Taylor Jungmann. Here's a mental exercise for ya: name a Longhorn in any sport who has had as gutsy a performance when his team desperately needed a superhuman effort in an absolutely must win game. Who'd you come up with? Us too.
Remember what you're wearing and where you were tonight. Same place, same attire tomorrow night. 9 innings from those 4 little words from Craig Way.

Austin Wood?

Meant in a do or die situation, but Wood fits that criteria…edited :-)

Vince Young!
Hook ’em Horns!
Sunkist - June 23, 2009
I second/third Vince Young.
But to do this as a freshman is nuts. NUTS.
And the entire game to show no weakness, no fatiguing, just going right at batters pitch after pitch — that is some gutsy play.
pleaseplaykindle - June 23, 2009
Jungmann was huge tonight
Biggest game of his life to this point, I’m sure, & he responds w/ an equally large performance against a very good team. He must be on cloud 9 right now. Good for him.

Play by play
Everytime I attempt to do this (since semi-finals of Big 12 tourny) I have been at work on my compluter, wearing my firefighters class A uniform with my white UT undershirt, UT socks, and a UT cap. The horns have only lost 2 games since then, and both of those games I havent been online for (TCU & LSU).
And I’m working tomorrow night as well.
kriess - June 23, 2009
Try an orange undershirt (if regulations allow). nt
whills - June 23, 2009
yeah.
wore it when UT beat ASU with 2 hr’s in the 9th. But the white undershirt always leads UT to win easily, whereas the orange usually makes us win in heart attack fashion. I dont want that again…lol

On SportsCenter, the stats for the CWS Final so far:
LSU Texas
Runs 8 11
HR 2 7
BA .216 .276
ERA 4.95 3.15
No reason Texas shouldn’t take it all tomorrow.

You hear the comment when they were showing Les Miles?
They were talking about Miles tweeting and then cut to Moldy’s home run and said “Tweet This”.

That was just amazing
I mean, we’re talking a complete game shutout if not for the errors. Against LSU, a team full of big bats. I think even Tiger fans just have to tip their hat to him, because they know they got it handed to them and they’re just glad they’re not facing him again.
This also gives our entire bullpen some rest after that long game last night, and hopefully, some more time to get their heads straight so they can find the strike zone.
TheElusiveShadow - June 23, 2009
Five LSU pitchers used, one UT pitcher used, plus the momentum is there. I like the way the breeze is blowing.

Man, Mainieri is really trying to hype Ranaudo for tomorrow in the postgame PC
Essentially calling him their best pitcher.
And their one relief pitcher who held us in check the most is quite the arrogant ass.

Hmmmm, doesn't seem to know how to low ball this particular situation.
Could be that LSU has only been ahead so far in two game just a couple of innings. So he’s pumping sunshine to avoid the harsh truth.

If Texas wins the Title tonight...
Few could argue that Jungmann wasn’t the reason. After almost our entire bullpen played in Game #1’s extra inning loss, he allowed our bullpen to stay on the bench and rest up for tonight’s game. If it turns into a slobber-knocker like Game #1 was, our bullpen may be needed early and often. I almost think by the 6th innining if we are up, we turn the last 4 innings into an All-Star game and pitch a fresh arm each inning to keep their bats cold.
Great two games so far! Here’s to another National Title for Texas!
Robertpz - June 24, 2009
I'm expecting a low scoring game
Cole Green has had 2 great starts in Omaha. Anthony Ranaudo hasn’t been quite as consistent, but he’s still a great pitcher. Big guy, mid-90s fastball that he relies on but can throw some offspeed stuff too. High strike-out pitcher but rarely goes more than 6 innings. They bring in Louis Coleman to relieve him frequently, and Paul Mainieri hinted at that last night, so expect to see it tonight. Ranaudo reminds me a bit of Brandon Workman but more polished. He struggled against Virginia in LSU’s opener. Only lasted 3 and a third, gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and walked 4. But he was very solid against Arky last Friday. Threw six scoreless innings, gave up 4 hits, struck out 5.
Gonna be a battle for this one. Hopefully Green can give us some strong innings and the bullpen doesn’t crap out on us like they did in Game 1. I would imagine everyone not named Taylor Jungmann will be available tonight. Unfortunately, I will have to miss the first 5 to 6 innings, depending on how fast the game moves. Freaking accounting test tonight.

Pretty good stuff. Made my morning. Frankly better commentary than ESPN. But what isn’t. My first stop this morning was another rant on the ESPN site about their poor announcers. I still think they should sub them out in the sixth inning or sooner if they aren’t doing their job or if they mention “tweets”.

20 innings played
Texas has had the lead for 14 of the 20, LSU 4 and only two innings tied – game 1 for 9th and 10th innings.

Of course not. No way they’ll actually cover sports. There’s too much poker and auto racing to be analyzed.

This is what I love about college baseball (and basketball)
A do or die NC game that has been earned via playing on the field between two talented and evenly matched, well coached teams.
Shame on college football for denying this same level of playoff excitement.

LSU athletics and fans
I grew up in Louisiana and have been to countless LSU football and basketball games growing up… they’ll always have a special place in my heart, and I’d be cheering them on if they were playing against any other team.
At least one side of my family is probably going to disown me after the Horns pull out the win tonight.
I just wanted to throw it out there, the Tiger fans take LSU athletics very seriously, and in a lot of ways it’s similar to the Texas fanbase. Lots of tradition, history, tailgating, legendary players (Billy Cannon, Pete Maravich…), passionately devoted fans (not just the fair-weather kind, lord knows they were not that great when I was growing up in the 80’s – but I did get to meet Shaq at my aunt’s tailgate party once). If you’ve never seen a football game in Baton Rouge, you should do that before you die. Trust me.
They have a lot of fans up in Omaha that just want to see their team win, and I hope we can all respect them for that.
So, may the best team (in Burnt Orange) win!!
SelimSivad - June 24, 2009
Bobby Layne
If you want to go way back to the Longhorns’ 1948 Sugar Bowl victory against No. 6 Alabama, in the 40-27 victory, Layne accounted for every point, scoring four touchdowns, kicking four extra points and passing for the other two touchdowns. Layne’s 28 points scored in that game stood as the Longhorn record for more than 30 years before Ricky Williams broke it in 1997.

These were probably the biggest clutch, do-or-die individual plays I have ever seen:
VY vs. KU
VY vs. USC
And then of course there was that entire VY performance against Michigan. That was incredible. As far as full-game performances go, I’m not sure whether the Jungmann performance beats out that one, but it doesn’t really matter. TJ’s game last night was the best clutch performance I’ve seen in college baseball.
