McClellan has next. Basketball recruiting is a strange beast -- it's non-linear, as in the process doesn't operate from year to year, as Mack Brown prefers to do for football, but helter-skelter, one commitment from one year, another commitment from another, all with the added oddity of the coaches having few scholarships, but no guarantees how many they will have available in any given year.
But I digress. The point of this section is to introduce the newest member of the 2011 Longhorn basketball team ($) -- Houston Bellaire shooting guard Sheldon McClellan, a 6-5, 180-pounder who gave his commitment to Rick Barnes on Monday. McClellan joins St. Benedict's point guard Myck Kabongo in the class and becomes the latest in a line of tall guards recruited by Barnes, a priority starting with the 2009 class after suffering through two years with a zone defense featuring two sub six-foot guards at the top and a 6-2 guard on the baseline -- not exactly the recipe for an active, disruptive zone.

McClellan, not expected to make an early decision, did so after visiting Austin over the weekend for the third time this year. Already with a connection to the program from working out with John Lucas, the father of recent transfer Jai Lucas whom McClellan knows as a Bellaire alumnus, the young wing felt comfortable enough in Austin ($) and around the team that he pulled the trigger early:
I thought it was a very good time to commit to Texas. I liked the first two visits, but the third one was the one that led me to commit. The whole process of seeing the campus, talking to the academic people and speaking with the coaching staff put Texas over the top. I also felt like I'm cool with the players and that made me feel comfortable.
Angel Johnson, McClellan's mother, felt comfortable with her son attending Texas:
I'm excited. I'm so excited and happy. My heart has always been in it with Texas. I like the basketball and love the academics. Coach Barnes made us feel so comfortable. I don't think they understood how impressed we were with them. Sheldon told me in the car on the way home that he wanted to commit, so we talked about it and I'm excited he did. I watched Texas play all year long because they have some guys from the Houston area we know. I went to a couple of games and said to myself that I really like Texas. The tour and talks Saturday took us to another level and Sheldon knew Texas is where he wanted to be.
The Houston Bellaire product describes his game:
I don't mind playing the point guard but I want to play shooting guard. I think I bring energy to the team and just hard work. I'm improving on my ball handling and my shooting. It's just a lot of hard work.
Gerry Hamilton of BurntOrangeBeat has his take on the results of McClellan's hard work to date:
McClellan is a silky smooth 6-5 guard that possesses an advanced skill level off the bounce and a quickly improving three-point jumper. As a freshman, the long armed guard spent time at the point before moving to the wing for the most part as a sophomore. Right handed with an impressive pace, McClellan does a good job of changing speeds thus creating driving opportunities. He can finish in the paint or make plays for teammates.
As the sophomore gets stronger, his release will move up and he will be a more consistent long-range shooter. Because he has an impressive feel for the game and the ability to put the ball on the floor, he creates space for a mid-range or long-range jumper with ease.
McCoy fixing throwing motion. Acknowledging that his throwing motion changed during his junior season as a result of injury and fatigue, Case McCoy spoke candidly with Orangebloods ($) about working to stay consistent:
There's a couple of habits I had gotten into with my throwing motion from an ongoing season and different injuries that I had gotten that weren't bad but I kind of had to change my throwing motion a little bit.
McCoy doesn't specifically mention his release point, which tends to change from throw to throw, but the lack of consistency with his release is one of the most common complaints about him as a passer.
Continuing his candidness, McCoy says that some of his inconsistency at the Elite 11 camp was simply a lack of preparation, as he admits that he had not thrown the football much ($) in the days and week prior to the event:
That was kind of one of the first times I've picked up a ball and went, and I had a good first half of the workout with all the drills and just got my arm kind of worn out. I didn't feel like I wanted to in the second half with the one-on-ones and all that. It didn't quite go like I wanted it to.
They called and they want me to come to another camp to see me again. If we decide to make a trip out to California to make a trip out if it and do it, we will, but I'm not sure we're going to.
Besides general arm strength, McCoy's frame is the largest concern -- extremely lanky frame and lacking development because of his commitment to basketball and track at Graham, McCoy is finally getting a chance to work hard in the weight room (lifting five times a week) and is already heavier than Colt when he got to Texas. In fact, the younger McCoy is on the same weight training program Texas uses, as the Graham strength and conditioning coaches have made several trips down to Austin to visit with Mad Dog and McCoy says it is already making a difference. It would be excellent for the program if the S&C coaches for every team with a committed player would come down and learn from the Longhorn staff.
A trip to Austin is in the plans for Case during the summer, when he plans to work out with his older brother, but the Graham signal caller is not planning on attending camps this summer other than those at Texas, as the Longhorn coaches prefer commits not camp at other schools.
Wood still working Seastrunk. 2010 quarterback Connor Wood has maintained contact with Lache Seastrunk in an effort to lure him to Texas, while also working hard to increase his strength and speed ($) during the off season, increasing his weight to 212 with a target of 220 by the fall. Wood has also spent a lot of time in the film room, five or six hours a week by his estimates, in an effort to better understand defenses and where to go with the football.
On the radar: 2011 running back/safety Tyson Coleman. It's no secret that Mack Brown has a very strict set of criteria for any out-of-state recruits. Foremost among them is the potential recruit being pro-active about their interest, generally demonstrated by attending summer football camps. Lake Oswego's Tyson Coleman is just such an OOS player ($) -- he camped in Austin last summer and plans to make it down again from his home state of Oregon, expressing excitement about learning more from the Texas coaching staff.
A 6-2, 200-pounder blessed with a rare combination of size and speed, Coleman looks like the real deal, an excellent running back who may project as a safety at Texas because of the incredible in-state depth at the position in 2011. However, if the Longhorns choose to offer a large back and a smaller back, Coleman may get an offer as a running back, though that may depend somewhat on the level of interest from Malcolm Brown and the Texas' coaches evaluations of both players.
Already possessing verbal offers from Oregon and Washington, Coleman will be highly sought after, but currently has the Longhorns out in front, in fact, "pretty far out in front," with his parents already considering a move if he ends up committing to playing at Texas.
From the Land of Miscellany. Darius Terrell separated his shoulder ($) and suffered a ligament tear in practice last week diving to attempt a catch -- surgery may not be necessary...Still no word on J'Covan Brown, as the NCAA Clearinghouse drags their collective feet...Word is that 2012 forward Zach Peters still favors the Longhorns, but remains interested in North Carolina...Connor Atchley is reportedly back to his junior form and admits that his tongue injury in large part derailed his season.

Wood
Holy crap, they use basketballs at Second Baptist? His arm strength must be phenomenal.
BoddickerIsClutch - May 5, 2009
Sheldon McClellan on the mind, apparently.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - May 5, 2009
wood understands they don’t allow ball substitutions, regardless of defensive scheming?
Displaced Longhorn - May 5, 2009
“2012 forward Zach Peters” ?… How the heck can you recruit a kid who is, what, 14-15? I can’t imagine trying to project someone that far.
UT_BKC - May 5, 2009
He seems like an exceptionally mature kid
and actually is a year older, I believe, but looks like he is about 18. I think basketball players develop a little bit earlier than football players since they don’t have to mature so much in terms of strength.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - May 5, 2009
That last little comment on Connor?
I am not sure I understand this, a joke?
blazzinken - May 5, 2009
I'm also confused...
TXinDC - May 5, 2009
He almost bit through is tongue and had to have more than 20 stitches.
It happened during the Appalachian State game when he was hit in the top of the head on a layup and bit down on his tongue. He was actually lucky that he didn’t bite it clean off, but he did experience a lot of swelling with it and couldn’t eat much for a while, but made him weaker physically. I believe there also might have been an ankle injury and he got popped in the chin during the first couple of games. Couple that with Abrams’ inability to actually get him the ball when spotted up after setting screens and it was a recipe for disaster. Quite the lost season for Connor.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - May 5, 2009
I remember him biting his toungue
But it just seemed like it was out of the blue.
blazzinken - May 5, 2009
Hope for the best for him.
His senior year had me all excited coming in, and we all saw what it turned into.
Hopefully he is turning some corner, and might find his way onto a team. Goodluck Connor.

nice write-up
And love that we’re going to the Bellaire pipeline now.

Saw on ESPN's 'On the Trail'
ESPN’s recruiting ‘blog’ On the Trail had some Longhorn targets listed. Corey Nelson has A&M as his top school and Demarco Cobbs didn’t have us in his top 10. I guess neither is a huge surprise though missing the Top 10 on Cobbs seems strange though it was already evident his interest is us was just talk. OB had Darius White’s picture on their main page over the weekend and it didn’t sound like it was great news for us either. I thought Cobbs not having us in his top 10 (along with Reed no long being recruited) would have been a sure sign White was all-but-committed.
I suppose if we hadn’t offered Harris, Jones, and Apo already we might have ended up with none of top in-state WRs. Well, I am sure if we had just kept recruiting Trovon Reed we would have definitely gotten him out of LA or at the very least we would have found the next Juaquin Iglesias among the also-rans, since that is such a common occurrence when you miss on getting the top guys.
Rickyspub - May 5, 2009
you saw d-white’s pic up on OB and concluded it was bad news for us? i dont know what all the article actually said, but the sky is not falling… relax. we’re still months from signing day.
Displaced Longhorn - May 5, 2009
The lead in suggested it wasn't good news and the article wasn't highly rated by OB subscribers...
I noticed that Rivals had taken us out of the ‘High’ interest category for White at around the same time, so I was guessing White is no longer saying we are his top choice. Obviously, I know its early but when you have people in recruiting circles saying for months now, ‘White is lock and he will commit any day now.’ Then you notice the services knocking our chances back down to even with other schools it certainly doesn’t make it sound like it was the slam dunk everyone was making his commitment out to be. Barring further evidence, I still like our chances but the longer he remains ‘out there’ the more potential he will commit elsewhere.
Rickyspub - May 5, 2009
anything to sell a subscription, i’m not worried.
Displaced Longhorn - May 5, 2009
Supposedly there is a source who says that White
has mentioned the Longhorns much recently and that Stoops is putting on the recruiting blitz with him. Not sure that it’s anything to worry about yet, but it definitely something to keep track of.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - May 5, 2009
of course he does, if he doesn’t sway/slow down a commitment to texas… he’s not getting him. when was the last texas (not brantley) kid the longhorns legitimately had decommit that we didn’t already have better recruits coming in?
Displaced Longhorn - May 5, 2009

edsp - May 5, 2009
I think this situation sounds more like McFarland last year.
White hasn’t committed so there is no decommit to discuss.
I hope this doesn’t end up like it did last year but this situation is perhaps more akin to that of McFarland than Brantley or Perriloux. All the gurus and recruitniks said McFarland was very pro-UT and the spring and summer passed with constant buzz that he was just about to commit. Then as the season started he didn’t talk up UT as highly as he once did and then OU got into the picture and offers were made that we weren’t going to get involved with matching and the next thing you know the sure thing turned into another school’s ‘purchase’.
I certainly hope this doesn’t head in that direction, but if Stoops is offering family members perks it could quickly get out of hand.
Rickyspub - May 6, 2009
now now, just because we lost mcfarland doesn’t necessarily mean he was paid to play at OU.
and yea, it’s similar to the mcfarland situation in that he loved texas early. texas just needs to keep up with the good constant pressure, and suck his family into his love of texas and they’ll come out on top.
Displaced Longhorn - May 6, 2009
I thought the McFarland saga was well known.
Ok, I don’t know if money was what was offered but I thought people close to situation said McFarland really wanted to come to UT and his mother supposedly was in our corner initially. Then some offer was made to her by OU or boosters and when Mack refused to counteroffer she pushed hard for Jamarkus to go to OU. I am sure no one wants relive that or the Darrell Scott fiasco, but if someone who knows the details better wants to correct what I am saying go ahead.
I am also not saying this is what is going to happen in this case. I am just not so blind to the fact that recent history has shown that players who ‘love’ us early but don’t commit early can be swayed to go elsewhere, especially when other teams seem to be willing to go after parents in ways that go beyond ’we’ll give your kid a great family environment and a chance to earn a degree from a strong school’.
Rickyspub - May 6, 2009
there were alot of allegations, not alot of proof.
Displaced Longhorn - May 6, 2009
Then I don't get your confidence regarding White...
If Big Game Bob doesn’t have to even offer family members anything to get them to turn 180 degrees and get their sons to run across the border, then why would you think he would have any trouble doing the same with White? I would feel more confident that White and his family might take other programs’ “offers” as a bit seamy and therefore would make UT a better, more honest option. But if Bob is just able to woe away players and their families who were originally firmly in our court, then I wouldn’t be acting so cavalier about a top notch player suddenly deciding UT isn’t his top choice.
Rickyspub - May 6, 2009
to “woe” away players?
here’s my take on the situation. mom loved texas. oklahoma wasn’t liked. texas thought they had mcfarland in the bag and stopped pressing as hard. oklahoma was persistent. mcfarland goes to the RRS, goes to a party afterwards, his mom finds out about the drinking, women, etc. and decides that texas has too many temptations to distract her good whole-some son. she looks to the north, oklahoma is a program turning out quality players, is still actively and forcefully recruiting her son, and the school is in the middle of fucking no where with nothing to do but focus on football. she told him he’s going to oklahoma, no if ands or buts. momma’s word is final, and texas loses a top notch DT.
my confidence in white is that everything we’ve heard and seen so far has come to him loving texas. until we start hearing he’s loving other programs, i’ll be fine with his recruitment.
Displaced Longhorn - May 6, 2009
Sorry, 'woo' away...
I don’t want to be a pollyanna so I won’t say anything more on White. I hope we snag him however long it takes.
We can all have our take on JM without any definitive evidence, but I don’t think JM’s mother really thought that Norman and OU would be a temptation-free zone. I think something was offered by OU to JM’s mother (maybe it really was ‘we won’t let your kid party’, but nothing suggests she is that dumb). Call me cynical, but its hard to look at the sleazy nature of college basketball recruiting and not think that some college football programs are doing similar things in spades.
Rickyspub - May 6, 2009
There is a big difference
between saying there is cheating in college football and calling out a specific player or family without any proof.
Wells - May 7, 2009
Where there's smoke...
We will likely never have evidence…if you even tentatively follow cheating in college athletics the cases where there is real evidence are rare because everyone involved has a vested interest in keeping their mouths shut. This ain’t the mafia where the police have incentives to get people to talk. But you hear enough from former players and coaches and grad assistants over the years suggesting and outright admitting to cheating in their pasts that you can’t help but think they are the tip of the iceberg. If Thayer Evans can publish a UT hit piece in the NYT I don’t see why I can’t rehash the counter responses that suggest something was offered by OU to JM’s mother. I haven’t said this particular situation was definitely against NCAA rules, I just find it hard to believe that it wasn’t.
Rickyspub - May 7, 2009
Just because Thayer is an asshat
does not mean you should be one too.
Wells - May 7, 2009
I think JM, his mother, and Evans proved to be rather asshatty...
Since I am only doing this on a message board rather than in the NYT and other media outlets I’ll take the asshat badge with honor. The NCAA and big time college football has set up a sleazy system and if they don’t want people to make speculations based on shady dealings that get leaked to the press then they might want to think about better rules and enforcement. By the same token, if parents of HS players want to get involved with the media to hype their kid and then engage in shady behavior they can’t complain when us average-joes comment on it on a fan-message board.
Rickyspub - May 7, 2009
This comment deserves an internet

run Bevo run - May 7, 2009
the usual
if a kid texas wants commit somewhere else, that other school must be cheating. So typical.
I don’t know why y’all are crying about losing McFarland anyway; he strikes me as another Xavier Lawson-Kennedy, a highly recruited defensive tackle who isn’t going to do anything in college.
Beergut - May 8, 2009
It’s not an assumption or anything on the part of fans; it’s something that has been mentioned in some media reports.
For the record, I don’t think TAMU really cheats with recruiting, at least not anymore than UT does. I do think TAMU (and to a larger extent OU, although I do not doubt that OU cheats early and often) is less selective when it comes to character and academic issues, like with Christine Michael (or Calhoun with OU), but I don’t think many of these guys are really being wooed by Sherman or booster by lavish illegal recruiting tactics.
burntorangehorn - May 9, 2009
Displaced, your take...
might be a little more compelling if it weren’t for the infamous Thayer article… Unless he made up every single bit of that from his fervid okie imagination, the quotes and takes from mama did not fit your narrative in the least.
Pflash - May 6, 2009
really? mama didnt feel safer with her kid at oklahoma than she did at texas? taht wasn’t in the article. could you please elaborate on how what i said can’t be construed from what was written?

When are we going to get the replacement big man?
No offense to GJ or Dexy, because I think they are studly, but when is another 6’ 8"-6’10"er with talent going to roll through.
Speaking of, saw Matt Hill at the Apple store a couple of weeks ago, he could definately do better than the chick he was escorting.

looked likea big to me.Maybe not a true center but the kid is long.He is a Canadian and is a raw talent but another year at Findley should polish him up somewhat and he might grow a little more who knows.

Growth spurt
David Robinson grew five inches between his senior year and the start of his freshman season.
Caradoc - May 6, 2009
Thompson is a hybrid forward best served developing a perimeter game.
He won’t ever have the strength to play back-to-the-basket in the NBA, so he needs the versatility to be able to post up smaller players, but face up larger players an take them to the basket. He’s 6-8 and a growth spurt is possible, but he isn’t the post presence the Longhorns are looking for in one of the next two classes.
