….OU or VaTech are out of the NC picture? Losing to a ranked opponent, in the first game of the season, doesn’t keep a team out of the BCS Championship game. Though I have to admit Bradford’s injury could change that for OU.
The Buckeyes barely hung on to beat Navy, and USC’s running game was impressive. Barkley’s not playing like a freshman. Expect a romp in Columbus, and increasing pressure in the media for a “dream matchup” of Florida vs. USC in the Rose Bowl.
Cal looked very good today, so there’s still hope USC stumbles in Pac 10 play, but as you say we have to take care of our own business and not worry about what’s happening around the country. I’m looking forward to seeing how much the guys improve between now and Wyoming.
Gilbert look pretty awesome to me. I’m exited. De ja vu anyone. Texas blows out 1st game and ou loses. I don’t wish harn on any player but it does not look like a sprain to me.
instead of getting to watch it so it is a little more difficult for me really give any analysis. There were definitely mistakes, but overall a good game. The thing that bothers me most was all the chances the Texas D kept giving with the penalties. ULM got more yards and points than they should have due to pass interfence and roughing the passer calls.
Not sure if Muschamp really did not want to pin his ears back and go after the QB tonight, I also think this ULM is a lot better than we gave them credit for, they did return 18 starters. It was a win and if you are going to make the mistakes, you might as well have them in the first game of the year in blowout win.
I remember last years season opener against FAU was full of a lot of the same mistakes, it definitely could be a whole lot worse. I am definitely glad to be a Longhorn’s fan and not a Sooner’s fan.
you don’t want to peak at the opener. give the scheme more time to sink in, get some more reps, and learn from the mistakes. there were a lot of wheels-off broken plays that went for big yards. a little discipline gets rid of that.
I don’t think Muschamp had much of an incentive to show any of the elaborate blitzes. I’m sure he had them available, but it sounds like the scheme was pretty vanilla. I’m sure he’ll roll them out when it’s time.
Kindle benefited from the attention paid to Orakpo last season. I think Acho will experience a similar boost this season when teams try to neutralize Predator.
I'm just looking over the night's scores for the games that have wrapped up....
Besides games between two ranked teams and a few outlier squeakers, the point differentials in all the games are HUGE. Like, 30+ points. This is definitely the new norm in college football – if you’re ranked, schedule a creampuff opener to shake the rust off.
at some of the posts of CCMachine. No I did not troll, just wanted to see what they were saying. Definitely calling for Stoops head. I am starting to wonder if he is going to be on the hot seat if OU keeps this up. I guess those fans forgot what the 90’s were like. I know I sure as hell have not forgotten about how bad the 90’s were as a Longhorns fan.
Vondrell McGee really stunk up the place. Malcolm Williams didn’t show up. The defense was decent but nothing to write home about. We have room for improvement. Hopefully we’ll see the team play better against Wyoming.
that definitely applies tonight. we were good, not great. if we played a flawless game like we did against mizzou last year, the final score would’ve been absurd.
Three turnovers equates to a loss against a stronger opponent.
The running game struck me as inconsistent. Seemed like too many 0-2 yd runs. (yes, this is picky in light of the overall game stats). I’m thinking DJ, or another small, quick guy, fits the scheme better than VM.
Malcolm was absent.
Lack of pass rush (understanding that Muschamp kept it vanilla).
Kirkendoll, who needs to be an integral piece of the WR corps, had a couple shaky plays.
It’s awesome to be back. This team is built for success. I heard Bucker’s and Monroe’s names much more than I had anticipated. Colt was Colt, with a little hiccup here and there. Shipley picked up where he left off. The young guys got some good work in. 59 is awesome. Muschamp will address the 20. Hook ’em!
He probably had to swallow some pride as he made the move. Badass first game as a WR. I’m happy for that dude. Listening to his post-game interview right now.
I was surprised that we didnt' see M. Williams too...
until much later in the game, did Chiles/Buckner both beat him out or do you think Davis was treating this as a sort of pre-season situation since we are soooooo deep at WR?
I heard that they moved Shipley to the WR position that we all thought Malcolm was going to step in and play. The deep threat. I think they call it the “X”
Shipley has earned the right to get out of the slot position…too bad for M. Williams, he still got some looks late and made some good moves…I could see him and Buckner trading places/fighting for that spot all year long. Chiles looked VERY good, was really surprised by that.
Even those cats running at 3rd string O with Gilbert looked good…great place to be with that much depth.
And the long run I think we are better with Chiles getting the balls that would have gone to Collins. By the end the year Chiles could be a real weapon.
I watched the game and VM did cough the ball twice.. Which is uncharateristic, but he was getting many yards when he was running. I think first game jitters is what this is.. He will get out of it…
What you did not see what that the DBs had locked up all the receivers… I saw one blown assignment that resulted in a touchdown, but after that they were airtight.. Blake also had an Int.. very similar in situation to the one against Tech last year, only this time he caught it.. It was tipped and went straight into his hands..
I would say that the one of the highlights of the game was the secondary
I was was anxious to see Scott and Thomas back at safety. I wanted to see Scott lay down the hammer a few times. Brewster had a nice diving interception tonight though.
While we give Texas criticism for scheduling a bunch of cupcakes
but how’s that working out for OU. Of all years, OU needed to schedule a few easy games, especially early to develop their raw offensive line. The penalties and allowing that hit to Bradford obviously cost them the game, along with their MNC hopes.
I have to give props to OU for scheduling BYU and Miami in the same season.
But, I can stand behind MB’s OOC policy: one big conference team each year. This season, it was supposed to be Arkie, but they backed out for some reason.
The Bradford injury hurt OU, but you know what else cost them the game? They sucked. Nothing about that team seemed exceptional. The defense was good, but they gave up important big plays. I’m just sick of watching OU lose on big stages. From Texas’ vantage point, a loss that hurts the conference hurts Texas.
You know what made me really happy was to see how poor a shape their offensive line was in.. Kindle and Acho are going to have a field day with Bradford. After that game Bradford will wish that he had gone to the NFL instead of coming back. Boy they sucked on protecting their quarterback
Because the other 4 bowls wont see an extra dime. The same thing could be said about a playoff and I don’t see that happening any time soon. The cotton bowl missed its chance in the 90s. It is now a second tier bowl.
that is available in a stadium that seats 100,000. It might take 7-10 years, but Cowboys Stadium will push out one of the BCS Bowls (probably Orange or Fiesta) or be added to the BCS.
Defense getting three turnovers, kick return for a TD, passing game, another tailback weapon in DJ Monroe, runaway victory, etc.
But, and I’m not meaning to be negative,
To me, the biggest story of the night is injuries and academics. It is possible that we may have lost three starters (Brandon Collins, Christian Scott, and Michael Huey) and an experience backup (Deon Beasley) for the season. The uncertainty surrounding those four is a bigger story than a 39 point blowout.
The criticisms of Mcgee need to be aimed at his ability to hold onto the ball, not his ability to run it. He ran well as our main back. He also did a good job picking up defenders. All he needs to do is hold onto the ball, and i think he can do that. Monroe will be a great change of speed back.
While vondrell wasn’t as effective as we wanted him to be, I think it’s best he gets his 15 carries a game while Monroe is the change of pace speed back who get 8-10. Plus Cody in short-yardage situations. Fozzy gets no touches til 100% healthy for at least a couple weeks of practice, before stepping into a game.
What we did good:
1. Run the ball. Vondrell is bigger and is getting good yardage
2. Wide Recievers were all good. Dan Buckner had a couple of great plays. I dont think we ever used the tight ends
3. Special Teams
What we did Ok
1. Colt McCoy had a mediocre day(my standards). While he did get alot of yds in the air, he fumbled a time or two, threw and INT, and some of his passes were just bad
What needs to be improved
1. Defend against the pass
2. Special teams coverage
3. Last year the RBs didnt fumble once. THis year we already have 2 fumbles by McGee. He has improved but if hes gonna turn the ball over, I want Cody Johnson or Monroe in the game
I think that Davis is going to probably move Monroe to the starting tailback position. The guy has vision, and he kept finding holes. And what a kick return that was
I am worried about Huey, the replays on that injury did not look good and we do not have a whole lot of depth on that position.
During the preseason, it was fun to indulge in all the potential similarities between 2005 and 2009 – returning champion with a Heisman trophy winning QB as a potential opponent, Rose Bowl for the title game, etc. but then it was finally time to get the season started.
Well, there’s one more thing. The last time OU started 0-1 was 2005 … when they lost to another Mountain West team. If these are indeed omens … I like them!
(Thanks for the replay info. Being stuck in Florida, I’ll have to hope we can get at least the Big 12 No Huddle version.)
In other news anyone keeping tabs on the Cal/Maryland game? Cal QBs are usually really shoddy and throw tons of INTs but right now Kevin Riley looks like a legit heisman candidate (in the first game anyways) with his 3 Td 0 Int ration and 259 yds. 3rd quarter isnt even over….
- Monroe looked like the real deal both as RB and Kick Returner.
- Goodwin and Gilbert also looked good.
- Okafor had some nice plays.
- McGee looked good running the football aside from the fumbles. Hopefully the coaches can immunize him from Jamaal-itis.
- I don’t think I saw any designed QB runs, thank goodness.
- Agreed Chiles looked better than expected, could be a real threat at WR.
- Buckner is making some plays from that Flex position.
- nice grab on the INT by Brewster. His dad won in OT today, hope he was watching.
- Overall, a few sloppy plays, I was surprised at the pass Colt made that led to an INT, bad decision but he bounced back. It appears that we could have SOME form of a respectable running game aside from Colt, committee or otherwise. Defense has room for improvement but looks good for the most part. Special teams looked good, too.
Especially considering what happened to everyone else. Oregon at Boisey, tOSU barely surviving Navy (a game they really should have lost, but their two-point conversion to tie the game at the end got intercepted and run back for two points), and of course, OU. Oh, poor OU. Time to work out the kinks for Wyoming!
I have to say, I feel bad for Bradford. He really seems like a classy guy and he’s an incredible QB. As for OU losing, it’s one less undefeated team on the list. maybe it hurts our SOS ever-so-slightly but it won’t matter if we win out.
And I didn’t say it explicitly above, but overall the Horns looked great. The offense gave up 3 turnovers but still put 52 points on the board. The mistakes seemed to be rustiness/mental, and not a matter of effort, and honestly both of McGee’s fumbles were caused by solid hits by the defense.
Bradford made a really bad decision and now he and his teammates know it. If Stoops talked Bradford into staying, I wonder how much of a credibility hit he will take with the team.
-Colt and Jordan have something special
-Very generic defense and offense schemes
-When DJ had a couple of nice runs, I could just see everyone on this forum calling him “The next great running back”
-I need to apologize to John Chiles, I’m now a believer
-Did Sergio attend tonight’s game?
-Hello Kenny Vaccaro, I got my eye on you. I liked how the kid tried to punish everyone.
-Keenan Robinson, Want Moar
-Garrett Gilbert looked great. Totally confident, huge ovation.
-The flex tight end seems tailor made for Dan Buckner.
-Good showing from the fans, fun game, nice and loud. I still get pissed when we fire up Texas Fight when we are in our offense, but what are you going to do?
I would say 7/10 is very fair. There is plenty to work on and I think that is a good thing. Now we have to quit getting hurt. Hook’em!
In other good news, Taylor Potts threw 3 INT’s against North Dakota’s defense tonight. Think our secondary isn’t salivating for a chance at redemption in a couple of weeks?
Oh, and our other #2 ranked team is kicking some Wahine butt in Hawai’i right now. The Gazelles won the first set of the match 25-11, playing on #4 Hawaii’s home court.
Hawaii fights back to win the 3rd set 22-25. Texas had a habit of losing focus in the 3rd set last year, let’s hope that’s not the start of the same trend this year. Time for Hooker to bring the hammer down.
The Gazelles absolutely demolish Hawii 25-11 in the 4th set to with the match and solidify their claim to the #2 spot in the rankings. We finally got a stellar performance from Juliann tonight. She’s had a quiet start to the season, but led the team with 18 kills.
But the star of the night has to be Ashley Engle, who recorded a triple-double (kills, digs, assists) in the match tonight – quite a feat! Not sure if she’s done that before in her career, will have to wait for texassports.com to post their recap to confirm.
First triple-double for Ashley, and first for the Gazelles since Jenny Andrew did it against KSU in 2003, per texassports. Congrats to Ashley on yet another career highlight.
The directional colleges of impoverished Southern states cannot defeat us. And the state universities of underpopulated Western states had better watch out.
The sooner offense wasn’t looking that great with Bradford at the helm. Sam got 14 points in nearly two full quarters of work? Sooners could be in trouble this year.
they fumbled OUs punt and OU got the ball as BYUs 35. You give a team a 35 yard field, they should get a touchdown. The other scoring drive, and the one where they lost Bradford, BYU gave the Sooners 29 yards in penalties.
1. Fans were early, and were reasonably loud considering the opponent. Most impressive—The Fans stayed all the way until the end of the game despite light rain. Record 100,000+ people. We are going to get that place rocking this year!!
2. Shipley for Heisman. Why not?
3. Marquise Goodwin. He is my favorite “secret” weapon. I have watched him in track and think he is amazing. He has always said that he is a football player that is a track star. LIke that attitude. World class long jumper too…..can’t wait to see him block some punts/kicks.
DJ Monroe and Gilbert were obviously excellent and exceeded the high expectations. Goodwin has stayed under the radar—but he is FAST and he can play!!!
59-20
overall I’d say it was an 8/10 performance.

as long as Texas beats them they are done, for the national title picture. We may not go undefeated but two loss ou isn’t getting in the champ game.
Hull Fan - September 5, 2009
a bit off-topic
cowboys stadium is going to be a great bcs venue. I can’t wait for the horns to play there for a championship someday.
burrito - September 5, 2009
No doubt
That would be a true home-field advantage
goingforthecorner - September 5, 2009
like texas stadium?
sorry.
zamm - September 5, 2009
How is it going to be a great BCS venue?
I dont see the current BCS bowls giving up a bunch of money to add a bowl.
Wells - September 5, 2009
that's what i was thinking
zamm - September 5, 2009
Umm because the Cotton Bowl
is going to be played at Jerryworld and will eventually be added to the BCS rotation. Guarantee it! Too much money on the table to walk away from.
2Cor12:9 - September 6, 2009
Who's Money
Because the other 4 bowls wont see an extra dime. The same thing could be said about a playoff and I don’t see that happening any time soon. The cotton bowl missed its chance in the 90s. It is now a second tier bowl.
Wells - September 6, 2009
The kind of money
that is available in a stadium that seats 100,000. It might take 7-10 years, but Cowboys Stadium will push out one of the BCS Bowls (probably Orange or Fiesta) or be added to the BCS.
Kineslaw - September 6, 2009
You don't necessarily have to drop one of the the four
just add it and make it a five bowl rotation.
2Cor12:9 - September 6, 2009
it would also be a way to pacify the non-bcs schools by giving them a better shot at a big bowl
I don’t see why the money hats the run the bcs would say no to another multi-million dollar generating bowl game. or the conferences for that matter.
burrito - September 6, 2009
They already did that
it is the “National Championship” game, and they kept all the money for themselves.
Wells - September 6, 2009
more off topic
UW and LSU tied, 10 – 10.
I would love to see the Huskies make magic tonight.
Kool Hand - September 5, 2009
Has Russell Shepard got in or
did Miles trick him with his empty promises?
2Cor12:9 - September 6, 2009
Plenty of positives tonight
Defense getting three turnovers, kick return for a TD, passing game, another tailback weapon in DJ Monroe, runaway victory, etc.
But, and I’m not meaning to be negative,
To me, the biggest story of the night is injuries and academics. It is possible that we may have lost three starters (Brandon Collins, Christian Scott, and Michael Huey) and an experience backup (Deon Beasley) for the season. The uncertainty surrounding those four is a bigger story than a 39 point blowout.
awiggo - September 5, 2009
and it sucks to sit here knowing next to nothing about any of them
zamm - September 5, 2009
I will also add Chiles' production as WR as a positive
goingforthecorner - September 5, 2009
+1
He looked worlds better than I expected
zamm - September 5, 2009
Mcgee
The criticisms of Mcgee need to be aimed at his ability to hold onto the ball, not his ability to run it. He ran well as our main back. He also did a good job picking up defenders. All he needs to do is hold onto the ball, and i think he can do that. Monroe will be a great change of speed back.
UT_BKC - September 5, 2009
I agree
Based on what I saw, McGee ran the ball well, he just needs to protect the ball better
Crimson Fog - September 5, 2009
Agree
While vondrell wasn’t as effective as we wanted him to be, I think it’s best he gets his 15 carries a game while Monroe is the change of pace speed back who get 8-10. Plus Cody in short-yardage situations. Fozzy gets no touches til 100% healthy for at least a couple weeks of practice, before stepping into a game.
BigTexBD - September 5, 2009
7/10
Perspective from someone who was at the game
MJY6087 - September 5, 2009
Monroe is a stud
I think that Davis is going to probably move Monroe to the starting tailback position. The guy has vision, and he kept finding holes. And what a kick return that was
I am worried about Huey, the replays on that injury did not look good and we do not have a whole lot of depth on that position.
Crimson Fog - September 5, 2009
Doesn't special teams and special teams coverage fall under the same umbrella?
2Cor12:9 - September 6, 2009

Just a thought
During the preseason, it was fun to indulge in all the potential similarities between 2005 and 2009 – returning champion with a Heisman trophy winning QB as a potential opponent, Rose Bowl for the title game, etc. but then it was finally time to get the season started.
Well, there’s one more thing. The last time OU started 0-1 was 2005 … when they lost to another Mountain West team. If these are indeed omens … I like them!
(Thanks for the replay info. Being stuck in Florida, I’ll have to hope we can get at least the Big 12 No Huddle version.)
Delaney - September 5, 2009
another one is that players at RB emerged that no one expected. and ifi recall, melton scored alot of points against lafeyette
texfan23 - September 6, 2009
In other news anyone keeping tabs on the Cal/Maryland game? Cal QBs are usually really shoddy and throw tons of INTs but right now Kevin Riley looks like a legit heisman candidate (in the first game anyways) with his 3 Td 0 Int ration and 259 yds. 3rd quarter isnt even over….
MJY6087 - September 5, 2009
first game impressions
just got home from DKR.
SelimSivad - September 5, 2009
Colt's Int
looked like he was locked in on Chiles. I think it was more about trying to hard to get Chiles involved.
Wells - September 5, 2009
I don't agree
It looked like Colt should have gone to his second option, but he forced it into his third. Bad read.
run Bevo run - September 6, 2009
Could be

Wells - September 6, 2009
Sloppy Victory? I'll Take It
Especially considering what happened to everyone else. Oregon at Boisey, tOSU barely surviving Navy (a game they really should have lost, but their two-point conversion to tie the game at the end got intercepted and run back for two points), and of course, OU. Oh, poor OU. Time to work out the kinks for Wyoming!
iamjackburton - September 5, 2009
OU
I have to say, I feel bad for Bradford. He really seems like a classy guy and he’s an incredible QB. As for OU losing, it’s one less undefeated team on the list. maybe it hurts our SOS ever-so-slightly but it won’t matter if we win out.
And I didn’t say it explicitly above, but overall the Horns looked great. The offense gave up 3 turnovers but still put 52 points on the board. The mistakes seemed to be rustiness/mental, and not a matter of effort, and honestly both of McGee’s fumbles were caused by solid hits by the defense.
SelimSivad - September 6, 2009
No, I'm pissed at Bradford
He should have taken the stupid amounts of NFL money he was projected to, and not risked an injury this season.
Someone gave him some bad advice.
notsofst - September 6, 2009
Like Stoops?
Bradford made a really bad decision and now he and his teammates know it. If Stoops talked Bradford into staying, I wonder how much of a credibility hit he will take with the team.
Kineslaw - September 6, 2009
Quick hits I observed
Hook’em!

Kenny Vaccaro...
….is a football player! Anyone stumbling in front of him should be prepared to lose his spot.
It was good to see Garrett Gilbert get some decent playing time. Having the #2 ready to play is always important….just ask Stoops.
Two touchdowns to La-Monroe is never acceptable. Regardless of the MOV, we should be playing at a level high enough to keep them out of our endzone.

patienthornsfan - September 6, 2009
Oh, and our other #2 ranked team is kicking some Wahine butt in Hawai’i right now. The Gazelles won the first set of the match 25-11, playing on #4 Hawaii’s home court.
patienthornsfan - September 6, 2009
Gazelles take the second set 25-22.
patienthornsfan - September 6, 2009
Hawaii fights back to win the 3rd set 22-25. Texas had a habit of losing focus in the 3rd set last year, let’s hope that’s not the start of the same trend this year. Time for Hooker to bring the hammer down.
patienthornsfan - September 6, 2009
Leave No Doubt, Part II
The Gazelles absolutely demolish Hawii 25-11 in the 4th set to with the match and solidify their claim to the #2 spot in the rankings. We finally got a stellar performance from Juliann tonight. She’s had a quiet start to the season, but led the team with 18 kills.
But the star of the night has to be Ashley Engle, who recorded a triple-double (kills, digs, assists) in the match tonight – quite a feat! Not sure if she’s done that before in her career, will have to wait for texassports.com to post their recap to confirm.
patienthornsfan - September 6, 2009
The answer is no
First triple-double for Ashley, and first for the Gazelles since Jenny Andrew did it against KSU in 2003, per texassports. Congrats to Ashley on yet another career highlight.

that's not the horn that's messed up.
look at the actual horn. it’s completely in tact. he just has a scuff on there as well.
billyzane - September 6, 2009
its not a scuff or anything, its an air vent in the helmet. i think that is one of the revolution helmets...
texfan23 - September 6, 2009
I believe what you see on the left side of the helmet is an air hole.
Depending on the helmet and the placement of the logo, it appears as if the horn goes down.
NeTexHorn - September 6, 2009
am I reading the stats page correctly?
no sacks on the day for anyone on the defense?
meanwhile, ULM had two sacks. Were both sacks of Colt?
Beergut - September 6, 2009
ULM got credited with a sack
when Colt dropped the shotgun snap and then fell on it. The other one was actually a sack due to pressure.
The referee kept calling them LMU, glad he didn’t call us TU.
2Cor12:9 - September 6, 2009

ULM had a GPS for their offensive line? ;-)

Observations After 3rd Viewing of Game
I just completed my third complete viewing of the game and missed a few things the first few times:
1. Kheeston Randall tackled a RB on the sideline. This guy is freakishly fast for a big man. Hope he is strong enough.
2. The offense was incredibly efficient and in rhythm when they were in the “fast break” mode. Looked in midseason form.
3. Was really impressed with the coaching staff – as the impact of Buckner, Monroe, Chiles just really shocked me.
4. If OU had Garret Gilbert – they would be 1-0. I know it was mop up time – but how can a true freshman be that polished – just ridiculous.
realmccoy - September 6, 2009
I dont know about #4
And its not a knock against Gilbert.
The sooner offense wasn’t looking that great with Bradford at the helm. Sam got 14 points in nearly two full quarters of work? Sooners could be in trouble this year.
BoddickerIsClutch - September 6, 2009
Only 7 points for Bradford.
I think they got the FG to end the half just after he got injured.
HornPossessed - September 6, 2009
The 7 points came after a BYU muffed punt
they fumbled OUs punt and OU got the ball as BYUs 35. You give a team a 35 yard field, they should get a touchdown. The other scoring drive, and the one where they lost Bradford, BYU gave the Sooners 29 yards in penalties.
future_longhorn_dad - September 7, 2009
I caught #1 too
That RB had broken some tackles, and Randall ran over to him and yanked him to the ground with one arm. Randall is fast and damn strong.

Thoughts from the game
