[Update 8:20 PM]: Austin Wood gives up 4 in the top of the 9th. Brandon Loy draws a two out walk, steals second, advances to third on a wild pitch on an intentional walk and scores on a balk. Texas wins 5-4.
Two baseball posts on the front page in one day? It must be spring. Texas takes on Oral Roberts in a midweek matchup tonight at 6 PM. It'll be Taylor Jungmann making his first midweek start. Texas scored 4 runs in an inning for the first time since Stanford, doing it twice on Friday, and continues to see stellar pitching from the bullpen. GoBR has a great big picture look below this post, so check that out. Texas needs to win this one before heading to Stillwater and Lincoln for the next two weekends.

Big opportunity for Jungmann
be interesting to see how he performs today coming all of those incredible relief performances.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Definitely
The relievers have been outpitching the starters of late, he may be the biggest cog come June
40AS - March 31, 2009
Wonder where Craig Way is
The man doesn’t take days off does he? Guys a machine, he doesn’t need vacations…
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Calling the Men's golf tournament?
40AS - March 31, 2009
Swinging strikeout to start the game for Jungmann
Nice start
40AS - March 31, 2009
Man, Jungmann is tall and lanky
40AS - March 31, 2009
Like 6-5 or 6-6
not quite Big Bird, but you’re right. Second k, I wanted that one on three pitches, so I could get a “Good morning, good afternoon, good night!” going in honor of the absent CW.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Back to back strikeouts for Jungmann
Here’s a question: if Jungmann keeps pitching studly, does he replace Green as the Sunday starter?
40AS - March 31, 2009
I was wondering about that
I think Augie definitely needs to put it under consideration.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
I think Taylor just weighed in on that...
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
It's hard to replace a starter with a sub 3 ERA
And I’d hate to risk ruining him as a reliever. Also, come tourney time it may not matter, hopefully we’ll need 4 starters
40AS - March 31, 2009
Yup, Jungmann has definitely shown that it doesn't bother him
to come out the bullpen, but for some pitchers it does. At the very least, Green is surely on notice with these performances by Jungmann — the competition should be good for both of them.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
3 strikeouts for Jungmann
Impressive
40AS - March 31, 2009
We've got this kid
for two more years. This rotation is going to be sick next year. I think they should set a goal of not giving up any hits on the year. Could be achievable.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Yup
I know last year’s growing pains sucked but there’s a crapload of payout coming IMO
40AS - March 31, 2009
Leadoff single for Tucker
40AS - March 31, 2009
Tucker sure doesn't see many pitches
Reminds me of Nick Peoples, without as many first pitches pounded into the turf.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Loy in the two-hole?
Guy has grounded into six double plays this year, three more than the catcher. I love the glove, but the work at the plate has to improve.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
He's also the teams best sacrifice bunter
That strikeout notwithstanding, he has 10 sacrifices and nobody else has more than 4
40AS - March 31, 2009
Good point.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Something is wrong with the broadcast.

Helluva AB here
I’m headed out in 5 for the next hour, somebody take updates?
40AS - March 31, 2009
I should be around.
No luck for Torres, but he did make the guy throw some pitches.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
I'm glad I know it's a long at-bat
I thought my gametracker had frozen.

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Dude must be nearing 100 throws tonight
Including all those throws to first

Kevin Keyes:
The ongoing experiment in whether or not you can learn to hit a breaking ball. So far, the answer is negatory.

He hit straight ball berry berry far.
But not that AB.

This “offense” is really starting to frustrate me. It’s not time to push the panic button yet, but it’s getting pretty dadgum close.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009

run Bevo run - March 31, 2009

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Strike out to start off fourth
McKirahan looks like he has some good breaking stuff.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Likes to pitch backwards.
Weak ground out to Tucker for the second out.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Left a breaking ball up
served into left field for a base hit.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
One potential issue:
McKirahan has a little hitch out of the stretch that keeps him from being very quick to the plate. Would like to see a slide step at some point.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
You guys suck at giving us a lead

No doubt
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
Nicely done by Shinaberry
Ground to short ends the threat
40AS - March 31, 2009
Ground out.
Shinaberry does what he is good for — getting an out against a lefty. He really throws some junk up there.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
How many innings can he realistically give us?
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
Depends on how many lefties come up in a row.
I really don’t like the idea of him watching anything more than two or three batters at a time — if all of them are lefties. But then I’m not a Shinaberry fan. The opponent batting average of .345 and the two home runs given up, I just don’t like the peripherals.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Not a lot, he's a specialty guy
And he’s been fantastic so far (1 ER)
40AS - March 31, 2009
Kind of odd bringing in him for one guy
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
That's what the lefty specialist does.
Shinaberry is prototypical — submariner who doesn’t have much on his fastball, gets by on the angle that he comes at the hitter and keeping the ball down. Almost every team in the majors has a guy like him.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
I meant to add in the 5th inning
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
Not really
It was a critical AB versus a lefty, plus the strategy here is to see a lot of pitchers so it’s not that surprising
40AS - March 31, 2009
FYI
The ORU pitcher is 4-0 with 39 Ks in 24 innings, opponents are hitting just .198 against him
40AS - March 31, 2009
Horrible at-bats this inning.
Three up, three down in about the blink of an eye. Make the guy throw some pitches. Those at-bats are weak sauce. I can see an Augie blow up coming tonight. This pitcher is good, but I don’t like the collective approach.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Seriously, true or not, you got to tell yourself, this guy is pitching for Oral Roberts, in a way thats condescending.
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
College baseball is strange that way
you run into great pitchers at, um, less than powerhouse schools. From the numbers, he looks like their number one. Surprisingly enough, the Longhorns face a lot of number ones during mid week games.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Not really
This is what you get with midweek games a lot of times, a team throws their ace and you have a glorified scrimmage. ORU is a tourney team the last two years, they aren’t TAMUCC
40AS - March 31, 2009
So what you are saying is we should give up
Because what I just said is we have to pump ourselves up somehow and you denied it.
run Bevo run - March 31, 2009
Not many easy wins in mid-week games,
since you play teams from Texas or Oklahoma — states that have a deep talent pool. You get their ace and the playing field is pretty level, particularly when you’re offense isn’t playing well.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Good inning there
40AS - March 31, 2009
0-0 through 5
40AS - March 31, 2009
New pitcher just made a great bare-handed play on a bunt.
Who is this guy on the mound? I got caught up in Bill Little saying that there is a score, and it’s 0-0. I almost puked.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
So. Transfer Kendal Carillo in for his first action as a Horn
Great play on a bunt to get the first out

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Yea
The injury slowed him to start the year, if he starts getting into a rhythm he’ll be dangerous

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Reminds me of Keith Jackson
Mentioning the clock didn’t run on the two point conversion
40AS - March 31, 2009
He certainly got senile towards the end.
The pairing with Fouts didn’t help much: “Texas should get the ball in the hands of Vince Young here.” Yes, they should snap the ball. I expect the quarterback will get the ball. That’s how football plays normally start.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
I might pinch hit Hernandez here if his fielding hasn't been so bad this year.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
I like keeping Loy in
Gives him another chance to grow as a frosh, I’d agree with you if it weren’t a midweek game
40AS - March 31, 2009

Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
He's been doing a good impression so far this year
40AS - March 31, 2009

Amazing that he's the same guy who had a 4.40 ERA last year
40AS - March 31, 2009
ORU goes 1-2-3
40AS - March 31, 2009
Horns go 1-2-3, Rowe with a strikeout, big surprise.
That’s why you lost your job to the lesser of two evils, buddy.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Texas goes 1-2-3
To the 9th, 4-0 Texas
40AS - March 31, 2009
Still getting outhit 6-5 tonight
40AS - March 31, 2009
Walk, single to right, infield single that would've been a DP if Wood hadn't gotten a glove on it
Bases loaded, no outs
40AS - March 31, 2009
Sac fly, one away
4-1 Texas
40AS - March 31, 2009
RBI double
4-2 Texas, men on 2nd and 3rd, one away
40AS - March 31, 2009
uh oh.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Oy
40AS - March 31, 2009
How did that ball carry so far?
That looked like a relatively normal pop-up.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
That looked like a pop to shallow center
Kept carrying, caught by Rowe at the track.
4-3, runner on 3rd, 2 outs
40AS - March 31, 2009
Held the runner at second, that could be big.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Yea, why on earth wouldn't he tag?
If that falls he scores easily even having tagged
40AS - March 31, 2009
Also
You owe Connor Rowe an apology :-)
That was a nice catch
40AS - March 31, 2009
Late, late swing 1-2.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Single to left
Tie game. Oy, Austin
40AS - March 31, 2009
Torres' height hurt him.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Yea, would've been a tough play
40AS - March 31, 2009
Fly out to left ends the inning
Bottom 9, tied at 4
40AS - March 31, 2009
So much for the JBC comparisons.
Wood sullied his memory there.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Heh
Remember the Stanford game in Austin in ’05 I think where JBC gave up a ton of runs in the 9th and nearly blew it?
Does make the comparison hard though
40AS - March 31, 2009
Don't recall that game specifically, but he didn't have many moments like that
Did he contribute some to that collapse in the championship round against Fullerton in 04? I’m looking at some of the stats here from 05.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Wasn't that mostly Huston?
Not to pin that one on the pitching, had the offense done anything we’d have 6 titles. CSF’s starting pitching was unreal
40AS - March 31, 2009
I think it was, but I feel like Cox was in before Street in one of those games.
I remember Kainer making a horrible play in left field. Almost as bad as Tim Moss’ error against Rice in 03. One of my first memories as a Texas baseball fan.
Check this out with JBC — he finished 39 games that year and struck out 43 batters looking. Looking. Opponents hit .207 against him.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
That's unreal
Poor Tim Moss, that boot was devastating
40AS - March 31, 2009
I don't hate him for it but it was unfortunate.
Strange that I found out about losing to Rice so early as a Longhorn fan.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Loy walks, 2 away
40AS - March 31, 2009
Two wild pitches
Including one on an intentional walk, 1st and 3rd, 2 away
40AS - March 31, 2009
Talk about anti-climactic.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Seriously
I’m out, nice to get a midweek win
40AS - March 31, 2009
Yup.
Have a good one.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Wow
Balk ends the ball game
40AS - March 31, 2009
Walk-off balk.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - March 31, 2009
Texas coaches had pointed out a missed balk earlier in the game
Came back to help
40AS - March 31, 2009
