Two more Longhorn football players will miss spring practice following surgeries, the university announced Thursday. Junior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and redshirt freshman Greg Daniels won't be healthy enough to practice after having shoulder issues repaired, joining sophomore defensive back Adrian Phillips, who had revealed his own shoulder surgery on Twitter. All three should be recovered in time for summer workouts.
The most remarkable story is that of Jeffcoat, who sustained a torn pectoral muscle against Texas A&M, but was able to play a significant role in the Holiday Bowl victory over Cal, recording two sacks and three tackles for loss. Dude is tough. And while it would certainly benefit his development to practice in the spring, players like Reggie Wilson and Cedric Reed probably need the reps more than does the more experienced Jeffcoat.

As for Daniels, the move will at least temporarily shelve any plans to give the high school defensive end a look at tight end. While Daniels isn't quite on the edge of becoming a strong attrition candidate, it was to be an important spring for him, especially considering that both redshirt sophomore Chris Whaley and true freshman Desmond Jackson had passed him on the depth chart, never a good sign for future hopes of contributions.
On the positive side, all three are expected to recover in time for summer workouts.
A fourth Longhorn also underwent surgery -- junior Luke Poehlmann, who had his knee scoped, but should be able to participate in spring practice, where he may well continue to work as a jumbo tight end.

So it seems that Luke Poehlmann will be back next year
Heard some rumblings that he may move on since he has already graduated.

Wild speculation by BFLT
There was never any substance to it.

Jeffcoat always seems to be injured
But the guy definitely has guts if he played with that injury in the bowl. Reminds me of about 1999 or so, when Peter Boulware played most of the season with basically one functional arm. Anyway, I hope JJ is able to tie together one or two relatively uninterrupted seasons before departing.
I’m really looking forward to seeing strides from Reggie. Seems like he has copious talent, and mostly needs opportunity and reps. I would think the idea would be to have him take over Okafor’s position in 2013, but if he can contribute on either side, great.

One of his Dad, Jim Jeffcoat's, Dallas buddies, Ken Norton, Jr. ...
… basically played the entire 1993 season with a torn biceps so the Cowboys wouldn’t be w/out him. He led the team in tackles and it worked out pretty well as they won the Super Bowl. Maybe Jackson got some advice from him prior to playing in the Holiday Bowl. The biggest losses of the Cowboys in that era were Norton and Stepnoski walking in free agency. They were never the same after that. Norton, Jr. was a very tough nut anchor on that D.

J. Jeffcoat injury?
What was the injury he had at the beginning of season? Are was that just a rumor as to why he seemed to start slowly?
Burnedsince61 - January 12, 2012
Think he just wasn't playing well.

I hope the whole defense plays that badly next season.
If that’s his “off” game, kid’s got a pretty high ceiling from here on out.

You hope the entire defense plays like Jeffcoat did early in the season?
He seemed pretty so-so at that point, didn’t he? I may not be remembering well.

Bicker, Bicker, Bicker.
‘Twas not the point. The point was that Jeffcoat is a very good player, even when he’s “so-so”.
Lighten up, Francis.

Jeffcoat plan
Get surgery.
Get healthy.
Get stronger/faster
Get sacks
Get a BSC bowl win
Get paid

I'd like to see rinse/repeat for steps 3-5 of that plan.

Good point GOBR about the increased reps for Ced Reed and Reggie Wilson
They need to develop in a hurry. Both Jeffcoat and Oak could be gone in 2013.
