Texas Destroys UTEP 64-7 -- Celebration Thread

That was what we needed. Colt was the guy we thought he'd be all year, freshman DJ Monroe became the first player in Texas history (!) to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a career, Vondrell McGee hit 100 yards on less than 10 carries, and we found out that Trevor Walker is the forth string QB. The Horns get a much needed week of rest before taking on Colorado. For now we can celebrate Colt's big day and the fact that the Horns remain undefeated while so many other top ten teams go down.

what a D we are developing.

Great game on ST also

Good point

53 yards on the box score

and we without kindle and williams for most of it.

I really can’t wait to see them dismantle the rest of the big 12.

MVP

Berryhill

For keeping the score below 70?

If so, it should be a co-mvp award with Fitzhenry causing a fumble on Hills to keep him from going into the endzone.

I was wondering who that was.

It would have been a good strip if he was on defense.

Our offense and special teams

Are costing or D shutouts. We would have shut out Wyoming and UTEP without mistakes from other units of the team.

That being said, nice win. You know our expectations are high when we thrash a team 65-7 and fans are talking about our mistakes and missed opportunities.

i watched the gamecast, can’t wait to download this one.

Best defensive performance I've seen from a Texas team.

Just unreal.

Once Colt got his daily pick out of the way, he played lights out.

We have a lot of young, fast, undersized guys. The Garrett Gilbert era is gonna be a blast.

Mythical Fozzy Creature indeed.

the thing i like the most about gilbert is his upside, all the while being as polished as he is.

to top it off, he has a college level training program to get him into the shape he will need to be to be the field general at Texas. even though he is playing in limited time, he is definitely about as accurate as Colt.

Nice. Earl gives profs to Blake for his 1st pick today during post game interview.
Great game, but ESPN are assholes

Just enjoying the highlights after the game and Kordell Stewart with dumb ass crew all have ’Bama ahead of Texas. Why no respect?

well...

first off – does it really matter?

secondly – TX is yet to play any team that is the calibar of a VT, and Bama has.

I honestly

on a neutral field would pick Texas Tech over VT. So in my eyes, Texas has played a team the “caliber” of Va Tech. Same Va Tech that needed a busted play to beat Nebraska in Blacksburgh.

would be nice to see

Tech beat Houston tonight. would strengthen our schedule

I agree

Would def help

I do agree however

it doesnt matter. Win and we’re in.

TT beating #17 Houston at half

VT is overrated as usual. Is VT good now that they beat an un-proven Miami team? Miami beat Florida State who sucked today and GT showed what they have to offer in last years bowl game.

ou will destroy Miami
Its because

they all were so high on Miami after last week and Va Tech handed it to them today. The same Va Tech that got beat by Bama, so Stewart and the rest of those i dots at the worldwide leader have to try and save face somehow.

“Oh well, Va Tech’s only loss is to Alabama so Alabama must be EXTREMELY good if Va Tech beat Miami, a team that is top 10 because it beat Florida State and Georgia Tech.”

Seriously

Kirk. This is CFB and your sarcastic layout of analyst logic is ironically accurate. I can say without cheek that I’m fine with the scenario you layot above. We’ve looked incredibly weak in many areas against much weaker teams than VA Tech and even Miami have played. So in my view those teams deserve their current rankings. In time, however, I believe things will work out for the serving team(s); the Horns will prevail.

Big picture. Think big picture.

Either Bama or Florida will lose, in December if not before. One, I predict, WILL lose before the SEC title game.

Hard to say how impressive Longhorns were today — UTEP was utterly outclassed in both lines. Even the worst Big 12 team is far superior up front to what this team was. All those easy points won’t come so easy in the Big 12. But you gotta love the speed UT can trot out there; very different from last season.

Texas did what they needed to do

Texas didn’t against TT or Wyoming so its a good relief!

Jesus is knocked out and down for the count.
They went to commercial before he rose from the dead
Sergio hit was 10 times harder than that one.
similar hit to potts, only with a knee to the back of his head on the way down for good measure

If that hit put JC down for that long I guess Potts must have Wolverine healing powers

Not cool.

He got blind-sided (nothing wrong with that) and his head got nasty whiplash on his O-Lineman’s knee. That’s at least a bad concussion and maybe some neck damage. It didn’t look good.

Anyone notice on the Monroe kick return

when DJ hits the hole, MG is basically standing still when DJ runs past him, but MG is fast enough that they’re both the first ones in the endzone. I love our team speed this year.

Agreed.

I can’t remember a faster Mack Brown team than this.

2005

Monroe and Goodwin don’t start. In a year or two it will be the fastest team!

You realize they don't start on this team either
Apparantly MG could have won the Big 12 high jump with his jumps in high school.

Looks like Gilbert and Goodwin are developing some chemistry too. Roomates?

it was the long jump, or triple jump, but pretty sure it was long jump.

Long jump for sure, sorry.
Goodwin impresses

Seems like he is GG’s go to guy. Even given the opponent i was impressed with Goodwin’s hard running, and power through tackles for his size. He’s not just a guy who runs fast.

John Brantley in for Florida
looks like he will be successor next year.

Tebow probably done for the night. Doesn’t look like he knows where he is

Yep. Those "tough" SEC defenses are the culprit.
What happened to Tebow?

Saw the above about the hit. Was it really that bad or is it just a precaution given the score?

hard hit and the back of his head hit a lineman's knee on the way down
My God.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news;_ylt=Aq7ulakvinH4YHtd4D0t7iQcvrYF?slug=txt25floridatebowinjur&prov=st&type=lgns

They wrote a story about this as the game was in progress?

That sounds like a bad hit though.

Would hate to see something bad happen. Laying motionless for several minutes? Ouch.

His arms went stiff after the hit.

Definite concussion to some degree.

Was he moving after the hit?
No. A good minute or two laying motionless with trainers over him.
Tebow carted off the field while vomitting
Really?
yeah, said he had the flu before the game anyway. concussion on top of that. tough day
No joke: If you search "respiratory illness" in Google, 3 of the first 4 articles are about Tebow.

The other is a definition.

No, the first three are definitions too.

one is a news result, 2 are about tebow (not including the tebow news result), and 1 is a definition.

Was a joke. Clearly not funny, sorry.
I saw what you did

Well done sir

i debated if you were making a joke, didn’t think it was funny enough to take it as one, and figured you were just using like google safe search or something for different results :-P

google safe search?

I take that as an affront to my manhood :)

espn front page, "How bad is tebow's injury?"

sportscenter from tebow’s bedside along with helicopter footage above the florida campus all week.

To be fair

He is the most important player on the #1 overall team, and he just got hammered. They’d do this for Colt too. Not saying that its a good thing that they do it at all, just that they would do it for everyone.

vicious hit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFN90gkKHu4

yikes

absolutely brutal. And btw, just about as helmet-to-helmet as Kindle vs. Potts 2009.

wow

That’s really tough. Clean tackle with just about the worst fall that you could get.

Speaking of big hits

Go Tech? As much as i like UH, Tech won alot of respect form me last week, and I feel obligated to root for em tonite. Sadly I have to study, so no drinkin.

Definitely a tech fan tonight.

Our defeated opponents are our strength of schedule now.

Texas Tech vs Houston game temporarily on ESPN Classic

Until Florida game is over.

If it is "literally" the toughest ticket in town

As the commentator just suggested, what exactly does that mean?

It can take a punch?

Oh my. They are letting Craig James call this game?

Is there anyone with a more Texas Tech bias? Come on ESPN.

Astros weren't sold out?
cool thanks!

Raiders won the toss, even though Akeem flipped the coin.

Over or under on Potts throwning 70 passes?
I'll take the over

with both sides playing air raid, it’s a long game

first half, you mean?
Funny. No, I meant for the game.
Coogs score first

Leach challenged it. Looks like he fumbled it into the end zone. Refs didn’t agree. 7-0 UH.

We'll never hear the end of the it if the Cougars beat Tech by a larger margin.
Arizona State/Georgia good game

tied 4th quarter. 17-17

PAC 10 has been beating up the SEC...
Let's see if Leach's Tech can beat a ranked team on the road...

They haven’t been very good at that during his tenure.

Houston is like Tech-Lite

I’ve gotta believe they pull this one out

All they need is some lucky bounces

Not to take away from their win against Oklahoma State, but without that incredibly lucky bounce on their go-ahead TD, they lose that game. A good bounce this game, especially at home, and they can take down Tech too.

I want to bring up the field goal with 2 seconds left at the end of the half against UTEP

We intercepted the ball with 17 seconds left on the clock, up 47-7….

Am I the only person who thought we should have taken a knee? Style points, Mack?

I thought the decision to throw two quick passes and go for the kick was really strange.

  1. I’m of the belief that you can never ever ever run up the score in the first half. There’s no such thing. If your team can’t make it through 30 minutes of football you shouldn’t be on the field.
  1. I liked it, find out the range of your kicker, might pay off dividends later in the year
Don't know why it noted both as 1.
they are equally important

Co #1’s

I don't

I think we’re entitled to play at least a full half of football, unless we’re up by 100 or something.

I actually liked the aggressiveness. You really can’t say we were going for style points when we had guys in at the end of the game whom even the most hardcore fans have never heard of.

I thought Mack would order a knee . . .

but with an open date and the way the early games have gone, I think he figured it was a good time to run some time-pressured plays. And to give No. 15 a shot at a long FG, if it came to that.

May also have sent a message to the players; that more than anything else — I’m going all in, I expect you to.

Statesman post

about an hour ago listed UT injuries — five or six, said none were considered serious. Hall hurt shoulder and knee. Sergio seemed to be fine. I worry about Aaron Williams (shoulder).

Houston missed a field goal after a huge penalty

That kind of offsets the early Tech fumble.

Arizona State stops Georgia on a 4th and 1 on the ASU 30.

Great stop.

Potts off tonight.

Almost picked off twice, intentional grounding, lost fumble.

Iam sure he's still seeing Sergio when he drops back.
Houston is jittery

Huge dropped pick and then dropped balls by their receivers on the next drive.

And right when I say that

Tech does the same thing.

Coog D is stepping it up.

Everybody’s hyped.

4th and 4.

QB sneak?

Doubt that..
It was a reference to Tech running a QB sneak on 4th and 4 against Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl.

Stupidest play idea ever.

That's Leach for you. Trys to do what no coach in their right mind would.
Did they just say that Leach refused to let his team use the cooling fans?

The guy can be a jerk to his players.

And refused to let them sit (though, that's not a hazard to health)
ASU starting a drive in Georgia territory...tied with 6 minutes left.
they'll self destruct
They just a need a field goal...

Then again they haven’t been able to move or catch the ball all game.

horndudette (a coog alum) says

“there will be a major fight break out before this is over”.

Really?

It’s looked pretty tame thus far.

Interception ASU

Ball on Georgia 20 yard line. 5 minutes left. Another SEC team goes down?

time out?
ASU field goal attempt for the lead blocked.
lol FG blocked
ASU offense is looking pitifull.
Tech's O-line got called for holding?

Wait, that’s possible?

Write it down for posterity.

Holding on TTU

Tackling the DE is a penalty now?

Georgia in FG range
Arizona State's QB

Is 10-33. My goodness. And we thought it was fun to make fun of Rudy.

It painful to watch someone go 10-33..

In defense, he did have a good amount of drops by the receivers.

lol yeah just noticed that
Hold the press. USC is up 6-0 over Washington State.
Missed PAT

who the hell does that? oh wait.

Are the University of Houston players wearing chinstraps, or what?

What’s the over/under on how many more times a UH player loses a helmet tonight?

Georgia wins on last second FG
Fuuny

showing Astrodome and Reliant, while playing this in Robertson HS Stadium miles away.

Coogs up 10-7.

For those of you wondering....

Hall of Famer Matt Barkley was able to make the start for USC.

Thank God

ESPN might have been forced to talk about someone else tonight. The horror. The horror.

Blocked Punt

Returned for TD. Iowa up 11-10. extra point pending.

Nice. Don't want Penn State to have a chance to go undefeated...
Sweet.

The sooner Penn State and Ohio State lose the sooner we can stop talking about the Big Ten.

Ohio State already lost to USC

Michigan is undefeated, although they almost lost to Indiana so not much threat there

INTERCEPTION

Iowa returns it to PSU 20!

Iowa Interception. Returned to Penn State 20
Big Ten overrated as usual
Touchdown Iowa!
They have PSU's number

won 7 of last 9?

7 of last 8, so even better.
7 of last 8 if they win this one I should say...
Yeah, the announcers want to rank Iowa #4 now after this win..

Iowa should of lost to Northern Iowa if they could of made 1 of 2 field goal attempts.

U of H has no idea how to stop the run

All Tech has to do to win is run the ball up the middle over and over.

Wow are we looking at 4 top 10 team losses?
very possible

now that PSU fumbled

wow another PSU turnover
Wow Iowa recovers another fumble!
PSU fumbles

This is hilarious.

haha

Heather: “Coach Leach, what did you do to ignite the running game?”
Pirate: “uh, we ran it.”

Fab

Sounds like something a pirate lawyer would say.

PSU intercepted again!!
Iowa INT

to secure the win.

another turnover for PSU
If Iowa loses this...

would anyone be suprised?

turnover should be game

LSU barely one> UT is looking better and better. Land thieve will be back in the top 10.

And the top 5 soon enough.
If they beat the U

Who looked surprisingly bad today.

It will be cool to have both teams ranked high going into the RRR.

It will make it game of the year again.

I take it back. I always am happier when there ranked low.
Houston

hanging in there!!! Come on Cougars

All 3 turnovers coming in the 4th quarter.

Wow.

four in this half.
Ahh, my gametracker hadn't updated it to 4 after that interception
Worst. Stat Line. Ever.

Daryl Clark started 5/5. Since then he goes 6/26, 87 yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs

should have never crossed the state line

Youngstown boys are jinxed when they go to Happy Valley.

Brent and Kirk Sucking Off Ferentz

Guy is one of the biggest disappointments over the last few years, they needed a historic finish to their opener to avoid losing to Northern Iowa for pete’s sake. Lets all just take a breather gents.

They should of lost against Northern Iowa

Did they not look at the previous games Iowa played this season? Come on guys. Your better than that.

Michigan @ Iowa in 2 weeks

both could be 5-0 going into the game

If Blue can get past Sparty?
Sparty's lost 3 in a row

all were close games though

Stanford is beating Washington 27-14

Just goes to show that USC likes losing to teams significantly less talented than them.

Who didn’t see Washington losing this week though?

“Washington is a classic team that plays up or down to their opponents level, mad respect for Locker” -USC

I wonder if GG could have led us past Washington last week....
Trojan?

At least you finally admitted you’re not a Longhorn fan.

You show your ignorance...

….at a more rapid pace each and every day.

Actually

It was more of a crack on the ambiguity of your statement. But hey, I’m loving the personal attacks. I hope it keeps working out for you.

Apply the "SEC Principle"

Stanford beating Washington just goes to show the depth and quality of the PAC-10.

Sorry, Kirk and Brent...

…but my thoughts and prayers are not with Tim Tebow. Apparently he can resurrect himself, thank you very much.

TD Notred Dame with 24 seconds left
Good throw by Clausen

Gotta give him credit. That’s a pressure packed throw.

yes, but two dreadful decisions by Purdue

1. Taking a timeout
2. No hint of a blitz the whole four-down series. Against a QB who’s not 100 percent. Terrible decision. But No. 1 was even worse.

I agree about the timeout

I want to hear the coach’s explanation for that. That’s just brainless.

I wonder if one of the kids panicked and called it -- nt
Why is the safety playing 5+ yards off when the end zone is 2 yards away

Terrible choice or terrible coaching. Made it an easy read.

I wonder how much the Pokes will jump up?
Adios, Penn State

Maybe next year.

Boilermaker ball on the 20

with :20 to go. Down by 3.

However

I could not believe Purdue called a timeout after Notre Dame ran the ball. So stupid. Cost them the game.

omg completely agree

they deserve to lose with dumb coaching like that

Great quote, Ferentz!

Sideline bimbo: “What were you thinking when that happened?”
Ferentz: “Crap, quite frankly. Crap.”

Awesome.

Holy Shit

these coogs can catch the damn ball. Even with PI.

Tech can get in the Top 25 with this win...
Houston having trouble tackling
Polls tomorrow

LSU #4? How many Big XII teams would bitch slap LSU?

And I guess ou is #6?

where's Boise gonna be?
they gotta be #5 , right?
I guess they are 5

But it gives me the willies. They’re too gimmicky. Leachy. Stoopsy. Ick.

I think Va.Tech is gonna jump OU
I'd be okay with that

Better wins than anything ou has, and their loss doesn’t look so bad now.

Nice Thumping of the U.

It’s a shame the Hurricanes could’nt handle a little RAIN.

Where do you rank....

….. Oregon?

Defeated #18 Utah
Defeated #6 Cal
Defeated Purdue

Lost to #14 Boise State (soon to be #5) in a season opener

Personally, I see their loss being better than any single loss team, except VaTech. I’ll take them all the way to #7. I fully expect the pollsters to mostly overlook their on-the-field success.

These announcers have never seen TT

Leach calls a timeout whenever the opposing team is getting into a rhythm. Has nothing to do with his defense being tired.

Yeah,

I doubt Craig James has seen much Red Raider football.

Didn't realize that's who was calling the game

“I’m Craig James, bitch!”

not trying to be a jerk, really.

welcome aboard.

Leach will go for it here on 4th..
Man. What a stop on 4th there..
great stop...but should have kicked the FG. would have been up by 8

leach is a moron

No kidding

Gotta kick that.

He doesn't think his defense can stop them..
Well, he got lucky

Keenum had somebody else open and threw that one. Big mistake.

I have no problem with him going for it...

…but jeez what a terrible play call. His running backs have been running wild all night. Why not use them?

Wasington State quarterback

have a total of 3 completions tonight. been sacked 8 times

"Erxleben on the kick"

de ja vu all over again…

Tech is in deep trouble...
Man.Houston might pull this out...

Leach kicking himself for not taking the field goal…

was bout to say the same thing
And burning all his timeouts
Muffin's boys are toasted

and an 8 point lead would be nice. Of course it will all be about Potts’ TD that wasn’t.

Even Tech fans at Double T Nation know that wasnt a score

He should have kicked it.

yep, I've been lurking over there too.
Did they leave Tech too much time left though?

They might be able to get in field goal range still.

an extra 5 seconds came off the clock... nice home town time keeper

Charging the field after beating an unranked team? Really?

That's how they roll in Houston!
I loved it!

although you can argue tech upsetting #1 texas deserved the fans storming the field, it was nice to see tech get a taste of what that feels like.

Shocker Nation takes it.

Doesn’t help us much. Won’t matter if we win ’em all.

Leach blew it, can’t wait to see how many apologists he still has.

Leach absolutely blew it

Poor clock management, poor decisions, poor play calling. He got away from the run in the second half too. Another choke job by Mike Leach on the road.

On the bright side it takes care of a potential tie-breaker in the South
So much for that Tech blowout
That is Leach's fault

Horrible coaching.
But bloody hell. Great game and awesome win for Houston.

Houston Community College

is acting like they beat Florida, instead of an unranked team which now has, what, two wins in its last six tries?

Really?

A mid-major team that’s ranked for the first time in nearly twenty years has its second win over a BCS conference team this season and they shouldn’t be excited?

Not sure why it bothers you so much. They earned it.

I agree

Kudos for Houston.
I think that was a great fought game. If I had been a student there, I would have ran on the field too.

Let 'em celebrate

I pulled my car in the garage and brought the couches in from the front yard.

Eat ’em up, coogs!

I think the fact that you have couches in your front yard speaks more about you than the need to bring them in does for the UH hans ;P

Trevor Walker

is a Civil Engineering student with me, and I’ve had a few classes with him the last couple of years. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met, and it was great to see him get in there as a Senior. What a cool feeling that must have been!

I had him..

…for ME210 a couple years back. Seems like a nice kid. Also, I had classes w/ Clark Ford when he was a EE student. Cool guy who just got a scholarship (two tackles today on kick-off coverage). I love when these guys get PT.
