Chris Ogbonnaya to the Rams; Miller to TB, Melton to CHI

Drafted in the 7th Round by the St. Louis Rams, Chris Ogbonnaya will get his shot at making the team and playing in the NFL. Could not happen to a better kid and I'll be rooting hard for him to stick. One of my favorite all-time 'Horns.

Congratulations, Chris. Keep making us proud.

Earlier in the day Texas DT Roy Miller was selected in the third round by Tampa Bay, while DE Henry Melton was snapped up by Chicago in Round 4. I'm happy for both players and love their chances to have productive careers.

[UPDATE] Cedric Dockery signs FA deal with New Orleans.

[UPDATE] KEYE-TV reporting Quan Cosby will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cosby still out there

I wonder if teams are scared away by his age?

his size and age are two strikes against him, unfortunately.
Speed moreso than age I think...
Shouldn't be

If anything, should be an advantage. Not gonna have to pay him top rookie dollars as an early round draft pick, he’s mature, intelligent, etc. In any case, contracts aren’t guaranteed so if he doesn’t work out you’re not stuck with him.

Someone should grab him.

Would be kind of cool to see him go to SF with Cabtree

Would not mind seeing him go to Philly or Houston

Still 41 picks left.

39 Picks Left...... Surprised nobody took Harrell.

I’m a little miffed about Quan. I did not expect that he’d last this long.

Hopefully Quan to Dallas
That's a slap in the face...Manuel Johnson over Quan.
Jerry Jones hates Longhorns.
I believe you

I’m kind of surprised…I figured Quan would have been picked up by someone. I have hope that someone still will.

Me too. Kid catches anything in his area

And I hate Jerry Jones

May the Cowboys never win anything, ever again. Sucks Roy Williams is there now.

hahaha

Thanks for the response on Melton, PB. Unfortunately, I had to email C&C too because of Iglesias….no response yet. Do they have Internet in Oklahoma yet? :)

C&CMachine

They’ve got a great new author there, actually, who’s writing under the handle dishingoutdimes. Consistently solid content.

I may have email the wrong guy

Thanks for the heads up.

PB, I'm a bit disappointed that you're a Cowboys hater....

Did you want Roy Williams to stay in Detroit and end his career before it ever got started in Detroit or to be the #1 receiver on a good team with a chance to be a Pro Bowler?
I’d rather have Quan over Manny and rather have Tex Schramm as the owner of the Cowboys, but Jerry Jones is good for the NFL as he’s the most progressive and aggressive owner. Love him or hate him, he’s good for the NFL and the Cowboys.

Even if I *weren't* a Steelers fan...

I would find Jerry Jones impossible to like.

I’ll always root for Roy to play well, but can’t bring myself to actively cheer on the Cowboys in general.

Forget Jerry

And Bum Bright and Clint Murchison — all thoroughly deplorable individuals. It’s the team you love, not the owner. (See Tennessee Titans.)

They gave the Steelers a Super Bowl back in the 70's....

You should like them a lil’ bit. Just curious as to why you like the Steelers? I generally assume that everybody that goes to UT is from Texas, you from Pennsylvania?

Cowboys fan here,

and Jerry Jones is a horrible owner. He’s a glory hog who needs to takes credit for everything, so he’s constantly wheeling and dealing and running off any other competent scout/coach/personnel director. Every decision he makes is a terrible one. He’s still living in 1995 where he lucked into the Aikman-Irvin-Smith combo. The Cowboys last good draft was ‘04, when Bill Parcells ran things. Not to mention he’s a billionaire who bilked the residents of north texas out of mega millions. He almost makes me want to quit on the ’Boys.

What about last year?

Mike Jenkins, Felix Jones, Martellus Bennett, Tashard Choice(4th), Orlando Scandrick(5th)….not too bad when you’re 5th rounder can be a starting db in the league. Jerry does need to hire a gm, but last year’s draft wasn’t that bad.
Don’t forget Parcells drafted Spears in the first round and also a fella by the name of Bobby Carpenter.

Agree, for the most part.

Last year’s draft was good, and the Carpenter pick in 06 was pretty bad. But look at this years and 07’s draft, and please tell me wtf is going on?

And as for Spears, dont forget who else was taken that draft: DeMarcus Ware, Marion Barber, Jay Ratliff and Chris Canty. One pontential HOFer, one perennial pro bowler, and a few quality players. I think the Spears pick is forgivable, esp when comparing to Jerry Jones’ history of David Lafluer, Ebenezer Ekubian, and (OU’s) Roy Williams

Also, his trades and FA acquisitions are utterly ridiculous. Roy Williams is worth a 1st/3rd/6th? He was barely conscious in a Cowboys uniform. Two first round picks for Joey Galloway in 2001? That makes sense. Putting Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, and TO on the same team? No way will that lead to any distractions.

The one positive thing I can say about JJ is that he wants to win and he’s trying. Unfortunately his ego/incompetence really get in the way

Cowboys took Stephen Mcgee enough said....
Might be best for Quan not to get drafted at this point

Would be great to hear his name called, but if not, he can shop himself as a FA, which would give him options to find a good fit.

Could not agree more

It’s much better to be a free agent than drafted in 6th or 7th round, in my opinion. You can seek out a better team, better “fit,” etc. Best wishes, Quan. It wouldn’t have been right for someone of your stature to end up with the moniker “Mr. Irrelevant” after all you did for us these last couple of years!

And Leonard Davis

Has there ever been a year where Notre Dame didn't have anyone get drafted?

I haven’t seen a single person from there yet.

S David Bruton was drafted today
They decided to forego talent for the X's and O's advantage
How can all those star recruits not go early in the draft...

what is Weis doing to these kids?

I forget how long Weis has been there

Are his recruits now moving on to the NFL, or do they have a year left? Honestly, I don’t remember how long he’s been at ND.

these are still ty's kids
Weis was hired in December 2004.

I guess we’re not counting the 2005 class against him because he had only been their coach 3 months before signing day?

Miami came really close to not having any drafted, after the big deal ESPN and others made in past drafts about how many consecutive years Miami had someone drafted in the first round.

good luck to quan. hope he lands in a good situation.
Ditto.

I think Quan will make a lot of teams wish they’d taken a flyer on him late. He’s a proven commodity on a big time team with the national spotlight on him and the team weekly, it’s absurd to not take a “chance” on that versus guys with more “upside.”

As Rick Gosselin likes to say, in the late rounds only take guys who performed at big schools. You want guys who can make your team and contribute and handle the pressure. Big school guys, like Cosby, are much better fits most often than these small school kids. Cosby can earn a nice living on special teams and special passing packages. Just has to find a good fit. Good kid, wish him well.

i think he has a ton of potential as a 3rd wr.

he’ll be matched up against safeties and be able to get a free release off the line and work the middle of the field where he can make some moves in the open. I don’t think he’ll ever turn into an elite receiver like a steve smith but he can certainly make a good career for himself.

Chase Daniel to the Redskins

Undrafted, probably a pretty good place for him to land

Sitting behind Colt Brennan...
Lots of good restaurants in D.C.
Cosby to the Bengals, Cedric Dockery to the Saints

Found a great blog (New England Patriots fan site) with a list of signed free agents.

The Bengals can use some good WR play after losing TJ and with Ocho Cinco wanting out of town.

booo

come to houston!!!

is that site Official signings?

Melton and Miller ended up in great spots. I can’t think of a better landing for Melton, who now gets Marinelli as his line coach. Awesome. Miller gets a great defensive tradition there in Tampa, and coach Raheem is going to make sure his line coaches get the most out of his defensive talent. I’m happy for both of them.

Og is going to be behind a coupe of big, versatile backs (Jackson, Leonard) in St. Louis, so he might have a tough time catching on long-term, but he’ll at least have a shot.

I was thinking after Rak went to the Skins that I’d love to get down to see him in a home game, but then I remembered how damn expensive tickets are. Might as well fly round-trip on Southwest to Austin and catch a better game for that price.

Ticket costs

My roommate and I were thinking the same thing – it’d be awesome to have a UT contingent to welcome Orakpo to his first game with the Skins, but eff those ticket prices. Maybe the Texas Exes chapter can just hold a welcoming BBQ for him instead.

pre-season?

I went to a pre-season redskins game last year, and it was free… so im not sure how much it would have cost, but i assume it wouldnt be outrageous. It was a blast. Also you can get cheap tickets from the pentagon if you know anyone who works there…

What does a Redskins ticket cost these days?

Cheapest tickets on Stub Hub for the ’Skins & Cowboys on the 27 Dec 09 is $150

That's not as bad as I imagined

Good luck seeing Texas-OU for that sum. And pro football fans SWEAR that there are real rivalries in the NFL.

I say Hogwash!

Yea no doubt.

I was surprised when I saw that they were “only” $150 for the Cowboys game. When my wife and I were dating, she bought me tickets to the 2007 Texas OU game in Dallas and I think she would have happily paid $300 for two tickets.
