THE EYES OF TEXAS 2009

This year's annual is, like the last two, divided into three sections. The first 60 pages of the annual are devoted to previewing the upcoming season, the next 30 pages cover the program from a big picture perspective, and the final third of the magazine is, once more, dedicated to Longhorns history and traditions.

PART ONE: 2009 ORIENTATION

1. Roster Preview (PB) -- A position-by-position breakdown of the 2009 Longhorns, with emphasis on key analytical questions surrounding each group of players.

2. The 2009 Freshman Class (Bobby Bragg, Burnt Orange Beat) -- An analysis of the newest Longhorns on the 40 Acres by the scouting experts at Burnt Orange Beat.

3. Opponent Previews (Big Roy) -- Single page spreads dedicated to UL-M, Wyoming, UTEP, Colorado, and Baylor, and two full pages of analysis on Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Texas A&M.

4. Road Trips and Travel Tips (54b) -- No one road trips like 54b. He tells you how to join him on the road to the Rose Bowl.

5. Garrett Gilbert Profile (Big Roy) -- Meet the heir apparent.

6. Colt McCoy Career Perspective (billyzane) -- How a skinny three-star quarterback became as remarkable in his own way as was his legendary predecessor.

7. Fixing the Running Game (Big Roy) -- It needs to happen. Big Roy has some ideas how to get there.

PART TWO: SURGING FORWARD

8. Sea Change in the Red River (PB and 54b) -- From the unthinkable low of 2004, Texas is on the brink of delivering a potential knockout to "Big Game" Bob Stoops. How it happened and why this fall's game is the biggest yet.

9. The Triumph of Mack Brown (40 Acres Sports) -- You know Jeff and Abram from their great baseball coverage, but here they provide a terrific look at the particular ways Mack Brown has evolved to meet the highest of expectations.

10. Who is Greg Davis? (Chris Brown, Smart Football) -- You hate Greg Davis, don't you. But do you understand what he's doing? Chris Brown breaks down the X's and O's.

11. Burnt Orange Gold (Horn Brain) -- Where do the best recruits in the state of Texas come from? And where do they go to school? Horn Brain takes a comprehensive look at Texas recruiting from a macro perspective.

12. We're Texas (PB) -- How a particular form of Texas pride has hurt the program over the last 40 years, and why Mack Brown has brought the program to the brink of a level of success not seen since the Royal era.

PART THREE: LONGHORNS HISTORY AND TRADITIONS

13. Integrating Texas (Keith Heugatter, Barking Carnival) -- Keith masterfully tells the important story about the long road to integrating the football program at UT.

14. The Underappreciated (Adam Jones, Rose Bowl Dreams and Jones Top Ten) -- Adam Jones looks back at the last 11 years of Texas football in a search for the most underappreciated 'Horns of the Mack Brown era.

15. Red River Shootout History (whills) -- An epic look at the greatest rivalry in college football, from the earliest days of Longhorns dominance, to the remarkable OU runs in the 50s and 70s, to the present day duel between Mack Brown and Bob Stoops. With an afterword interview with Bob Stoops, from our own dimecoverage.

16. Elevating the Atmosphere (txtwstr7) -- Why is DKR so quiet? And what can be done to bring it to life? Txtwstr7 takes a look.

17. The Final Word (54b) -- Recovering from the BCS near-miss, 54b is (still) feeling good about bleeding orange.

I hope the girlfriend doesn't mind me reading at the table.

Because tonight I’m bringing a third to our date. She’ll be wearing burnt orange, know more about sports than me, and strangely enough, be the (brain) child of PB.

damn

that actually sounds pretty good.

I’d probably buy one… if.. you know, it weren’t about you. :)

Even if this was about Nebraska I would buy it.

I mean, not about OU but maybe Nebraska. It would probably be about 1/10 of the size but that’s cool.

Excellence.

Pure brilliance PB and company. Can’t wait to get my hands on one.

Sweet!

Going on vaca this weekend and need to grab this first. Honey, you go on to the pool, I’m going to sit here and dream. Anyone seen this at HEB yet? Seems like it took a few days/weeks last year.

I bought it this weekend.

At HEB on Brodie, emailed PB to let him know it was offically out. They must get them out early there, because the same thing happend last year.

Any word on HEB at Hancock on 41st/Red River?
Gonna go there this afternoon

I’ll let you know if it’s there

Yup

It’s there

Excellent, thanks.
Wow, excellent list of authors - congrats on another issue
Cant Wait !!!!

My mom will visit me here in Okc from San Antonio, going to have her grab me one from HEB. What time is it???

4:37 EST... and OU _still_ sucks!
Every year...

This is when first-time readers of the magazine figure out that I am not in fact Billy Zane, the (sometimes?) actor. Or named Billy Zane at all, for that matter. It must be shocking to pull back that veil and I sympathize with anyone who’s frightened right now.

Wait,

You’re not the real Billy Zane? I feel cheated.

You mean PB != Paul Begala?

duped again.

Got one...

I got one from Walmart. This coming season will be very exciting. I know we should take one game at a time but my eyes have already set ahead on the Rose Bowl this year :)

Hook’em!

Shipping to Canada?

Hey PB,

I would love to order the book. However, I moved to Vancouver, BC a year ago and I’m not sure if the website will deliver to Canada. Do us Longhorn exports have any internaitonal shipping options?

Btw, as always, Thanks for this awesome site you work soo hard to maintain. It is one of the few ways I have to keep in touch with everything Longhorns.

Hook Em!

Yup

Will ship to Canada!

Ordered mine today. nt whills
South Texas?

Will this book be at HEB locations statewide? Or is it just an “Austin Thang”?

my bad

It does say “newsstands across the state” …going to check right now…

wow...

I’m anxious to get one. Will do after I get off from work. Football season needs to step on the pedal and get here. This season, the mag should be called, “All Eyes On Texas” because literally.
Its gonna be a hell of a season. Let us prepare for glory

Kroger's here (West Houston) has magazine

Special props to Adam Jones and his Mack’s Unsung Heroes. I love this stuff, and it’s good to remember again Robbie Doane, Ahmad Brooks, Drew Kelson and Cullen Loeffler, among others. Thanks PB & Co.

Has anyone seen them in Dallas yet?

I have not had a chance to look. I just want to make sure I can get one at the neighborhood Wal-mart

I bought mine at the 7-Eleven....

…..on N.Lamar just across from the intramural fields.

Best line 43 pages in...

Coaches loved Angus Quigley’s physical destruction of Blake Gideon so much they subsequently moved him to linebacker, where he is still learning the position, though it is safe to assume that Gideon supports the move.

In case you forgot about the hit that GoBR is referencing, you can see it here

I bought mine right away

and still haven’t read any articles…I looked through it twice but just at all the great photos. Can’t wait to get some real time to read it start to finish. Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into it. I am really interested to read more especially about the play charts since I know very little about that and woudl like to learn more.

Excellent publication

Read it cover to cover.
