Burnt Orange Nation

Baseball Travels to Stillwater

[Update 7:18 PM]: Horns take game one 7-2 behind 3 HRs and terrific fielding and pitching.

This weekend in Stillwater is the halfway point in the season. Like every other conference series, and especially road series, taking two of three games is the goal. Looking through the national statistics in a little more detail and a few things pop out.

  1. Texas is bad offensively, but it doesn't need to be great to win. Think back to 2004, that team went to the CWS championship game only to lose to CSF. That team was an elite pitching squad (#10 in the rankings) and a mediocre-to-bad offensive squad (#154).
  2. Give us the elite pitching over the hitting any day of the week. '06, '07 and '08 could all hit but only '07 could pitch, and that team ran into a red hot and poorly seeded UCI team. This isn't to say the offense doesn't need to improve, it clearly does, but maybe just marginal improvements will see big dividends.
  3. It's probably pretty natural for Texas to have deflated hitting numbers until it reaches Omaha. UCFCUDFF is a vacuum, Rosenblatt is not. That's why we saw offensive explosions from Texas in '04 and '05.
  4. The signs of offensive improvement are there: Torres and Moldenhauer are regulars in the lineup, Lusson's hitting well, Tucker's healthy...but are these signs of improvement or signs of weak competition?
  5. The second closest team in terms of team ERA nationally is Arizona State, .34 points higher (2.46). The good news is that at this point in the season, we probably know what's going to end it. But if the offense improves, even slightly, the sky's the limit.

Lineup info

Brandon Belt’s eye apparently isn’t ready to go yet because he didn’t even make the trip to Stillwater (per Craig and Keith), so Preston Clark will start at first with David Hernandez DHing.

Connor Rowe is getting the start in center. Both Rowe and Kyle Lusson are solid fielders, and Rowe probably has a slight edge in speed. Neither has hit the ball very well, but Lusson hasn’t bunted well of late either, so maybe that’s why Rowe is getting the nod. I’m not partial to one or the other, though. Offensively, all I would really ask of either of them is to get on base now and then, bunt well, and run the bases well. Since the defensive differences are basically negligible, I (as usual) will defer to Augie’s decision.

Is there a video feed?
There's a link in the preview

for video, but it takes you to the OSU athletics’ site, which says you have to be a member.

I don't think so

I think OSU has one but you have to subscribe to something.

Horns went 1-2-3 in the top of the first.

I hope Belt gets back soon

We can’t afford to have him out for too long with our hitting woes.

No question

He’s the most consistent hitter in the lineup by far.

Ruffin strikes out two, gets the Pokes out 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first.

Scoreless after one.

Kevin Keyes with a two out double in the top of the second
Keyes doubles for first hit of the game (2 out)
BTW - OSU's livestats thing is terrible

The batting team is red and black and the fielding team is blue?
No pitch count?

Hernandez walks

OSU has a lefty-lefty matchup with Michael Torres against Cowboy ace Andrew Oliver

3 run homer!!!!

Atta boy Miguel!! He got it up into the wind current blowing out to left. Great start…

Love getting our bats into the game early - we needed that
Definitely

Even more encouraging that the whole rally came with two outs.

Torres homers - 3 runs!!!
Connor Rowe homers to left!!!!

4-0 Texas!

Holy crap!

Is that a smaller ballpark? Or are we just awesome today?

I think it's probably some of both

From what I remember from years’ past, OSU plays in a bandbox

Craig and Keith said the conditions were very hitter friendly

Small ballpark and the wind out to left, and a right-handed-heavy Texas lineup. Of course Torres is a lefty, but you get the point…

Hopefully that won't be the same for OSU
Tucker singles

The rally lives on. Still two down.

Need a tripple for the team cycle this inning
Loy doubles to left, Tucker scores 5-0 Horns

Someone pinch me please.

What's taking so long

Did they talk to the pitcher or something?

LOY!

RBI Double

Isn't Oliver supposed to be a stud?

What on earth has gotten into us?

Tant walks
Shepherd walks

Horns on first and second, Rupp (who started the inning with a K) to the plate.

Will Ruffin know what to do with an early lead?
Inning finally over, Rupp grounds out to the pitcher, 5-0 Horns after 1.5

40 AS, can you do the updates?

Yea

Might be taking off around 10 my time but should be further along then

K

I’ll be around then.

Sucks to be the guy who got 2 outs in the same inning.
Called strike 3

Ruffin’s 3rd

1 out single for OSU
Foul out, strike out ends the inning

5-0 Texas through 2

As good a start as anyone could hope for
4 Ks for Ruffin
Keyes Ks after nearly getting an extra base hit

Believe it or not it was on a breaking ball

Great AB for Hernandez

Ends with a pop out, 1-2-3 for Texas

5th K for Ruffin

1 away

And a 6th

2 away

2 out triple
Groundout on the next pitch

5-0 through 3

Horns go in order

Single, walk, sac bunt to start the 4th

1st and 3rd, one away

SAC fly

5-1 Texas

Groundout ends the inning

5-1 through 4

Leadoff single for Loy
To the pitcher? Was it a bunt?
No

Sounded like a swinging bunt…

Aggy down 3-2 to Tech Bot 6

Shep flies out

Great AB for Rupp, draws a walk

Clark pops out, Keyes flies out to end the inning

Halfway home, 5-1 Texas

OSU goes meekly

1-2-3, 5-1 Texas through 5

1 out single for Torres but Rupp grounds into DP

5-1 through 5.5

1-2-3

Including a great play by Torres to end the inning
5-1 through 6

Ruffin is breezing right now it seems
Yea

I’d like to see one more inning from him then get the bullpen some work and save his arm

Horns go quickly

1-2-3, 5-1 Bot 7

"Just a light zephyr, ballparks going to play a lot fairer"

Keith Moreland ladies and gentlemen…2 out double for OSU

Livestats says it's a single with an error on Tant
They gave him an error for overrunning it I think
Single scores him
RBI single

5-2 Texas

Another great play by Torres ends the inning

5-2 through 7

Oliver still pitching it seems

That’s impressive after his second inning

Leadoff walk for Rupp
Which chases Oliver
Surprised he lasted through the rough 2nd inning
Hernandez single brings in Rupp (6-2)
Sac bunt, Keyes grounds out, RBI single for Hernandez

6-2!

Torres strikes out

6-2 through 7.5

4 ball walk to lead off the inning

Might end Ruffin’s night

Fly to left

Big first out

Single

First and third, still one away

Wood coming in

Great outting for Ruffin, 7.1 IP, 2 ER so far

4-6-3 DP!

6-2 through 8

Leadoff homer for Conner Rowe

7-2…Horns have 3 HRs tonight, 7 the rest of the year

Rowe with his second homer of the game!

Good idea for Augie to give him the start today

Horns go 1-2-3 after that

Bot 9, 7-2 Horns

Groundout to 2B, one away
One out single

Aggy down 4-3, Top 9

Good day so far for the Horns

I better grab some dinner, but you’re doing a good job with the highlights

5-4-3 DP ends it

Good guys take game one 7-2

And I'm outta here

Nice win tonight, hopefully we can take the series tomorrow
