Bevo's Daily Roundup - UTEP Moratorium

Bdr_header_medium

Star-divide

Colt McCoy is back. The defense looks great. Hallelujah.

"That," McCoy said, "was a good day."

What else is there to say? Texas dismantles UTEP. This was the most lopsided score since the 70-3 drubbing of Colorado in the 2005 Big 12 championship game. (Box score)

Texas held UTEP (1-3) to seven first downs and 53 total yards.

The Horns were just making a statement.

But this was a landmark victory for the Longhorns and their most complete victory of the season.

After Colt McCoy's interception was returned 50 yard for a touchdown by Melvin Stephenson, the Longhorns blew the game open by scoring on six-straight possessions to turn it into a rout.

"You hate to beat somebody that bad ... but the game just kind of got out of hand,"
Texas coach Mack Brown said.

McCoy did not seem happy with receivers after several dropped passes, but overall he had a great day.

McCoy pumped his fist and yelled at receivers after a couple of dropped passes, then hooked up with Buckner again. This time, it was a nifty one-handed grab over two defenders a minute before halftime for Buckner's fourth touchdown of the season.

This was Colt McCoy's 21st straight game with a touchdown pass.

D.J. Monroe set a record.

The redshirt freshman just returned a UTEP kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. In the process, Monroe set a Texas season AND career record with his second kickoff return for a touchdown, in just his fourth game.

What UTEP said...

I think they're (Texas) better than Kansas. I think they're the best team in the country.

— Head coach Mike Price

They're ranked No. 2 for a reason. They have a really good defense, good up front and good coverage. I think a couple of the interceptions I had, I was trying to force it, trying to make a play, and I pretty much learned from that really quick. You can't force yourself to do too much.

— Trevor Vittatoe, quarterback

Who is McCoy's security blanket?

It has to be Dan Buckner. He had six catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Buckner is quickly becoming Mr. Touchdown. He already has four this season.

Jordan Shipley had another great game. He missed Bevo this week.

Jordan Shipley might have been better off facing Bevo than he was returning a punt in the first half.

Shipley, who did not call for a fair catch, was absolutely drilled by Melvin Stephenson right as he was catching the ball. But it was an obvious 15-yard penalty.

Shipley, as usual, got right back up.

The Horns get a report card.

Where did everyone go?

This may have been the third-largest crowd ever to watch a football game in the state, but by the third quarter, the announced crowd of 101,144 had considerably thinned. That'll happen with a 40-point blowout at halftime.

The Horns are having fun again.

Just dawned on me

We had more points than UTEP had yards. Ouch.

This was an awesome tune up game to take to the bye week. This is where the schedule now finally starts for the road to Pasadena
It may sound bad (especially as a fervent Texas fan)

but thank God so many people left that game at the half. Those of us working EMS were getting bombed in the first half. We had more calls in the first half alone (chalk one up for the Texas heat) than in the past two games combined. Students were dropping like flies because of the heat…so hooray for the halftime lead.

Too bad the stupid stadium

Sells bottled water for THREE DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS. Students aren’t going to buy that.

I've heard some choice words from students

and I think we’re going to try to petition the university to allow student discounts on water, provide bottles, or at least something. These 2:30 games pretty much kill the students, and us by proxy. $3.50 is ridiculous for water, and the line for the fountain stretched ridiculously far today during the game.

I agree the university should help fans fight off the heat

cooling zones under the bleachers would be nice, and I think for warm game days, fans should be allowed to bring outside water into the stadium.

that won't happen...

…you’ll get some fratty guy who fills up the water bottle w/ clear liquor and gets more drunk than he prob. already is, and causes a scene and yada yada yada…so yeah, not gonna happen.

Cost of doing business...

Students with sports package get free tickets… Drop one sixpack from list and 2 waters! 3.50 is not that much… Depends on if you want to survive a 2:30 ko or not…. Priorities

water

The sports package costs money so no the tickets are not free. And $3.50 for anyone is gouging. It has nothing to do with priorities.

it's all price gouging

Like I’d ever pay $5 for a hot dog anywhere, except a stadium/ ballpark.

You’re in a closed environment, just like you are in an airport or movie theater. If you expect reasonable prices you’re a moron.

And they had water stations throughout the stadium as well as the usual water fountains.

I've never seen..

…a longer line for the water fountain that gives out hot water. It was so bad that people (including me) had to go under for halftime and go to the bathroom to use the sink for its water.

How dare you criticize UT!
How did your by Tedford do this week?
English please.
Shout out

Thanks to the EMS guys who work the crowds. Thankless job but a critical one.

$3.50 is too much for water but the students seem to find money for beer/booze, I can see both sides of that one but think a student discount would be a good idea.

9 Different Rushers in this game, Record?
UTEP's Theme for this game: Lacrimosa

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swkT07TP-mo

You’ll probably recognize this masterpiece from a Nike commercial of a year or two back. This is properly the theme for any offense that has to face Texas. Can you imagine, the last minute of this while Sergio Kindle beheads quarterbacks in slow motion? Blake Gideon leaping picks? Kheeston Randall blowing up running plays?

Crazy eFFing week

Wow. The Horns finally covered the spread on the game that I picked against them (to cover, not to lose).

I went from 15 in PB’s pool to 52. After everything that happened the last few weeks, I’m just happy to 1) be undefeated and 2) have our Hiesman QB canidate healthy.

Running Back by Committee

Vondrell was the man, then DJ, then Tre’, then Vondrell again, and now a dose of nearly-healthy Fragile Fozzy lightning in a bottle. What’s the Major to do?

play Berryhill haha
most surprising stat I've read is Monroe's record

did Eric Metcalf only return punts for TDs?

I’m shocked texas has never had someone hit more than one return for the TD in their career, before yesterday.

Do you mean Texas?

Are you referring to the flagship institution of this great state? Texas is the university of the state located in the state capital not a specialty school located in a obscure, small town.

And no its not Texas Aggies no more than its Texas Red Raiders. You have a specialty designation. Live with it.

Season, Not Career
I think it was both, actually.

From like ’78 till ’00, we had no kickoff returns for touchdowns, which makes it pretty believable.

I believe the one that broke the streak was in the Holiday bowl against Oregon. Victor Ike of all people. I remember him being pretty slow but he had the entire field open to him. I also remember Mike Tirico going absolutely crazy on the play-by-play screaming how Texas hadn’t done this is 20 years…….I still can’t believe we lost that game.

BZ should recall.....

…. my calling for more playing time for D.J. Monroe.

We all recall your criticism of Kindle.

Call it a push.

Try again sport.

Reading comprehension still a problem for you, I see.

I didn’t criticize Kindle. I pointed out his lack of statistics and agreed with Kirk Bohls who nailed it. Sergio has played to the quality of our opponent, which always sucks at season’s start. If you recall, Bohls also pointed out that he fully expected Kindle’s production to pick up in the future. I agree.

And you should recall me saying that I didn't disagree with you.
I was smiling...

….BZ. Are you?

Something you will never hear from Bob Stoops.

From Mach Brown. "You hate to beat someone that badly because Mike Price is someone we respect,’’ he said.

Class.

Mack. I can’t spell today.

I respect Mike Price's willingness to fight for his right to party.
