heading to Stillwater and Lincoln for the next two weekends.

Big opportunity for Jungmann

be interesting to see how he performs today coming all of those incredible relief performances.

Definitely

The relievers have been outpitching the starters of late, he may be the biggest cog come June

Wonder where Craig Way is

The man doesn’t take days off does he? Guys a machine, he doesn’t need vacations…

Calling the Men's golf tournament?
Swinging strikeout to start the game for Jungmann

Nice start

Man, Jungmann is tall and lanky
Like 6-5 or 6-6

not quite Big Bird, but you’re right. Second k, I wanted that one on three pitches, so I could get a “Good morning, good afternoon, good night!” going in honor of the absent CW.

Back to back strikeouts for Jungmann

Here’s a question: if Jungmann keeps pitching studly, does he replace Green as the Sunday starter?

I was wondering about that

I think Augie definitely needs to put it under consideration.

I think Taylor just weighed in on that...
It's hard to replace a starter with a sub 3 ERA

And I’d hate to risk ruining him as a reliever. Also, come tourney time it may not matter, hopefully we’ll need 4 starters

Yup, Jungmann has definitely shown that it doesn't bother him

to come out the bullpen, but for some pitchers it does. At the very least, Green is surely on notice with these performances by Jungmann — the competition should be good for both of them.

3 strikeouts for Jungmann

Impressive

We've got this kid

for two more years. This rotation is going to be sick next year. I think they should set a goal of not giving up any hits on the year. Could be achievable.

Yup

I know last year’s growing pains sucked but there’s a crapload of payout coming IMO

Leadoff single for Tucker
Tucker sure doesn't see many pitches

Reminds me of Nick Peoples, without as many first pitches pounded into the turf.

Loy in the two-hole?

Guy has grounded into six double plays this year, three more than the catcher. I love the glove, but the work at the plate has to improve.

He's also the teams best sacrifice bunter

That strikeout notwithstanding, he has 10 sacrifices and nobody else has more than 4

Something is wrong with the broadcast.

WTH is Craig Way?

That's what I'm saying.
Nice throw over with Tucker on the bag
Epic at-bat for Torres
Helluva AB here

I’m headed out in 5 for the next hour, somebody take updates?

I should be around.

No luck for Torres, but he did make the guy throw some pitches.

I'm glad I know it's a long at-bat

I thought my gametracker had frozen.

Question about field turf

Does it have dirt under it or concrete or something else?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FieldTurf
This didn't answer the question.
haha, I know.

I’m too lazy to actually look it up myself.

Good question

from looking at their website, it seems like it’s installed on the dirt ground, though I could be wrong.

Dude must be nearing 100 throws tonight

Including all those throws to first

Moldy grounds out

0-0 through 1, nice inning for the Horns making the starter throw a ton of pitches

ORU threatening

walk and a base hit to right center.

Skip Johnson will have a word.
Is anyone else's audio static-y?
Bases loaded, no one out.
Good morning, good afternoon, good night.

big strikeout.

Short flyout, runner can't score from third, two outs.
I would have bet that was going to drop
no kidding, worried me for a minute.
HUGE TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!
Gas! He gone

Got him looking. Wow. That inning took a couple hours off my life. Jungmann battles back with a K, flyout, K to get out of a bases loaded, no out jam.

Taylor definately making a case for Sunday starts
Preston Clark just missed one

Got jammed and flew out to medium left center. Tant Shepard received on an error, he’s on first with two outs and Keyes coming up.

Kevin Keyes:

The ongoing experiment in whether or not you can learn to hit a breaking ball. So far, the answer is negatory.

He hit straight ball berry berry far.

But not that AB.

Nice running catch against the fence in foul territory, right field.

ends the inning. Longhorn offense continues it’s general stagnation. And, on that note, I need some beer. Back in a couple.

Jungmann out after two

Andrew McKirahan in. Plan must have been for Jungmann to pitch two or three.

Beer, good call, I'll join in
Ok, this has been fun, now get some hits dammit
Runners on 1st and 2nd

1 out

This pitcher is terrified of us running

their catcher must be awful throwing people out.

Torres lines/bloops out.
Moldenhauer too quick on first pitch

pulled it foul.

Strikes out

This “offense” is really starting to frustrate me. It’s not time to push the panic button yet, but it’s getting pretty dadgum close.

Tell me if you heard this before

Texas gets runners on base and in scoring position, doesn’t get a timely hit.

hmmm

I believe maybe I have…

Strike out to start off fourth

McKirahan looks like he has some good breaking stuff.

Likes to pitch backwards.

Weak ground out to Tucker for the second out.

Left a breaking ball up

served into left field for a base hit.

One potential issue:

McKirahan has a little hitch out of the stretch that keeps him from being very quick to the plate. Would like to see a slide step at some point.

Ah geez

Throwing the bat at the ball

Another base hit.

First and second with two outs. Hung a curve ball. Needs to keep those breaking pitches down. Might be overthrowing.

U3 ends the inning
First pitch swinging

weak grounder to first base as the static creeps into the broadcast.

I had it bad earlier
Are you going to watch the McDonald's AA game?
Yup.

Try to pull some video of it if I can work the software.

Hang wiff 'em

Rupp lines out hard to right field.

I'm going to have to back off my obsessive watching

of baseball if this lack of offense continues. It’s killing me.

Clark frozen

strikes out looking 3-2 after thinking he had a walk on the 3-1 pitch.

3 up and 3 down...frustrating
Stayton Thomas in, hasn't pitched much this season.

see what he has…

Bill Little pulls an Elmer Fudd on the broadcast.

an apt comparison, perhaps…

Stayton strikes him out looking.
Grounder up the middle, base hit.
Wild pitch, runner advances to second.
Ground out to third, two down.
Another wild pitch advances runner to third.
Oral Roberts has 4 hits, We have 2

And Wild Pitches make an appearance.

Clean up hitter at the plate for ORU.

Skip Johnson has seen enough with the two wild pitches. Keith Shinaberry in the game to face the lefty with a 1-0 count.

You guys suck at giving us a lead
Nicely done by Shinaberry

Ground to short ends the threat

Ground out.

Shinaberry does what he is good for — getting an out against a lefty. He really throws some junk up there.

How many innings can he realistically give us?
Depends on how many lefties come up in a row.

I really don’t like the idea of him watching anything more than two or three batters at a time — if all of them are lefties. But then I’m not a Shinaberry fan. The opponent batting average of .345 and the two home runs given up, I just don’t like the peripherals.

Not a lot, he's a specialty guy

And he’s been fantastic so far (1 ER)

Kind of odd bringing in him for one guy
That's what the lefty specialist does.

Shinaberry is prototypical — submariner who doesn’t have much on his fastball, gets by on the angle that he comes at the hitter and keeping the ball down. Almost every team in the majors has a guy like him.

I meant to add in the 5th inning
Not really

It was a critical AB versus a lefty, plus the strategy here is to see a lot of pitchers so it’s not that surprising

FYI

The ORU pitcher is 4-0 with 39 Ks in 24 innings, opponents are hitting just .198 against him

Horrible at-bats this inning.

Three up, three down in about the blink of an eye. Make the guy throw some pitches. Those at-bats are weak sauce. I can see an Augie blow up coming tonight. This pitcher is good, but I don’t like the collective approach.

Seriously, true or not, you got to tell yourself, this guy is pitching for Oral Roberts, in a way thats condescending.
College baseball is strange that way

you run into great pitchers at, um, less than powerhouse schools. From the numbers, he looks like their number one. Surprisingly enough, the Longhorns face a lot of number ones during mid week games.

Not really

This is what you get with midweek games a lot of times, a team throws their ace and you have a glorified scrimmage. ORU is a tourney team the last two years, they aren’t TAMUCC

So what you are saying is we should give up

Because what I just said is we have to pump ourselves up somehow and you denied it.

Not many easy wins in mid-week games,

since you play teams from Texas or Oklahoma — states that have a deep talent pool. You get their ace and the playing field is pretty level, particularly when you’re offense isn’t playing well.

Good inning there
0-0 through 5
New pitcher just made a great bare-handed play on a bunt.

Who is this guy on the mound? I got caught up in Bill Little saying that there is a score, and it’s 0-0. I almost puked.

So. Transfer Kendal Carillo in for his first action as a Horn

Great play on a bunt to get the first out

Good jump on his fastball.
I'm going to be like 40AS and disagree with everything

Because that’s how he rolls

The optimism is contagious
to be fair, one of the he's, I don't know if the other has to do it to
I meant the last to to be a "too", just in case he wants to bag on the grammar too
Nah, just me

:-)

Not meaning to upset you

Infield hit.

too deep in the hole for Loy to throw him out.

Passed ball.

Rupp needs to improve behind the plate suffocating the ball. Not impressed with his effort the last two innings.

Strikeout ends the inning

Great work by Carillo, two Ks in the inning

Not really

because like you I can disagree with what everyone says

Seems to have solid stuff.

Might be an option, though he’s still going to be deep in the relieving rotation.

Serrano finally out, but Loy grounds out nonetheless.

Continue not to be impressed with his bat. Hard to sacrifice when you lead off the inning.

The out parade continues.
Nice hit by Moldy

He’s starting to come around

Be nice if he would.

He was highly regarded and has always seemed to be on the verge, just hasn’t found a position or way onto the field consistently.

Yea

The injury slowed him to start the year, if he starts getting into a rhythm he’ll be dangerous

Wow. Moldenhauer just drove the ball.

Would have left a lot of parks, but that’s a double at UFCUDFF. Finally a hard-hit ball in play.

Have fun folks, Hook'em
Adios

Hopefully we’ll drum up some success

Ground out for Rupp.

The threat ends as quickly as it built. Now Moreland contradicts Little by noting that there is actually no score. That’s right, Bill — when it’s 0-0, there is no score.

Reminds me of Keith Jackson

Mentioning the clock didn’t run on the two point conversion

He certainly got senile towards the end.

The pairing with Fouts didn’t help much: “Texas should get the ball in the hands of Vince Young here.” Yes, they should snap the ball. I expect the quarterback will get the ball. That’s how football plays normally start.

K looking and a shot up the middle to start the 6th.
Stolen base, Carillo a little slow out of the stretch.
Grounder to second, two outs.
Rupp just saved a run on a horrible pitch low and outside.
Didn't give him the fastball 2-0, swinging on breaking ball.
Knocked a pitch in the ruber down, saves run again.

Rupp redeems himself.

Chopper ends it, Clark picks a poor throw on an easy play by Torres.
Phew

Awful camera-work there, nice play on a grounder to Torres to end the inning

The Torres to 3B experiment might just work
Gotta make the easy plays.

Had a little help, it sounds like, on that one.

You know what'd be great?

A run, just one

Seems like a lot to ask for.

Maybe you shouldn’t be so greedy.

Tant leads off the 7th with a single

Let’s go Horns!

Need to advance the runner, at least.

Though I don’t have much confidence in Lusson.

Ew

I thought he beat the throw. Either way, nice sac bunt for Preston

Clark, slow as molasses, almost ran that one out.

Sacrifice to move up the runner. Clark’s knees must be in horrible shape.

Keyes up, my mistake earlier.
Forgiven

Time for a big hit

Good count. Pitch around him?
Seems like a smart strategy on their part
Hazard of having Lusson behind your best RBI man.
There, Lusson's up

You got your wish :)

Woulda been nice if that had hit him.
Time to take some pitches.
I want Robbie Grossman.
Too negative -- take a walk Kyle!
Haha

That would’ve been nice. If he swings at 3-1 I may cry

Ball Four

Bases full of Longhorns, one out

Rowe to run for Keyes?

Is he really that much faster? I actually trust Tucker in these situations…

Wow, that 0-2 looked close, closer than the first two.
Yes! Barely past the diving third baseman.

My confidence is rewarded! Thataway Travis!

WOOHOO!

3rd hit for Tucker, 1-0 Texas!

Great piece of hitting there
He seems like the only guy on the team who can buckle down

and poke it somewhere. I like his bat control, that grinder ability — great for Augie Ball.

I might pinch hit Hernandez here if his fielding hasn't been so bad this year.
I like keeping Loy in

Gives him another chance to grow as a frosh, I’d agree with you if it weren’t a midweek game

Good point

as the shortstop of the future, he needs some room to grow.

Plus he's a good target for a HBP

Loy HBP, 2-0 Texas

Horrible pitch, Loy hit in the back.

Rowe comes in to score.

Sac fly Torres, 3-0 Texas.
Sac line out?
Ha, not a lot of air under it.
Gotta credit the pitching on this one

Could’ve easily got out of hand early

Helluva job by Jungmann.
Does Mickan know what to do in the batter's box?
Took the walk, nice job against their closer.
Yea, that was a nice AB for him

Good patience

Rupp is due, blow it open, buddy!
Nice rip, fouled it straight back on the first pitch.
Yea, barely missed a shot there
Wild pitch, runners move up and Tucker scores. 4-0.
4 run inning

Nice!

Rupp looks at strike 3

4-0 through 7

Felt like the team hadn't scored a run in about 10 years

after the futility through those first six innings.

Austin Wood in to close it out.
Think he chose 44 to be like JB Cox?
New no. this year?

Could be. Hey, if he can end the year on the mound at Omaha, I’m all for the imitation.

He's been doing a good impression so far this year
With the starting pitching depth

I love his move into the bullpen. The closer spot has been a problem since JBC left.

Amazing that he's the same guy who had a 4.40 ERA last year
ORU goes 1-2-3
Horns go 1-2-3, Rowe with a strikeout, big surprise.

That’s why you lost your job to the lesser of two evils, buddy.

Texas goes 1-2-3

To the 9th, 4-0 Texas

Still getting outhit 6-5 tonight
Walk, single to right, infield single that would've been a DP if Wood hadn't gotten a glove on it

Bases loaded, no outs

Sac fly, one away

4-1 Texas

RBI double

4-2 Texas, men on 2nd and 3rd, one away

How did that ball carry so far?

That looked like a relatively normal pop-up.

That looked like a pop to shallow center

Kept carrying, caught by Rowe at the track.

4-3, runner on 3rd, 2 outs

Held the runner at second, that could be big.
Yea, why on earth wouldn't he tag?

If that falls he scores easily even having tagged

Also

You owe Connor Rowe an apology :-)

That was a nice catch

Single to left

Tie game. Oy, Austin

Torres' height hurt him.
Yea, would've been a tough play
Fly out to left ends the inning

Bottom 9, tied at 4

So much for the JBC comparisons.

Wood sullied his memory there.

Heh

Remember the Stanford game in Austin in ’05 I think where JBC gave up a ton of runs in the 9th and nearly blew it?

Does make the comparison hard though

Don't recall that game specifically, but he didn't have many moments like that

Did he contribute some to that collapse in the championship round against Fullerton in 04? I’m looking at some of the stats here from 05.

Wasn't that mostly Huston?

Not to pin that one on the pitching, had the offense done anything we’d have 6 titles. CSF’s starting pitching was unreal

I think it was, but I feel like Cox was in before Street in one of those games.

I remember Kainer making a horrible play in left field. Almost as bad as Tim Moss’ error against Rice in 03. One of my first memories as a Texas baseball fan.

Check this out with JBC — he finished 39 games that year and struck out 43 batters looking. Looking. Opponents hit .207 against him.

That's unreal

Poor Tim Moss, that boot was devastating

I don't hate him for it but it was unfortunate.

Strange that I found out about losing to Rice so early as a Longhorn fan.

Loy walks, 2 away
Two wild pitches

Including one on an intentional walk, 1st and 3rd, 2 away

Talk about anti-climactic.
Seriously

I’m out, nice to get a midweek win

Wow

Balk ends the ball game

Texas coaches had pointed out a missed balk earlier in the game

Came back to help
