Horns Win Incredible Come From Behind Victory Over ASU

Anyone who saw Texas fall behind to Arizona State 6-0 with ASU ace Mike Leake on the mound and wasn't pessimistic about the prospects for a win is a better fan than us. Thanks to 10 unanswered runs and an amazing 10-6 victory, including 5.2 innings of 2-hit ball by freshman Taylor Jungmann, Texas is in the driver's seat in their half of the CWS bracket. This team may not having any All-Americans, it may not having many sluggers, but it just wins. We'll be up with a more complete wrap up tomorrow, but consider this your celebration thread and try to answer the question: where does this win rank for you?

I'll be honest

Down 6-0 and playing sloppy as hell, I was embarrassed….That speech by Augie was clutch, and I’m glad that as disappointed as I was, I NEVER stopped watching…..

Hook ’em. Proud night to be a Horns fan!

I love this team!!

They like to make it close but man it makes the win that much sweeter!

Has a team ever won so many memorable games in one postseason? I don’t know where this particular one ranks. Behind the BC game, obviously. Beyond that, I don’t know. What I do know is that Augie’s speech and the team’s immediate response to it, coming back in a game in which a victory was all but impossible — it’s the stuff of legend. We’ll remember it forever — especially if this team gets three more wins.

Does anyone know where I can get a miniture Augie statue to put on my mantel and burn incense to?

Honestly, he knew exactly what to tell these boys. There was a lot of question about whether the Lakers could have won it all without Phil Jackson, but I think that there is no comeback with anyone else but Augie in the dugout. I saw some talk earlier about not wanting to face some of the other teams in this tournament, but after tonight, I feel completely confident this team will give anything and everything to get the victory.

Top 1: (Reserved for the coming Championship series games)

Top 2: 25 innings BC game

Top 3: The remarkable came from behind ASU game

Our dream is alive and well…..Hook’em!

Who do we play next?

What do the pitching situations look like NC and ASU in the next game and against us?

If UNC wins, White (their ace) may be ready to pitch.

A frightening prospect with Dustin Ackley backing him up.

I’m not so sure about ASU, but their #2 pitcher (almost as good as Leake) might be ready to go against us.

I continued

watching but was very pessimistic with our sloppy defense, Leak on the mound (didn’t help that Orel and Sean had their heads so far up Leak’s ass from so much ass-kissing), and the our anemic-at-times offense.

Augie is a god when it comes to motivation. I like how he commented on how much better the highlights would be after they came back. That ranks right up there with Mack (I’m referring to the comeback against Okie Stat).

Did anyone besides me catch how the Horns seemed to gel or get in the groove once Cameron hit the homerun?? Even though they were still down by 3 you could just tell the players felt relieved or in-sync. After that they defense played better, the pitching improved, and the batters were relaxed. I think they were nervous/anxious/out of sync against So Miss. I don’t know if it was the layoff since the Super Regional, jitters, nervous……whatever. After the homerun they all just clicked.

You have to think

Ruffin will be the starter on Friday. Let’s hope he’s clicking because in my opinion we’ll be playing UNC and they just hit up and down the lineup.

How is it possible that like every ASU batter hits better than .300?
Aluminum bats

And batter-friendly parks. Packard, where ASU plays, is particularly favorable to batters. It’s like the Yanker’s new stadium.

I'm ashamed to admit...

When the Horns went down 6-0 I figured that was a good time to cook some dinner. I kept the game on in the background but I have to admit I was feeling pessimistic. I should have known this team is different, special. This is a group of players that define exactly what it means to be a TEAM.

I love these guys.

Gotta love RMHorn
Talk about choke, if this team doesn’t pull it together for their run through the loser’s bracket then this will be one of the lowest achieving Longhorn CWS appearances EVER. I’m sick of this embarrassing display, time to kick out 40 miles on the bike, this game is over, no magic happening today against the ASU pitching staff. Disgusting!!!
That ranks up there with greenspointexas
if we beat OU, i will personally tape myself hitting myself in the face with a glass bottle and put it on youtube for yall to watch

but theres no way its gonna happen… yall know it to… 2 words: BLAKE GRIFFIN

Since you picked out that one, how ’bout context from my other posts:

LOL

Obviously tuned in late and not paying as close attention as I should have. Still a terrible outing for the entire team, that 3-run HR being the only exception. Maybe I stay close to the tv for a little bit longer as a result of it, though. That blown throw from the catcher just really pissed me off, what a friggin’ numskull bit of team communication that crap was!

Wow!! Mea Culpa!

Forget the bike ride

5 More Outs

Aside from how bad it looked early on – bad enough to get real defeatist – the only bad thing about this game is the announcers fixating on the "Sound of Music", the MLB draft and bonus money for guys not even playing in this game. These announcers are really terrible, a distraction from a great game.

Combined with a quote from 40AS:

Anyone who saw Texas fall behind to Arizona State 6-0 with ASU ace Mike Leake on the mound and wasn’t pessimistic about the prospects for a win is a better fan than us.
You can’t say I was expressing anything different than most anyone was feeling.

Let it be, GFTC, unless you want to start the nasty insults and snarky stalking posts of basketball season all over again. If you want to carry forward the ugliness expressed over the winter I’ll oblige; or just letting it go without you being a jackass would be my preference.

Ironic

you calling someone else a jackass

There You Go Again

I said you were BEING a jackass by making pulling out my early pessimistic post from nearly 1000 posts, which you were being. I never called you out as the jackass that you actually are until now – is this really the path you want to go down here on BON all over again?

I have a hard time holding and keeping a grudge alive, creates far too much negative energy. Obviously you hold them given that I haven’t made a post here on BON since March, and not had any communication with you since February or earlier. I’m quite capable of letting bygones be bygones until a jackass like you wants to always drudge up old battles to stir up new ones.

Friggin’ loser, your kind belongs in Oklahoma or College Station!

You are THAT guy

The one when getting mad, posts in the Statesman, “Go back to Cali or Dallas where you belong”.
Metaphor time: “I didn’t stab him/her/it with a knife, I cut him/her/it with an axe, big difference.” Just fess up, say you were wrong for what you said, let this roll of your back, for christ’s sake try to lighten up a bit about the game moving forward and the attacks will go away. It’s okay to love the Horn’s more than any other team, it’s not okay for an adult to pack up his toys and leave the playground when you don’t get your way.
Take it or leave it, whatever. Hook ’em on Friday real hard!!!!!!

Neutral observer here

I was following BON on my Blackberry during the game due to work, so I couldn’t comment, and I was only able to read the comments from the beginning of the game after we had tied it at 6-6, so it was quite funny to read some of the “sky is falling” comments knowing what would happen.

But RMHorn, I’ll hand it to ya, your comment was so over the top with you being “sick” of the “embarrassing display” by this “lowest achieving Longhorn CWS team” that it stood head and shoulders beyond what anyone else posted. I had to double back and re-read it to ensure that a Horns fan had really written such drivel. Congrats on a job well done!

Yeah, I Can Get Pretty Emotional

:)

Hook ’em Horns ]-

I felt the same way

Just didn’t write it. And, thankfully, I was wrong as well.

And, Be Accurate in the Quote You Cite

I said “if they don’t pull it together…then this will be one of the lowest achieving Longhorn CWS appearances”. That has a much different meaning than what you claim came from me in your post above in calling them the “lowest achieving Longhorn CWS team”.

I’ll gladly take my licks and do my mea culpa for what I write, but not for what someone else conjures up and tries to put in my mouth.

I was quoting accurately...

…but if you want to play that game:

You can’t say I was expressing anything different than most anyone was feeling.

You know what? I can say that. And I bet most of the BON posters can say likewise.

When we were down 6-0, I was certainly disappointed, but the thought that this would be “one of the lowest achieving Longhorn CWS appearances EVER” if we failed to come back and win never crossed my mind. Lord knows what you thought of the 2000 two-and-done team. How could players on that team live with themselves?

I was never “sick of this embarrassing display.” And I never found the game I was following to be “Disgusting!!!”

But, hey, if you want to justify your rant by saying everyone else was feeling the same way, be my guest.

I Never Understand How People Pretend

Look, the FACTS are the FACTS.

My quote:

Talk about choke, if this team doesn’t pull it together for their run through the loser’s bracket then this will be one of the lowest achieving Longhorn CWS appearances EVER. I’m sick of this embarrassing display, time to kick out 40 miles on the bike, this game is over, no magic happening today against the ASU pitching staff. Disgusting!!!

Your quote you attribute to me:

"sick" of the "embarrassing display" by this "lowest achieving Longhorn CWS team"

Those mean two very distinctly different things, my quote is conditional upon no improvement in the ultimate game outcome (it improved), your quote has me slamming them unconditionally and extract from two different sentences to make it read in an absolutely different way than it was originally written.

I never understand the audacity of people who assert a fact like you did in claiming you were “quoting accurately” when the facts are visible and readily available with time stamps all through these UT/ASU posts for non-participants to read and check the veracity of competing claims. You quoting me inaccurately as demonstrated above and on three BON threads and then pretending that by re-asserting your own quote as coming from me is very disingenuous. Readers have the evidence before them to prove the FACTS I have put forward trump the false claims you assert.

kjm, I have no beef with you other than wanting to be quoted accurately. I own my comments, not YOURS.

I stand by the comment I made about it being an “embarrassing display” when the catcher throws to 2nd base with no infielder within 20 feet of the bag and coughing up 6 runs with nary a competitive bit of competitive play coming out of the team in the first three innings. And few other BON posters and Texas fans disagreed AT THE TIME. It was “disgusting” to watch. And while I don’t remember the specifics of the 2000 team, I doubt they came in as the national #1 seed. Nonetheless, my comment along with being conditional on the ultimate outcome never would have proclaimed them “the lowest achieving…ever”, rather “one of the lowest achieving…ever”, which would have allowed for a team like 2000’s to share the infamy with – had it played out differently.

KJM, let’s continue to cheer on this team of destiny to their 3rd NC of the decade. If they F-up during a game and even the faithful begin to lose faith so be it, it’s not a capital crime or a sign that you or anyone is a “better” fan than another. We all express our disappointment in our team differently. I’m no better a Longhorn fan than you are and you’re no better Longhorn fan than I.

Hook ’em Horns ]-

Tucker's bunt single + ASU error was huge!!

I bet a bunt was the last thing on Leake’s mind.
Yes, this team might not be very talented but they are very disciplined at the plate and believe in themselves.

I was VERY surprised/pleased by Brandon Belt bunting two at bats in a row. He was having a pretty good at bats in previous innings (drove in 2 runs in 4th). This guy got drafted and will be playing in pros next year, but he put his team ahead of his own ambition/selfishness.

Who Cares?!?!?!

All this team does is win… THAT’S what it is all about. Rankings are for amateurs……….

Forced Errors

Regarding that bunt that Leake spent 4 and a half months chasing down…

I wonder if a stat like “errors against” is kept. I bet we (for all the ill-advised bunting we do) force a lot of errors and error-given base hits out opposing defenses. Anyone doing an analysis on whether bunting is worth it has got to take this into account.

that's the point of "small ball"

it puts pressure on the defense to make the plays and get the outs. With that said, i was suprised that Auggie didn’t bunt Belt in the 1st inning. It worked out, we found a way to win with leaving so many men on base.

This team has so much grit to it

Winning a 25 inning game, a walk off granny, an unlikely comeback against one of the best pitchers in college baseball… what is this, a cheesy Hollywood movie? We may not have the sexiest team, but dang it, I feel like we can beat anyone, anywhere, and most importantly, in any conceivable way.

My MVP goes to Jungmann

for giving us a chance to come back in the first place with 5.2 shutout IP

ESPN #$%*&^%

Thje game was announced as being on ESPN 2.I tivoed it and got the World Sereis of Poker. When I finally found the game the score was 7 – 6.

So I felt none of the frustration others may have had.

Jungman was money.

Augie did his magic once again. He just seems to have an innate sense on what moves to make.He amazes us all with his magic moves at Omaha.

We now have a real shot at winning the whole thing.Whod a thuynk it after the Kansas and kansas State series.I guess it shows that second guessing Augie and this team is ridiculous.

ESPN mobile acted up as well

Following on my Blackberry, the score went from 6-0 to 6-6 to . . . Texas 6-4. I knew I had to stop working and get to a bar at that point to see how ASU lost two runs!

Jungman was that good.

I never worried

Sam Barron was my roommate through the 30-game win streak and one of Texas’ all-time great sports fans. He died in ’86, aged 39. His drink was J&B.

So, whenever a big game comes along, I pull out my UT tumbler and pour myself a J&B. Take a sip just before kickoff/first pitch/tipoff, make the hook ’em and say a little prayer to Sam.

Never fails. Worked in the 2005 Rose Bowl for instance. I never worried this evening, although I will admit that, top of the 4th, I thought we might be playing our way back to the championship out of the loser’s bracket.

Wow..

I stopped watching after 3rd inning. Left home pissed. I can’t believe we came back. I can’t believe I missed the comeback.. I guess that’s what I deserve. wow..

Going to omaha

Well thanks to this game, me and my buddies are headed up to Omaha on Thursday. does anyone know where texas fans are congregating up there? I can’t believe this team, 25 inning game, walk off grand slam, walk off walk, then this? clearly, this team is destined to go all the way, or at least they can’t blame team chemistry if they don’t.

ESPN Articles

ESPN

One guy was so frustrated that he started talking to his glove. Another fired the ball to second base, only there wasn’t anybody covering second base. Things couldn’t have looked much worse for the Texas baseball team at the start of Tuesday night.

But here’s the thing about these Longhorns — they’ve been through just about everything in the last month, from a 25-inning NCAA tournament game to a near upset last weekend at the College World Series. So how bad could a six-run deficit be?

ESPN again

“For the team to find a way to win,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said, “was nothing short of a miracle. It was quite a testimony to the power of their will to win and belief in each other and belief in themselves. It was rough and it was ugly, but it got done.”

Has any other Texas team relied more on the “will to win” than this year’s squad? We may or may not have the best and deepest pitching staff in the country this year, but we clearly have the biggest heart. Shame that’s not on the stat sheet.

I was among the doubters

Down 6-0 in the third, I was tempted to turn the TV off, but I never do that when it’s the ‘Horns. Half an inning later, with the score tied, my nephew — a Sooner alum no less — chastised me for doubting the team. How’s that for embarrassing? A great night for Texas sports.

What a game

I was ready to crucify Rupp after the first three innings, but what a game he ended up having. Augie has to be planning on starting Jungmann if we make the finals, right?

Where does this rank?

What a game. I was picking up some wings when ASU went ahead 6-0. Got home and didn’t even bother turning the game on. After a while, I turned to ESPN to see the score, hoping it was over and was shocked beyond belief that the ’Horns were back and up 8-6. Add two more runs that inning and I was screaming.

This game ranks right up there with the Rice game a few years back in the CWS where Texas won on some crazy play (don’t remember the play exactly). Think the final was 2-1. Anyway, this is one of the better games I’ve seen.

Down 6-0

I was in full scowl mode, but the buddy I was with would have nothing with it. Soon as we got 2 on in the 4th he called it: three-run dong and we’re tied within the rest of this beer (pointing to our drinks). He was wrong — I finished my beer awful quick — but not by much.

Hook ’em!!

I agree with GFTC...

Jungmann was MVP last night, he really settle the team down with his pitching…..defense seemed to settle down with him.

He’s the pitcher to go to right now since he’s in the zone………if we get in another elimination game at some point…….he has to start.

Gah!

Worked until 7.

Heard Horns were down 4-0 during sports update on drive home.

Got back, turned on the TV right after Brandon Belt singled and ESPN ran the inning to date recap.

Kept seeing the Mike Leake shell-shocked face.

Watched Moldenhauer and Keyes make outs.

Had to leave for dinner plans.

Missed rest of game.

Couldn’t check ESPN on phone because they weren’t updating the scores (it still said ASU 6-3).

Came back.

Checked ESPN.com.

Saw the Horns won.

Awesome.

Gah! X 2

I saw them go down 5-0, and watched them shoot themselves in the foot in every manner I though possible. I thought “oh no, they are gonna get shellacked”, then I turned the game back on a little later and and it was 6-6. 10-6 final score… amazing. Hook’em Horns!!!

LSU and Texas are sitting at 2 – 0. Everybody else is playing elimnation games. At this point it looks good about getting to the title round. At least we’ll still be playing after half the teams have gone home.

The deficit could've been my fault...wrong shirt.

My Big XII Football Champ. shirt was the only clean burnt orange I had last night. I’m typically not superstitious, but I was hesitant to wear it since I also had it on during our loss to TCU in the super regional. Anyway, once the score reached 6-0 it had to go. I wasn’t quite back from my room when the first home run was hit. Sweetness.

I forgive you

But that shirt better stay in your hamper for another week or so. Did you change into a dirty UT shirt in the 4th?

Don't worry, it's only for football from here on out.

Actually, I just went with the belt since I was headed downtown.

So a bracket win puts UT at 49, and a CWS win would put the team at 51 for the season. Anyone know what the team record is?

Team record will never be broken

The team record for wins is 66 in 1983, when we played 80 total games. With the condensed schedule, this record will be untouchable. Still, 51-14-1 would be great with me!

Holy crapola, lots of MLB teams don’t get 66 wins each year. Well, I guess it’s hard to compare between eras with such changes, like the modern-day passing record threats vs. the standing records from when bowl games, conference championship games, and a 12th regular-season game didn’t inflate the stats so much.
