We won't lie: we feel a little bit dirty right now. Having both grown up within two hours of Hattiesburg (one of us in Mississippi and one in Louisiana), it was tough for us to watch the Cinderella Golden Eagles choke away their first CWS game in school history last night. Don't misunderstand us: our loyalties were in no way split, nor are we in any way disappointed with the outcome. Quite to the contrary, in fact. But as fans, watching the games is all about enjoyment. And because of the way in which it happened, last night's game was one of the toughest wins to enjoy that we can remember.
Texas beat Southern Miss more on the weakness of the USM bullpen than on the strength of anything the Longhorns did. After trailing 5-4 in the eighth inning, Texas pulled out a 7-6 win in the bottom of the ninth without driving in any of those three runs on a ball in play; all three were walked in with the bases loaded. We knew how it would end once Brandon Loy worked the count to 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run 90 feet away. While all Texas fans have to be relieved with the win, the joy also has to be tempered by sympathy for Southern Miss pitcher Jonathan Johnston, who walked Kyle Lusson to load the bases with two away and then Loy for the game-winner.
While Texas' two runs in the eighth were both walked in as well, at least both men who scored--Travis Tucker and Russell Moldenhauer--had reached base via hitting the ball. In the ninth, Texas never even reached base on a ball in play; one hit batsman and three walks allowed the decisive run. In any event, though, Texas outlasted its opponent in Game One. The way the College World Series is set up, the most important key to success is to win your first two games. After that, you are completely in the driver's seat with the road leading to the championship series. With that in mind, a bit of an overall first-round review and a look ahead to the winner's bracket after the jump.

Over in Bracket One, the SEC went 2-0 on Saturday with Arkansas pulling the upset of Cal State-Fullerton and LSU using the long ball to beat Virginia. The Arkansas win did not particularly surprise us, as we have felt since the tournament bracket was announced that Fullerton had a tremendously easy road to Omaha and has not really been tested by a great team yet. Fullerton had three sub-par teams at their regional, and was paired with a very weak Louisville regional for Super weekend as well. They breezed through it, but we were (and are) still unconvinced. The good news for Fullerton, though, is that they used their number two starter against Arkansas and so they have ace Mike Leake to go against the Wahoos today. The bad news is that even with a win, they need three more in a row to make the championship series.
LSU took the same gamble as Fullerton, but it paid off for the Tigers. Number two starter Anthony Ranaudo had his worst outing of the season but was saved by the bullpen, which in this case included number one starter Louis Coleman. Coleman only threw one inning though, thanks to an eighth-inning, two-run insurance dinger off the bat of Ryan Schimpf, so Coleman will be the Tiger starter tonight against the conference rival Razorbacks.
In the Longhorns' Bracket Two, Arizona State looked scary good on the mound in knocking off North Carolina 5-2 in ten innings. Aussie starter Josh Spence dazzled for seven innings and freshman reliever Mitchell Lambson held on until the Devils finally chased Carolina's Alex White--who was as brilliant as Spence--to put up an error-assisted four-spot in the top of the tenth and sneak out with a 5-2 win. This is pretty terrible news for Texas, because like Texas, LSU, and Fullerton, Arizona State took the chance of throwing its second starter in its first game to save its ace for the winner's bracket.
This means that Texas' somewhat anemic offense will have to find ways to manufacture runs against Sun Devil ace Mike Leake. Leake was considered by most to be 2009's second-best pitcher in the country behind Stephen Strasburg, and he went eighth overall in this week's MLB draft to the Reds. The good news, of course, is that Texas will have Chance Ruffin on the hill to try and match Leake to propel Texas into a great situation. You can rest assured that Leake and his bullpen will be far less, um, charitable than the Golden Eagles were. With a win, the Longhorns will only need to win one of their next two ballgames in order to advance to the Best-of-Three championship series; a loss to AZ State, though, would force Texas to win three in a row to get there. So tomorrow night's game is absolutely huge.
First, though, Bracket One continues today. Either Virginia or Cal State-Fullerton will have the honor of being the first team sent home from Omaha today at 1 PM, with LSU and Arkansas battling for prime winner's bracket position at 6.
Enjoy the baseball!

As long as the ugly win is still legitimate, it’s definitely better than any kind of loss. That’s the case here.
burntorangehorn - June 15, 2009
Absolutely
Did not mean to imply otherwise. Texas won it fairly and without controversy, which obviously can make for even uglier wins. Ugly or not, we’re two wins away from the promised land now!
40AS - June 15, 2009
Listening to the USM coach was like watching a train wreck, kind of brutal.

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply you were saying anything of the kind. I just wanted to clarify that an ugly win is definitely better than any loss, but I added the legitimacy condition. I wouldn’t want to win by a couple of points as a result of a blown call or cheating.
Anyway, very nice write-up. This is the most fun I’ve had following a UT baseball season. It, like last football season, has turned out better than I initially expected.

Cheating is one thing...
But are you saying you would rather lose than win on a blown call?
Texas Wahoo - June 15, 2009
Some people (read: aggy) would say they are one and the same
But unless you’re buying off the umpires, I agree, there’s not much you can do about a blown call. That’s on the umpire, not the team that benefitted from the call. Besides, it’s extremely rare that that a blown call wins or loses a game entirely on its own. Sure it hurts, but 9 times out of 10, it won’t prevent you from winning the game unless you let it interfere with your ability to do your job, and that’s on you, contrary to popular opinion in the Brazos Valley.
bassale47 - June 15, 2009
That’s about right. It almost never constitutes the majority of a reason a game goes to one team or the other. I will say, though, that I’d be unable to relish a victory I didn’t earn, and having something handed to me means I didn’t earn it.

Leake vs. Spence
Am I the only one who thinks we’re better off (if one can say such a thing about either pitcher) facing Leake than Spence. It seems like we hit righties better than lefties and Spence and Leake are both amazing pitchers when healthy.

Some observations from last night's affair...
1) I’m writing a new book about the Southern Miss Bullpen, it’s tentatively titled: “Where The Wild Things Throw”
2) So many images from last night should be sent to the “anti” motivational poster syndicate post haste…my suggestion would be:
RETIRING
Because 18 year olds caused your hair to fall out.
3) Seriously, is there anything more anti-climatic than the “walk-off walk?” Maybe the “walk-off balk.” Regardless, it’s almost as bad as winning a game on a coin flip…but at least then you feel like the other team had a chance. I’m pretty sure those Souther Miss relief pitchers couldn’t find home plate if you mailed it to them.
4) Bill Simmons, please add “Failed Pitcher Face” to your pantheon of faces and credit Colin Cargill, Josh Fields, and Jonathan Johnston for their contribution.
5) If there was ever a time to have a player miked up, it would have been the Southern Miss team captain after he went to the mound to “motivate” the Eagle’s pitcher after he got behind 2-0 in the count with the bases loaded…lucky for you I read lips:
“Damn it, Joe Bob, throw a strike already.”
“Sorry, Bobby Joe, your sister’s over there in the stands. I can’t stop thinking about her.”
“Yeah, me neither…okay, let’s get two.”
6) And speaking of “Inappropriate Lip Reader Theater,” Augie said after the game that he told Loy just to leave the bat on his shoulder…that is true, but to be completely historically accurate, I believe his exact words were, “Loy, so help me God, if you even think about swinging, I’ll send you back to Austin in a FedEx Box.”
7) Ugly, brutal win…but as always, a win is a win.
Parting thought: If only Rudy Carpenter was pitching for the Sun Devils on Tuesday night…

Seriously Corky...
Every time the camera caught him in the dugout he looked like he had shit his pants and he was ashamed of himself.
Horndogger - June 15, 2009
Pretty sure they had Corky heavily sedated
The CWS didn’t want him to have a senior moment a la Don Zimmer on the way to the mound.
I also enjoyed all the shots of Augie’s red-cheeked face more…I kept thinking, “man, how cool would it be to challenge Augie to a Whiskey Drinkin’ match coupled with a test of motor skills in a ”http://arizona.fandome.com/video/20084/Revenge-of-the-Nerds-Tricycle-Race/" >tricycle race like they did Revenge Of The Nerds.
What? These are things I think about.

Classic....love it 54b.
Did anybody else think Corky’s wife shopped at the same store as Davy Crockett?
SneezyBeltran - June 15, 2009
I think she goes to the same barber too. nt

You guys are brutal
Palmer and his wife were quite the characters though.

Nobody Felt Bad For The Horns
when we lost the lead on catcher interferance passed balls walks etc.
So why should we feel bad when we regained the lead the same way.
Loy’s great play saved us a run and that got us back in the game.
As Augie said “It’s about runs not hits.”
TCB Orange Dino - June 15, 2009
I was going to post the same thing
Not to mention the fact that being patient at the plate and playing smallball are 2 of this teams strengths.
Would Leake have already received his signing bonus? Maybe he’ll be too busy thinking about it on the mound tomorrow.
Horncasting - June 15, 2009
If he does receive it ahead of time, he’ll be busy thinking about it from the stands due to ineligibility. Let’s hope his agent is the impatient type.
burntorangehorn - June 15, 2009
CSF trailing Virginia 4-3 in the 5th. Could the 2 seed be the first out?
patienthornsfan - June 15, 2009
6-3 now in the bottom of the 6th
Not just the 2 seed – but the team most considered the favorite.
Texas Wahoo - June 15, 2009
If only Arky can muster up some courage and knock off the Cajuns later
bassale47 - June 15, 2009
Now it's 7-3
Texas Wahoo - June 15, 2009
Everyone in UVA's lineup today is batting 0.299 or better...
That’s pretty good, no matter who they’ve been playing.
Texas Wahoo - June 15, 2009
Ugly win indeed...
but I am a bit concerned for Austin Wood…it seems like he is still fatigued from BC outing
he has been relying too much on off speeds and he has been subpar for past two outings now.
When we go up 1-2 runs in 7th and 8th, the bullpen have to protect the lead
hookemkp - June 15, 2009
Wood
The ball left the infield once on him (to start the 9th). He walked two guys on very close pitches. A guy got on on catcher’s interference, one run scored on an error, then he came back and got two big strikeouts. It wasn’t his finest effort but I’m not so sure bad luck isn’t more to blame than fatigue from BC…although there’s no way to prove either hypothesis really.
40AS - June 15, 2009
Wood has always relied on offspeed pitches and location
He has never been a high strikeout pitcher. It’s just not his game. People have created this mythical fantasy pitcher in their minds, aided largely by the media, ever since the BC game. Austin Wood is a good college pitcher who gave a superhuman effort 2 weeks ago, and it will always be one of my favorite UT sports memories. I have nothing but respect for the guy and the way he plays the game. But it is unlikely that he will ever match what he did in that game, and it is unfair to him for people to expect him to repeat it every time he steps on the mound. It is time for people to get back to reality about what he is and isn’t capable of.
bassale47 - June 15, 2009
#2 seed is out
I bet Fullerton would of taken an ugly win instead of being eliminated in 2 straight games!
texascfo - June 15, 2009
College baseball is ugly (but fun)
What can I say? Metal bats. Plastic fields. Horrible pitching. And to think this is the best they have to offer…
But on the other hand, the kids are enthusiastic and the crowd gets into it. And in amongst those who have been passed over by the bigs, there are a few late bloomers who make it. And then you get to say, “I saw him back in college.”
Caradoc - June 15, 2009
As with basketball, it’s still a whole lot more fun than the “pro” incarnation!
burntorangehorn - June 15, 2009
PS football too
burntorangehorn - June 15, 2009
Close call on that one
Caradoc - June 15, 2009
There’s so little innovation, imagination, and deviation in the pro game these days that I find the offenses almost universally bland. Plus, all the dumb rules (pampering QBs, overtime, watered-down playoffs, etc.) make it kind of a bore to watch. Defenses can be great, but the league’s been doing its damnedest to handicap them.
burntorangehorn - June 15, 2009

No Such Thing as an Ugly Win
Baseball has always been a game where momentum starts and ends on the bump in the middle of the field. I will be that Chance Ruffin and Leake put the hammer down and we have a well played 2-1 game.
realmccoy - June 16, 2009
I certainly hope so
I’ve been trying to get a few of my friends into college baseball (they always pull the aluminum bat excuse), and Sunday night’s game did not help my cause at all.
bassale47 - June 16, 2009
The aluminum bat and DH are my only two problems with college baseball. Those are the only two things MLB (specifically the NL) has on NCAA baseball IMO.
