Despite arguably being outplayed on the weekend and being lucky to get away without an Aggie sweep, Texas took two of three from A&M and in the process emerged as Big XII Regular Season Champions. We're sure Augie and his boys feel terrible for removing any drama from the final weekend of the conference season, but they'll probably get over it.
You can get a full review of the series from Texas Sports: The 11-9 extra-inning Texas win in College Station on Friday, Aggie's 3-0 response in Austin Saturday, and the Longhorns' 5-4 rubber-game win on Sunday. Texas won Game Three despite being badly outhit, thanks to some first-inning generosity on the part of the Aggie defense. We're going to focus here less on a review of the series, which was essentially running here at BON all weekend, than on a look to the future.
This weekend makes one championship on the season for the Longhorns, who now set their sights on the Big XII Tournament and the subsequent NCAA Tournament. As we noted yesterday, winning the conference's regular season title puts Texas in prime position for a top eight national seed, which is a huge advantage in the hunt for a national championship. In case you have forgotten or never knew, here is a Cliff's Notes version of how the baseball tournament works:
Eight teams receive "National Seeds," appropriately numbered one through eight. Those schools are guaranteed to play at home for the first two weekends of the tournament, assuming they advance past the first. Sixty-four teams make the tournament field, starting in 16 double elimination, four-team "sub-regionals:" eight hosted by the national seeds, eight hosted by other schools. Each sub-regional is paired with another, and the two winners of paired sub-regionals meet the following weekend in "super regionals." Super regionals are glorified three-game series, and whichever team wins two games advances to the College World Series in Omaha.

So getting one of those top 8 national seeds goes a long way toward helping a team make the trip to Omaha. Of course, Texas' recent tournament struggles have all taken place in Austin, so there are obviously no guarantees.
Going forward, then, the Longhorns are off for the middle of the coming week before finishing the season with a Saturday double-header against Alabama A&M. Texas dispatched AAMU's fellow SWAC team Texas Southern last week, and the Bulldogs are even worse at 14-25 on the season. There is nothing to be gained and much to be lost on Saturday, as a loss in either game would hurt Texas' RPI, which is currently the highest it has been all season at third. In fact, simply playing the games at all will probably hurt the RPI a little due to the strength-of-schedule factor.
Should Texas get the two wins, though, merely avoiding a two-and-out performance in the Big XII tourney may well be enough to secure a national seed. This is when the college baseball season gets really fun, and Texas fans would be wise to savor it; it's an eternity between the final out and the opening kickoff.

Agreed
I think one win in the Big 12 Tourney absolutely assures a top 8 seed, though Im not so sure it isnt already written in stone. I know the RPI isnt everything, but combined with Texas’ SOS…its a nearly impossible to make an argument that Texas doesnt have one of the 8 most impressive resumes in the nation.
I think at this point its only a matter of how high of a seed we end up with. I think prior to the Baylor series we were hovering on the 7-10 range, and I think now we’re looking closer to 4-6, depending how things shake out the rest of the way for the other top teams, of course.
Either way, what the boys have done the past 20+ games is fairly impressive. I dont think its inappropriate to expect a run to Omaha this year, though we surely have learned not to take such a thing for granted. Enjoy the next couple weeks, folks, because then the fun really begins.

Thanks for the update
The baseball coverage doesn’t draw near the comments but it deserves the same amount of love! Thanks for the hard work.

it is kind of sad
when you look through the game threads and theres like three of us talking to each other…
I think people just have a hard time getting amped up about the regular season games for baseball. but with postseason ball just around the corner, I think people will be a little more excited.

eh..
…it could be worse..like beergut worse…I enjoy the threads, but I usually am busy doing something else to comment.

For me,
I couldn’t stand the constant disagreement with every statement I posted. You say something like, “The Horns are swinging at too many first pitches.” Inevitably you get, “I disagree, they have to be aggressive.” I reply, “Aggressive is fine, but if they’re hacking at anything the pitcher throws up there for a first pitch, were are behind in every count.” Responses goes something like, “You can’t get hits without swinging the bat.”
Note: not exact conversation but similarities. Enough was enough for me.

"it's an eternity between the final out and the opening kickoff"
rhetorically beautiful yet still so sad.

So true
Once you are to old for school summer just sucks. Baseball is only fun to watch during the post season and nothing else is going on. Wake me up when August gets here.

Thanks!
And agreed about the sadness

TV coverage
I’ll admit I’ve never followed Texas baseball until this year, besides catching a few post-season games back home in TX.
Generally, does the level of TV coverage for the NCAA tournament increase? I’d love to watch a game on nationa TV (though I won’t hold onto hopes for an HD broadcast).
TXinDC - May 11, 2009
yes
more streaming video for regionals than tv coverage, then supers get good coverage on the networks plus espn360 if you’re lucky enough to get it.
amorphous - May 11, 2009
Somewhat
ESPN and it’s various channels usually pick up three or four of the regionals and broadcast those games, and some of the super regionals as well. All of the CWS games will be on ESPN.

ESPN
I was just checking out the college sports section over on ESPN. Their analyst as of right now has Texas as the #1 overall seed for the upcoming NCAA tournament. I know that is still two weeks away and there are things that can still happen. But I think it is safe to say that Texas will get a top 8 seed. Now if they go on and win the Big 12 tournament then I think they are a almost a lock at #1. The only reason I say almost is because Rice did beat the Horns twice this year and the Owls have been hovering around the top spot for a lot of the season.
HornsRiverine - May 11, 2009
not to be rude...
but thats flawed logic. relying on ESPN analysis is your first problem.
Texas has a great resume and has had an outstanding season. But they arent the number overall seed and wont be regardless of how they do in the Big 12 tournament. I think they are hovering on a top 5 seed currently.
I think North Carolina, Georgia Tech, and CSU Fullerton are all ahead of Texas at this point.
If you want some good statistical analysis, check out www.boydsworld.com They run a daily RPI calculation which pretty much mirrors the one the tournament committee uses and a SoS/Iterative Strength ranking as well.
Rice beat Texas during two mid-week games. While thats a bonus for Rice, its not really indicative of how the two teams would fair in a 3 game series where each threw their top 3 pitchers.
6th street - May 11, 2009
correction
I meant to include UC Irvine in consideration for a top 3 seed, not Georgia Tech. I think Ga Tech, Az State, Texas, Rice, and LSU are all right in behind those other 3.
6th street - May 11, 2009
I agree with you
about ESPN especially when it comes to covering college sports outside football and basketball. I am stating my opinions about Texas being a possible #1 seed based on their strength of schedule and RPI. Out of all those teams that you named only Cal State Fullerton is ahead of Texas in both categories. Now if Texas runs through the Big 12 tournament and wins it all. Their RPI is going to shoot up and I believe at worst they will be a #2 seed. Honestly if Texas is 2 and done in the tournament I have no doubt that they are still a top 8 seed. I can also agree with you about Rice, I really did not put thought into the fact that both games were mid-week games.
HornsRiverine - May 11, 2009
fair enough
and im not disagreeing with you about Texas having a very strong RPI and SoS. But the committee doesnt make the seeding determinations solely on RPI and SoS. Even with an overall number #1 RPI ranking, I dont see Texas with a realistic chance of getting that top seed. Besides, look at what we’re quibbling over here. If we’re honestly evaluating it, any of the top 8 seeds should be sufficient and should be considered about equal. The important thing is the home field advantage until Omaha, which we’ve established is all but a foregone conclusion at this point.
I appreciate the debate. Lets see how things shake out next weekend and we’ll have a clearer picture of where we stand heading into the conference tournament.

Not that I care about the gooners...
But I thought they were good enough to make it into the field of 64. ESPN has neither them NOR Kansas St. So grain of salt my man. My first post by the way. Today, Burnt Orange Nation, tomorrow TWITTER!! :)

ESPN has both OU and KSU as 2 seeds in their projection
I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

I think....
I got carried away to post and didn’t do the most extensive research. Sorry for the Aggie-like dedication to my initial post.
