Star recruit Dorial Green-Beckham (left-center, no. 5) looked plenty happy and comfortable in his Arkansas jersey during an official visit last weekend (via @KennyOrjioke).
[Update]: A local television station in Springfield is reporting that DGB will hold his announcement ceremony shortly after 8:00 am CST on National Signing Day, February 1st. --GoBR--
The life of any mega recruit isn't exactly simple and uncomplicated at any point in the recruiting process and is much less so in the final days. Such is the case for Springfield (MO) wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, one of the top recruits in the country and the subject of never-ending speculation.
Besides an official visit last weekend to Arkansas and an official visit this coming weekend to home state Missouri, the 6-5, 220-pounder known simply as DGB hosted Tiger coach Gary Pinkel last week at his high school, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino in his home, and will reportedly host Texas head coach Mack Brown and wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt this week as well, most likely on Wednesday.
Got all that?
Conventional wisdom has Arkansas out in the lead due to the proximity of Fayetteville to Spingfield, the fact that DGB's girlfriend is slated to play college basketball at a smaller school in the state, and the return of Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson to lead the high-flying Piggie passing attack.

However, there are some rumblings that Mrs. Beckham doesn't particularly care for the slimy Petrino much as a man (edit: perhaps gutless and coward are more apt than slimy), while sources close to the Texas program continue to maintain that the Longhorns have a legitimate chance with the big wide receiver as a result of the work that Wyatt has put in during his recruitment, including the hard pitch in recent weeks that DGB is the only piece standing between the Longhorns and major offensive success.
Meanwhile, Gary Pinkel made quite a splash last week by showing up to Hillcrest in his helicopter amid speculation that the Tigers are finally a serious contender and perhaps ahead of Texas.
There have been some rumors that Texas has faded with DGB recently or been completely eliminated, but even though the Beckhams have kept a tight control on information coming out of their camp, they've expressed the desire not to waste the time of any coaching staffs recruiting DGB. The family followed through by notifying Alabama recently that the Crimson Tide were no longer under consideration. So, considering the lack of public pronouncement, it seems safe to assume that the 'Horns are still in the hunt.
The bottom line is the the quarterback situation at Texas, the distance from home, and the length of time it's been since DGB was in Austin -- mid-November for the Kansas State game -- probably all hurt the Longhorns. Still, Mack Brown will have the opportunity to make his final pitch and the thinking seems to be that were everything else equal, Texas would be in excellent position. If Brown can manage to assuage any concerns about David Ash and his future and the distance from home, the Longhorns could make a late move.
Again, since the Beckhams have handled DGB's recruitment in such a professional manner, it's extremely difficult to tell what exactly he's thinking. It's quite possible that he still hasn't made up his mind with just more than a week remaining under Signing Day.
Arkansas looks like the clear leader and favorite to land DGB, but there's still time for Texas, especially if DGB decides he's willing to venture away from home.

wow.
After all that I feel the same about where we stand with dgb. I think we have a chance but wouldnt go crazy if we didn’t get him.

class act
whatever this kid does, Texas or not, you have to respect the class with which he has handled being one of the nations top recruits. Would LOVE to have him at UT, but will watch with real interest and respect what he does from here on
Longhorn723 - January 24, 2012
Down at the Army game,
everyone that I talked to only had positive things to say about him. From what I saw, he appeared to deal with all the attention extremely well and while he avoided saying much of anything in interviews, he did so with a smile on his face. Considering the combination of his high-profile recruitment and the difficult living situation he came from, it’s remarkable that he is as polished and grounded as he is. For that, the Beckhams deserve a ton of credit, as well as DGB himself.

GoHornsGo90 - January 24, 2012
WTF??
I consider it a complete sign of maturity to wait till he has fully weighed all options before making a decision instead fo people who make a commitment early then de-commit. He hasn’t been flashy, hasn’t been a twitter diva, and has done nothing to seem classless. I detest the fact that we root for the same team when people make fucking idiotic comments like this.

Really? Does Springfield airport have a long enough runway so Mack can meet him in the UT Gulfstream G450 business jet?
But in all seriousness though, he seems like a great kid and would love to see him in burnt orange.

Have already had one Hog fan

if he likes to block
He will come to Texas. I think he wants to fit in a spread attack like arkannsas.
susuata - January 24, 2012
Disagree.
You build offensive packages around players like DGB and it wouldn’t include blocking.
spinmonkey - January 24, 2012
dgb
Would only be on the field a third of the offensive plays if he didn’t block. Waste of his skill and time. The longhorns want to run the ball 55 to 60 pecent this upcomming year.
susuata - January 24, 2012
And by his sophomore year
Those numbers would probably be flipped.
UPB13 - January 24, 2012
by your calculation...
If we ran approximately 85 plays a game, then we would throw the ball 40 times a game… I am sure more than his fair share of balls would be available… if he likes catching balls or dropping them…. unless they are TD’s…
longhorn35 - January 24, 2012
Yes and no
Arkansas’s offense is as perfect as it gets for Dorial, but most spread offenses (and I struggle with calling Arkansas a spread offense) don’t fit his skill set at all. Put him in an offense like Leach’s (or Greg Davis’) and you’re wasting his talents, because he’s best catching passes downfield where he can use his size, athleticism, and speed. He’d struggle a bit as a chain mover IMO. He will have a lot of success off of Arky’s play action verts and posts, assuming he goes there.
GoHornsGo90 - January 24, 2012
Every WR needs to block.
ESPECIALLY in a spread system.
40A - January 24, 2012
I get the impression he's the type of guy that will want to learn how to block well.
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
Maybe?
The best want to be the best right? Terrell Owens, one of the most self-centered WRs to ever play the game, was a GREAT blocker. Dez Bryant, GREAT blocker. The best WRs want to be the best at everything.
Besides, he’s 6’6 220, you don’t think he wouldn’t want to go and run down some little DBs?

DGB
Will not be a Longhorn IMO – god bless us for still being in it, but
- proximity
- family
- girlfriends choice of schools
- Arkansas’ pass happy offense
- Arkansas’ Heisman QB prospect
- Texas’ committment to the run
- Texas’ horrible QB’ing performance in 2011
And finally,
- proximity
- family
chupita - January 24, 2012
Agreed. But don't underestimate Mack's charm.
Mack will get the whole family in a group hug and they’ll all be sobbing inconsolably with joy, and they won’t even know why. They’ll all break from the “huddle” wearing UT gear and start laughing like loons while they start signing papers. The family, eyes still streaming, will just shake their heads in silence and disbelieving admiration as Mack makes his exit with the documents.
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
so its like watching a episode of Oprah minus everyone getting a car?
horns1025 - January 24, 2012
Sorry but
-okay it’s farther but it’s not across the country, it’s a three hour flight
-word is his parents don’t like Petrino and they love Mack
-I’m one of the few that has kept a relationship going since high school and into college, the catch is she goes to TCU and I’m in Austin, it can be done and he won’t have time for her since he’ll be busy every weekend
-they recruited like 5 receivers, in the next 3 years, they’ll probably have three different QB’s
-for one year, Ash is the real deal and he will play with DGB every year with Brewer possibly taking the reins
-Even if we run 60%of the time, there’s still approximately 30 passes a game and he’ll get plenty wherever he goes
-be ready to be surprised by Ash, he played and practiced with the fourth string and was a TRUE FRESHMAN when he was forced to play
-see above
-it looks as if his family wants him a little farther than most would suspect
btown1110 - January 24, 2012
Well,
- yea, still farther… 3 hours via plane, or 2.5 hours via car = cheaper for a college kid to go home for a weekend
- rumor, i would expect that if his parents “didn’t like Petrino” that they wouldn’t be supporting him going to Arkansas. Baseless, unproven rumor at best
- good for you, that’s a 3 hour drive and an hour flight… you’re right though – he should prolly break it off because he will be busy weekends anyway
- Arkansas has recruited 4 WR’s so far – only 1 4*, while UT has recruited 2 and is trying to recruit a 3rd or 4th in Daje Johnson or DGB himself. I still don’t know who our QB will be next year, the year after, or the year after that, however, they will have a good one next year in Wilson
- I HOPE that Ash is “the real deal”, but I don’t know any Longhorn that can make that statement with ANY level of certainty
- difference is, Petrino / Arkansas pass the ball 60+ % of the time. There’s a big difference there.
- I hope to hell that you are right cuz he played most of the year with the 1st team.
see above -
- I am not sure that his family particularly WANTS him farther away. That’s ridiculous really
chupita - January 24, 2012
Word is
They don’t like him going to Arkansas, they didn’t go on the visit with him, that should be a BIG concern to Arky

robthecob - January 25, 2012
This kid is going to a school that has a good, if not great, QB. That limits the longhorns chances in my view.
I believe it will be Arky or Mizzou.
burmbuster - January 24, 2012
Ash will be a better passing QB than Franklin
Soon. Also James, bless his heart, barely has better than a Case McCoy arm.
GoHornsGo90 - January 24, 2012
Uh oh. You went there. Don't go there.
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
*shrug*
Not trying to incite an argument. Case obviously doesn’t have a good arm, neither does Franklin. Ash has his issues as well. All three need to improve.
GoHornsGo90 - January 24, 2012
Totally agree, but GhoBR just said that this topic is verboten!
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
With the potential
of our running attack, many teams will have to consider putting a safety in or near the box which should open up all kinds of opportunities for our receivers.
And with a year, spring practice, summer workouts and the fall under his belt, Ash is going to have a good year throwing the ball.
greggym - January 24, 2012
While I tend to agree with your statement about Ash,
I would really prefer that this thread does not melt down into another discussion of the quarterback situation, because that may have to be mostly off limits until the season starts.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - January 24, 2012
Dang it. OK. : (
Can we get the moratorium lifted a little during spring practice at least? Then shut it down again until August?
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
If practices are closed again
then anything coming out will just be speculation until the spring game, which will then be overblown and overanalyzed, so I don’t know.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - January 24, 2012
Sigh. Will have to find a new hobby.
WreckerTex - January 24, 2012
Sadness. Can't we find some kickers to argue about?!
robthecob - January 24, 2012
The speculation last year wasn't too far off
The rumor mills all said Gilbert looked the best, the coaches liked Ash more than anyone had expected, and Connor Wood looked bad. That’s decent accuracy for anonymous reports on a closed practice.
LongCat - January 24, 2012
Mack
Will assurdely know how to spin the best facts for DGB to play at Texas and weaken the strengths of ARK (e.g. Better QB, etc…)
Having DGB’s parents on Mack’s side is a big positive though.
jtdoes - January 24, 2012 via mobile
I don't think that Mack has a "negative recruiting" bone in his body. Just can't see it.
I’ll bet he is the #1 target for negative recruiting from others but he’s just got too much class to do it himself.
robthecob - January 24, 2012
yeh but
Mack pointing out our strengths which just so happen to be weaknesses of the arkies isnt negative recruiting. Besides, if the recruit comes to the conclusion it’s not Mack’s fault right? Right.

robthecob - January 24, 2012
Did Pinkel's helicopter visit count as his "in home"? If so......
then I certainly like the idea of Mack getting the last visit in from among the coaches.
Nunna Yo Bizness - January 24, 2012
No, not an in-home, as they never left the Hillcrest campus.
Also, Petrino was there the same day and he still has an in-home coming up AFTER Mack’s visit on Wednesday.
And don’t forget that Dorial is visiting Mizzou this weekend, so it looks like Pinkel gets the last shot. Mizzou QB recruit Maty Mauk is scheduled to be in Columbia for his official visit, too, and you know he’ll want to convince Dorial on the possibilities of the all-time high school leaders in passing and receiving yardage playing together.
Just my two cents.
Cardina1 - January 24, 2012
I personally don't think it will be Arky. Momma doesn't like Petrino and the family doesn't like.....
the academics. I tend to think it will be Mizzou if proximity to home ends up being the deciding factor.
Nunna Yo Bizness - January 24, 2012

GREAT FREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ON SUBJECT OF DGB’S FAMILY
A Couple More Smoke Rings From El Cohiba Grande
First the big news on the Big Dog, Dorial Green-Beckham. Now to the lay the groundwork, you need to remember our past reports about Sally Brown’s influence on recruiting. To recap, Sally is great at making parents, especially mothers, feel at ease with their decision to send their babies miles away from home. Specifically, Sally Brown gives out her cell phone number to every recruit’s mother and tells parents and mothers to call or text any time about anything under the sun especially if they’re concerned about how their child will be cared for while in Austin. It’s an aspect of Texas recruiting that doesn’t get enough credit.
So what does this have to do with DGB?
The Cigar tells us that DGB’s mother and Sally swapped phone numbers on or around DGB’s visit to Texas. More importantly, Dorial’s mother has reached out to Sally on a very frequent basis and the two have developed a strong bond during the process which spans nearly 3 months. Needless to say the two have hit it off and Mrs. Beckham is pulling for Texas in this saga. In fact, we’re told there’s not a coaching staff or school in the race that Mrs. Beckham trusts more than Texas at this point, and it’s one of the reasons Texas is right in the thick of this race. If Mack Brown was smart he’d bring Sally to the in-home.

OBdoc - January 25, 2012
The "package deal," so to speak...
burntorangehorn - January 25, 2012
I hope this is a joke...
but I’ve seen it so many times that I did want to weigh in on it and give a woman’s perspective.
Besides the fact that I don’t think Dodds would stoop to this, I don’t think it is something that he would want to do because:
1) he purposefully keeps the number of sports teams at Texas much lower than other colleges so that each program can have access to the most money and the best facilities, giving each the best chance to succeed – I don’t think he, or anyone else, would want to give a scholarship to a girl that might not help the women’s b-ball team actually get better; and,
2) it would set a very bad precedent for future football recruits and/or could be even be construed as “buying” the recruit.
But really, the main thing I want to point out to you guys is the effect it would have on his GF. First, it would probably be a bit insulting to her, if not also embarrassing, to only be offered a scholarship by a school so that her boyfriend will go there. If she truly desires to play b-ball, then she probably wants to go where her skills as a player will be valued and she could also contribute. While that certainly could be possible at Texas, if they haven’t offered her on her on merits, it isn’t probable.
Second, she would be fighting the perception that she was brought here only to get DGB to play football at Texas. This would exist among her teammates, her coaches, and the ENTIRE UT campus. That is a lot of judgment to put on an 18 year old girl. “You’re not really an athlete. You’re just eye-candy who got DGB to play for the football team.”
This would, honestly, be made worse because of her looks. Many of you have commented on how beautiful she is, so I finally clicked on one of the links that was posted (on Recruitocosm, I think it was). She is a very beautiful young woman. And while that will give her a lot of advantages in life, in this case it would be a huge hinderance. Beautiful women often times face an inherent bias from others that they haven’t had to actually work for what they have. Other women, in particular, can be especially vicious.
And you guys want this girl to come be part of a women’s basketball team? A women’s basketball team.
I could elaborate further, but this post is already getting pretty long.
I understand the thought process behind this sentiment, but I think it is seriously flawed. Some of you are just viewing this girl as a pawn in DGB’s recruitment instead of as an individual with her own preferences and feelings.
Final disclaimer: I realize most of you might be joking. But again, I’ve seen this so many times over the past few months that on the off chance that any of you are serious about this, I just wanted to point out that this involves a young woman who has her own future to consider, not just her boyfriend’s.

Right.
No one was joking about it. At all.
danielt - January 25, 2012
You're right, I misspoke.
Not everyone was joking about it. Apologies.
pleaseplaykindle - January 25, 2012
It was definitely a joke...

Hookem.com
is reporting that Mack will not have his in-home with DGB today, as he is apparently in Van visiting with Dalton Santos trying to get him to flip. I believe that Petrino is scheduled for Thursday, so the window of opportunity appears to be closing. I have to think that it ends up happening, but I’m not sure when that will be.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - January 25, 2012
Mack may be
Wheeling and dealing trying to make sure he gets that last visit. Pulling the wool over the competition’s eyes!
GoHornsGo90 - January 25, 2012
Mack is a recruiting guru...
he is the master at this….
longhorn35 - January 25, 2012
That sounds plausible
Although I’d be irked if I were the nation’s top recruit, and a coach whose bread and butter is personal connections rescheduled his in-home visit to my house so he could go meet with some other kid.
burntorangehorn - January 25, 2012
maybe it was always set for a later date... TBD based on when other coaches were done...
basically giving Mack the Last shot at DGB and Mom and Dad…
longhorn35 - January 25, 2012
Good call.
We get a lot of great info from a lot of great sources, but it’s not always 100%.
40A - January 25, 2012
Mack you sneaky devil you
Oh he’s gonna have the last visit before signing day.

Mack: "Watch out, DGB! Don't step on that piece of glass."
DGB: "Momma, do you know what he did at the in-home visit? We were walking across Guadalupe to the CO-OP, and he pointed out some glass to walk around. And I always think of that when people ask me what I’m doing w/ Mack Brown. And I never get nervous around him. So we started spending all this time together, at the on-campus visit. But I could feel him getting anxious. And then, I knew there would be a confrontation over committing. And he started to get that look the other night. You know that look like he gave Case McCoy in the Oklahoma game? And then, you know its gonna be an issue, so I went thru all the different feelings and arguments you’re supposed to go thru.
Momma: “Did he act like Bob Stoops?!”
DGB: “Momma, no. But I didnt want any problems. So I decided to commit to the Razorbacks. But then I committed to the Longhorns anyway. Hook ’em!”
robthecob - January 25, 2012
if no in-visit from Mack
Were officially toast
jtdoes - January 25, 2012 via mobile
agreed
but unless something drastic changes I would be shocked if Mack didn’t get his in home
cade21 - January 25, 2012
Can everybody on BON just do me this one small favor purty please?
DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC MELTDOWN IF HE DOES NOT CHOOSE TEXAS!!!!
That shit is embarrassing.
Thanks for your support.

But nuthin wrong about hoping to see this kid in burnt orange.
jtdoes - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Oh I'm hoping, too.
I even built a shrine in my house with some candles and incense and reading out of an incantation book I bought on eBay just to turn DGB into a zombie and say “I will follow you to hell and back Coach Brown” when Mack shows up at his dorrstep. Just a normal January day in the life of a Texas fan.
spinmonkey - January 25, 2012
If you did that same routine for Mario Edwards ...
… PLEASE STOP NOW!!
robthecob - January 25, 2012
Hahahahaha
Greatness.

I'm gonna melt down BIG TIME!
I am going to fill the ethernet with the most intense whining and hand wringing known to man!
I will infuriate every poster on this blog, their friends, girl friends AND their mothers!
My reputation (which is already a POS) will be lower than the earths core ( I stole this from another poster because I liked it).
I will definitly have to change my moniker as I will be banned on every blog, including TexAgs!
I….WANT….DGB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Snide Aside - January 28, 2012
I'm a little disappointed in this crew.
No Mack Brown Wants Your Sandwich references? Cause it sounds like he’s pretty hungry this week.
utexas87 - January 25, 2012
It appears he's still pushing for the chateaubriand, even if the prime rib is out of the question
Looks like he’ll end up with a burger, though. Nothing wrong with that, I guess.
burntorangehorn - January 25, 2012
Yeah, I thought of it but decided that it would be too easy.
No, that would be TOO easy!
robthecob - January 25, 2012
Arkansas has ugly colors
DGB needs to take that into consideration
horns1025 - January 25, 2012
HILARIOUS
This article is for the most part hilarious.
First of all, DGB’s GF is going to UMKC, not a school in ARK.
Texas really is stroking themselves on this one… and pretending Missouri hasn’t been a huge contender in this is a joke. It really shows the ego of Texas, once again.
The Texas powered Rivals.com and business partner ESPN have completely ignored the possibility of Missouri being a contender in getting DGB.
Texas is at the BOTTOM of the list, I guarantee you that. Farthest from home, no QB, and Missouri wooped you asses this year.
This article is egotistical at best.
Mograyback - January 25, 2012
yea your turf really kicked our ass
horns1025 - January 25, 2012
There is a lot wrong with this post
That makes me very sad to attend Missouri…
GoHornsGo90 - January 25, 2012
Coach Pinkel, are you drinking again?!
robthecob - January 25, 2012
It's Missouri where meth trumps alcohol
Impressive they’ve found the internet though
Horncasting - January 25, 2012

robthecob - January 26, 2012
You sure about that UMKC thing?
I haven’t been able to find anything stating that she’s been offered a scholarship there. I do see that she’s possibly in line for one of the 2-3 scholarships College of the Ozarks might have for this class. CoO is under 2hrs. from Ark, and 3.5hrs. from Mizzou.
burntorangehorn - January 26, 2012
If she's CofO material,
no way she gets a “friendly” offer at our team.
40A - January 27, 2012
That's what I was thinking
I did find an article that said she was hoping to catch the eye of the UMKC staff. UMKC isn’t a bad school, and they seem to have a decent team for a smaller D-I school. It also says she’s had “recruiting dialogue” with William Jewell and Avila, which are both KC area colleges. AU is NAIA, WJC is currently NAIA, but will become NCAA D2 this fall.
I think it’s pretty unlikely she’d get an offer from Texas State, let alone Texas, but there are NAIA and D2 options in the area. Huston-Tillotson is right there in Austin, although it’s a HBCU, which may or may not be what she’d want. Our Lady of the Lake just started playing NAIA basketball in 2009, and is in San Antonio. There are lots of NAIA schools around Dallas, of course, but that’s farther away. D2 schools include Incarnate Word (San Antonio), St. Edwards (Austin), St. Mary’s (San Antonio), and Tarleton St. (Stephenville). I’m not sure if I’m missing any that are closer than Dallas or Houston, and I’m thinking she wouldn’t be interested in a D3 school. I said I wouldn’t speculate on the gf issue with DGB, but for purposes of knowing options, those are the schools in the area. I doubt it’s likely she pops up on any of those schools’ radards, though, considering she plays at a tiny school in southern Missouri.
burntorangehorn - January 27, 2012
MU
Missouri has, according to ESPN, the next big thing at QB in James Franklin. And we also have the SPREAD that so many comments think will fit DGB perfectly. I love love love observing your delusional egos. You know you want DGB, you know you aren’t gonna get him. If anything he goes to Ark or Oklahoma over Mizzou.
Mograyback - January 25, 2012
go chillout at the Mizzou blog troll
come back when Mizzou actually wins shit like a National Title oh wait….or a conference title oh wait….well maybe a Heisman winner….well shit what have you won?
horns1025 - January 25, 2012
interesting..
So when the article claims that ut has a chance at dgb it is egotistical.. yet when you say mu does it is perfectly in line….
HookemHouston - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Well if ESPN says it
It must be true. But “business partner ESPN” should be all for Texas, no?
Franklin’s skill set and Mizzou’s offense couldn’t fit Dorial’s talents worse, BTW. As long as he doesn’t go to Arkansas (he’s not going to OU), I am happy.
GoHornsGo90 - January 25, 2012
Listen dooshy...
I guarantee you that there’s not one person at BON that believes deep in the heart that we have a real chance of getting him but we can dream about it have columns about it and discuss it just like anyone else, right? OK, you want affirmations thrown your way, here you go: “Mizzou has a chance to get DGB, too.” and “Hey, don’t forget about Mizzou… they’re still on his list”. Are you happy now? Good, now GTFO!
spinmonkey - January 26, 2012
You don't think we have a real chance?
Managing our expectations is one thing, but I DO think we have a legitimate shot at him.
40A - January 26, 2012
Texas Ego
Texas thinking they have a shot at DGB is no different than a dude spanking it to alex morgan and thinking he has a chance to get her.
