There were no hat games on Wednesday for Ricky Seals-Jones. No baby animals. No girlfriend revealing a shirt with the school of his choice. When the 6-5, 220-pounder made the decision to commit to Texas, he simply made the phone call to head coach Mack Brown with his family and then notified the assembled media that he had committed to the Longhorns.
It was hardly a shocking decision, as Texas appeared to have a significant lead for RSJ for some time, despite offers from around the country. The do-everything player for his high school is now the sixth commit for the Longhorns in the 2013 class, joining friend Tyrone Swoopes, the Whitewright quarterback who committed last Friday.
It's already an extremely strong offensive class for Texas, which now has a quarterback in Swoopes, a running back in Arlington Martin's Kyle Hicks, another wide receiver in Dallas Jesuit's Jake Oliver, and two potential offensive linemen in Celina's Jake Raulerson and Fort Worth Arlington Heights' A'Shawn Robinson. All that without receiving a single commitment on the first Junior Day.
Recruiting momentum unlocked.

ATH Ricky Seals-Jones #4 Sealy HS (Junior Highlights) (via CountdownCityPreps)
A star basketball player in high school who is averaging more than 30 points during his junior season, RSJ is one of the better athletes nationally for his size -- 6-5, 220 pounds. He has expressed a desire to play wide receiver in college, but could quickly outgrow the position, as he has the frame to carry 240 pounds or more in time without losing the speed that makes him a special prospect. At 3A Sealy, he also plays safety and could be an excellent outside linebacker or defensive end in college, though it's highly doubtful that he ends up on that side of the ball.
On offense, Seals-Jones mostly played quarterback for Sealy as a junior, though he did spend some time at wide receiver. A running quarterback, RSJ doesn't have the first-step explosiveness of some shorter players, but he does have solid speed when he does get going -- certainly enough to be in the upper echelon of college tight ends in that category -- and shows off some solid feet that allow him to change direction well for someone of his size. His jump cut laterally is particularly effective for taking the edge. As a result of his size and strength, he's difficult to bring down for smaller tacklers and at times has the balance to spin out of tacklers and stay on his feet.
There's not a lot of film on RSJ as a wide receiver, so it's difficult to get much of a sense of him as a route-runner, but it's probably reasonable to expect some transition time to be needed there to refine his skills. There is some evidence that he can use the leaping ability that makes him such a beast on the basketball court to high-point the football, but he doesn't always attack the football with his hands as a pass-catcher.
If he does grow into a tight end, there will be an adjustment period for him as an in-line blocker, but based on his highlights, he's a willing blocker downfield who can take out defenders in the open field who have their heads turned. Maulerson would be proud. If he stays at receiver for the first part of his career, his size could make him an excellent blocker on the perimeter in the wide receiver screen game and in the running game on the edge.
A left-handed passer, it's also possible that Bryan Harsin could have him throw the ball on trick plays, as he has the arm strength to push the ball downfield and can throw on the run.
On the other side of the ball, RSJ shows off his ball skills and instincts with a handful of interceptions and some vicious hits, much like Tyrone Swoopes.

YA BUDDY!
Thats great official news. Don’t really care what Rivals “says”, this kid is a 5 star talent….Hook Em!!!
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
5 star
I think the only reason he is 4 star is that people project him at TE. It is not a highly valued position in the recruiting world.
codaxx - February 22, 2012
Or he is not currently playing the position that he'll play in college (WR/TE)
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
...30 points a game basketball player
Could he possibly choose to play both sports while on the 40 Acres? We could always use a player who’ll stick around for three or more years. Plus, hopefully that means he has pretty sound hands.
Darklust - February 22, 2012
no...
i want him all for Mack
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
HOLY HELL!!!
Did you see his arm at the 3:10 mark? This kid is an all around athlete…straight up
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
Wylie and time will tell
Where he lands, but damn sure no doubt he is a very gifted athlete. Welcome RSJ and Hook ’em
Burnedsince61 - February 22, 2012
Now for Perkins, James, and Smythe
STLaw - February 22, 2012
never satisfied...
thats how championships are won
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
I agree.
Championships are won by STLaw’s inability to become satisfied.
Yossarian Rising - February 22, 2012
Samples, James, and Smythe
Perk doesn’t have his offer yet…
TowerPower - February 22, 2012
Perkins will have his offer on Saturday
STLaw - February 22, 2012
yes but not yet...
TowerPower - February 22, 2012
Eh, we are spacing them out
However, I’m not sure anyone commits pre-saturday or before Perkins
STLaw - February 22, 2012
I'll just leave this here
TowerPower - February 22, 2012
+1

Wrangler86 - February 22, 2012
Awesome.
WreckerTex - February 22, 2012
so if i call that number
can i get a full scholarship to oklahoma?!
ibleedburntorange49-9 - February 22, 2012
the real question is...
why would you WANT a full scholarship to Oklahoma?
horns1025 - February 23, 2012
Fireplace
It’s bound to get cold here soon, right? Need some kindling.
GoHorns - February 23, 2012
Who is RSJ similar to?
Bigger J. Finley?
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
kinda what i was thinking...
i would hope that he’s a little more motivated to be great…jermichael was good here, but he never really unlocked his full potential
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
Exactly
Had Finley been in a S&C program like we have now, I think he would have destroyed people
STLaw - February 22, 2012
Also if he had stayed passed his RS sophomore season.
mr.manager - February 22, 2012
*past
mr.manager - February 22, 2012
If he gains weight, then Yes
His frame allows for 20-25 more pounds worth of muscle on him. If he gains that weight, TE all the way
STLaw - February 22, 2012
He's already an inch taller and 20 lbs. heavier than Finley was as a Senior
I would imagine he is not nearly the pass catcher that Finley was at this point though since he isn’t playing much WR.
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
10 lbs. heavier.
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
but still a WR until the weight is added
Won’t move to TE unless he packs weight and increases blocking abilities
STLaw - February 22, 2012
Got you
I was talking more about the type of athlete he compares to….not necessarily the same position.
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
Honestly I have a hard time with this comparison
He’s just a freakish athlete but Finaly would be close. At QB, the kid balls like VY did in HS.
STLaw - February 22, 2012
But so does Swoopes
It is ungodly to think of Swoopes and Seals-Jones playing at the same time for UT.
By-tthe-way, do you think This years group will win an award for being the TALLEST class?
Snide Aside - February 22, 2012
hes not a qb...
he’s just the best athlete on the field and so he literally plays everything…his arm is strong, and with being left handed, the trick plays we can have with him will be fun…i just love that we are recruiting awesome football players, not just great athletes…This kid likes to hit, plays every position on the field and plays it well. I think he could do the same at Texas, so lets just hope he fills our need at TE…i won’t complain if he’s a dominating WR either
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
Finley wasn't that good of a pass-catcher at UT.
He had the dropsies and would have fit nicely on the 2010 team. He was also a bit stiff in running routes. He was just barely starting to “get it” when he declared early for the draft and headed on out. It was a real shame when he headed to the pros and OU’s Gresham decided to stay put in CFB. He’s been great w/ Green Bay but imagine how nice it woulda been had Colt had a TE during that 2009 season.
robthecob - February 22, 2012
Some drops sure
But consistently made difficult, uber athletic catches during his short time. Saying he’d have fit in with the 2010 is a major stretch.
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
Also
He is 3rd all time in catches at UT and had the 2nd most catches in a single season. I’d say he was a good pass catcher.
Horncasting - February 22, 2012
For a TE? Or for all positions?
BeeCaveHornFan - February 22, 2012 via mobile
For TE
Sorry
Horncasting - February 23, 2012
Dan Buckner
Did just fine. He had like 40 something catches that year as a Sophomore. He would’ve been a star by now had it not been for that incident that caused him to transfer. We took a huge step backwards at TE after that season.
But back to RSJ. I think there’s just so many things you can do with him, it’s scary. Can you just imagine us pounding the ball down a team’s throat with Brown, Gray and Bergeron in the backfield? And then when we do go play action, you have RSJ leaking out as a TE or H back? Oh the safety didn’t bite? We just look over to the 5’8-5’11 corner on 6’4 Cayleb Jones. Oh he’s covered too? Here comes Shipley running an under neath, Wes Welker type route. Brewer/Swoopes/Ash/Overstreet dump it off and we’re off to the races.
Or what about going wildcat with RSJ faking like he’s going to run, and stepping back and throwing a dart to Swoopes for the touchdown?
jdwall12 - February 23, 2012
Or how about this.
With Brown, Gray, Bergeron, as RBs, and Swoops at QB, RSJ at TE,———the return of the Wishbone?
Red and Black 71 - February 23, 2012
And that doesn't even include what Swoopes could do with his feet as the QB
Horncasting - February 23, 2012
Mind = Blown
BONation11 - February 23, 2012
Would be great
To see him and his parents/guardian put him on one side of the ball his Sr. year, to protect his assets. But that’s probably not gonna happen. On another post someone mentioned that he seemd to quit late in some games, it’s damn hard to play both ways full time.
Burnedsince61 - February 22, 2012
at a 3A, you cannot keep an athlete like this on the bench
Coaches will respect a kids development and injury risk for his future but are still employeed to WIN ballgames. He could easily ask to not play special teams due to injury risk or ask for a few series off, especailly if the other team is penned deep in their own zone and unlikely to break off an 90 yard play.
RQ - February 22, 2012
Nice Get
From the looks of it I think we found the guy to pick up the “Wild Horn” looks like he can do it as well as Fozzy did. either way good get and Welcome to the 40 Acres.
Fernando Serrano - February 22, 2012
Damn. This guys would probably be an asset on the golf team.
Athletes gonna athlete…
JoeT63 - February 22, 2012
Since RSJ is Eric Dickerson's cousin
Think he’ll tell us where the dead hookers are buried?
TXStampede - February 22, 2012
glad pontiac is out of biz or...
aggy would have lost another title on this one…
longhorn35 - February 22, 2012
I've seen RSJ play several times for Sealy
And he will WOW you on the field. This is a huge, huge UT pickup.
ogg - February 22, 2012
Position
While I have thought of him as a future TE, time and body development will determine his position. I am just glad he agrees that Texas is the place to be.
Welcome aboard!

Everyone needs to wish @orlansky_40AS a happy birthday
And tell him you think Vince Young is a great baby name

…I mean.. how would we know?

This guy becomes the best of the bunch. Plays the game the way its supposed to be played.

Is RSJ
what DGB might have been for us?
edsp - February 22, 2012
Makes me wonder...
STLaw - February 22, 2012
I wish, but DGB was not of this earth!
Snide Aside - February 22, 2012
IDK
UTLawGrad - February 22, 2012
good point...
def could be
ACnDaHorns - February 22, 2012
Like
RSJ will be a tremendous asset no matter what happens to him physically. 6’5 or 6’6 240 makes for a crazy slot threat. If he fills out to 260 or so, he could well be Jermichael II. It’s a win either way…Going to be a long time before he’s ever on the field, but makes the future that much brighter.
Tackchevy - February 22, 2012
Think about this
If you are Bryan Harsin, how exited are you realizing that athletes you once could only dream about are actually YOURS now?
How excited are you, realizing you basically have the picks of the litter and you are now working at an unparalled facility like Texas and play football in front of 100,000 screaming maniacs?
How excited are you knowing you don’t have to jack with a g..damned BLUE field anymore?
Snide Aside - February 22, 2012
Lots?
iamjackburton - February 22, 2012
It must like he got a Nintendo 64.

WreckerTex - February 22, 2012
Ha, ha - this tube was outstanding and probably exemplifies Harsin when Mack called him.
Snide Aside - February 23, 2012
This is a very good point
And why I think he might just stick around for a couple years to see what he can do with his talent.
GoHorns - February 22, 2012
Glad to see him commit
But as usual, nothing is for sure until signing day next year
MJY6087 - February 22, 2012
I LOL'd
MJY6087 – The glass is always half empty for you, isn’t it? :-)
Snide Aside - February 22, 2012
Haha
You know, I’ve learned not to be so optimistic when it comes to sports. THe last time i was optimistic (tristan thompson, JHam, and CoJo said they were returning) I was slapped in the face by them

The curse of the Hyphen ends
Big time pick up. #32 player in the country and rising.
billfromlaketravis - February 22, 2012
Was wondering
Where you were! Completely agree. This kid is a special talent.
SwimTexas - February 22, 2012
I am really going to enjoy watching Texas for a long time ! The waiting is painful.
MeatchickenHorn - February 22, 2012
RSJ
This is a great get and perhaps the most interesting recruit in yrs. He has the frame to play almost anywhere. He could develop into a fantastic OLB. Fast enough to cover and be a terror on 3rd and long. The next Finley? Maybe he stays at WR and is the second coming of Harold Carmichel. Even DE is a possibilty.
codaxx - February 22, 2012 via mobile
Just got off of work!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS! RSJ,!!!!!!!!
chefhorn - February 22, 2012
Let's not limit him by saying he is the next so and so
Kid can be as good as he wants to be. Codaxx is right in saying this is the most interesting recruit in years. Not since we have Ramonce Taylor have we had a guy who can play multiple positions like RSJ. Just hoping the coaching staff are able to utilize this guy’s full ability and he reaches his full potential at Texas.
jdwall12 - February 23, 2012
He lays down in games when ...
A good high school defense tees off on him several times, and Sealy starts losing badly (See last year’s first-round playoff loss to Navasota) … That said, Sealy is in a new region this year and don’t be surprised to see RSJ and the Sealy Tigers in the state semifinal – where they will be fed to LaMarque.
RSJ is simply amazing on the field. I remember seeing him as a sophomore thinking he was a beast. Then he was even more incredible as a junior. Can’t wait to see him in 2012. I haven’t seen freakish physical ability from a HS junior and senior since Dallas Wilson’s Sergio Kindle.
FreedomDip - February 23, 2012
So says the tigger that....just....lost....out...on....another....recruit.....to ....TEXAS!
