With the first Junior Day looming Sunday, it's time to take a look at the needs and numbers Texas will be looking at on the defensive side of the ball in 2013 (the offensive appraisal is here). It's going to be a relatively small class -- somewhere in the range of 18 to 22 or so depending on what type of attrition takes place over the spring and summer months, so the coaching staff will be even more selective in extending offers than they were last season. Here's the position-by-position look:
Defensive end: 2
The targets: Celina's Jake Raulerson (committed) Lawton (OK)'s DJ Ward (undecided), Fort Bend Marshall's Deon Hollins, Jr. (JD2)
The skinny: It's an extremely weak year in-state for pure defensive ends, as there aren't any currently on the radar past the already-committed Raulerson (who could easily be listed as an athlete), meaning that the staff will continue to evaluate the position and could look to another out-of-state prospect other than Ward, with Arizona's Marcus Farria the name that gets thrown around the most.
Hollins is an edge rusher at 6-2, 220 pounds and may project better as a 3-4 OLB. Right now, it seems that he may not even visit, as his JD1 visit has already been pushed back to JD2. If the staff informs the family that Deon isn't on the verge of an offer, it wouldn't be surprising to see him nix the trip entirely.
Fortunately for Texas, the four-man defensive end haul in 2012 seriously reduces the need in 2013, so the staff will be selective and it may not be until the fall that a serious in-state offer candidate emerges. Sharpstown's Reggie Chevis is drawing interest from Alabama as an OLB and is a guy that the staff could seriously evaluate, as well as Lancaster's Daeshon Hall, a lean basketball player who is raw, but possesses excellent athleticism for a 6-7 kid.

Defensive tackle: 1 or 2
The targets: Dallas Kimball's Justin Manning (JD1), Elysian Fields' Isaiah Golden (committed to Texas A&M), SA Madison's Vincent Taylor (JD1), Dallas Skyline's Kerrick Huggins (JD2), Shreveport Woodlawn's Christopher Robinson (JD2)
The skinny: Given the numbers listed above (and two could even be a high number for this position), it will be interesting to watch how things shake out at defensive tackle after landing four prospects there in 2012, though Brandon Moore only has two years of eligibility left.
The only obvious offer here is Manning, the younger brother of DeMarcus Granger who has essentially been told that Texas will extend an offer this weekend. As the best athlete in the state at defensive tackle, Texas will probably show some patience with Manning, as he has maintained that he's open despite the connections to Oklahoma.
It appears that Taylor could be the back-up plan, but it's questionable if he can put on the weight to even play a three technique in college -- he's a far better fit at the current moment as a 3-4 DE. As for the others, unless Manning tells the staff that he isn't interested or the coaches are intent on getting an early commitment to provide the depth, Huggins and Robinson will probably leave campus without offers.
Linebacker: 2
The targets: Harker Heights' Naashon Hughes (JD1), Kennedale's Brett Wade (JD2), Plano Prestonwood Christian's Mike Mitchell (JD2)
The skinny: Like the other two positions already discussed, the Texas coaches may take things slowly at the linebacker position to evaluate what isn't a particularly strong class in state, but does have some talent at the top. Well, to clarify -- the staff will probably takes things slowly after landing a commitment from Naashon Hughes, the younger brother of 2012 early enrollee Camrhon Hughes and teammate of top interior target Darius James. Expect that commitment on Sunday.
After Hughes, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz showed some interest in Wade last fall, but the JD2 invite and late switch by Dalton Santos aren't good signs for the Kennedale 'backer receiving a late February offer.
Though Wade hits like a ton of bricks, he doesn't have the size or top-end speed of Mitchell, an intriguing prospect because he has the frame to eventually spin down to defensive end if necessary, but can run like a safety once he gets going. A violent, relentless player, Mitchell doesn't break down particularly well in space, which hurts his tackling radius greatly. He also doesn't sink his hips well and bring his feet as a tackler, though he does have the core strength to finish tackles with evil intentions. It's possible that improving his lower body flexibility would help in those areas, but if kids aren't already flexible in their legs, it's hard to make significant improvements there -- you're either stiff or you're not.
Defensive back: 2 or 3
The targets: Groveland (FL)'s Marcell Harris (will not attend, has been offered), West Mesquite's Kameron Miles (JD2), Sugarland Dulles' Maurice Smith (JD2), Mansfield's George Baltimore (JD2)
The skinny: If there's a developing trend in these previews, it's obviously that numbers are tight across the board, so this is another position where the coaches will likely continue to evaluate, at least through the spring.
With this group, it's notable that all of the names above probably project best to safety, with Smith the only player who could probably play corner as well. The corner evaluations continue, especially with Bastrop's Antwuan Davis, who looked like a lock for an offer before a back injury that is now healed slowed down his junior season.
Miles and Harris are both big safeties who could eventually end up playing a similar role at linebacker as Demarco Cobbs and Peter Jinkens, which could leave Baltimore on the outside looking in, despite the fact he's a slightly-less talented version of Adrian Phillips. First in line for an offer in this group is probably Miles, who received a JD1 invite, but opted to re-schedule to come down with his teammate, Eldridge Massington.
Athlete: 1 or 2
The targets: Sealy's Ricky Seals-Jones (JD1), Houston Cy Falls' Jacorey Warrick (JD2)
The skinny: Seals-Jones is one of the top targets in the entire class and his relationship with Tyrone Swoopes could help land the Whitewright staf if RSJ opts to pledge early to Texas, a distinct possibility with LSU looming as seemingly the only other significant threat.
Warrick would probably receive his offer as a defensive back and fits in the mold of previous takes who excelled on the offensive side of the ball, but have the tools to make the transition to defense. The odds favor the staff continuing to evaluate the position and holding off on offering Warrick at JD2, unless the staff has him at the top of their cornerback board.

Re: RSJ
Thought RSJ’s ATH tag was for WR/TE.
Does he project as a D1 defensive take? OLB?
CMDR - February 9, 2012
RSJ played safety and quarterback in 2011, as you may already know
I think his coach just doesn’t really employ the pass, so he thought he’d put the ball in his best playmaker’s hands and let him run. I can’t find complete stats anywhere, but I think the descriptions of him as an elite WR are mostly based on his athleticism, size, and a little time spent as a receiver. I have read that he’s open to playing TE, but wants his crack at WR. That makes me think he’s not really having any significant conversations about playing defense, although he obviously has the size and athleticism to make him a sensible projection at OLB or even rush end.

Just Tell Him Wants to Hear
Get him on campus, and if you end up lying to him – just square it up down the road. Nothing more asinine than losing a kid because you refuse to give him a shot at his dream position.

Credibility
Mack and Texas are where they are today because of credibility. It’s a good business practice to shoot straight.

Agreed

Daeshon Hall
is a Seattle native (Garfield HS) and transferred to Lancaster to live with his mom, who moved there for a job. He is apparently homesick and is considering moving back to the Seattle area to live with his dad.
From a recent Scout pay story:
‘The reason Hall is considering a move back to the area is two fold — his father lives here and he misses his friends. "I’m thinking seriously about it, but I also have sorta adapted down here," Hall said.’

Great read
Do you think the staff is holding a spot for Quincy Russell as one of the DT’s next year?
LongandHorny - February 9, 2012
Good Question
Curious about Russell as well.
SwimTexas - February 9, 2012
I think that's possible.
I’m not sure if the coaches have made a final decision about it, but Russell is on track to graduate and apparently still wants to come to Texas, although I believe that the coaches can’t really have any contact with JUCO players right now.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 9, 2012
Did Russell play last year?
There seem to be conflicting reports as to whether he actually played and the number of years of eligibility he’d have left if he shows up in 2013.
Horncasting - February 9, 2012
Just looked it up
Played in 10 games. Had 31 tackles, 2 tfl, 1 sack.
So if he plays next year, he ll have 3 years to play 2.
Horncasting - February 9, 2012
Respectable for a freshman
billfromlaketravis - February 9, 2012
wow...
very impressive
TowerPower - February 10, 2012
i do not
believe he was their best DT. Kid that signed at KSU I believe was their best. Just to put it into perspective
codaxx - February 10, 2012
was that kid a Sophmore?
or a Freshman?
TowerPower - February 10, 2012
Soph
I believe. Originally signed with Nevada out of high school.
codaxx - February 10, 2012
Besides Maulerson who is a defensive must get?
Ese-De-SA - February 9, 2012
I would have said Golden
then he went and committed to the Ags and (apparently) shut down his recruitment.
With that said…
Golden
RedmondLonghorn - February 9, 2012
Perhaps Harris,
but I think the good news here is that recruiting has been so strong on both sides of the ball that I don’t think there are many, if any, must-get guys past Raulerson, who is so important both because of his versatility and because of his potential as the leader of the class.
I would add Justin Manning as another, but again, there’s a lot of quality defensive tackle depth right now, so even recruiting at that position won’t hinge entirely on him.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 9, 2012
Manning, Wade, and Miles...imo
We need at least one great DT in this years class, Dorsey, Moore and Whaley will be gone in 2014, the incoming 2013 DT can redshirt due to the depth and be ready to jump into the rotation for a full 4…
TowerPower - February 9, 2012
Great Point Tower
I was thinking 1 max due to depth but I like the idea of thinking of the DTs as from class of 2014. May be a tough sell, but I think that would really help establish some continuity. Maybe Coach Bo makes us DTU.
realmccoy - February 9, 2012
I like
but I don’t think he’s a no-brainer offer right now. I would actually be a bit surprised at this point if he gets an offer.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 9, 2012
I assume you're talking about Wade...
I get that he’s not highly thought of but I really like what I’ve seen of him, and he’s the top ranked ILB in the state and number 4 in the nation, so the longer we wait the harder it’ll be to rope him in, plus I’m not as high on Santos as everyone else seems to be…
TowerPower - February 9, 2012
Yeah, meant Wade.
Left that part out somehow.
Wescott Eberts (GoBR) - February 9, 2012
It is great to read of the staff's interest....
….. in slowing down the evaluation process to assure the proper selection. Having these 3 SEC coaches on staff is worth its weight in gold.
HornChamps - February 9, 2012
4, you forgot Applewhite was OC at Bama
TowerPower - February 9, 2012
No.......... I didn't.
Major has had his wings clipped & his evaluations stomped on since his return to the 40 Acres. He wasn’t able to implement the SEC way while operating under the thumb. Thankfully, he now has some staff members who affirm the better method.
HornChamps - February 16, 2012
Spot on
I like Warrick quite a bit as a corner. Long arms, good frame and 5’11.’’
I wouldn’t sleep on Mitchell as a TE. He’s 6’4’’ and has a 40" vert. Good Gawd. I think Texas should take Naashon Hughes, Mitchell and Hollins. A shallow position a few months ago is looking pretty deep right now.
Well done on Daeshon Hall. I see NFL with that frame and athleticism.
I predict Antwuan Davis will be a late flip after a healthy and productive senior season.
billfromlaketravis - February 9, 2012
Any insight into the Hollins issues Eric Nahalin has been tweeting about?
Horncasting - February 9, 2012
Hollins
Eric is tight with Hollins Sr. I’m sure he’ll pull back the curtain when the family gives the go ahead. I don’t think it’s anything sinister.
My gut feeling is that the staff wants to see where they are with DJ Ward before they make a move on Hollins. A lot of the JD2 player are recruits that Texas likes, but want another couple weeks to evaluate.
billfromlaketravis - February 9, 2012
Hollins looks a lot like Alonzo Williams
a Louisiana native who transferred to LB Poly. He was one of the LA kids A&M actually managed to keep; the fact he was residing in the other L.A. at the time probably helped.
Williams is, I think, a genuine steal for a 3-star guy.
