[Update]: Davis told a television reporter that "Some of the players didn't seem happy down there," referring to LSU. Guess the rumors of locker room discord were true -- Wescott
In a stunning move, Torshiro Davis flipped to Texas at the last moment on National Signing Day. Texas finally gets a blue chip out of Louisiana.
Rumors began to surface late last night that 2012 Shreveport, LA DE Torshiro Davis was having second thoughts about signing with LSU. Those rumors came to a head this morning as Orangebloods.com reported that Torshiro Davis would sign with Texas. Davis made his decision just moments ago at his high school in a Signing Day to attend the University of Texas.
Most of the excitement in the Texas 2012 Class was on the offensive side of the ball. After DT Malcom Brown, the defensive class while solid, lacked some star power. Torshiro Davis is most certainly a star.
Davis is #2 ranked prospect out Louisiana is a top 100 national player. Davis' greatest strength is his lightning quick first step which could make him a terror at Texas as an edge rusher.

Texas fans can thank DL Coach Bo Davis for landing Torshiro. Coach Davis and Torshiro formed a close bond during the recruitment process. Texas was relentless in their pursuit of Davis up until last week when he told the Texas staff that he would sign with LSU. Davis reopened the lines of communication with the Texas staff after having misgivings about LSU. It must have been a difficult choice as there has been immense pressure for Davis to sign with the home state team. LSU will fail to sign the top 3 prospects from within their borders after playing for a national championship this past season. Stunning.
Davis made 2 unofficial visits to Texas and made his official visit during Banquet Weekend. Davis joins a historic Texas recruiting class that boasts 8 players that were committed to other schools, 4 out of state players and JUCOs. Unheard of in the Mack Brown era. As I tweeted earlier this week, Mack has taken the gloves off and is committed to winning now.
Davis will likely play immediately at Texas as he has the best first step on the roster and is an elite pass rusher. Hook 'Em.

Torshiro Davis' LOI in. He's officially a Longhorn.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
WAHOOO!!!
I live in Shreveport, LA…where Shiro is a big deal…let me just tell you, the local media here is shocked that he won’t be wearing the purple and gold…the day before signing day, they put out a 3 page spread in the Shreveport Times about Shiro and how great of a person he is. Along with how he will see playing time at LSU immediately (LOL!!)…so my fellow longhorns, I’m sure you all can imagine how sweet it was walking around town over the last 24 hours with my Texas polo…Mack Brown, you sir, are the man!
ACnDaHorns - February 2, 2012
Mack does it again!
UTBawse23 - February 1, 2012
I called Tosh Lupoi the best recruiter in the country last night
I sincerely apologize Coach Davis.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
no doubt he did a fine job on Torshiro
but I dont think we end up with him without a little help from LSU imploding. but, right place right time and all that jazz.
6th street - February 1, 2012
Gotta still be in it to win it, I guess
I’m a little murky on what imploding occurred at LSU. They did lose the BCS championship game to Alabama, but they nonetheless are the de facto national champions. I guess there was that thing about players not being happy, but who knows what the cause of that could be, if true?
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
This
Welcome, Angry Mack. Some of us have been waiting years for you to arrive.
windycityhorn - February 1, 2012
I believe the correct term is "Red Assed" Mack
Regardless of the terminology, Mack Brown said on the LHN last night that this class would send the message, Texas is Back.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Perspective
Citizens this is huge give the external pressure on Davis to stay at home. LSU will fail to sign the top 3 players in Louisiana since before the Saban Era. LSU is in big trouble if they can’t build a fence around their state.
Congrats to Torshiro for making the best decision for him. Welcome to 40 Acres.

So what's going on at LSU?
You’d think a team that was thisclose to a MNC would have good morale?

Haha stick around codaxx
I don’t think even the Texas coaches thought they would get Davis. Per ESPNU, the Texas coaches erupted in celebration when they received Davis’ LOI.

Simply unbelievable…our defense is gonna be all wordly for the next few years

Great, great news...thanks.
utexas87 - February 1, 2012
Huge get!
At a need position we got the second highest rated prospect in LA. Mack Brown has gone bandits. This is the first time in 15 years that Texas has had a prospect flip their commitment on NSD. I really hope we can become accustomed to it. I do believe this wa the perfect storm. Without Bo Davis, we do not land TD. Really excited for spring football

Transition on defense
Texas wants to build a SEC style defense. They made strides in 2011, but this class will help Manny Diaz’s defense take the next step.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
our DL
The quality and depth we now have on the DL now matches with most any SEC team, which is their largest area of consistent advantage IMO.
Agree?
Juan Grande - February 1, 2012
I'd agree
Size and speed are definitely a part of it also.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Brave new world . . .
Until this new staff came on board, we:
1. Would not have been in the DGB hunt until Signing Day Eve
2. Would not have worked at flipping Torsh Davis in recent weeks
3. Would have told Cottrell, Dage and Santos, “No thanks. We’re fine with who we have.”
4. Would not have gone back and worked to swing previous commits like Hawkins, Marcus Johnson and Sanders
5. Likely would have lost Ridgeway at the last minute
That about cover it?
edsp - February 1, 2012
Accurate
I also think the old staff would have stopped at 25, and not taken JUCOs.
All 8 of the flipped commitments are probably playing elsewhere under the old staff.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
By the way Bill,
good call on Santos, I know you brought him up a long while ago as a take/need for Texas. Kudos.
40A - February 1, 2012
Thank you
I always liked him better than DLT. No offense to DLT, but that’s a pretty easy evaluation.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Good analysis
kcmorse - February 1, 2012
Is that necessarily true?
As I said in our last discussion of this topic, Texas has worked on last-minute flips like Cottrell or Santos more than a few times. Tevin Mims and Will Russ were a couple of recent examples.
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
A kicker...
40A - February 1, 2012
And a defensive end
And there have been others. Those were just two examples. Point stands, no/
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
*point stands, no?
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
not very well
Don’t know if this is a flip rather than staying on a recruit. It says he came back to us after saying LSU. Also Russ just got a better offer from a better school at the last minute and Mims wasn’t that highy rated. Mack era has worked hard on top recruits to the end as evidenced by Hicks and Jeffcoat.
everything horns - February 1, 2012
Mims and Russ were very similar situations to Santos and Cottrell
I made no comparison to Davis.
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
Yeah I guess,
but not nearly as high profile, which is what I think OP meant.
40A - February 1, 2012
Where was Mims committed to? I don't remember him being committed elsewhere
just a late commitment to the Horns.
2Cor12:9 - February 1, 2012
I believe that's correct
Mims was uncommitted, he was a late bloomer. Russ was committed to Arkansas. Yawn.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Kind of like Cottrell's commitment to Oregon and Santos' to Tennessee?
I’m not sure where the argument is. The old coaching staff flipped guys at the last minute from other programs. This is not a new concept that came with the new staff.
By the way, Tevin Mims was committed to USF.
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
Correction: he committed to USF this year
But anyway, if he wasn’t committed prior to UT, that doesn’t change the fact that the old staff went from not even having offered a guy to getting him on board very late in the game, as was the case with Santos, Johnson, and Cottrell.
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
Yup
and the narrative post covering all that is now up on the main page.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 1, 2012
In home visit
Then what was the deal with the canceled in home visit? I’ll admit, I actually thought Davis wanted nothing to do with UT.
pelon7900 - February 1, 2012
It sounds like Davis sat down, thought about it, became his own man and decided for Texas
Texas seemed to be his personal favorite, but I think the external pressure kept him at LSU until now.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Judging by a few things I've read
It sounds like he was starting to change his mind before the visit was scheduled, decided he didn’t need any more information, didn’t want any more pressure from LSU, and figured that if the Texas visit was canceled then LSU would assume he was a sure thing. Not sure if the idea came from his side or the UT side. This is not the truth, just my interpretation of a few things I’ve read.
UPB13 - February 1, 2012
Did the Big Cigar or JS know of this?
kcmorse - February 1, 2012
It was completely under the radar
Davis contacted the Texas coaches mid day yesterday and told them he would sign with Texas. I bet they were pretty surprised. Davis’ head coach said again in an interview today that Torshiro and Bo Davis talk every day. They’re very tight.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
I am I in the wrong place?
Nobody mad about DGB. Nobody starting a QB fight. Is this really a Texas board? I did not think it possible to see this many happy Texas fans in one place

BurntOrangeTexans - February 1, 2012 via mobile
It appears that Tim Cole was instrumental in Torshiro's recruitment
The two played together at US Army All American Bowl. We were all watching which players were recruiting DGB, should have paid attention to Cole and Torshiro.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Wow.
Who would have saw that coming?
Are you absolutely sure the only reason he flipped was because he thought players were unhappy? Or is that his excuse to the media?
My reasoning is that it would seem that pressure to stay in-state would overwhelm the fact that players “might” be unhappy.
40A - February 1, 2012
Davis' Decision
I think he honestly decided, on his own, that Texas was the best place for him.
Additionally, Torshiro didn’t like playing LB at Army All American Bowl, he finally realized that he’s a true pass rusher and he needs play DE.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
That makes more sense.
I remember him playing LB but didn’t know he wasn’t fond of it. Thanks.
40A - February 1, 2012
I think it's safe to say
that our D and ST will win a lot of games for us next year.
Get ahead RTDB and let the D catch a little rest and we are back to 10 wins a year for the rest of the decade.

everything horns - February 1, 2012
Q for BillLT
Do you think we should have taken one more WR?
Wrangler86 - February 1, 2012
Great question
Yes and no. I think Daje can play some WR at Texas. I envision a Ramonce Taylor like role for him.
I think Texas did needed several WRs that can play immediately. I think Cayleb Jones is capable of doing that, not so sure about Sanders and Marcus Johnson playing right away. Can they do it? Yes, but ideally Johnson should probably be redshirted.
This WR corps is excellent if Mike Davis progresses, and if John Harris and Goodwin take the next step. Shipley will only get better if he’s healthy.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
M Johnson is a sure fire redshirt...
not sure about Sanders, I’m secretly hoping that Sanders or Daje switch to DB…
I see Orlando Thomas projecting as a safety so another CB would be nice…
TowerPower - February 1, 2012
I really liked TJ's talent to fill a void
We do have a need for a slot guy and not sure we got a true one. OU took about 5 or 6 WRs and just got another JUCO guy. WR is a bit of risky position in evaluating who will make it, so not sure that we aren’t selling short by not taking more guys to cover the basis.
OU took 8 def and 17 off, we took 9 off and 18 def….so it is interesting in the balance of powers. Plus or minus on some Athletes and we did take some versatile guys which is good.
Wrangler86 - February 1, 2012
I think Duke Thomas will be graduate of DBU
NFL upside. I don’t think Texas can move Daje or Sanders just yet. If Texas lands Oliver, Samples and Eldridge Massington in 2013, that would certainly change things.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Isn't there a good WR/ATH from Connor Brewer's school?
Why hasn’t he been given a look?

There’s some interested third party rumors floating around Neal.

BurntOrangeForever - February 1, 2012 via mobile
This is an example of why you have to stick to your guns and keep recruiting....
OOS studs even if things don’t seem rosy. It’s much easier to just grab what you can get in state because the OOS kids are under a lot more pressure to stay home. Just because they don’t jump at coming, like in state kids do, you can’t just give up and have any hope of having OOS success. It’s a lot of work and you’ll have a lot of misses (see DGB), but if you’re really serious about it you’ll occasionally hit the jackpot like we did and it becomes worth it.
Our past OOS efforts have been so lame and halfhearted that if the kid didn’t embrace us from the get go we just gave up and called it a lost cause. I hope we continue and even expand on this year’s OOS effort and that it wasn’t just something Mack allowed this year becasue of preestablished relationships with the new coaches.
Nunna Yo Bizness - February 1, 2012
Mack is obviously the man,
but Bo Davis was talking to TD every day from what it sounds like. Mack doesn’t regulate stuff like that does he? It seems like more of an effort thing from our new coaches. Lord knows we have the resources to recruit OOS.

Wrangler86 - February 1, 2012

BEW - February 1, 2012
Texas should continue to recruit Louisiana kids
Even if they didn’t get Torshiro, the staff should keep trying because it’s a bordering state. Many LA residents have relatives living in Texas. So most LA recruits have a Texas tie.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
bill...
Obviously we know who will start at DE next year, but who will be filling out the two deep? I’m assuming Reed will be first off the bench but who’s next, in your opinion?
TowerPower - February 1, 2012
DE 2 Deep
I think they’d like Reggie Wilson to be the 3 or 4th DE. The light bulb needs to go off. This will be his third year in the program. It’s now or likely never.
I think Ridgeway and Torshiro will play as freshman. Bluiett and Cottrell should probably redshirt. I think it would help the development of both.

Getting crushed by Alabama in the MNC might have something to do with it...

40A - February 1, 2012

Kestrel76 - February 1, 2012
Oliver
I think Texas has an excellent chance to land Oliver. Even the more cautious paysite is pretty optimistic. Oliver’s father has ties to Wyatt and Bennie Wylie. Yes his father played at TAMU.
I don’t think Texas gets Oliver early, but I think they’ll eventually land him. The only thing that worries me is a compromise school.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
He's going to Mizzou!
WR U—the compromise school!
UPB13 - February 1, 2012

billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Gustafson and Oliver
Many coaches have come by our school recently and have offered them both scholarships. Bobby Petrino was the latest to come to Jesuit and he offered Oliver and Gustafson scholarships together. Oklahoma State did as well.

billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
I don't know if he's better, but...
Texas really needs a pass rushing DE. That’s what Torshiro is. There is a lot of talk that MEJr may become a DT, which is a position of strength for UT. So MEJr may (or may not) be better, but Torshiro is more necessary.

Wow, just compare this to seasons past.
With the exception of Jeffcoat/Hicks two years ago, I really don’t recall us having this many commits after, like, September!
pleaseplaykindle - February 1, 2012
10 after November is extremely abnormal at Texas
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Guess he redefined "Mr. February."
Nice to see a much more aggressive recruiting staff. Wouldn’t call it “entitled” but in the past we didn’t put near as much effort into the current class this time of the year. It’s a good signal for the public to see. Not afraid to lose a few battles.
Dustin Brockelman - February 1, 2012
Usually that's because they're all wrapped up about nine months earlier
Not complaining!
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
Wow I just realized the 8 out of the final 9 commitments were all flipped
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
It's like,
all of a sudden our staff has more confidence in our ridiculously awesome program later in the recruiting cycle this year.
40A - February 1, 2012
Almost 10% of the top 100 players in America will play for UT next year.
according to espn. Yet… we are no. 3.
Dustin Brockelman - February 1, 2012
I believe Alabama has 13 players in the ESPNU150, Texas has 12, FSU has 9
Yeah I don’t get recruiting ranking either.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Cant get quite that picky
Top 3 in every service. That is elite talent. The difference is subjectivity and preference.
Elite talent? Check
Filled needs? Check
Spread over all positions? check
Good Kids? Check
Good day.
SwimTexas - February 1, 2012
I've never really followed recruiting before,
but do the rankings really matter? I keep seeing a lot of comments about them and am no quite sure how it all works.
Thanks
SDG - February 1, 2012
I think individual player rankings matter, but I don't understand team recruiting rankings
Texas has 22 4 stars in this class per 247 Sports, but they’re still ranked #2 in team rankings.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
Team rankings are less important.
Individual Rankings are proven (those by Rivals more than the rest) to be good indicators of future success and NFL talent.
Dustin Brockelman - February 1, 2012
wonder how OU did recruiting this year
horns1025 - February 1, 2012 via mobile
little off topic
but Big 10 just passed a rule to allow 4 yr scholarships. I wonder if that will help them recruit next yr. I really wish the Big 12 would follow suite
codaxx - February 1, 2012
I think Big Ten did to counter SEC oversigning
The SEC found their edge and now the Big Ten has a counter punch.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
I like it
I really wanted Big 12 to do it. Sit in a living room and say “our scholarship offer is for 4 yrs, you go to the SEC and it is only 1”. Powerful tool when talking to mom and dad
codaxx - February 1, 2012
Not a fan
I know you have strong feelings on this, so I’ll just leave it at that.
billfromlaketravis - February 1, 2012
me either
WestTxHornFan - February 1, 2012
doesnt change much
players can be dismissed for academics or discipline. Also it is not mandatory. So you do not have to offer 4 yrs, but you can if you feel the desire.
codaxx - February 1, 2012
you can offer a 1, 2, 3, or 4
but if you start giving out 4’s every Tom Dick and Harry will want one
TowerPower - February 1, 2012
BILL
I just want to thank you and the BON staff for all your work over this period. Now please go have a sizable drink get some rest.
codaxx - February 1, 2012
No time for that!
Offseason workouts in full swing!
Are those DT’s bench pressing 400 yet?
Does Shipley and his bum knee still make him walk in circles?
Is Brown & Bergeron preparing to take on a new partner?
Can Case McCoy complete a 10 yard pass without scrambling from a clean pocket?
Has anyone kneecapped Goodwin yet to keep him from the Olympics?
Has Mike Davis actually made up his mind?
Questions need answers BON!
Dustin Brockelman - February 1, 2012
Coach Bo Davis
Manny Diaz gets the attention (well deserved), but Coach Davis has quietly coached and recruited up a storm since arriving in Austin.
Think back on the defensive line play against Rice and BYU, then compare that to the A&M and Cal games (what Baylor game?) Real progression there.
And then he goes and hauls in a recruit like this. Outstanding work.
beast in bama - February 1, 2012
Giles, as always, deserves a lot of credit for terrific DE play
burntorangehorn - February 1, 2012
Yet another unsung hero of this staff
He’s practically a given, year in, year out.
Davis took a perceived liability (DTs) and turned it into a strength – with depth!!
