It wasn't always pretty, but a win it was. Survive and advance, right? Right. All things considered, a satisfying win, even if that level of play won't win 'em all.
Credit to Tech for showing up to play. Potts and his receivers were tough in defeat, while their undermanned defense made Texas earn it.

Defense was stellar
Colt’s high throws and the dropped pass by Malcolm made the game closer. This is correctable. We are in good shape. With easy victories against UTEP and Colorado, we should have a ton of momentum going into the OU game.

I think it's fair to say
this is not the 2009 edition we were anticipating. There’s a lot of football left to be played, but this team has been far from dominant. Still, kudos on the win. On to the next one. Beats being USC right now.

“I didn’t really think Kindle was going to get to him anyway. I can think of ten different plays that could have gone the other way and makes the outcome different.”
That would be awesome!

That was amazing
Aside from the helmet hit, Potts may actually be lucky Kindle hit him so flat — I kind of shudder to think what could have happened if Kindle had plowed into Potts’ midsection; #2 is big enough that he doesn’t need to lead w/ his helmet to do some serious damage
godelmetric - September 19, 2009
Potts is lucky to be alive
Kindle took it easy on him. He could of been out for the season with a free blind side hit like that.

TXStampede - September 19, 2009
I don't know
that you can call the defense stellar. Potts had over 400 passing yards and they scored 24 points, but then, for Tech, that is sub-par.
SwimTexas - September 19, 2009
well if we had some kind of offense in the first half along with our stellar defense
this game would have been over in first half…our DLs definitely got tired of bullrushing on every single down in 3rd and 4th quarter. I think Muschamp wasnt going for the style points and was willing to take 2-3 min off the clock in the 4th quarter in exchange of a TD
hookemkp - September 19, 2009
Holding Tech to 24 will get the win
damn near every time. If the offense was worth a damn in the first half this game wouldn’t have been close.
ctex80 - September 19, 2009
The lack of DT and DB depth was exposed
Houston and Randall started slowing down and the pass rush began to suffer quite a bit. The secondary became tired enough Nolan Brewster looked quick by comparison.
Beasley will help as a warm body, and Scott could make a helluva difference if the D has to play so much in the future. Maybe one of the freshmen will grow up quick at DT
learned hand - September 19, 2009
Yeah, this will be key against OU
They will run their up tempo offensive to try and wear us out.
cj43 - September 19, 2009
He also threw a ton of times
I think he finished with a respectable yards per attempt, but at one point in the game Potts was averaging less than 6 yards per pass. Unfortunately, our secondary wasn’t very sharp in the second half.
TheElusiveShadow - September 20, 2009
Should have been a masacre
I mean our defense did it for us the 1st half. If our O did what they had to do, it would have been a better win. Well, at least the #1 team didn’t do so hot either.

Javi - September 19, 2009 via mobile
Couldn't the same thing be said about Tech though?
Our D was also great in the first half, if our O plays how they normally do, we probably get the win. Especially if we could have stopped the punt return.
techtom4 - September 19, 2009
By your D...
… you must mean “Colt’s perception of the height of players not named Shipley” and by great you mean “just awful”, right?
Horn Brain - September 20, 2009
No, actually
I don’t mean either one of those. Potts had several missed passes, too. Those things happen. I’m pretty sure something caused him to throw high… maybe the pressure he was under? Or did he just feel like being inaccurate last night? If you truly believe Tech’s defensive performance last night was “just awful” than the game of college football must be nothing more than a confusing, disorganized, rambled mess of movement whenever you watch it.
techtom4 - September 20, 2009
I think...
that in this particular sentence, “just awful” is used to qualify “Colt’s perception…” and not Tech’s defense.
BrooklynHorn - September 20, 2009
Either way
that statement is ludicrous. Again, Potts was inaccurate at times too. McCoy was pressured regularly. Not as often as Potts was, but still a good amount. Until about the middle of the 4th, UT couldn’t run the ball either. I can claim that the reason Potts was pressured so much was because the Tech O-line’s “perception of where UT’s blitzing defenders were coming from” was “off” or “just awful” all I want to, or I can just give them credit for playing well and not whine.
techtom4 - September 20, 2009
sorry Tech only wins every 7 yrs or so...

Is there such thing as a moral defeat?
How many times do we have to play poorly before people admit that we don’t have a very good team this year? If this is how we come out and play for big games, OU’s defense is going to have a great time with odd-yeared Colt.

I dont buy it. Its like when McNabb had flu when Eagles lost
hookemkp - September 20, 2009
I buy it.
Reason being, during the game, his skin-tone looked odd to me… flushed a bit… almost sickly. I kept wondering what that was about. The flu makes sense now that it’s been said.
Beleafit - September 20, 2009
If it is true than yeah I buy. The flu can make you weak.
Also I think I said he looked sick as well.
girlslikefootball2 - September 20, 2009
Colt looked physically bad in the first half...sallow, pale skin, weepy eyes
(and not from the INTs), no smiles or really any expression at all early, which was odd.
The good thing is that he won’t have the flu the rest of the season. Considering the situation nationwide, that is a damn good thing.
whills - September 20, 2009
are you doing a freaking physical examination through TV??
all those could have been caused by anxiety, stress and overwhelming sense of responsibility. He didn’t seem that ill-appearing to me
hookemkp - September 20, 2009
Yet, none of the markers indicating that that was the issue were present during the game like they were in the previous two. Whills is right. His face was instead eerily expressionless. I picked up on that too.You didn’t? They were entirely different from the ones resulting from the “anxiety, stress and overwhelming sense of responsibility” that he displayed in the last two games. And his skin was so not right that I literally went, “ew” during the after-game on-field interview. I’m glad that it turned out that he actually was sick so it could be explained cause I really did start feeling sorry for the guy there :p!!
Yes, we can see things on our television sets. Yes, even those things that are visible markers of the flu. Yes, we can also read people’s facial expressions through the tv (obviously some people are better at this than others). Yes, what we notice lined up 100% with Colt’s claim. No, that’s not called coincidence, it’s called validation. Yes your perception (or non-perception) of it could be totally wrong. No it doesn’t make us crazy people doing physicals through our tv-sets or Colt a liar. Both of those are huge leaps trying to bypass the evidences that you are wrong (one because it’s exaggerating a perfectly believable notion into an unbelievable one, and the other because it goes against everything we know about Colt’s great character) . Just accept it gracefully and move on.
Beleafit - September 20, 2009
I must not have your HD tv set..sorry
I didnt call anyone a liar or crazy. I think it is a bit absurd to blindly believe that he has flu based on what he presented as “physical appearance” and what UT’s media guy casually said after the game. But, if that makes you go to sleep better at night, then no argument there.
1st game was the 1st game of the season, last wk was high altitude, this wk is flu, whats next? I must have not noticed his facial expression bc he did not perform well and was thinking way too much.
I thought I would give my 2 cent on this issue of physical examination/visual cues through TV bc I actually study medicine and it is very unlikely that one can differentiate flu-like symptoms from anxiety/stress related symptoms. I mean its absurd, but not crazy, I guess
hookemkp - September 20, 2009
I dont think anyone is diagnosing through the TV
But even my wife commented on how Colt’s color looked off. Add in the coaches saying that he was indeed sick, and it makes sense.
BoddickerIsClutch - September 21, 2009
Not trying to be a doctor
but I do make comparison to what I consider “normal.” I didn’t know Colt had been sick when I first saw this…I just saw what I said I saw and you’re right, I could have been completely wrong. But I wasn’t. Colt is an expressive person, both when things are good and bad, and when he went flat, there must be something else at work. Is isn’t about medicine, its about acute perception and reading people, and in may case, involves decades of experience.
Having had kids and actually working with women a great deal (my board of directors has been all women several times), I have found it necessary to pick up on nuance and the “little” things. People get quiet when things are “not right.” If you’re in the leadership or responsible role, you need to find t hose things out immediately. Plus, on the journalistic side, dealing with coaches and knowing they don’t reveal many things, their expressions and eyes tell me when something is there and that helps in deciphering the sphinx. In most cases there is a limited number of things which could be hidden or unsaid, so you can sometimes flush that out enough to get in the ball park.
whills - September 22, 2009
34-24 much better than 33-39
Guys, keep it in perspective – was it a blowout, was it dominant, – no, BUT, the alternative is much worse. We are not going to fire on all cylinders every game – but we found what we needed to do to WIN. The fans are putting too much pressure and have unrealistic expectations for each game. There is no team that is dominant every week. We just need to keep winning our next game and things will take care of themselves.

I would like to see the overall stats on attempts and completions for Potts vs Harrell from last year. As much as I loved the hit from Sergio, Potts got some respect after that game. I think he had an overall greater impact individually than Harrell did last year. Harrell had a star studded support cast in O-line and Receiving corp and had more time to throw. Potts got hammered or hurried several times.

YES!!!
I for one was deathly afraid that Tech was going to win this game. I don’t care if they’re ranked or not. They always play us tough. And we had a decisive victory. Screw style points, I am a happy man! Defense looks pretty good!! Better than previous years!
longhorn_dan - September 19, 2009
Like I said on the game thread . . .
I’ll take it. But there are some real concerns:
Offensive line. I don’t think this can be fixed.
Pass defense. Yeah, it’s Tech. But that’s a zillion yards and way too many uncontested passes. The pass rush was decisive; it was also inconsistent.
Running game. Sorry; I love what Tre Newton has done, but if the coaches felt he was the answer, we wouldn’t have heard Vondrell and Fozzy and Cody all spring and summer. It’s not like Newton just showed up on Aug. 10.
OU (which still sucks, by the way). They’re better than Tech. And we don’t play them at DKR-Memorial.
Bad starts. This is not new. Like the O-line, I’m not sure it can be fixed.
edsp - September 19, 2009
I respectfully disagree on the running game
Newton IS the answer.
austinite - September 19, 2009
What makes you say that?
Other than the big TD he broke, he had a very mediocre night. No running back can be the answer because our O-Line isn’t creating running lanes.
circa1015 - September 19, 2009
well, that's the OL problem
not RB problem. Newton is clearly the choice out of all RBs that we have this year.
Just because OL can’t create running lane should not penalize Newton for the performance tonight. In fact, OL problem makes Newton’s performance even better than perceived.
austinite - September 19, 2009
come on...
last year up until the OU game, nobody (including myself) thought Texas would be a national title contender. Each game is different. OU can’t do the same things on offense that Tech does, and vice versa. We can adjust our gameplan each week to defeat the opponnent du jour. Watch what happens.
longhorn_dan - September 19, 2009
O-line improved drastically in the 2nd half
but yeah….a big concern
zamm - September 19, 2009
I think TT dline just got tired....They had no depth whatsoever..
cj43 - September 19, 2009
You nailed this.
Same thing happened last week. Fair to good defensive lines kick our best O-line . . . when our size (and maybe our coaching adjustments) take effect, we look better. I’m guessing OU (sucks) will have more depth and be less susceptible to adjustments. Just guessing, mind you.
edsp - September 19, 2009
OU's defense is scary
two consecutive shutouts. Shutting out Tulsa is pretty damn impressive. But with that said, we have enough weapons to win the game as long as we don’t turn it over. Our defense ain’t too shabby either.
goingforthecorner - September 19, 2009
What concerns me is that the offense is starting to look during Chris Simms Era
Start uber slow and pick it back up in second half…lets hope for a complete game against our next opponent

McCoy's statline is deceptive.
It should read: 2 TDs, 1 INT. His toss to Dan Bucker was almost a TD if Mr. Bucker stretches for the endzone, and his INT was a ball that hit a WR in the hands.
Also note that Tebow threw zero TDs today and 1 INT, and one fumble lost in the red zone. Good work.

3. The national scenarios of going undefeated and left out have virtually been destroyed
Still will be difficult to win out – but should be no royal screwing by the BCS this year.
realmccoy - September 20, 2009
If we lose to OSU we could get left out.
girlslikefootball2 - September 20, 2009
Even the dirt burglars could screwed us if we lose to them.
In a 3 way (we are talking getting screwed), if you have to lose, 10/17 is better than 10/31. Problem is if we lose the RRS, I doubt the dirt burglars lose to Okie light in Norman and we are hosed. Remember this can happen even if OU loses to Miami. It would be a major screwing for them to have a worse record than us and win the BigXII.
Conclusion…Just win.
Bevoboy94 - September 20, 2009
I am confused
Is it getting screwed for a team that wins more games in the conference to win the conference?
Wells - September 20, 2009
You are right? If the horns are prepared for any game it is the RRS.
OSU freaks me out. Our one road game didn’t go that well. I still remember 2007 when Jamal saved us. I just hope we got out and give a dominant performance in both games.
girlslikefootball2 - September 20, 2009
What we learned from the Tech Torture Fest...
Wel…at least we aren’t USC…losing to a team that went 0-13 last year.
Yes, the C-Brown twins still suck on the corners and can’t cover themselves. Yes, Colt is struggling and does not look comfortable on the field in the first half. Yes, Sergio still knows how to sack. Yes, we know how to strip the ball from runners. Yes, Jordan Shipley has stepped up to lead this team. Yes, Chiles moving to wide receiver was a great move. Yes, we won…and Yes, we are still undefeated….and Yes, we still have a chance to win the National Championship.
Miami is going to whip OU!!!!! Not good for us, but damn will it be fun to watch!

Thoughts
1) It would appear that Texas Tech has reached a sustainable level of quality football. The 2009 team looks exactly like the 2008 team, which, undoubtably, resembles the 2010 and 2011 teams. Leach has fine-tuned his system to the point that he hardly depends on personnel, that is, he obviously needs talented players, but the particularities of those players, such as personality, attitude, experience, or leadership ability, seem not to matter as much to Tech as they do to other teams. One wonders if, under such a system, Tech will ever endure a “rebuilding year.” It used to be that occasionally we’d go up to Lubbock and lose a heartbreaker, but the following season, in Austin, we’d exact revenge to the tune of a 40-point massacre. Those days are over. Expect Tech to play us tough every year. And while I won’t say that yesterday’s win was unsatisfying, it was certainly as unsatisfying as a revenge win over a conference rival can be.
2) Put me in the camp that thinks McCoy has returned to 2007 form. That’s not to say I’m at all giving up on Colt, just that I don’t expect his struggles to end any time soon. With Colt, it doesn’t seem to be a game-to-game mindset, as much as a seasonal disposition. He never really got on track in 2007, just as he never really got off the tracks in 2008. I’ll be shocked if he snaps out of this by next week. Oddly, there was a point in the 4th quarter, on our final meaningful possession (which ended with a field goal) that the coaches seemed to be treating Colt in much the same manner that Lane Kiffin treats Jonathan Crompton, that is to say that they were mostly running the ball and calling short “confidence building” passes, which is low mark for a returning Heisman front-runner.
3) Oklahoma scares the hell out of me. Since their slip-up against BYU, they’ve been the only demonstrably dominant superpower in college football. As the rest of the top-10 has struggled, and as everyone writes them off, very quietly Landry Jones is developing into their next Heisman-contending QB, and the team seems to be growing cohesive.
BrooklynHorn - September 20, 2009
Landry Jones
I remember seeing a High School game on TV that he was in, and the announcers said that he was committed to OU… I was thinking, “Oh Crap.” He sure looked like the real deal back then.

WOW
finally a UT who sees things for what they are! I never thought I would see the day.
techtom4 - September 20, 2009
meant to say
“UT fan” who sees…..
techtom4 - September 20, 2009
Nice win, Horns. Ugly first half, but good teams overcome their mistakes and y’all did. McCoy, while a great QB, doesn’t look like “the man” this season. That’s okay. You have a new hoss in Newton to help shoulder the load.
Kindle…good lord. I think if it was anyone besides Potts taking that hit, we’d be reading about a death on the field. What a hit.
Good luck the rest of the way.
Tech92 - September 20, 2009
Tech is really good
They had some penalties that cost them, but drove the ball really well. It’s amazing how their receivers catch everything… and they spread it around:
RECEIVING
REC YDS TD LG
Britton 8 69 0 24
Torres 7 59 0 16
Leong 6 80 2 18
Zouzalik 5 73 0 33
Swindall 5 67 1 22
Franks 4 35 0 11
Lewis 4 22 0 11
Batch 3 1 0 9
James 2 15 0 10
Stephens 2 -1 0 0
Crazy.
SelimSivad - September 20, 2009
Good game.
You guys played tough. Certainly one of the better road performances that Leach has had in a big game.
TheElusiveShadow - September 20, 2009
Colt...
I think Colt will bounce back. The 2007 slump was all based on experience. He’s been the starter for a long time…he knows what to do. The pressure, media and fans have built up a level of unattainable ability. No way he will ever play like he did in 2008. New team, new year, no Quan Cosby to play toss with. He needs to have a beer(s) for the first time in his life…sit back and enjoy being a senior with a chance to win it all.

Colt's Condition
Just FYI, ESPN is reporting that Colt was suffering from flu-like symptoms all week and missed Tuesday’s practice.
So for his subpar performance, I think it’s probably more him not feeling healthy than anything else.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=292620251
Let’s see how they bounce back. I think it’s a good win. They can’t all be blowouts and TT is not a bad team.
zboy101 - September 20, 2009
This game kind of embodied everything I feared about last year
What was our answer last year if Colt had a bad game? And by bad, I mean sub Robo Colt performance.
I think we saw that last night, and it speaks well for our team that a lot of people stepped up to the plate. The special teams, defense, and running game were all real players in last night’s game. I’m not sure we would have won that game in 2008.
Key Stats:
Tre Newton came out and averaged 4.4 yds per carry. That’s enough to get the job done and take a little pressure off the passing game. Especially important in closing out a team in the fourth quarter.
Hunter Lawrence was 2 for 2. Credit where credit is due, our kicker is good and puts points on the board. Shipley runs back a TD from a TT punt out of the endzone.
Tech was 3 of 13 on 3rd down according to espn. That’s 23%. Combined with 3 forced turnovers and holding Tech to 23, our D put our team in a position to win.
Colt was 70% on his passes, but 1 TD and 2 INTs. We probably could spot him another TD for Buckner’s catch that took him to the 1 yd line. If Colt has a better game and goes for 3 TDs and 1 INT ( like Potts did ), that game isn’t really that close and we win by two or more TD’s.
If we keep playing like this, we’re going to drop a game somewhere along the line. However, if Colt finds his spirit animal and starts making a case for the Heisman, we’re going to start looking dominant against good or even great teams. Tech caught our offense stalling, and we still came out with the ‘W’. That didn’t happen last year.
Hook ’em
notsofst - September 20, 2009
anyone notice how badass our field position was every drive? our return team did get pinned back deep all that often. i saw one shipley fair catch on like the 20, and one punt that should have been down at the 1 yd line but was muffed into the endzone by TTech. our actual returns from williams, monroe, shipley were all excellent.
Displaced Longhorn - September 20, 2009
Cody Johnson?
On two key 4th down possessions in the Red Zone I would have expected to see him.
1st and Goal at TTU 4 Tre’ Newton rush for no gain to the TexTc 4.
2nd and Goal at TTU 4 Tre’ Newton rush for 1 yard to the TexTc 3.
3rd and Goal at TTU 3 Timeout TEXAS, clock 09:16.
3rd and Goal at TTU 3 Colt McCoy pass complete to Dan Buckner for 3 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.
1st and 10 at TTU 24 Tre’ Newton rush for 9 yards to the TexTc 15.
2nd and 1 at TTU 15 Tre’ Newton rush for a loss of 1 yard to the TexTc 16.
3rd and 2 at TTU 16 Tre’ Newton rush for no gain to the TexTc 16.
4th and 2 at TTU 16 Hunter Lawrence 33 yard field goal GOOD.
Was Mack just checking to see how Tre’ worked out as the every-down back?
patienthornsfan - September 20, 2009
Wake up Greg!
Still is not giving Tre the credit her deserves…Davis didn’t even know he carried the ball 20 times. Who the hell did he think he had playing running back all game? Wake up Davis!
Dawnpatrol - September 20, 2009
agreed...
GD also needs to get Colt used to throwing against a loose cover 2 in practice… That is what we will se the restt of the year. deep safeties and loose underneath to keep all receivers in front. Make Colt have to beat you underneath and make Texas Run… Will GD let Tre’ loose or just rely on Colt and Jordan on 3 yard pass plays…
longhorn35 - September 20, 2009
All right, let's calm down.
When the offensive coaches get comfortable with certain players as capable of doing various things, then the play-caller is not notified when those players are inserted into the game in replacement of other players. The play-caller rarely has any say as to which personnel is on the field in a given play because he’s up in the booth, you know, calling the plays. That decision is often made on the field (i.e. by Mack or Major or someone like that).
Save the vitriol for something/someone who actually deserves it.
billyzane - September 20, 2009
If true...
that seems entirely problematic. Shouldn’t one’s playcalling depend a bit on what packages and personnel are on the field?
BrooklynHorn - September 20, 2009
Of Course.
The point was that with certain players, GD considers them interchangeable with other certain players for the purposes of play calling. In those cases, he doesn’t need to be bothered with the information that one receiver has been subbed out for another because he needs a breather, or whatever. This isn’t a universal thing where he has no idea who’s on the field at any given time. They obviously have packages and they decide personnel for those packages before the game. I’m talking about in terms of subbing in and out or going with the hot hand.
Now, I’m just basing this on something GD said like 4 years ago, and I don’t know if things have changed, or if this is actually the reason GD doesn’t know exactly how many carries Newton got. In fact, I have no idea that he didn’t know because I haven’t seen his quote to this effect. Dawnpatrol didn’t provide a link. It could be made up for all I know. He could have said, “He had 20 carries? I thought it was closer to 15. I guess I lost track.” It could be that benign a comment, reflective of nothing deeper than that. I have no idea.
billyzane - September 20, 2009
I had this same thought
Is it a bad idea even to break out the jumbo package on 2nd down and less than 4 to go? It seems like we only do it if we need 1 yard.
I think they were just giving Tre his chance to make it happen, since he’d been productive all game.
notsofst - September 20, 2009
Surprised there isn't more talk about the Wild Horn formation
At least it sounds better than Q package… but, it had some success. I’m curious what they were going to do if Chiles didn’t bobble that one snap.
SelimSivad - September 20, 2009
Yeah, this probably deserves a fan post of its own
Here’s a link to the Wildcat formation, which recently has been employed by one “Ricky Williams” at the Miami Dolphins. Wonder if Greg talked to him in the off season.
I’ve also been wondering about our arsenal of trick plays with Chiles at reciever. It’s gotta set us up for some wild plays to have a former backup QB out wide on every play.
notsofst - September 20, 2009
Those Plays Appeared to be Filler..
I think this gives ablsolute validity, if needed, for Colts health condition at gametime. I think those plays were put in to give him a break of sorts and thank heaven ended up working.
