Sundays with Bill, Blue Chip Wave Edition

Texas was busy this week. After not landing a single commitment at the First Junior Day Texas got on a roll landing Jake Oliver, A'Shawn Robinson, Tyrone Swoopes and Kyle Hicks in consecutive days. All 4 were Texas' top targets at their respected positions. Texas is far from slowing down. RSJ is expected to commit to the Horns on Wednesday afternoon.
Talking points:
* Texas ends the QB debate, and signs Tyrone Swoopes. Huge get, but is the staff done at the position? J.T. Barrett is expected to be at JD2.
* A'Shawn Robinson pulls the shocker and commits to Texas early.
* Jake Oliver picks Texas. Darrell Wyatt is cashing in.
* Kyle Hicks went from a possible DB evaluation to a Texas' top RB target. How did the fast rising junior get here?
* The Second Junior Day looms large. Favorites for offers, Bill's Guys. I have an updated list.
* The County Fair is in swing. I'll share my thoughts. Spring ball begins February 28th.
"Theo:"So Kareem rebounds, right? Feeds Worthy on the break, over to A.C., to Magic, then back to Worthy! Right? "
[Karl shoots and kills the desk guard with a perfectly timed aim]
Oh that Theo.
Fire away Citizens.

Lots of WRs...

If RSJ is a Horn on Wed, do you think any of them will get offers?

Track meet and baseball tourney? Does that mean they were invited but won’t show?

They might show

I think Texas is probably down at WR going into JD2. Massington is the best out of the JD2 group.

Not sure if this is right but...

I have DB Will Barrows on my list for some reason…

I don't believe Barrows has been invited at this time
Wylie East has TWO WR's?
Yeah Quan Jones and Marcell Ateman
Is their QB college material?
Most likely to be offered

Likely: Barrett, Gustafson, Porter, Hall, Miles, Maurice Smith, Jacorey Warrick, Deoundrei Davis, Mitchell

Locks: Prevot and Perkins.

Gustafson

Heard from close teammate that Gustafson will be committing to TAMU within the week

If so, Porter will get offered
His comments

on Texas weren’t too encouraging. Perhaps we can change his mind with the visit…

So kids just don't like Texas

Thankfully they’re aren’t many of them.

Yeah

I think I remember him reading that it sounded like Texas had already made up their mind with Kent Perkins, so he wasn’t sure about his status, etc. etc.

That's funny

because right now it’s really good to be a Longhorn

Not to get political

But that’s where I do the Bill Clinton approach and focus a little more on that guy if he’s really that good

I hope you are wrong about Gustafson - Texas needs him.
perkins

UT needs Perkins. Gustafson would be a great slice of pie after the meal.

Aaaaand

He’s committed to TAMU now

no RBs...

…so it seems its Wilson or bust?

Did you not see that

Kyle Hicks committed yesterday?

Think he was referring to the JD2 Invite List
bingo!

yes, I saw hick’s commitment, I was commenting on the JD2 invitations Bill posted.

Tweet from Recruitocosm

“Hearing an elite prospect (mid 4 star) is looking to walk-on at Texas. Kid plays a need position. More to come in the Humidor tomorrow.”

Any idea who this is?

saw that as well...

is he talking about this year or next year?

Very interesting

Hmm, maybe a quarterback, WR, or OL. Those are the only need positions.

wait a sec... if he is a 4* looking to walk on for next year...

it should be pretty easy to find out who has not signed on the dotted line…

Maybe David Robinson's son?

He’s a wideout right? And was seen visiting recently.

The Little Admiral?
Hmmmm

David Robinson was seen at the UT vs. KSU game at the Drum. Coincidence, I think not.

No coincidence

Other son is already at Texas (which does help I suppose)

I did not know that

cool.

kids a legit WR...

would be a nice surprise if so

He can definitely afford to pay

It would be nice to get a starter without using a ’ship.

Probably better options out there right now, but you have to like those genes
one of those you take him on his own dime

why not.. he is just one more “prefered walk on”,,,

Which gets me to an odd NCAA question… If the kid plays for the team and his father is a multimillionaire… what keeps him from buying stuff for his friends? Would that be an NCAA violation?

I think Robinson will get scholarship offers
I agree he will get offers

but none are from where his brother is currently enrolled.. he is a guy you take because his talent, but only if he doesn’t count this year because of the scholarship #’s

I don't see how anyone could get nailed for that.
Happened at USC with Leinart and Dwayne Jarrett

Jarrett was not paying his fair share of rent, according to the NCAA, for the place he and Leinart were living in. NCAA nailed USC because Matt Leinart (rather his dad) picked up the tab.

Wow!

That is really surprising to me. Thanks for educating me on that one.

When Boise is getting popped for letting recruits sleep on coaches

You know just about everything is impermissible.

Lol

That’s pretty funny.

Yeah

Also remember the pic of Leinart and Jarrett at a LA hotspot. Both had drinks in their hands. Only one was 21.

How do the current UT and A&M classes stack up?

How many of the A&M guys slip in the rankings or decommit?

It'll be interesting when they get into the meat of the SEC schedule

I don’t think they’ll win many conference games with an unproven QB, a young team, and serious depth problems upfront.

I think a few guys are using A&M as placeholders

I think Wilson is gone as soon as LSU offers

Dumb question, but here goes...

What is the purpose for “place holding” by a recruit?

some commit to one school to try and force an offer from another school

Lets also not forget that if a kid really really wants to go to school “X” and holds out the entire time for school “X” and they never offer, he has no place to land. Kids will find a placeholder that they consider as a fall back option…

Insurance and/or leverage...Got it! Thanks.
Committing early is smart to a school like Texas

If you get hurt while you are playing your senior year you know that the Longhorn family will take care of you and get you a medical schollie. Maybe that is why Mack doesn’t allow being the placeholder (if a kid takes a visit without permission he is pretty much off the list).

I always liked Mac's position on that.
I wonder if A&M will try to follow suit?

They are loading up this JR day.. If a kid starts to look elsewhere do they pull his scholly offer? If so, I will pay for screen shots of the TexAgs spin…

+1
It would be freaking priceless if Sumlin decides to follow the Mack

principles of recruiting… The spin over there might knock the earth off its axis though..

Hey Bill

How does the conversation with Barrett, Thomas, and Hill go? What will the coaches be telling these guys?

QBs

There’s some noise out there that Barrett will still be offered. I’m not sure how it would work, but Texas needs to be up front and honest with every party involved. No internet surprises.

not Barret

If UT is gonna offer another QB, it should be Cody Thomas. No point in offering another dual-threat QB like Barrett or even Kenny Hill if UT has already offered Swoopes and Jalen Overstreet is already coming in (and possibly red-shirting).

Overstreet...

was a really good safety too…if he gets frustrated at the QB depth I’m sure Akina would love to have him…

Overstreet projects better as an OLB
true.....

Funny, all the posters from East Texas on OB think Overstreet is UT’s QB1 of the future. While everyone else has the same opinion as you.

Oh I think he can be a QB at Texas

The offense would look very different, but Overstreet can play QB. I think he’s a football player, they’ll figure out the position later.

Cody Thomas

Thomas’ father basically told Inside Texas that they didn’t feel Texas’ interest in Cody was very serious. I think he’s out. Kenny Hill has plenty of options. I think it’s Barrett or bust on another QB.

I know....

I would still push hard for Thomas, he’s too good.

Cody Thomas

His dad has already said he isn’t coming to Texas so he’s not in the discussion anymore.

Coaches are gonna be up late a couple of nights

if all those listed for JD2 make it to town. Could choose up sides and have 3-4 touch football teams.

I'm sure the coaches are putting in serious hours on the evaluations

No stone unturned.

Tell me about A'Shawn Robinson...

any info on why the early commit? Does he RS? What type of player is he? Spill the beans brother…

Robinson

The issue with him is playing 100% all the time. When Robinson is motivated, he might be the best player in the state. When he’s not playing with fire, he’s been average.

I think he projects better as an OT. Elite, elite wingspan, good punch. He can be an excellent DT.

LB Position

Still seems like Hughes is the top target here… if Hughes is offered, is there not a spot for Wade? Heard we may just be taking 1 LB which is why I ask. Especially given our depth at MLB with Edmond and Santos, curious to know if Wade would be a bit redundant even though he’s extremely talented

Bill, I'm curious about your thoughts on Wade, too.
Wade is a tough one

I just don’t see where the offer is. Texas is deep at MLB with Edmond and Santos, and Tevin Jackson can also play there.

Wade is a take most years, but this year could be different.

I would like to see Jackson move there full time
Jackson has been destroying the off season work outs.
Great to hear.

Was a 5* LB out of high school.

Speaking of workouts - name some names

Who is being called out?

Jesus at IT won't say

I don’t think those names will get out. Some things are just meant to stay in-house.

Jesus did make what I found a VERY TELLING

comment about Garrett Greenlea on Friday. Asked if Greenlea was responding to Wylie/Searles, Jesus said, “This is a very important offseason for Greenlea.” My hope for him contributing continues to dwindle, and this non-comment was enlightening.

Malcolm Brown, Edmond, and Moore are all getting pushed to get their body fat % down
I would love to spend one summer with Bennie

He would likely kill me…but I heard he can resurrect and rebuild you, apparently Texas has the technology….wah nah nah nah nah nah. =D

I should have included Hollins in the likely offer list

I think Mitchell or D. Davis should be the top target at LB. Hughes is a raw, elite athlete, but I like Mitchell and D. Davis better. Hughes is worth an offer, but I think he can be slow played.

Bill, whats the latest at the county fair?
The time didn't respond very well one year, Wylie went off on the team

A correction was made. Hawkins and Moore are looking like starters. Bennie is working on reducing Moore, and Edmond’s body fat. Wylie is pushing Malcolm Brown very hard.

from what I've read in drills

Hawkins is at LT while Cochran is at RT. Don’t know if it stays like that.

Always suspected that would happen

Righty QB, your best tackle is on the left (blind) side . . . actually, I was hoping Hawkins was good enough to make that happen.

not the worst thing in the world

if your juco transfer OT takes the LT job and runs with it.

Hawkins is a better athlete

Cochran will be a good player at Texas.

Really good to hear Hawkins getting starter consideration.

We really need him there.

I'd be surprised if he didn't start
Which MB?
Is better?
This one
Wylie is pushing Malcolm Brown very hard.
The running back, Malcom Brown hasn't enrolled yet
Really? I don't why I thought he enrolled early

Which then brings up a concern about MB, the running back. Why is he being pushed – what is wrong with him?

Some bad weight

He needs to be a work horse. His body must be in peak physical position for that to happen.

Ah, well here is hoping he is responding to Wylie

Both MB and Bergeron have to do better , in D1 football, than just playing in two games and then laying off from injuries!

Honestly I think Bergeron has the better frame to be the horse
as stated earlier in thread

The Assett of JS says he’s freakin’ jacked.

I think Bergeron has been jacked since 6th grade
Not knocking Bergeron, but MB was supposed to be the heir apparant to Peterson, when he was recrutied.

I didn;t see evidence of this last year, however and that is troubling.

It's tough to be heir apparent

when your getting tackled in the backfield as soon as you take the handoff.

you're*
OH, no doubt.

But he had a troubling habit of running high and his cuts were a little slow to me.

Looked good to me

He was a freshman and always fought for extra yardage

Disagree man, totally.

Go re-watch the UCLA game film (when he was healthy). Dude made some vicious cuts that game, and his vision is good enough that he usually didn’t even need to.

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again: MB picks up four yards in his sleep.

When is the County Fair I'm new to Texas
It's a segment of the off season work outs
Thank U

I was about to text the Mrs. to take the day off

Welcome to Texas. nt.
Thanks Bro Namath

It’s great to be here

If this is the Blue Chips edition of SWB

Where is Shaq and Penny Hardaway?

I'm more of a Ricky Roe man
Kyle Hicks

How long had the coaches been evaluating him and how did he wind up from off the radar to the first RB commit? Can you tell us a little bit more on his story (knowing he was at CB last year, switched to RB this year).

I thought his film on Hudl was okay, but then I watched the free video clip they had on Orangebloods and it was very impressive… recommended for those who haven’t seen it yet!

PS Bill – kudos to you for identifying his talent 8 months ago.

Hicks

I saw a special player at the Red Bull Tourney in July 2011, I just had no idea what position he would play.

Hicks stayed at RB almost exclusively at Martin and had a great junior season. 1600 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, 28 total touchdowns.

He came on late. Ford is looking hard at OOS schools. The staff likes Hicks better than White, they went with Hicks.

Malcolm Brown's turf toe

A little off topic, but any insight into how his recovery is going? I understand that this can be a chronic, nagging injury and just hope it’s not hampering him as we go into spring ball… or worse, having it get reinjured.

Asked Jesus on IT about Brown and Bergeron

During their Q and A on Friday. He told us the Asset said Bergeron was freakin’ jacked and Brown was carrying some bad weight but it was starting to come off.

I'm guessing the bad weight came from sitting around resting the injury
Bergeron

I really wouldn’t be surprised if he overtakes Brown… I absolutely love his game. Just a beast and a really difficult back to take down.

I hope he gets right. Period

Even if it requires a minor surgery. Get it done now. I think he’ll be 100% for spring ball.

James White commits to TAMU

Marks their 11th commitment of the 2013 class. They’re off to a hot start.

I like their class, but there are some reaches in there

Might be a smart solution to take a lot now, decommitments are coming. They always do at TAMU.

It's not how U start it's how U finish
Any guesses on whether we go for a K or P this year?

I know it is early, but I am a fan of always looking for one K or P every class…

On paper, Russ is the punter and Pruitt or Jordan is the kicker

Hopefully Nick Rose can handle the kick offs.

Being reported that Kenny Hill will not make it to JD2
I used to love watching his show on HBO

with that crazy music.

Hill is a pretty serious baseball player, not surprising
JT Barrett will attend JD2
Now it get interesting

I don’t Texas brings him for kind words. Just sayin.’

ummm... hypothetical..

if Swoopes and Barret both commit….

What do you do? RS both? develop a 2 QB package?

Haha...

We would be having some epic QB arguments down the road… Ash vs. McCoy vs. Brewer vs. Overstreet vs. Swoopes vs. Barret…..

BON would implode
would be worth it...

screw a old fashion T backfield set…

Just do it with Brewer flanked by Overstreet and Swoopes..

Put Oliver and RSJ on one side and Gray out wide on the other…

and they play ball…

forgot about a certain #8!..
Hey What Starts Here Changes The World! Right
Odds of him committing?

If he does receive an offer, what are our chances? I can’t see him committing with Swoopes and Brewer in the fold, but I’ve heard the staff is trying to find a way to take both JT and Tyrone… really curious about this.

The common sentiment was that Barrett would commit to Texas on the spot

This was months ago, before Swoopes committed.

Just my opinion,

but I think we need to get all the capable QBs in as possible. Good competition only makes players better, and we don’t have the luxury anymore of pinning our hopes on just one QB.

I'd be suprised if Barrett committed now that we have Swoopes.
Then why

would he be coming in for JD2 if he has already decided not to come here?

on the subject of how other teams in the state are recruiting

you think Texas will once again reel in the best recruiting class in the state?

I don't have any doubt that they will

White, Wilson, Griffin and Stewart are the only 4 that I really like. Texas will be fine.

if you had your pick of any recruit in the nation

that Texas could have who would it be?

Robert Nkemdiche. Guy is a monster.
+1

I think he was grown in a lab… absolute freak

Robert Nkemdiche

Without question. He would have been the top recruit in the 2012 class, easily the top recruit in the 2013 class. Beast from Georgia. Texas is recruiting him, but he is widely considered a Bama lock.

if you could have any Offensive Line recruit in the nation who would it be?

and would you say Texas has a shot?

Laremy Tunsil is the top ranked OT in the country

Texas has shown some interest. He’s out of Florida.

Reuben Foster/Bama commit

Might be just as good.

i like the rueben LB that commited to bama

hes a monster! one of the best highlight films ive seen from the linebacker position. Him and landon collins on defense is scary.

That's a very physical, fast defense

Should Texas get to another national championship game, I hope Bama isn’t on the other sideline.

Isn't there a very good chance that Kohl Stewart plays baseball instead?

I can’t remember if it was him or someone else, or both, that have a very high chance of being drafted by the MLB.

probably a top 50 kid right now if not better.. Was that this winter I thought

will ask around and see how high his stock is now

Yep, I think he gets offered serious money to keep him away from football
Didn't OU have a kid like that last year?
I can't remember if they did

Nebraska lost Bubba Starling to baseball.

Archie Bradley

Archie Bradley was the guy. He was drafted 7th overall by the diamondbacks

Nice pull
I knew there was one recently

The interesting thing will be that since the MLB has changed their slotting rules and the 2 spot athlete clause that more kids might just go to college..

Yes, the salary scale has been reworked
Yep,

Bradley was gonna walk on to the OU football team and play on scholly for the baseball team. Dude was an absolute stud on the football field too, I’m glad the Diamondbacks took him.

Stewart is a leftie and throws in the mid 90s

Kids like that have a tendency to get offered LIFE CHANGING money. I know Stewart is saying all the right things, but things could change once he’s offered a MLB signing bonus. There’s a reason TAMU isn’t down recruiting QBs.

Yeah....

he’s gone.

He could see max signing bonus money
Didn't realize Stewart is a lefty

Doubt he’ll never play a down of college football (or an inning of college baseball).

Isaiah Golden?

Most everything I’ve heard is he’s right up there with A’Shawn Robinson (possibly better) and only a small step behind Justin Manning.

Any idea on what the state wide perception is of Neb, Col and Mizzou continuing to recruit in Texas?

and do you expect the blow back on TCU to be this recruiting cycle

TCU

I think the Frogs problems helps Tech, Arkansas,OSU, and possibly U of H and SMU.

TCU was right there at the edge of something special. It’s a shame.

BLFT

Love this weekly feature, by far one of my favorites each week. But I have to be honest…and I don’t know if its been addressed before, but the Center Alignment thingy kills me. :)

Haha, I think it formats like that on the chat feature
Why do you think A&M is off to such a fast start?

They have 3 or so top 100 guys..Do we have a chance at those guys especially that toprated tall WR?

Grades issues from what I've heard.
why dont we show A&M's commits a book of A&M football history

that’ll make anyone decommit

Or just email them a link

to aggietraditions.tamu.edu

TAMU

This always happens with a new staff. Hey kids, a new sheriff is town. We’re here to win. All that nonsense. They’ll have serious decommitment problems once they drop 3-4 in a row in the SEC. Don’t worry.

Sumlin hasn’t traditionally been an elite recruiter. He did do a nice job putting together his staff.

I am shocked that those guys committed early

But it may be just placholding liker earlier posters said. I mean, who really cares if you burn a bridge on A&M? It isn’t considered that strange to ditch them if you get LSU or Bama offer.

Ish Wilson is the only shocking commitment in my mind
Fast start

A&M also has a much easier depth chart if that is what a recruit is after and like Bill says, the new sheriff in town always has a little momentum since he is new.

I think Texas will stay away from Griffin, they like RSJ better
Tall Recievers

This appears to be – I really don’t love speaking in declaratives this far out from NSD) the deepest class of WRs in Texas in a long time, particularly WRs with height, and we already have our staff’s pick for the best one. Hopefully on Wed we get a possible second. This was A&M’s year to get one also. Good for them.

Golden at DT is a different story. If we can flip him by NSD I am all for it.

2010 was a pretty deep one

Texas got Darius White, Mike Davis, Darius Terrell, Chris Jones, and John Harris, but other four-star guys like Apo, DeAndrew White, and Terrell Reese went out of state. In total, 21 of the Rivals’ top 100 receivers for the year were Texas high school products. Wow.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/byu/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-2393

Also, guys like Josh Huff, Bryant Jackson, and many others switched to WR

Quite a WR class for the state that year.

Should have said

“one of” the deepest classes in a long time. Because you are right about 2010.

Although, this helps prove my point about the WR position. Malcolm Williams, Darius White, Terrell, Timmons, etc, etc…. A combination of reasons, but just a lot of misses. Reminds me of DT from 2008-2010 where it just seemed we could not make a DT work.

Hopefully both of these trends are over now.

Yeah, it's definitely a good illustration of the point that recruits are just recruits

It’s arguable which out of Mike Davis, Ross Apo, and Josh Huff has been the best receiver of that bunch of four-star guys, but that’s not saying a whole lot. I think a recent OL class was similar in that regard.

Was really hoping we could really get a prospect from the State I left behind at this next junior day

CALIFORNIA

Fuck this game out sounding drunk
Cravens could visit this summer
LonghornScott has a new post on Barking Carnival

If people haven’t seen it yet. On offense with Swoopes not really changing from offense with Ash or Brewer. Good read and visuals.

One of the best in the business
RSJ? Thought he'd be in burnt orange by now

Why the wait now that Swoopes is committed?

My guess

Wanted to give the other guys the spotlight on their days… Let’s hope he commits before basketball playoffs start on Tuesday, I think.

OB reporting that an announcement is set for Wednesday, 1 pm i think
I agree

RSJ wants to commit on his own time. 130 pm Wenesday.

so he's pretty much a lock?
I do feel that RSJ is a lock
So far it seems like nobody wants to steal the spotlight from 1 another
I read somewhere that RSJ wanted to play basketball as well

Any truth to this?

Any word on latest attrition numbers?

Seems like there’s some rumors that the numbers will go up.

I haven't heard that

I do think several non contributors will have transfer talks with the staff.

Bill what's our cieling looking like 18 give or take

20 TOPS

Sounds about right

I think the number is currently 15 -18, that could change.

Bill, Big XII vs SEC recruiting...

What changes are there for Misery and Little Brother in recruiting for the SEC that they couldn’t do in the Bix XII? Each conference has a different set of written requirements, right?

Right

SEC has a minimum wage requirement, while the Big XII does not.

Most recruiting rules are consistent across the NCAA

They are ignored more often in the SEC.

Some changed, like the SEC changed their standards to the NCAA minimum for Jerrell Powe

Prior to that they had a higher academic/admissions standard, like most AQ conferences do. The commissioner announced that the SEC’s standards would mirror the NCAA’s.

Would really love to see Texas try to nail 3-4 OOS kids a yr
I think that's a lot more likely than most people think

Probably doesn’t happy in 2013 because of the numbers, but I think that will be the new normal.

Predictions on commitments between now and next week?

Also, on the lines of county fair, any news on how the rest of the OL/DL/Davis is doing?

Predictions

I actually think Samples could commit before RSJ. I think Perkins commits in a couple weeks. I though Prevot would be in the same boat, but Texas is also looking at Hall. I think JD2 decides who gets the offer.

The other outstanding offers will take their time.

Cochran and Moore are doing very well. So well I think that Mack might be sold on JUCOs if they fit in well. I’ve heard Hopkins was playing center. Moore, Dorsey, Jeffcoat and Oak are my starting 4 at DL.

Mack looking at JUCOs is smart

He has always placed an undue burden on himself by not getting the best available at a spot of need. Tons of great players on the JUCO train. And, most of them know that they already are getting their second chance.

I think they continue to look at JUCOs for immediate needs
why not?

nothing wrong with cherry picking the best Jucos that still fit your University profile.

Augie has quietly taken JUCOs for years

No reason for Mack not to do the same.

I might ruffle some feathers

But I am hyped for the Spring Orange vs. White game on LHN. It’s on a Sunday so I can just sit there and ingest this goodness. I imagine they will show it 100 times and plan on watching it every time.

Hopefully it'll be on ESPN, I liked their campus tour last year
me too....

I love the LHN

Walk-on

Do have any information on who the possible walk-on could be? Recruitocosm tweeted that a mid 4 star prospect might walk-on.

I read that

I suspect we won’t get any information until the Inside the Humidor report comes out.

on that Bill

I’m torn. I bought a subscription to IT because of JS and EN. It has the disclaimer that you shouldn’t share the info received there with other sites. But I feel much more loyalty to this site then that one. I’m big on following the rules, but you guys should know this stuff as well Oh, well I’ll figure something out.

Try a free trial and see how you like it
Props to Jesus and Eric for getting paid but

I miss Recruitocosm Jesus. The interesting info has gone way down and the hokey teasing noninformation BS has gone way up at IT.

I disagree

I don’t see any change. I think people wanted information more often, but how much can you really get until the team starts practicing? You’re still getting the same info about once a week. I think the teases are in addition to the main info, but I don’t think you’re getting any less than you were getting before. And I have a feeling the posts will pick up once spring practice begins.

exactly was JS said

practice report from the Asset weekly and humidors more often.

perhaps it is the same amount of info

just diluted with more crap
it almost feels like the difference between watching tv with and without commercials though

free trial?

I’m pretty sure IT doesn’t have any free trials.

I would love to hear the sales spiel of Sumlin to recrutis

Surely, the SEC spin is not mesmerizing them?

They're selling playing time and selling it well

Do they hold on to them? Time will tell.

By-the-way, Bill

Since you have moved to Houston, your scouting sorties will have to end with the metroplex schools, right? Now you get to check out Northshore, Pearland, Katy, Klein x 10 and Cy-fair x 25 schools, true?

Ha I'm going to need a Toll Tag

I’ll probably make some CFISD area games. Maybe some North Houston if Nahlin is driving.

Watch out for the cops on the Beltway!

They are sneaky..

I wish there was some distant football inside the Loop
decent football*
I'm a Houston HS affiendo my self and I would say you need to check the following schools out -

I think the schools to watch this year are Katy, Pearland Dawson, Pearland, LaPorte, Manvel, Northshore, 3 of the Kliens, 2 of the Cy Fairs, Friendswood and Memorial.

There are potential college players at all of these shcools. Unfortuantely, HISD has not really been supplying very much talent since the days of VY.

I'll try to attend commits' games and some North Shore games for sure
Sadly

Not much down here in Clear Lake area either.. Except Blake Blackmar haha

Actually, I forgot about the Fort Bend schools and Elkins as well.
If Prevot commits to Texas, I'll make some Alief games
on that note..

Elsiks RB this year was pretty good… Anyone know if he’s going anywhere? I think his name is bynum.

Sealy probably isn't a bad trip heading out west. 30 minute drive or less from west houston
Traffic could be tough, would have to be a Saturday game
Traffic is ALWAYS tough in Houston - just take your medicine. :-)
Sealy is 50 miles from Houston
I'm not sure what part of Houston Bill lives in. I lived on the West side (Spring Branch) and could make it in 30 minutes on the weekend to visit family
Yeah the part of Houston is big ha

Spring branch houston is a heckuva a lot closer to sealy than clear lake houston

No doubt!

My neck of the woods included Spring Branch, Katy ISD, and even some of the Cy Fair schools weren’t too bad of a drive

Well, he is correct about Northshore - UT has a pipeline there - and the Pearland schools.
North Shore has a really, really good 2014 class
Sad to sdee the demise of some really good HS football schools

Yates has dropped to 3A and they were the team in Firday Night Lites. Schools like Wheatley, Bellaire, Sharpstown and Madison are just not rlevent anymore – sad.

There has been an exodus of families moving out to suburbia and beyond. And the big reason is that the HISD school progams suck!

Yep people are moving to burbs for better schools

Expect Klein / Spring area to be on the best in the state in the coming years.

Cibolo Steele

Has stolen some of Converse Judson’s thunder in SA area.

Yates had a factory for 20 years

But Yates got kids from all over HISD — top athletes — who transferred in because Yates was the only school offering one particular course. Which all the football players signed up for!

Sad for all the kids at the other HISD schools.

Interesting

I’m from Houston, and my dad told me Yates was THE school back in the day. He told me they got all the good HISD kids, but he never knew why. Thanks for the info!

Ha! Yates was well known for it's football and basketball recruiting tactics.

So was Bellaire for it’s baseball team, as it was a magnet school

Back in pre-historic times...

When 4A was the top classification, HISD was in four districts. Most of the minority schools were in two districts, and the west side was in the other two. Yates was in one, and Kashmere was in the other. I went to Lee, and our big rival was Lamar (who we beat all three years – while winning district). Bellaire and Westbury were in the other – so that bi-district was the city championship, always played at Jeppesen (which was a HISD field then).

My junior year we played Kashmere, with Delvin Williams at RB. They wore our asses out 41-15. Yates may have been good at some time, but in the late sixties, Kashmere was THE HISD program.

Happy to say that after a several year gap, Lee is playing FB again.

Ha - damn, you are old

I remember Kashmere though – it and Wheatly were generally BB state powerhouses for years.
Lamar was the rich kids school – all the River Oaks kids, that didn’t go to Kinkade, went to Lamar.

You moved to Houston?

As a former resident of Katy, TX, I’m so sorry.

Ha, I think the Inner Loop and Katy are little different
Inside 610 is actually not too bad at all.

Check out Onion Creek/Cedar Creek cafe for an semi-Austin like environment and decent and cheap beer.

Well aware of both, excellent suggestions
Grew up in Katy.

I echo your opinion.

Oh yeah? which HS?

I’m a Mayde Creek alum

Taylor HS

Graduated 2007. Never played football or anything. I played tennis in high school actually, and in fairness, we were the tennis powerhouse in Katy at the time. The new rich kid schools (Cinco, 7 Lakes) stole that title the last few years though.

2007?

That is the year before I came to teach at Taylor. And I love it out here in Katy. Don’t know the reason for all the hate…

Houston hate?

When you were an Austin native, it’s hard to love Houston. But at least there is great salt water fishing nearby.
And days of 105 degrees and 80% humidity. :-)
Dallas, on the other hand……..sucks!

meh...

I live in Dallas and its way better than Houston IMO…

I would rather live (and am working towards living) in Austin, followed by Ft Worth, then Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston last if I had to for work or something, I would never move their voluntarily, and this is coming from a lifelong Rockets/Astros fan…

It's all about personal taste.

My personal list would be something like: Austin, Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Dallas.

Ha - well I have said before

I’ve lived in Houston since 1970, but I am only here temporarily. After I completed residency started looking for a home, I checked Austin first and income in Houston was 25% higher than any city in Texas – Austin was ridiculous, as was San Antone..

Austin has bad income/cost of living

My first job offers Austin was 15K less than the majority of job in the same field and houses were twice as high for the same sq/ft in similar neighborhoods than Dallas which is why I moved here…

I will admit - that is the "beauty" of Houston

Excellent average incomes, low unemployment and cheap housing.

Now, Austin - that's differennt

5 years ago I drove past the house I grew up in, Brykerwoods district, and I remember my parents paid $7500 for it – 1400 sq. ft., shaker shingle, post war house.
It was for sale and the realtor said they were asking $425,000 for it! Can you believe it?

Houston is cheap

And there is good food and good fishing nearby! IF you can stand all of the above listed problems. However, the Austin food is much better I will definitely admit that.

I would argue the food

How can you beat Taste of Texas for steaks or Papadeaux’s for seafood and Papacita’;s/Chuy’s for TexMex?

those are in just about every major city now...

even Longview has 2 out of 4…

So what you're saying is that Houston's food is so good it is being exported?
I don't really hate Katy.

It was a good place to grow up. Nice, quiet suburban community. Nothing wrong with that. Going to school in Austin was a fun change after 18 years in Katy though. Now, I just love Austin (who wouldn’t?) and stayed here after getting my engineering degree from UT. Austin is a helluva drug.

The humidity does suck in Houston though. That is one thing I actively dislike about Houston. The traffic sucks too, but tell me any freeway in Houston is worse than I-35 and I will call you a liar to your face. And my most recent impressions of Katy are spending 3 of my summer commuting from Katy/Cypress (where my parents moved to a couple years ago) in to downtown for internships. Even taking the Metro and getting to use the HOV lane, it’s an hour each way. Ouch. Houston is just that sprawling though, which is another annoying thing about it. All-in-all, I do not hate Katy though.

I always thought Houston traffic was bad until I moved here to the DC area.

DC traffic is like Houston traffic if Houston never expanded their freeways.

Yeah I've heard horror stories.

The Katy Freeway is actually not bad at all, after the recent expansion. That is one massive freeway nowadays.

People here in New York think I'm joking when I describe the Katy Freeway.
D.C, NYC and LA Traffic can't hold a candle to

Honolulu. If you ever got caught in traffic there and that volcano erupted, you may as well make your peace – you’re dead!

+1000

I’m in DC three weeks a month. There is nothing to compare to 66 at rush hour, the Beltway any time of day, or 95 from the Springfield Interchange south in the afternoon. I’ve see the Beltway between 95 and the Dulles Toll Road CRAWLING at 10:30 AM. I’ve taken three hours to go the twenty five miles from Springfield to Quantico on 95 on a Friday afternoon. I now time my flights based upon traffic there. Land mid day, depart early AM and stay right by the a/p that night. Anyone who bitches about Austin traffic hasn’t seen ANYTHING. And just imagine how much worse it would be w/o the Metro.

Can't rec this enough. We've basically lived the same life.

Grew up in Katy (I mean, after I got to Texas from Alabama, California, and India) and moved to Austin and never seriously looked back. Austin has a way of spoiling you.

Living in Houston is like living in the swamp of swamps, the humidity is so bad. Other swamps come and gather and pay respects to the swamp that is Houston. But I disagree about the traffic. Austin has perfected the art of finding new and ingenious ways to create traffic jams out of thin air. Houston’s traffic isn’t so bad by comparison, especially when you take into account the size of the city. If Houston roads were as poorly designed as Austin roads (a lot of this is due to how quickly Austin grew in the last 15 years and through no one’s fault), I’d still be stuck in traffic and not typing this.

Katy was a nice place to grow up, in conclusion.

Although a Chicago area native,

I’ve spent about half my life living in Texas (4.5 in Katy area, 3.5 in Houston for grad school, 8.5 in Austin). I love all three places and all have their pros and cons.

I moved back here to Chicago a little over a year ago from Austin and I must say that I generally agree with you about Houston vs. Austin re: traffic. Austin traffic is, relatively speaking, worse than in Houston. Houston did do a good job of building a road system that would keep up with growth about as well as could be hoped and, if you’re trying to get somewhere during a busy traffic time, just avoid the freeways and Galleria area if you can and it’s not that bad.

Austin, however, should not be given any kind of free pass by saying that “a lot” of the reason the traffic is as bad as it is now is because of growth and that is nobody’s fault. Indeed, back in the 60’s/70’s/80’s a lot of road growth/improvement (much in the form of freeways) was refused in the hope that enough people would stay away to the extent that it would never become a problem; this was done in spite of population growth concerns that have largely proven well-founded. Now the city is in a lot of trouble and improvement is hindered by NIMBY’s and various other headaches that weren’t there 35+ years ago.

All in all I certainly love Austin, sympathize with environmental concerns, and might end up there again someday, but that is one thing I’ll always have trouble tolerating: the incompetence, stubbornness, and/or general lack of foresight or “can do” attitude of city government/planning. Some things, such as building more roads, indeed have some unfortunate side effects, but it could have been done better than it has been and denying the inevitability of population growth was a poor decision that has made everything suck that much worse for everybody.

http://www.texasfreeway.com/Austin/historic/freeway_planning_maps/freeway_planning_maps.shtml

As an old Austin native, I never saw a traffic problem.

When I left in 1962 there were only 179,000 people in Austin.

When it became the second silicon valley, all the west coast hippies, ecstatic over an opportunity to escape Cali, arrived with bags of money and drove up local housing costs to ungodly levels Furthermore, when you come from the traffic morasses of the big cities of Cali, Austin’s traffic just ain’t that bad..

I'm a Mayde Creek alum, CO 2001.
Congrats man.

I went to the elementary, junior high, and high school.

Good times - although I didn't go to the elementary school.
Hypothetical

Texas goes undefeated for two years, beats two SEC teams to win back to back national championships. The catch: the basketball team and baseball teams are winless in those same two years and the laughingstock of the nation. Do you take the deal?

Nooo

winless basketball and baseball is a deal breaker. Tha’d be terrible.. So many games in both sports!

Who cares if baseball and basketball go winless?

We’re natty champs two years in a row. That’s all we’ll be talking about! Football season never ends at UT.

If championships truly are the measuring stick, then probably, yes.

I’d be miserable, but I’d still take it

going winless in basketball would be comical to watch

yes please

Nooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't make me think about that.

Gosh.

Out of the six seasons (three sports over two seasons each), two championships would be excellent

Obviously Augie’s boys could win that many, and Mack could win one, but that’d be extremely unlikely. Two guaranteed national titles instead of up to three, but more likely zero? Sure.

Absolutely

Personally, I am barely aware that basketball on any level actually exists and college baseball is practically invisible to the point that it is difficult to follow with any worthwhile degree of intensity.

To those who know: will the LHN show a lot of baseball?

The LHN will show every home game, as well as the UT games in Houston.
How do you view the QB rotation will play out in the next 3-4 years with the recruits we have?

Will it be like the Leach years where a guy only gets to start in his Junior year when the older starter finally graduates?

By Leach years I meant like how it played out at Texas Tech. Sorry for the misphrasing.

does this make sense? is this possible?

2012: Ash-McCoy-Overstreet(wildhorn)-Brewer(redshirt)
2013: Ash-McCoy-Brewer-Overstreet(wildhorn)-Swoopes(redshirt)
2014: Ash-Brewer-Swoopes Overstreet(position change)
2015: Brewer-Swoopes
2016: Brewer-Swoopes
2017: Swoopes

I'd love that

I’d rather have Brewer above McCoy in 2013, though. And there will be someone else in the pipeline by 2014. I think Mack said somewhere that he wants to recruit at least one QB a year.

I think the QB competition gets white hot in 2013
Swoopes ain't gonna sit on the

bench for 4 years! If he’s not getting meaningful snaps by his third season, he’ll be on the first train headed for UH or Colorado

Absolutely - not to worry though

The minute he steps onto campus, he becomes the best QB on the team!

I think Swoopes redshirts

Maybe sees a little playing time as a RS freshman, competes for the starting job as a RS sophomore.

Very Vince-like
Closer to Pryor

I don’t think Swoopes has the ceiling of Young. Watch Young’s HS tape. It’s absurd.

In terms of his career trajectory
Well Swoopes

hasn’t played his senior year yet, so we will see.

Oh, I agree and he should

But he will eventually push Brewer out, in my opinion.

I think Swoopes is closer to Pryor than VY

VY was on another planet.

Granted, that's not an extremely high bar

But that’s still a highly unlikely thing to be the case.

Bill

Who do you like the most at safety? I hope Texas continues the trend of speedy head-hunters.

Safety

I like Marcell Harris the best at safety. Cravens is a close second. Miles is the best in state, but does he stay there. Baltimore is a good player, but I’m not sure if there’s room for him. Maurice Smith can probably play both (that’s big with Akina).

im shocked that you would take harris over cravens

i havent seen either’s tape but damn goes GHG love cravens.

What is your take on Harris - is he too much of a reach?
Honestly, I think Cravens is a tougher get than Harris

Akina has done a lot of leg work on Harris.

There's an awful lot of Receivers coming in on JD2.

With the Oliver commit and number we got in 2012, are we interested in adding much more in 2013? Do recruits get disappointed when they don’t get an early offer? Or is it they already know they’re chances after talking to their recruiters for JD2?

In the past, yes recruits would get disappointed if they weren't offered by Texas during the Junior Days

I think this will change as recruits begin to understand that Junior Days are about evaluations.

And RSJ would be the top dog
Yea, forgot about RSJ. Crowded field.
Wonder why RSJ is making some kind of Wed., whoop-de-doo, announcement?
It's a big decision, RSJ wants to do his way, I'm good with that
Any predictions on who you think will be our top recruit when it's all said and done? Defensively and offensively.
Top recruits

National: Robert Nkemdiche (defense) Altee Tennpenny (offense)

State: Raulerson (defense) Perkins (offense)

I'll throw my 2 cents worth in

Tyrone Swoopes – followed by:
Raulerson
RSJ

Mine

Perkins becomes the best player of the group. James is a 3 yr starter and NFL center.

I think he meant in our class, not just in general.

Unless you legitimately think we’re going to land Nkemdiche. Now that’s optimistic! I like it!

Damn reply feature!

Thwarts me every time. Gotta pay more attention.

Correct the above mentioned 4 are best overall
How is Nkemdiche pronounced? Mispronouncing that is fraught with peril.
I did some google and the consensus is kim-DEECH-ee.
Bill

Do you have any thoughts on why OU recruiting in Texas has collapsed? I know they are still getting good classes by recruiting elsewhere and maybe collapse is too strong a word but they just dont seem as much a factor in Texas the last couple of years. Maybe their coaches just like to fly.

It's a new direction

I think it’s a combination of a few things, namely losing repeated head to head battles with Texas and some of their players from Texas haven’t worked out. They recruit Florida and California well. They are also after JUCOs pretty hard.

Sounds right

I had wondered if some Texas HS coaches were not being as upfront with OU recruiters as with Texas. I dont think any HS coach here in Texas wants to be on Mack’s bad side by being less than honest with UT recruiters.

Interesting idea
Offers

School – Total Offers – Offers in TX
Texas A&M – 53 – 32
Oklahoma – 57 – 15
LSU – 48 – 12
Texas – 12 – 11
Alabama – 84 – 3

Really I just thought this was an interesting juxtaposition.

wow that's unreal...
Bama has 84 offers, haha

An offer from Bama isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

no joke

I can’t believe these kids still haven’t figured it out, Bama stays in it with a bunch of the NSD kids until the end and bump off the solid borderline 4 star/high 3 star kid that’s been committed to them for over a year…when will they ever learn?

Did y'all see this?

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/alabama-send-recuit-105-letters-one-day-234515452.html

Not surprised at all

A guy on my team got quite a few last year, and he’s good but not exactly amazing.

84, 57, and 48 are all ridiculous.

There should be a rule against this.

You have it wrong

college coaches don’t want to be on high school coaches bad sides. Trust me on this.

Come next season, who do you expect to be our starting QB and predictions on how his season will turn out?
I think Ash will start and remain the QB if healthy

It’s early for predictions, but I think Texas can win 10 games.

Can't wait to hear the inside scoop on how Ash plays this spring.

It’s a monumental question. I think that he will make significant advancements though.

Has to get more accrurate on his deep throws, but wow did the decision making improve in the bowl game
Yep, and that's the primary reason I'm bullish on Ash. And that improvement

was after only a few weeks of quality time as the unquestioned starter.

I’m thinking he still has some upside that he’ll develop into this off-season. Man, I hope he does, then that 10 wins will not be too much of a stretch.

Top notch receivers will make Ash look good.

I’m still not convinced we have those, outside of Shipley.

Lest we forget - Colt had TWO all american receivers in Cosby and Chipley
Shipley - dang it!
Yep. We might need some freshman assistance.

The existing WRs need to step up. Like your Cheech impression.

Watch out for Marcus Johnson, I just have a feeling about him
Hope he doesn't have to redshirt
A healthy John Harris could be at the top of the depth chart
How about Jones - does he step in and grab a starters spot?
I like Cayleb

Not much middle ground with him. He’s either going to be a stud, or flame out. Having a NFL dad will help there.

The WR position the last few years

sort of reminds me of the DT position from a few years ago. We just haven’t been able to get/keep/develop the talent very well there (Shipley exception applies)

Well, Quan Cosby played a little. :-)
Talking more recent

2009, 2010, 2011 – and I meant the other Shipley as the exception.

But yes, I was a huge fan of Quan. We had it good there for a while. Roy, Limas, Quan, Ship.

A mean O-line and a good stable of RB's are the keys to Ash's success.

You can get by with Shipley and Davis/Goodwin. Those are solid receivers.

That's true

And I think we are headed to a very pleasant surprise with our OL.

We'll have those. That's for damn sure. Need to use them wisely.

I will check into Betty Ford clinic if the all get injured again.

I LOL'd - well played
Ha, yeah thinking back on this season.

Ash wen’t through some serious shit this season and still managed to play decently. The situation was about as messed up as you could possibly make it : True freshman, new offense, new coaches, QB carousel, RB injuries, WR injuries, tough schedule, etc, etc.

And he handled it with class which is huge in my estimation. I really look forward to seeing what he can do this year since the entire situation will be so much less dysfunctional.

Of course, we’ll never know about injuries but everything else is shaping up to be a much better situation.

Thought he made great strides in the bowl game.

Two really nice deep balls to Goodwin that were both called back for being out of bounds.

Bill's Guys

I hope Dashon Hall, Maurice Porter and Mike Mitchell are all offered at JD2. I think Porter is this year’s Camrhon Hughes. Daeshon Hall will play in the NFL. Period. Mike Mitchell might be the most athletic LB in the state. 38" vert.

HOLY MOLY BILL...

haha, can we talk about the recruits that we JUST signed for one quick second…i personally think its crazy how much recruiting has evolved…my question tho is about kendall sanders…where does he play into next seasons team (if at all)?? thanks, enjoy your insight

Sanders

One the best athletes in the state. A legit 6’1’’ runs a 4.4 40. He will start on offense and play WR. I also think he will get touches on jet sweeps. Big enough to play outside. Ketch has compared him to Dez Bryant, but I don’t see it.

wow!

starter? so who does he replace in the lineup?

Sorry I think Sanders will start off on offense, I don't think he'll start
ketch compared him to Dez

saying he has that kind of electric athleticism but not physically comparable

I see more Briscoe than Bryant
I'd take either?
Briscoe was horrendously underrated?
sad but true

KU had some real talent those years…my have they fallen

I agree.

Briscoe was a solid talent.

Baskeball Deal?

saw the deal above about you take back-to-back MNC for bad baseball and basketball season.

If i told you, that you can have Tx miss the Tourney this yr and play in the NIT for a Final 4 berth next yr

or

Take a first Rd exit this year and a guarantee sweet 16 spot nxt yr?

Final Four

all the way

not even a question
Final Four berth
Brewer will redshirt

Right? I know he is doing well right now, but ultimately doesn’t he need a redshirt?

I think he redshirts if both QBs stay healthy.
I wonder about this, Bill

Is this just internet musings or are the coaches really gooming him for the #2 spot?

I've seen that Brewer has opened some eyes, he can still back Ash and redshirt
and just let McCoy...

have the garbage time minutes?

That would make sense to me
That's true and didn't Mack specifically say he would be allowed to compete for the back up?
Mack said he could compete to be the starter.
Yeah, you've got to, right? Since McCoy may be a flight risk.
I like that he told all three they could start, makes them work harder and push one another
McCoy is no longer a flight risk, IMO.

Him “flighting” would really open things for up for us.

Random Question...

What’s up with 2012 LaMarque RB Tim Wright? I remember him being on GoBR’s big boards and he still hasn’t signed anywhere, is there more to the story?

Grades, he probably goes the JUCO route, maybe prep school
that was my guess...

but didn’t know for sure thanks

Wright sounds like a good kid, I hope he gets a chance somewhere
Off season workouts

Any update on how the early enrollees are looking in the offseason workouts? Is there anyone just dominating in the workouts?

Just a curious question and if you can’t answer no big deal but how did you become a writer for this website?

Off season workouts

Hawkins is said to be doing very well. As is Moore, he’s reshaping his body and should have an early impact. Brewer has opened some eyes. Watch out for Duke Thomas, there’s a lot of excitement around him. I think he’ll be a great one at Texas.

To answer your second question, I started off just like everybody else. I signed up on Burnt Orange Nation and became a poster. I also posted frequently over at Recruitocosm. I quickly got a rep as a lengthy poster. It kind of just took off from there.

You were a little more than a lengthy poster, my friend.

You were diligent in following recruiting and recruits and had very good insight – even though you were a yankee up in the Dallas area. At least you got south to Houston as soon as you could. :-)

Recruiting is certainly a hobby / obsession of mine

It’s difficult to explain, but it fascinates me.

Duke Thomas is the real deal

Saw him at his last playoff game at Jerry World against Rowlett…

Duke playing as a QB didn’t impress me much though he had some nice moves, it was his kick/punt returns that made me gwak in amazement…

Every time Rowlett kicked the ball off he would return it past the 50 save one time I think he only went to the 40…

He even muffed a catch and dropped it clear to the ground, turned around, picked it up and still made it across the 50. He was so scarey that in the final minutes Rowlett decided that they would try for a first down on a 4th and 7 on the 45 rather than punt the ball to Duke…

He was electric, glad he’s a Horn.

Fantastic evaluation, this is why Akina is the best in the business
Bralon Addison was like this if not even better.

Texas missed out on this kid – no way in hell the kid should have gone to Oregon.

What would make me happy at the Second Junior Day

Porter, Prevot Hall, Mitchell, D. Davis and Maurice Smith all receive Texas offers. Perkins commits quickly.

I’d be happy with either Prevot or Hall. Same with Mitchell or D. Davis.

I’d like to Massington get an offer. I have no idea how that happens.

Hey bill...

I keep a sheet on UT’s recruiting targets, do you mind taking a look at pointing out any possible big names that I’m missing?

Here’s a link to the sheet

I can post it in the thread too, but I didn’t want to hijack it…

You know how to work a spreadsheet my man

I agree with many of your percentages, I’d probably put Samples higher though.

those were GoBRs

and what we can get out of the IT guy in Q&A…

The Manning percentage seems about right, but I'm tempted to knock it down
I'd bump up RSJ

hopefully it will be that nice shade of orange on Wed around 2pm

Altee Tenpenny

Not because UT wants him, or has a chance to get him, but because that name should be required by law to be on every list of football names.

lol

I actually had him on there for a while but UT didn’t really stand a chance so he was a guy that got trimmed off…

The Dime is my favorite nickname for Tenpenny
Bama

How long until someone catches up with Bama talent wise? Or is Saban just that good of a coach and motivator?

I'll give Bama credit

Not the best home state to recruit out of, but they’re next to Florida and Georgia. 2 of the top 4 recruiting states in the country. This notion that Bama does more with less is laughable. They have plenty of resources and use them well. They do some questionable things, but those championship count.

They had a lot of luck in getting them...

Colt going down (along with the rest of my California vacation), and the whole debate on whether or not to have a rematch and all..they’re good but any consistent top ten team could do it with that kind of luck.

Flip side just look at Boise, if ever there was a year to get in a NCG this was it, and then they lose on a FG to TCU on the blue…sad when you actually think about it (with the exception of the TCU fans).

It wasn't luck that took Colt down. Just one idiot OC who so disdained the need for....

implementing a running game that he used his spread passing QB as a running back for his faux running plays.

So much hate for GD,

I mean, he used Colt to Colt’s ability, it was just a couple unlucky plays that got him hurt. Can’t pin those on the OC. If we woulda won that game, it would be opposite.

True regarding Colt

But it was his inability to produce a consistent running game, especially a power running game, that led to Colt getting hurt against KSU, and then took away the early momentum in the A&M game. With a healthy Colt, we most likely win both games, and then have a good shot at the MNC game that year.

He seemed to have no problem getting a terrific running game going with good OL and RB coaches

Ricky was already established when GD arrived, sure, but Mitchell and Benson were also highly productive.

Colt got hurt against KSU

because he took a bad hit to the shoulder/head. It had nothing to do with not being able to establish a run game. I’m positive most coaches would’ve called a sneak in that situation.

hmm...

we HAD to sneak it because we could run it in short yardage situations…

Well,

HAVING to sneak it is a matter of discussion. But I’m just tired of GD being blamed for Colt getting hurt.

I don't blame him...

but that’s the reason we did that play, but its a play we should have been able to do regardless

Right right,

I wasn’t pointing it at you in particular. I’m not a big GD fan, but it’s easy to say we lost Colt because he called that sneak. Well, a lot of coaches would’ve called that sneak. It was just a freak hit that doesn’t happen 9/10 times you run that play.

Saban fits that culture like a glove

questionable tactics with a win at all costs attitude. championships trump everything else. the administration and fans will let him do his thing as long as he continues to win and win big. Saban is basically running a semi-pro team in college.

I agree, Bama fans could care less if they're on probation
they hit a homerun with that hiring

match made him heaven. plus, with Saban flaming out in pros, he will stick around for a long time.

II think the saying

“If you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t tryin’,” originated in Alabama.

I love it

If U aint cheatin U aint tryin

It's kind of Ricky Bobby Esque

If U aint 1st your Last

The 5 commitments

Oliver committing early was a bit of a surprise to me. I expected him to commit to Texas, but not so soon.

Robinson was very surprising. I thought he would at least take some visits first.

Getting Swoopes early is huge, he can Raulerson can do some damage recruiting for Texas.

Big time leaders

These are the guys that recruits will want to be playing with. First guys picked on the playground type kids

I don't get Sabans recruiting persona

He has the personality of a 3 week old Kumquat!

have to look at what he is selling

Barron, Upshaw, Richardson, and Kirkpatrick are all consensus first round picks. Son you can be Bama’s next first round pick if you play for me.

Josh Thomas Ja'Braylin Thomas

What’s going on with these guys? They seemed to be some top targets early and seem to have faded.
Scout reports Josh Thomas has an offer.

Thomas and Thomas

I think Texas can slow both. I personally like Porter better than both. Could be telling that Ja’Braylin Thomas wasn’t invited to either Junior Day.

Bill, I'd love your thoughts on our QB situation.

I’ve got a lot of worries about our depth chart getting a bit clogged up. Specifically, if Ash starts through his senior year (and I think after his bowl game performance this is not especially unlikely) what happens to Brewer and Overstreet?

We’re looking, in this vaguely relevant hypothetical, a situation in which both Brewer and Swoopes don’t have the opportunity to start until their respective redshirt junior years. This kind of thing has absolutely worked at other schools (USC is a great example of this) but we haven’t really pulled it off well here, like… ever.

Honestly, my take is that I wouldn’t mind seeing Brewer and Swoopes not play significantly until their redshirt junior years, but do you think we can keep them around long enough to make this work?

Thanks!

What I meant to say and badly conveyed was that:

How do we keep Brewer/Swoopes from going G.J. Kinne or Jevan Snead on us?

QBs are going to transfer if they're not playing

I don’t think there’s any way around that.

How did USC pull off the Palmer-Leinert-John David Booty-Mark Sanchez thing?
Some coaches sell it better

Leach had QBs waiting 4 full years before they started.

Well it doesn't hurt that

they have a 50% of re-writing the record books each season. I don’t know…maybe some kids think that’s cool.

For the most part

Leach was recruiting 3 star QBs. Some of them may not have as many options coming out of HS. Still, though, what Leach did is pretty remarkable. The longer he has been gone from Tech, the better he looks. Long live the Pirate at Wazoo. You are missed in the B12

QB depth chart

Certainly possible that Ash is something resembling a 4 year starter. Brewer would be a redshirt junior in that scenario. I know most players don’t like the idea of starting for just 2 years, but it’s very common. Make no mistake, Brewer and Overstreet are coming to Texas to take Ash’s job. That’s how it works.

I don’t think Overstreet will redshirt if he stays healthy and remains at QB.

Them's the breaks I guess

Good point about this being a competition after all. Part of the reason we were in the 2010 mess (Gilbert with backup McCoy and behind them basically nothing) was probably because of the “anointing” of a QB that Mack did.

We really got lucky that Colt owned the job so completely. Imagine if his career had stonewalled after Jevan transferred. 2010 could have come in 2007, with Chiles and the Wildhorn as a backup.

Yep, Brewer and Overstreet shouldn't be at Texas unless they're here to be QB1
Good points,

which is why I’m all for bringing in Barrett WITH Swoopes, if both will come.

I just can't figure out how we have room for 2 QBs

when we only have room for 1 LB

Is it definitive we are only in one 1 LB?

I don’t know that’s why I’m asking. We do have youth and depth in the LB corps. I don’t see why we wouldn’t take two talents like Barrett and Swoops and go LB heavy a year from now.

according to the people in the know it is...

they may add another after the attrition numbers start rolling in down the road but for now they told recruits that they were still evaluating LBs since they only had one spot…from what I’ve read/been told.

Interesting.

Again, I would rather take two QBs this year and go heavy LB next year if we have to, but I would be surprised if we don’t take at least 2 LBs when all is said and done.

I mean,

it’s kind of early to say we absolutely won’t take other players at any position. Look at Swoopes’ commitment. It went from “QB recruiting=shut down” to “Well, Barrett is still coming for JD2, and it ain’t for cupcakes”. You know what I mean?

A&M

Of their recruits, how many are legit talents that we would love to have? And just a random comment, but would looooove to play Bama in the title game if we got there! Someone has to beat them, why not us!?

They have 5 verbals from 4 stars

I would take Isiah Golden and Ishmael Wilson. Maybe Griffin

TAMU commits

Hey it’s a good start. I think Texas should stay on Golden and Wilson. The Wilson commitment is strange. I’d like to read some of the post commitment quotes.

Quotes from TAMU Jr Day

“I had a blast. Apparently it was Mardi Gras Weekend at CS as well. It was udderly insane!”

Bama

Is going to be elite for a number of years… their 2012 and 2013 recruiting hauls are going to be insane.

Yep, only off the field stuff could derail them
Or the NCAA compliance department

cue laughter

Bama

Is perfectly capable of losing in a title game to whomever they play. They are a machine right now, no doubt. Texas can beat that team with a better offense. The defense is only going to get better in all phases.

I was at the title game last year.

That team can be beat

Quick thought on Hall and Porter

Porter is from Indiana. Notre Dame could be a problem here if they get serious. Baylor has already offered.

Hall is from Washington and is tight with ASJ. Watch out for UW. Texas is evaluating him as a TE and a DE. Could be a nice angle to take.

Hall

I need to watch more film on Farria, but Hall is my top DE in the Southwest. Prevot is a close second.

The last championship game was not as impressive as it looked I believe

Don’t get me wrong, Bama’s team was clearly still one of the best teams in the nation, and they proved they deserved to play in the game 100%, but they are an SEC team playing an SEC team. Their defense was specifically designed to stop an offense like LSU’s. It is not a huge shock that they did so well. I would like to see a Bama team play a top offense from the Big 12 or even the Pac 12. If they had played one of those teams, i believe they would not have looked nearly as dominate because they would have to rework their whole defense.

In my opinion,

Saban has totally figured out the SEC and has created a beast of a team that is specially desinged to win the SEC west. Outside of the SEC, i dont believe the team is truely as good as its numbers show. Just look at who they played in their last two NCs: Texas without Colt and LSU (SEC).

1 SEC title in 5 yrs

So hard to say he figured out the SEC. Guy is a good coach that has had some luck on his side. Getting a shot to at a rematch. Got in over USC. Got to play OU in the title game despite OU getting beaten like a dog by KSU in champ game. He has had a blessed run

Agree

He has rec’d all of luck that hasn’t gone to Mack:

-Benson hurt/Simms INTs/Geiggar roughing call against CU
-Colt hurt against KSU
-2008 3 way tie
-Colt hurt against Bama

I saw on ESPN

That 2013 Georgia JUCO OL Trenton Brown who was offered by UGA had us in his Top 5. Are we even looking at him? Do the coaches look at JUCOs this early, or is it more of a last minute “we need this now” thing?

Honestly that's the first time I've heard his name

Could be one to watch. Ish Wilson is off the board right now. Gustafson could join him soon. Texas knows how many OLs they need to take, and they’ll get them.

What role do you see Jake Oliver taking in our offense?
Oliver

He’s obviously an outside receiver. Jaxon Shipley is the only WR that will come in more polished. Jake is a legit 6’4" and catches the ball at the highest point. Not sure if he’s a deep threat, but he’ll go get some jump balls. Jake needs to continue to improve his speed, that’s the only aspect of his game that needs work. I think he can be the next Eric Decker.

I don’t think Cayleb and Jake are redundant, but they will be in direct competition. One will play more than the other.

I think this is where Massington fills a need. Texas just doesn’t have a size / speed combo like him. 6’3’’ guys that run 10.7s 100s are pretty hard to find.

RE: Oliver as a deep threat

I think he’ll get behind some DBs, but it’s going to be because of the play call, and superior route running. He’s not going to out run a CB in the Big 12 on a go route.

Get Oliver

a parachute, some large diesel truck type tires, and rope.

And some trashcans to puke in
Exactly.

Building speed is very very difficult. It has to naturally be there, just untapped. I would love to see him come off the line faster and break into and out of cuts faster. Those things can always be improved.

Gotta bet a white receiver, right?

I was thinking Ron Gardner or Larry Fitzgerald in their college careers. A lot of people questioned whether they had the speed to get separation, but they had all those ball skills, size, strength, etc.

Another thing I believe I saw that Jake needs to improve is not body-catching. He didn’t do it a ton, but more than I expected to see.

Maybe I'm just seeing what I want to believe

But to me the last couple of classes and it seems already with this one, that we are getting tough minded, prideful, workaholic footballers. These guys are really WANTING to BE HORNS for all that right reasons. They all want to come in, work their tail off to get the respect of football nation! Win some tough games. It is fun to read between the lines, some the committed and on campus youngsters. They are buying in to the idea of hard work rather entitlement from previous teams’ accomplishments!

There was real problems with the 2009 seniors

They failed to lead their team. Sam Acho was one of the few leaders.

Yes please on massington!

Who else is in on that guy?

His best offers are Baylor, Ole Miss and Mississippi State

He’s right there for the taking.

TCU and Oregon State have also offered
Why so few I wonder

Size and speed are that good, seems odd

There will be a lot more in fall

Certainly an under the radar prospect.

I don't think tcu counts now

How do you tell momma that you want to go play at a druggie school…

Appreciate everything BFLT!

Thanks for taking the time! It is greatly appreciated. Adios! For what it’s worth, I think Texas will have what it takes to make to the title in 2013. Chances are always slim, but it can be done. Goodnight.

Thanks again Bill....these are great.

WE have the talent….my biggest concern on getting to the NC game in 13 is keeping the coaching staff together !

Mack said it best

If coaches are leaving for other jobs, it’s because Texas is winning.

Been thinking

If I were a top flight recruit, why would I commit my junior year? Wouldn’t I want to visit schools and look around my senior year? Or would I like to have the ’ship in my back pocket just in case something bad happens? Or since I know where I would be going, Texas of course, why postpone the inevitable? Things that make you go hmmm.

I can understand a recruit waiting until the fall to make a decision

He’ll likely have all of his offers in and he can make official visits. Staying at the Four Seasons or the Ritz Carlton, flying on a plane for the first time is a big deal for these kids. This often gets overlooked, the recruiting process can be fun. A player won’t be recruited again until he’s a NFL free agent. Most don’t make it that far.

professional agents will recruit them

illegally and legally as their football careers come to an end.

Flip side of this is that uncommited players are constantly hounded

By coaches, recruiting services/media, fans of various teams, etc. and can grow tired of it very quickly.

Alright I'm out

Y’all have a good week.

later bill

thanks again
