The Texas football program is worth more than an NFL franchise. [WSJ]
The Texas Longhorns football program—just football; not basketball, baseball or anything else—is worth $805 million. To put this into perspective, the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars recently sold for about $45 million less.
Yes, that is Texas A&M's Pres. Dr. Bernie Loftin.
Thanks, Aggies! [ESPN Big 12 Blog]
Kansas State and Arkansas don't have much in common.
Outside of a top-10 ranking, the first time the Cotton Bowl has hosted such a matchup in 18 years, there's one big similarity: Neither would have been here without Texas A&M.
This can't make the Aggies faithful happy. [San Antonio Express-News]
Texas A&M tackling legend Dat Nguyen said Thursday that there is "no chance" he’ll be a part of A&M’s new staff, and already has cleaned out his locker in the Bright building.
Watch out for the newest member of the Big 12. [NewsOK]
The Big 12 wants West Virginia immediately and West Virginia wants the Big 12 immediately. The Big East wants West Virginia to stay another two years.
Big 12 defensive coordinators would support a compromise. How about West Virginia comes over as soon as Geno Smith’s eligibility is gone?
The air raid is coming, people. Be afraid, be very afraid. [Barking Carnival]
THE HOLGO AIR RAID IS COMING AND YOU ARE POWERLESS TO STOP IT.
Unless your name is Manny Diaz. If Diaz and Holgo were to face off in a WWE match, announced at midnight tonight, it would sell out at 12:01 — Appalaaaaaaaachian Moooooonshine Mullet vs Central Texas Santeriiiiiaaaaaa. Holgo’s Mountaineers dropped an atomic Geno bomb on Dabo’s boys, ripping the Ralph Lauren pony right off Clemson fans’ shirts with a 99 yard strip fumble TD OMFG play just before halftime to go up by two scores. Oh, wait. They scored again 8 seconds after then when Holgo simply nodded his head, allowing Tahj Boyd to be picked off. Make that 49 points at halftime and a three score lead. This is what Holgo can do to you, Big 12. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
They are still celebrating in West Virginia. [The Smoking Musket]
It is getting harder to win in Oklahoma. [Tulsa World]
"Everything you do with kids today is harder than it was in 2000," he said. "Getting them to go to class is harder. Getting them to not fail drug tests is harder. Getting them to not be on time is harder. Right? They've been allowed to do whatever they wanna do, a lot of them, and they either get it or they don't. Our standards on how we do things aren't going to change.
"I'm not gonna have every year Johnny, who thinks he oughta do it this way... You could do that. And that's what they were doing before we got here. They were setting their own schedules and coming in when they want to and working out to the level they want to, and they were losing all the time. We were at K-State beating 'em for a good number of years."
No, the Sooners are nowhere near in range of the Blake Era. That's not the point, Stoops' point. But the entitlement fight is real, and getting harder for him to win.
Contain your excitement. Landry Jones will be back in Norman next season. [NewsOK]

"People see the SEC different than they do any other conference. ... It’s deservingly so because they have won in the big game. But, in my opinion, from top to bottom the Big 12 was the strongest league in the country this year." - Mike Gundy on the SEC. [Washington Post]

Following the gravy train of college sports and the BCS...money.
Bowl attendance isn't very good this year. [USA Today]
Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl was the 30th of this season's 35 games, each of which also was played last season. The total attendance for those games is more than 2.5% lower this season than it was last season. If this trend holds for the remaining five games, the average bowl attendance for the season would fall to 50,542. That would be the lowest since 1978-79, when the number of games expanded to 15 from 13 and the average was 48,404. (In 2002-03, when the number of games expanded to 28 from 25, the average was 50,575.)
It pays to be a college football head coach. [The Bulletin]
Like many other coaches, Saban and Miles also have corporations and foundations that handle their media appearances and endorsements. Saban’s corporation, Sideline Inc., receives income related to "fees, royalty payments, advance payments or similar compensation" in addition to money from his endorsement deals with Coca-Cola and Ford.
Coaches can use these corporations for sophisticated tax planning that is not available to state employees who are not affiliated with similar organizations. But because a portion of their income is earned as state employees, they remain eligible for state employee benefits such as pensions, retirement savings matches, medical insurance, vacation pay and tuition waivers.
One more example of why the BCS isn't a good idea. [CBS Sports]
It wasn't the worst attempt to legitimize the BCS, but it was in the bottom 95 percent.
Go ahead, pile on: Another team or teams should have been here ... It was a Sugar Bowl matchup that would have made a heck of a Capital One Bowl ... The last time this game kicked off without a top-10 team, it was 1945 ... Twelve-thousand empty Superdome seats came out disguised as disinterest.
In a game that couldn't sell enough tickets, couldn't sell itself and -- just betting here -- couldn't generate enough ratings, Michigan beat Virginia Tech 23-20 in overtime.
More bad financial news for athletic departments. [Sports Business Journal]
The average home crowd for the 120 FBS schools in 2011 was 45,523, the lowest attendance figure since 2004. College football had enjoyed unprecedented attendance growth through the 2000s, peaking at more than 46,000 on average in 2007 and ’08. Those numbers have receded to fewer than 46,000 in the last three years, suggesting that attendance has reached a plateau.
The BCS has killed the Orange Bowl. [SB Nation]
If you want the gory attendance numbers, I have the web site for you. [Sports Media Watch]
And finally...
Good luck to Kansas State. Beat the hell out of Arkansas.

Everything that's anything . Great as usual.
enjoyed the Bryant bit.One of my friends was embroiled in the A&M saga.Bryant later admitted that how he treatedhim was a big mistake.
Looking at the financial part I would say we are not getting the bang for our buck.I see why Mack has gone over to the win now position.

Where are we?
Can’t believe we aren’t in the top 5.

It seems that article only deals with schools in national title hunt. We (hmmmm) were not.
I would bet we are at the top, or near the top, in every revenue source.
dimecoverage - January 6, 2012
Focused on the top teams this year...
however, if you notice one comment, you will get a laugh. Bama and LSU revenue come essentially from football only. The actual revenue outside of football is very low. Compare schools such as UT or OSU (Ohio State), the total revenue is MUCH higher than any SEC school and fairly balanced as well. This means that if LSU or Bama begin to slide in football, it will actually hurt the school instead of just the football program….it’s a shame that people forget college is for academics first.
STLaw - January 6, 2012
It's ranked as a ratio of football revenue to total revenue
I guess UT just brings in a hell of a lot more revenue outside of football

Anybody have any info on how our commits performed in last nite's UA All Star Game?
rmaxearnest - January 6, 2012
Only thing I've seen is that SEC commits were wonderful
rmaxearnest - January 6, 2012
Update for you...
Brewer looked shaky and was nailed twice…once by Ward and also by Edwards. He never had time to get in rhythm…a ’shirt will be good for him. He got a concussion.
Estelle and Riser looked average and should ’shirt but depth might be an issue for that…Estelle wiffed on the block on Ward that caused the Brewer concussion.
TJ was good but a good corner that will jam him can give him fits. Cayleb was injured but didn’t look bad…love his desire to go get the ball.
Norman was injured and average. Jinkens had a nice play but will benefit from a ’shirt. He is quick as hell though.
Echols was solid and has a good football IQ…he may be smaller but he can play.
MB2 and JG were the highlights. MB2 will be in the rotation immediately and looks like a man…dominated. JG looked good with a crappy OL in front of him…has good catching skills too. He was injured but it’s just a sprained ankle.
STLaw - January 6, 2012
JG
I was in a panic when I turned on the game and heard he was injured and would not return. Was scanning the tweets and posts to figure out what the injury was, but happy to learn it was only a sprained ankle. The Brewer concussion is a worry after Newton and the other Brewer concussion(s) caused them to give up football.

Entitlement
Very interesting to read in the Tulsa World article that Stoops is dealing with the same entitlement issue that Mack has been addressing. The 2% taking 90% of his time quote was a surprise. It does show the impact character has when deciding between recruits.
everything horns - January 6, 2012
This is an interesting dilemma for coaches,
Even in the same family, e.g. Brown brothers at K-State, there can be a large difference in attitude. We’ve seen this in basketball recruits as well.

I think that's a good insight into why it's better to avoid the kinds of kids who play hat games at the UA or Army game
I do have to wonder if there’s some way that guys like Nick Saban keep those types of players in line, or if they just mask it much better.
burntorangehorn - January 6, 2012
Texarkana Longhorn fan will be rooting for Arkansas because my nephew goes to school there……sorry guys. As much as I hate the SEC I still consider Arkansas Big 12 and its still a big rivalry up here even though they don’t play each other much anymore.
spakastu - January 6, 2012
I had a younger relative that played for A&M, but I still did not root for them. :-)

I can't believe you just admited to having a relative that went to Tamu.

He gave it back to me in spades, though.

Well now you can hang The final UT-ATM game score over his head…At least until we play them again.

That salmon and pear quinoa sounds pretty tasty
Might have to take a blind stab at making that later tonight. Is this a regular show for Augie? I don’t get the impression that he’s much of a culinary epicurean, although I suppose there’s documentation of his affinity for fine wine.
burntorangehorn - January 6, 2012
He hosts this show. Augie is quite the gourmand.

The Cal Blog
featured multiple recipes and cooking posts during our pre-bowl exchange. Of course a few recipes had Bevo as a main ingredient,,but it made me think. Do any of our BONers cook?
OnMySignal - January 6, 2012
I cook a fair bit
I don’t make extravagent meals as much as I used to, now that I’m cooking for one half% of the time, and the other half for myself and my two tiny girls.
Today I discovered a place nearby where I can buy real, sushi-grade big-eye, instead of that ahi (yellowfin) I’ve been making, so I’m skipping that salmon and pear quinoa. It’s been years since I’ve had seared big-eye, and it will be a ritual; a celebration of life.
burntorangehorn - January 6, 2012
Thanks for the great report, as usual, Dime ...
Re: the cooking show (Japanese cuisine) with our baseball coach, I have to say, though … what a bunch of unadulterated bullshit. I mean, do people seriously watch that? If so, we need more to do.
When you combine the inability of many Longhorn fans to see the Horns play on LHN with such progamming as the “Potty-Mouthed Baseball Coach Chef,” I think it kinda sums up some of the problems the LHN has with PR.

Dat Nguyen is easily my favorite aggie ever
That’s not a really high bar, but I always thought quite highly of the guy. One of my roommates back in college was a half-Vietnamese kid who made a special point of watching all of Dat’s games, and he was a real pleasure to follow—a rare thing for an ag. He embodied what I’ve seen as the true spirit of the Wrecking Crew, and I feel like that tradition essentially died when he graduated.
I guess the question is whether the poor performance of aggie’s defense spoke poorly of Dat’s coaching abilities. I tend to think it didn’t, as he was the inside linebackers coach, and aggie finished about 13th in the nation in rushing yards allowed per game, and tied for fifth nationally by allowing just 2.7yds/carry (for reference, LSU allowed 2.6).
If this is a case where either he or Sumlin just isn’t interested in having a holdover, or if Dat’s specialization in ILB’s doesn’t match with the defensive aligment Sumlin wants, then I would think that someone would find room for Nguyen as a full linebackers coach or even DC/co-DC at a smaller program. DeRuyter might even like having him along, but programs can only have nine assistant coaches, and Fresno State already has six hires, including four (DC/LBs coach Nick Toth, who was aggie’s OLBs coach, DBs coach and former USC/49ers star safety Tim McDonald, ST/DL coach Pete Germano, and assistant DBs coach Jordan Peterson, who was a grad. asst. at aggie) on defense. Not sure if there’d be room for an inside linebackers coach on that staff, since they still need to address the OL, WR, TE, and RB coaching positions with their remaining three openings, although new offensive assistant and recruiting coordinator Phil Earley did coach OL a long time ago.
burntorangehorn - January 6, 2012
I like his name
Sounds like Dat win
Darklust - January 6, 2012
Dat's awesome.
My favorite Aggie is Robert Earl Keen though.
The Big 12 goes on forever and the Aggies never win
UTgrad'08 - January 7, 2012
We finished 12th in the nation in run defense, which kept our defense semi-respectable this past season
Our ILBs were a weak spot on our defense, especially in pass coverage, although the play their improved when Steven Jenkins moved into the line-up. Dat did a terrific job last season with Michael Hodges, though. I think the fact that DeRuyter hired Nick Toth as his DC (not a surprise) but didn’t hire Dat is somewhat telling. I think Dat is a solid coach, but nowhere near an amazing coach.
Sumlin decided to keep Terrell Williams, our DL coach, as his one holdover assistant. I believe we’re going to let our new DC decide on the rest of his staff.
Beergut - January 8, 2012
"Bowl attendance isn't very good this year."
That’s because of the disillusionment of the BCSec SHAM-pionship game, “Rudy” Ruettiger is under investigation, Joe Namath never got to kiss Suzy, and nobody remembers the Gipper.

Sam Houston plays North Dakota for the National Championship tomorrow on ESPN,,
Noon kickoff I think. Game is being played just north of Dallas. Unlike some schools,,,Sam Houston sold out their ticket allotment within minutes of posting them. Should be a great game. Sam is undefeated this year and a National Champion from Texas would be a grand thing. Hook ’em Bearkats!!
OnMySignal - January 6, 2012

Horns Down?
Ark #45’ Alonzo Smith showed horns down upon entering the field. What does this game have to do with that? … a Texas lad sore at not being good enough to be recruited by The University. Get a life pig back, and look up the Win-Loss record of Texas vs Arkansas!

burntorangehorn - January 7, 2012
I saw that
And knew someone on here would complain about it.
Arkansas went to the Sugar Bowl last year, won the Cotton Bowl this year, and is coming off back-to-back 10 win seasons. I’m sure he is all tore up he wasn’t at texas these last two seasons.
Beergut - January 8, 2012
Interesting story about the Orange Bowl.
Now that I think about it, that bowl has lost a lot of its luster recently.
I guess Craig James might make a good politician after all. He’s 100%, completely delusional.
