What are the odds that one of these guys transfers? You have to think if Brewer shirts and Ash remains the starter for 3 more years, there isn’t really room for both unless one wants to be a backup. Or you use one in certain situations.
Either way, we should be in good shape. Both were/are consensus top 10 QBs in their classes, so one of them should work out, whoever it may be.
especially if Swoopes passes him at some point/wins the job when Ash moves on. But there are a lot of moving parts here, so it’s pretty hard to predict that far down the road. But yeah, the odds of all those guys exhausting their eligibility at Texas are extremely low.
Lets say Swoopes redshirts. Conner Brewer is my prediction to win the starting job after another subpar year by D Ash this year. David Ash will transfer, and we’ll have Conner Brewer (starter rFr), Case McCoy (backup), and Jalen Overstreet (3rd string), (Swoopes redshirted)
I think Swoopes is going to need some time to get used to the speed of the game. In his highlights, his pass progressions are kinda brutal. He locks on to one guy, then pulls down and runs past those 175 lb. DTs in 2A…i personally think we are all getting our hopes a little high on this kid. I don’t see him being as good as most people right now, mainly because I cannot buy into a 2A highlight reel. Just remember, VYs highlights were against Katy and Northshore, not some schools that honestly none of us have ever heard of.
It’s annoying, he hasn’t even signed or played his senior year of high school yet! Chill out with the small town crap. Remember where Colt came from? A freaking 2A high school, 714 people, and he was only 3 star recruit. Look where that nobody got us. Don’t dog on Swoopes yet people.
Is irrelevant. Guy is 6’4 and runs a 4.5. He runs a 4.5 on any field. Has a strong arm. His ceiling is fantastic. You can grab a 5a QB if you like, but there is not one that has this kids upside. If you have any confidence in your staffs ability to coach, this is the kid you take
In fact, there was much hand-wringing when he was given the reigns his redshirt freshman year. You can’t just throw away all small school players because their competition isn’t the same as VY’s.
the way that some of us can look at a few blurry “highlights” shot with a Super 8 from about a half mile away and still somehow manage to know more about a recruit’s potential than do Bryan Harsin, Manny Diaz, Major Applewhite, Duane Akina, et. al., who have actually watched the recruit compete up close and personal against, not 2A kids, but against the best that Texas can persuade to come to its summer camps!
I am in awe of you guys. Really.
Maybe you should tell Mack that he’s wasting time and money when his staff actually watches these kids in person when all they really have to do is to get a few grainy clips from the kid’s HS coach to learn all they need to know.
that we shouldn’t be excited about getting a great athlete from any division. I could honestly care less whether the kid came from TAPPS or 5A. My only thing is that when you watch his highlights (again highlights, not every snap, only the good ones) he seems like it might take him a bit to adjust to what he will be seeing in October at the Cotton Bowl. I just don’t think he can come in and play right immediately. Thats all I was saying. I hope he can, and I hope he wins us 4 national championships. I was just merely giving my observation.
That said, there is a major difference in adjusting to D1 when you have come from a 2A as opposed to playing 5A…the size and speed of 5A, as well as the everyday competition in practice, helps mold these kids so they can adjust to the college game slightly faster than 2A.
I was not, however, suggesting that 2A players should not be appreciated and recruited. I was just giving my point of view.
This is vastly over-rated. I will use miles to illustrate my pt. The difference between 2a and 5a is the distance between Austin and Dallas. The difference between 5a and the RRR is the distance between Bejing and Austin. There is nbo high school ball that can prepare you for that, you need time on the practice field and spring ball to adjust to it.
but considering he’s probably spent most of his time in Whitewright, coming to Austin is going to be this huge, possibly overwhelming experience for him. Especially playing for a team located in the heart of downtown. Hopefully, it’s what he always dreamed of and he loves every minute of it and, thus, adjusts well. Having kids from small towns play for us is nothing new, of course, so we should have the wherewithal to aid in his adjustment. But there’s crime here probably unlike he’s ever seen. Not to mention the nightlife.
He seems like a good kid, though. I like quiet, soft-spoken people.
He was simply saying that he probably hasn’t had to deal with or even be near anything like that before and it could take an adjustment. Not at all a race thing, that’s a concern with anyone from small towns.
was just curious why we were worried about his character all of a sudden. One this about Mack, he doesn’t take guys that he KNOWS have character issues. Im just worried that by the time this kid actually plays, he’s going to be so hyped by our fan base that he’s doomed. I just think its crazy that were sitting here talking (myself included) about a 17 year old kid that none of us really know anything about. Its fun to talk about, but Id like to think Connor Brewer is the answer for the next 4 years.
Kids from small towns can get overwhelmed by the adjustment to big city life and academics in classes with hundreds of students. The fact that his mom is a teacher means he’s probably a bit sheltered in school and it will be a huge change for him to adjust to the size of UT.
And the kids and video games make me nuts. My nephew was valedictorian and scored very high on his SAT. His mother and father were both teachers at his small school in Indiana. He ahd a full ride to Purdue but promptly flunked out. He had no life experience in self-discipline or being independent. He played video games and skipped classes.
He flipped burgers and matured quickly from there and is now college grad and IT guy at a hospital. But I continue to worry about the kids that live sheltered lives at little schools because the UT experience can overwhelm them. I’ve seen many a transfer due to this, and not just concerning athletes. Swoopes sounds like a great kid and well grounded, but I hope he is ready for the work that has to be done in the classroom as well as on the field.
And he does seem really well grounded. My concern is more about maybe grounded to the point of “sheltered.”
Kids from big schools and little schools don’t make it at Texas, but I’d be curious to see the comparables on that. My recollection from my first year to second year was that it was the small town kids that had more trouble adjusting.
in this thread knows him a tenth as well as Bryan Harsin knows him. So when you express the kind of skepticism about his ability, his maturity, his ability to adjust to a more metropolitan environment, etc., that some in this thread have expressed what you’re really doing is questioning Harsin’s judgment — and there’s nothing wrong with that if that’s the way you feel about Harsin.
Good article
Thanks for posting. HornsNation always has a ton of articles, but I find that they get buried sometimes, or you have to search for them…

Quite surprised the kid committed to us
Wonder what is the QB plan for Texas the next cpl of years?
When Tyrone Swoopes arrives
C. Brewer (rFr or Sophomore)
David Ash (Jr)
McCoy (rSr)
Jalen Overstreet (rFr or Soph)
Giving us 5 Qbs. WOuldnt be surprised if Overstreet/Ash transferred.
MJY6087 - February 20, 2012
I think the plan
is to take the best players available and then let them sort themselves out.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 20, 2012
Brewer or Swoopes

I think Brewer would be more likely,

I could see two transferring, just like this year
Lets say Swoopes redshirts. Conner Brewer is my prediction to win the starting job after another subpar year by D Ash this year. David Ash will transfer, and we’ll have Conner Brewer (starter rFr), Case McCoy (backup), and Jalen Overstreet (3rd string), (Swoopes redshirted)

That's the frame of mind I've been thinking
I was hoping to get a player who’d proven themselves at a higher level than what I saw from small towns up north would put forth.
Darklust - February 20, 2012
Three years of this hand-wringing is going to be awesome.
Go read this and stop worrying before I stop being nice about it.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 20, 2012
I can't decide which is worse
The hand wringing over the 2A QB, or the posts that have the current starter transferring when he arrives.
Clearly there is no middle ground.

I’m just going to be thankful I don’t have to moderate an A&M site.

codaxx - February 20, 2012
2A fields have a gravitational distortion field.
If he played at a 5A school he’d only be 6’1" and only run a 4.8.
marginal athlete at best.
CMDR - February 20, 2012
Shame on Swoopes
for not making his family move to a big city where he could play 5A ball.
And why do our coaches even bother visiting small schools at all? 4A Texas ball should be the smallest high schools we accept tape from.
CMDR - February 20, 2012
Colt McCoy was from a small school
In fact, there was much hand-wringing when he was given the reigns his redshirt freshman year. You can’t just throw away all small school players because their competition isn’t the same as VY’s.

ACnDaHorns - February 20, 2012
Well, he's not going to come in and play "right immediately".
No one is expecting that or even wanting that. I want to see plenty of years of Connor Brewer before I’m be ready for Tyrone Swoopes.

If he was white...
would you make a criminal reference? Cmon man. The kid doesn’t have a criminal record, why worry about that? Worry about the stuff you see on film
ACnDaHorns - February 20, 2012
He wasn't calling Swoopes a criminal
He was simply saying that he probably hasn’t had to deal with or even be near anything like that before and it could take an adjustment. Not at all a race thing, that’s a concern with anyone from small towns.

You misunderstood the post
He means a certain shock value that he might experience.
Especially coming from the town that was described in the article.

I'm even more worried about him now

He's a good student
Since his mom’s a teacher, she’s instilled a pretty good work ethic in him. No grades, no phone, no football…
He’s been incredibly well grounded in his recruitment process and seemed to handle it really well. I see no warning signs with Tyrone.
TxHorns989 - February 20, 2012
Yup
…and, I think the article said that she was the Valedictorian of her own class!
BurntOrangeTexans - February 20, 2012
Yeah, I saw that...she sounds very impressive
And he does seem really well grounded. My concern is more about maybe grounded to the point of “sheltered.”

If we didn't make half-ass speculations about things we only know about from a cursory glance
Then none of us would have anything to say, and BON (or SBNation) as a whole would cease to exist.
iamjackburton - February 21, 2012
Exactly
So is he saying we shouldn’t exist? It is all just chitter – chatter and speculation and throwing out pros and cons.
To sps’ point though, my money is on Mack, Applewhite and Harsin, so I’m very excited about the commit of Swoopes. Very excited.
Wrangler86 - February 21, 2012
I am liking this kid more and more
I hope Austin doesn’t mess him up! Haha.
