I live in Shreveport, LA…where Shiro is a big deal…let me just tell you, the local media here is shocked that he won’t be wearing the purple and gold…the day before signing day, they put out a 3 page spread in the Shreveport Times about Shiro and how great of a person he is. Along with how he will see playing time at LSU immediately (LOL!!)…so my fellow longhorns, I’m sure you all can imagine how sweet it was walking around town over the last 24 hours with my Texas polo…Mack Brown, you sir, are the man!

I’m a little murky on what imploding occurred at LSU. They did lose the BCS championship game to Alabama, but they nonetheless are the de facto national champions. I guess there was that thing about players not being happy, but who knows what the cause of that could be, if true?

Citizens this is huge give the external pressure on Davis to stay at home. LSU will fail to sign the top 3 players in Louisiana since before the Saban Era. LSU is in big trouble if they can’t build a fence around their state.

At a need position we got the second highest rated prospect in LA. Mack Brown has gone bandits. This is the first time in 15 years that Texas has had a prospect flip their commitment on NSD. I really hope we can become accustomed to it. I do believe this wa the perfect storm. Without Bo Davis, we do not land TD. Really excited for spring football

1. Would not have been in the DGB hunt until Signing Day Eve
2. Would not have worked at flipping Torsh Davis in recent weeks
3. Would have told Cottrell, Dage and Santos, “No thanks. We’re fine with who we have.”
4. Would not have gone back and worked to swing previous commits like Hawkins, Marcus Johnson and Sanders
5. Likely would have lost Ridgeway at the last minute

Don’t know if this is a flip rather than staying on a recruit. It says he came back to us after saying LSU. Also Russ just got a better offer from a better school at the last minute and Mims wasn’t that highy rated. Mack era has worked hard on top recruits to the end as evidenced by Hicks and Jeffcoat.

Mims and Russ were very similar situations to Santos and Cottrell

Mims was uncommitted, he was a late bloomer. Russ was committed to Arkansas. Yawn.

I’m not sure where the argument is. The old coaching staff flipped guys at the last minute from other programs. This is not a new concept that came with the new staff.

By the way, Tevin Mims was committed to USF.

Correction: he committed to USF this year

But anyway, if he wasn’t committed prior to UT, that doesn’t change the fact that the old staff went from not even having offered a guy to getting him on board very late in the game, as was the case with Santos, Johnson, and Cottrell.

It sounds like Davis sat down, thought about it, became his own man and decided for Texas

Texas seemed to be his personal favorite, but I think the external pressure kept him at LSU until now.

Judging by a few things I've read

It sounds like he was starting to change his mind before the visit was scheduled, decided he didn’t need any more information, didn’t want any more pressure from LSU, and figured that if the Texas visit was canceled then LSU would assume he was a sure thing. Not sure if the idea came from his side or the UT side. This is not the truth, just my interpretation of a few things I’ve read.

Davis contacted the Texas coaches mid day yesterday and told them he would sign with Texas. I bet they were pretty surprised. Davis’ head coach said again in an interview today that Torshiro and Bo Davis talk every day. They’re very tight.

It appears that Tim Cole was instrumental in Torshiro's recruitment

The two played together at US Army All American Bowl. We were all watching which players were recruiting DGB, should have paid attention to Cole and Torshiro.

Who would have saw that coming?

Are you absolutely sure the only reason he flipped was because he thought players were unhappy? Or is that his excuse to the media?

My reasoning is that it would seem that pressure to stay in-state would overwhelm the fact that players “might” be unhappy.

Davis' Decision

I think he honestly decided, on his own, that Texas was the best place for him.

Additionally, Torshiro didn’t like playing LB at Army All American Bowl, he finally realized that he’s a true pass rusher and he needs play DE.

That makes more sense.

I remember him playing LB but didn’t know he wasn’t fond of it. Thanks.

Great question

Yes and no. I think Daje can play some WR at Texas. I envision a Ramonce Taylor like role for him.

I think Texas did needed several WRs that can play immediately. I think Cayleb Jones is capable of doing that, not so sure about Sanders and Marcus Johnson playing right away. Can they do it? Yes, but ideally Johnson should probably be redshirted.

This WR corps is excellent if Mike Davis progresses, and if John Harris and Goodwin take the next step. Shipley will only get better if he’s healthy.

M Johnson is a sure fire redshirt...

not sure about Sanders, I’m secretly hoping that Sanders or Daje switch to DB…

I see Orlando Thomas projecting as a safety so another CB would be nice…

I really liked TJ's talent to fill a void

We do have a need for a slot guy and not sure we got a true one. OU took about 5 or 6 WRs and just got another JUCO guy. WR is a bit of risky position in evaluating who will make it, so not sure that we aren’t selling short by not taking more guys to cover the basis.
OU took 8 def and 17 off, we took 9 off and 18 def….so it is interesting in the balance of powers. Plus or minus on some Athletes and we did take some versatile guys which is good.

I think Duke Thomas will be graduate of DBU

NFL upside. I don’t think Texas can move Daje or Sanders just yet. If Texas lands Oliver, Samples and Eldridge Massington in 2013, that would certainly change things.

This is an example of why you have to stick to your guns and keep recruiting....

OOS studs even if things don’t seem rosy. It’s much easier to just grab what you can get in state because the OOS kids are under a lot more pressure to stay home. Just because they don’t jump at coming, like in state kids do, you can’t just give up and have any hope of having OOS success. It’s a lot of work and you’ll have a lot of misses (see DGB), but if you’re really serious about it you’ll occasionally hit the jackpot like we did and it becomes worth it.

Our past OOS efforts have been so lame and halfhearted that if the kid didn’t embrace us from the get go we just gave up and called it a lost cause. I hope we continue and even expand on this year’s OOS effort and that it wasn’t just something Mack allowed this year becasue of preestablished relationships with the new coaches.

Mack is obviously the man,

but Bo Davis was talking to TD every day from what it sounds like. Mack doesn’t regulate stuff like that does he? It seems like more of an effort thing from our new coaches. Lord knows we have the resources to recruit OOS.

Texas should continue to recruit Louisiana kids

Even if they didn’t get Torshiro, the staff should keep trying because it’s a bordering state. Many LA residents have relatives living in Texas. So most LA recruits have a Texas tie.

I think they’d like Reggie Wilson to be the 3 or 4th DE. The light bulb needs to go off. This will be his third year in the program. It’s now or likely never.

I think Ridgeway and Torshiro will play as freshman. Bluiett and Cottrell should probably redshirt. I think it would help the development of both.

Getting crushed by Alabama in the MNC might have something to do with it...

I think Texas has an excellent chance to land Oliver. Even the more cautious paysite is pretty optimistic. Oliver’s father has ties to Wyatt and Bennie Wylie. Yes his father played at TAMU.

I don’t think Texas gets Oliver early, but I think they’ll eventually land him. The only thing that worries me is a compromise school.

Oliver’s brother is at OU. Arkansas is considered a dark horse. That being said Oliver is an in state kid who really likes Texas.

Texas really needs a pass rushing DE. That’s what Torshiro is. There is a lot of talk that MEJr may become a DT, which is a position of strength for UT. So MEJr may (or may not) be better, but Torshiro is more necessary.

With the exception of Jeffcoat/Hicks two years ago, I really don’t recall us having this many commits after, like, September!

Nice to see a much more aggressive recruiting staff. Wouldn’t call it “entitled” but in the past we didn’t put near as much effort into the current class this time of the year. It’s a good signal for the public to see. Not afraid to lose a few battles.

I think individual player rankings matter, but I don't understand team recruiting rankings

Texas has 22 4 stars in this class per 247 Sports, but they’re still ranked #2 in team rankings.

Team rankings are less important.

Individual Rankings are proven (those by Rivals more than the rest) to be good indicators of future success and NFL talent.

players can be dismissed for academics or discipline. Also it is not mandatory. So you do not have to offer 4 yrs, but you can if you feel the desire.

Manny Diaz gets the attention (well deserved), but Coach Davis has quietly coached and recruited up a storm since arriving in Austin.

Think back on the defensive line play against Rice and BYU, then compare that to the A&M and Cal games (what Baylor game?) Real progression there.

And then he goes and hauls in a recruit like this. Outstanding work.
