All the Big 12-2 Conference news that is and isn't fit to read...
And some other stuff.

We're playing Kansas State.

"One guy doesn't do what he has to do, and it breaks down the timing of everything," Barnes said.

Of course, television dictates so many things now, the money from TV. … It’s about the student-athletes. They’re the ones out there paying the price. They’ve paid the price for four or five years. You just want them to have the chance to compete and find out who’s the best in the country and make for an entertaining game."

Brent Venables watch. [NewsOK]
Brent Venables spent the better part of the weekend in Clemson, S.C. Could he soon call it home?
Oklahoma’s longtime co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach spoke Saturday and Sunday with school officials about its defensive coordinator opening.
There's some kind of ambience in Clemson, South Carolina? [NewsOK]
Maybe Venables ends up at Kansas State? [ESPN Big 12 Blog]
The Bears have absolutely nothing to worry about. [Baylor Lariat]
Times have changed. [NewsOK]
The football salary raises are a hoot. Barry Switzer was awarded a new five-year contract and given a $6,000 per year pay boost — to $56,000. Bob Stoops now makes almost 100 times that. The $1 Hershey bar seem like a steal.
Eight assistant coaches also received raises: Merv Johnson to $42,000; Galen Hall $40,000; Gary Gibbs $39,000; Bobby Proctor, $37,000; Rex Norris $38,000; Lucious Selmon $37,000; Bill Shimek $31,000 and Scott Hill, $30,000. Now Clemson is trying to lure OU co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables with a contract that could approach $1 million a year.
We're all just waiting on West Virginia...[NewsOK]
est Virginia has told the Big 12 it plans to be out here for the 2012 season. And a common belief is that if the Mountaineers and Big East can't agree, West Virginia will just come and suffer whatever consequences follow.
But who knows what will happen? These are uncharted waters.
And finally...
Hey, Beergut. Did you miss something on I Am The 12th Man last week? Now, what was it? A game? [Houston Chronicle]
And this, too. [Washington Post]

OU's 2012 OOC schedule
If WVU can’t come, OU will still need to fill three OOC slots for the upcoming season. (TCU would have been one for OU.)
How? That can’t be an easy problem to solve.

Pretty sure most of the schools located in northern Louisiana were established for this very purpose

I see an FCS game or two in their future. nt

That's what I'd expect
Of course there are probably other teams that would be willing to cancel on games they’ve arranged.

Beergut - epiphany and irony
His latest post on coaching common talent to uncommon results is worth a read, if only for the well deserved laughs at his apparent tone suggesting he thinks he has really hit on something that nobody else has ever considered. I’m not exactly sure what the point of his post is, but it’s laughable that winning with two- and three-star recruits is some sort of revelation to him. The fact that A&M has never been able to do it doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been happening at several other programs.
TCU'90 - January 18, 2012
We’ve been saying that for years for just about everything over at 12th Man.

With Barking Carnival coming to SB Nation...
You would think they would take some people from the Fantake site and get them to take over that poor excuse for a blog like Kilgore Trout, Ag_in_TX, Colorado Ag, hell maybe even Aggie Rick…

I wonder if most or all of fantake
is coming to SBN as a part of Barking Carnival. Does Recruitocosm get left behind. I wonder because I was asked to help with the MMA stuff for BC when they make the switch. Of course, that was about a year ago, if not more, and things change.

He’s probably gonna ignore the fact that Texas is gonna win the State Farm Lone Star Showdown series for the 2nd year in a row I think Texas leads 6-1 right now

If he’s such a fan of coaching common talent to uncommon results you’d think he’d be a big fan of what Patterson has accomplished at TCU.
This is, of course, not the case.
HawkeyedFrog - January 18, 2012
You read my mind. :-) If any coach deserves kudos for that, it is Patterson. He deserved that top 15 coached listing for just that reason (and others, as well).
dimecoverage - January 18, 2012
Should have been coaches listing…
dimecoverage - January 18, 2012
My impression of Patterson is that he recruits athletes in high school, and moves them to defense
Recruiting high school QBs and RBs and making them into LBs and DEs in his defense. Taking HS athletes and putting them on defense to let them use their speed and athleticism to make plays isn’t anything new, particularly in a 4-2-5 defense. John Goodner and Spike Dykes were doing that at Texas Tech years ago, albeit from a 4-4 shell.
If Patterson is taking 2 and 3 star DEs and DTs and developing them into All-Americans and first round draft picks like Wickline is doing at OSU, I’d love to see research doing that.
I think Patterson is a good coach, my issue with him has to do with the fact that I think he is a whiner. I also think TCU has been at an advantage is the conference they have been in, which people have ignored when looking at Patterson. When you’re the only Texas school in the Mountain West, it isn’t that hard to pull better talent than San Diego State or Colorado State or Air Force.

Did they not teach reading comprehension the years you went to TCU?
I even tried to make it easy for you, and gave my reason for the post in the first two sentences. If simple reading comprehension is too difficult for you, maybe you should stick to something less difficult, like coloring books.
Beergut - January 19, 2012
i think someone touched a nerve
horns1025 - January 19, 2012
Beergut can't ban me from BON, can he?
TCU'90 - January 19, 2012
only in his wildest dreams is that possible
horns1025 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
No, he can’t. You are welcome here any day, any time.
dimecoverage - January 19, 2012
I think TCU'90 may not be the only one who struggles with reading comprehension on here

Venables is making $440K at OU
Chris Cosh made $285K last year at KSU. Clemson is paying OC Chad Morris $1.3M/yr. I really don’t know if KSU has the financial guns to bring back Venables, but if there were a guy they’d like to groom as the heir to Snyder, Venables would be a likely suspect.
As for Stoops’ off-season TTD list, I have to wonder if it should have defensive recruiting on it. Two of their three juco recruits (both rated 3* by Rivals) are defense, but only three more guys in their entire class are listed as defenders. Athlete Daniel Brooks seems likely to play corner. One way or the other, that’s a really thin defensive class, unless they can make some major strides between now and NSD. They do have offers out to MEJr., Agholor, and some other guys, but they’d have to hit a lot to make much of it.
burntorangehorn - January 18, 2012
Looking around, it looks like Agholor and aggie commit Colin Blake are the only semi-decent odds now
Blake seems like a pretty good safety prospect, but still, thin defensive class.

I wasn’t aware that you looked forward to my coverage of basketball so much.

Dear, dear Beergut, we look forward to anything you write.
In fact, our whole existence revolves around the musings of 12th Man.
